4 out of 5 stars Spiders and flies and bugs, oh my!.......2006-12-13

Because of their isolation, the Hawaiian islands are often called the greatest natural laboratory of evolution in the world. Several scientists have made reputations of the highest stature by studying plants and animals of Hawaii.
But the isolation that keeps most wild species away also keeps scientists away. For all Hawaii's fame and allure, there are still extensive biological niches that have never even been surveyed. F.G. Howarth, entomologist at the Bishop Museum, estimates that at least 80 unnoticed species of the native moth Hyposmocoma are waiting to be discovered in West Maui.
The rest of the state has been combed for Hyposmocoma, which allows researchers to estimate how many species are likely to inhabit a favorable area as large as West Maui.
Hyposmocoma is not especially interesting as insects go, being much like other moths; but in recent years scientists have been amazed by discoveries among Hawaii's 9,000 or so species of arthropods -- about 90% of all species native to the islands.
Many of us who live here are familiar with the more spectacular finds: the world's only predatory caterpillars, the wekiu bug that lives atop Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa subsisting on debris blown up the slopes. Somewhat less familiar are the spiders with odd behaviors in East Maui and the diverse communities living in lava tubes, which were thought until the last few years to be virtually sterile.
And not many residents seem to be aware that a long-term, still unfinished study of Hawaiian fruit flies, associated with the name of now-retired Hampton Carson but including numerous other scientists, is regarded by evolutionists as one of the most significant studies in that field ever.
Carson concentrated on the "picture-wing" flies, large, beautiful (and harmless to crops) native flies, using chromosome maps to elucidate how a (probably) single colonization led to more than 600 species (some say, 800) of native fruit flies. The work was not only significant in its finding by developed a powerful analytical tool that could be used in other studies. (Since this review was first published in 1993, fly reseachers on the Big Island have observed speciation occurring in under 20 years in kipukas, isolated bits of rain forest cut off from the main forest by lava flows. Antievolutionists often complain that no one has ever observed speciation in real time in the wild. Now we have.)
"Hawaiian Insects and Their Kin" sketches a lot of this work, but such a slender volume cannot go very deep. Imported arthropods -- more than 3,000 species -- are largely ignored in favor of natives; which also means passing over certain controversies, especially about biological control of alien, agriculturally harmful fruit flies (the oriental, melon, Mediterranean flies, primarily).
As usual in this uniform series from the University of Hawaii Press, which has other volumes on plant and reef life, the photographs are the best feature. The pictures are outstanding, and the reproduction is superb. Big Islander W.P. Mull has made an international reputation shooting Hawaii's creepy-crawlies.
After Massachusetts, Hawaii probably has more popular, introductory books about everything -- biology, history, culture -- than any other state. (Massachusetts is not inherently more interesting than Hawaii, but it has by far the highest per capita population of professors.) Howarth and Mull's book is an example of the better sort.

3 out of 5 stars needs updating.......2005-07-19

this book is more of a minaturized field guide,..in size (it's about 6" x 4" wide) and in regards to information. there is not that much information but the line drawings help with identifying spiders. i would have liked to see more writen information on the spiders as well as actual pictures. overall for the price it's a nice book to have. i've actually used it several times to identify spiders in my garden.

5 out of 5 stars What kind of spider is that?.......2004-07-28

This was one of the first books I bought with my own money when I was a kid. I have since bought an updated version since most of the pages have come unglued in the old one (from use, not poor quality). Typical golden book illustrations, not photographs. Easy enough for a kid to use but filled with enough spider species for any adult to use. I have only found one or two spiders in my life that were not in this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Beginner's Introduction to Non-Insect Arthropods.......2004-05-23

I was introduced to the early "Golden Guides" in the 1950s. My very first book on insects was in this series and I wore out numerous copies of the various titles. Of these I have always especially admired H. W. and Lorna Levi's "Spiders and Their Kin." This little guide had (and to a large degree still has) the most complete systematic treatment of any of the taxa covered in the "Golden Guide" series. Few books were available on these fascinating creatures when this work was originally published and "Spiders and Their Kin" was a considerable improvement. The drawings of spider eye arrangements were especially helpful for identification.

