This is a great board-book for kids between 1 and 5. The illustrations are beautiful, and get my kids to "think" about all that they can see. This book is one of my daughter's favorites - she'd crack up with laughter when the lights went out and the animals said goodnight. A thoroughly enjoyable read.

Don't get the Picture Puffin Books (Sagebrush) edition.......2007-09-29

This