Unfortunately time does not stand still and the reprinted version of this book is somewhat behind in its treatment of spider families. There has been some attempt by St. Martin's Press to revise the classification (the sac spiders are shown to belong to several families), but some of the other families have also undergone major changes (e.g. "Ctenizidae" is now at least three families) and "brown spiders" (a name I really do not like- I prefer "violin spiders" as more descriptive) are now members of the Sicariidae. Neither of the last two changes made it into the revised book, either because they occurred after the corrected copy was submitted or because they were overlooked. The current revision does include the statement that urocteids and oecobiids have been united under the Oecobiidae - as it turns out, having a cribellum is a primitive trait and does not indicate relationships very well- but mistakenly indicates that the "oecobiids" are larger than "urocteids". It also still has the two "families" on different pages, so the revision did not include a rearrangement of the figures. In the scorpions there have been major taxonomic changes as well, but most of these were not noted (again several are probably just too recent to have been included). However, Hadrurus is correctly placed in the Iuridae, instead of the Vaejovidae.

Because of these major developments I cannot recommend this book as an up to date guide to currently recognized spider families, but it still is a good starting place for those (especially young people) who would like to know more about arachnids, millipedes, centipedes, and land crustaceans. Fortunately many, if not most, of the families (e. g. Theraphosidae, Oonopidae, Salticidae, Linyphiidae, Selenopidae, Theridiidae, Araneidae, Tetragnathidae, Lycosidae) are still valid as described in the original edition of the book.

4 out of 5 stars A good little field guide.......2004-02-26

Upon first reading, it is unfortunate that "Spiders and Their Kin" shows but a select few species from among the Arachnid pantheon, but it has been a great read and a great reference over the ten-plus years since I first purchased an earlier edition.

Used as a sole reference, the book is lacking in many crucial details, but there are more specialized books available to those who find that the information within these pages is less than desired.

True, it will not go in-depth with regard to each individual species, and may not show one in particular, but it's a handier starting point for arachnid identification than its larger brethren and, that, I think, is the purpose for which it is intended to be used.

The bottom line: if you know little to nothing about arachnids at this time, or you just need a field guide to get you started on making identifications, go ahead and buy Levi's little gem. If you feel like you need to learn all that can be learned about an individual species of spider or need more specialized/more advanced field guides, then this is probably not the book for you.

4 out of 5 stars Good Starter book.......2003-09-08

I think this is a good starter book for identfying spiders that are more common. There are a couple of pages on webs that I found interesting. In the front it gives a great visual on how the Arthropod group is broken out and how different spider types break out within that - all helps when trying to do the id. There are so many different amazing spiders - this can only scrath the surface but is a really good place to start. I just like taking pictures and having a general idea of what I'm looking at so for me it works...I will be checking out other books too though like "How to Know Spiders" if there is one in that "How to Know" series.

No athlete has changed his sport the way Tiger Woods has transformed the world of golf. The Tiger phenomenon has created a new legion of golfers, seduced by Woods's almost effortless mastery of this most difficult game. In How I Play Golf Woods reveals the many facets of his game and offers a plethora of tips and advice aimed at all levels of play. Unlike most golf guides, and perhaps somewhat surprising from a player best known for his long game, How I Play Golf begins with the short game--putting, chipping, and pitching--before moving onto swing mechanics and hitting off the tee. Produced in conjunction with the editors of Golf Digest, the book is lavishly photographed and illustrated and offers a gold mine of useful ideas and mental images Tiger has collected over the years. Throughout, Tiger recounts memorable shots from his relatively brief career; for example, his only "perfect" shot (a 3-wood on No. 14 at St. Andrews) and his first putt at the 1995 Masters (a 20-footer for birdie on No. 1 that missed and rolled off the green). How I Play Golf is not only a first-rate instructional guide, it also communicates a passion and respect for the game that beginners, hackers, and low handicappers should find inspiring. Highly recommended. --Harry C. Edwards

                  4 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-09-13

I liked this book because it was very easy to read. Many of the tips were useful for me. My only hesitation for a five star rating were the numerous stories about how amazing Tiger is. I know he is amazing I don't need him to tell me that throughout the book.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great book..........2007-08-16

If you are a fan of Tiger and serious about Golf you need to get this book...I definitely liked the quality of the illustrations... Quality pictures and explanations helped me improve my swing.

Thirteen major championships, 59 PGA Tour Wins, $73,536,709 in PGA Career earnings, those are just a few of the things Tiger Woods has accomplished during his career as a professional golfer. His success has been based on the way he plays the game with sound fundamentals and a calm mind set. In How I Play Golf Tiger explains in detail how to prepare your body and mind to play golf before you ever step on the course. He gives his insights and routines for putting, chipping, driving, and escaping from bunkers. This book starts with the green and ends back at the tee the way he learned to play one step at a time.

Not many players can say they have a 2 handicap, even less can say they have a scratch handicap, only obout the top percent can say that they acomplished these feats at age 13. Tiger Woods was that age when he had a scratch handicap. My point is that Tiger is one of the best and the way he playes is the best of our time. If you want to learn to play like the top one percent buy this book.

As a retired LPGA Teaching Pro, I find this book extremely helpful for my students. I have recently given this as a gift to my nephew who I am currently helping develop his golf swing. Because of Tiger's relentless search for perfection in swing techniques, the pictures are extremely valuable to my lessons. I highly recommend this book to all golf lovers.

I really enjoyed this book! It kept me wanting to read more and more, but also it did not give away the final details until the very last page. When I saw that this author was one of the choices, I imediately went for one of her books. All of my friends that have read books from Joan Lowery Nixon are always saying that she is amazing and I needed to read one of her selections.I never really trusted them though, because mystery's just weren't my thing. Reading this book has changed my mind about that!I love this book, and hopefully I read more of them from this author. Reading this book has opened me up to other types of books that I never thought I would like.

                                        5 out of 5 stars Bonnie's book review.......2006-02-11

This is a really good book for people that love murder mysteries. Its about a girl, Jenny Jakes, who's mom, Madeline Jakes, is a famous murder mystery writer. Then one day her and her mom had to go to a reading of there Uncle Aronld Haromy's will. He owns Harmony Choclates, which is a major chocolate company. Then when they got to the reading of the will everything went wrong and some one ended up killed. But it was a really good book that kept you wanting to read more and more of it. But it also kept you guessing and wondering whodunit. So I highly reccomend reading this book.

Murdered, My Sweet is a fiction book by Joan Lowery Nixon. It is about a girl named Jenny and her mom Madeline Jakes. She is a famous author of mystery novels. They went to San Antonio for their millionare cousin, Arnold Harmonys reading the new and changed will party. But later that night, he gets killed and the wills get stolen before he reads it to everyone. Now Detective Donovan, Madeline Jakes, Jenny and her friend Carlos tries to find out who killed him.
I didn't like this book because there were too many people you have to remember thier names and how they are related to each other. I wouldn't recommend this book because I didn't like it too much myself.

Murdered, My Sweet is a very good mystery book, especially for a child like me. The book a based on a mother and a daughter going to a reunion like for her grandfather and he is rereading his will. Then his son gets murdered before the grandfather reads his will. Then the mother which is an author for writing mystery books is trying to solve the crime mystery on why and who killed the son of the grandfather.
Well there is an investigator and he is like askin everybody that was in this room what happened and then the mom was trying to help him out and there was people that was saying she was the best mystery solver. Then there is this secret code name "Tea Pot" and it had to do with the grandfather when he would die that they would like take over the company, see the grandfather is the owner for this chocolate factory and he is very wealthy. The daughter found out about it and the two people that were involved they were saying that they weren't going to do it anymore. They had to tell the investigator that and so they would see if they had killed the son.
The most of the book at the end is basically saying what happened about the murder and what happened about the will. That is why I like this book because I really like mystery books.
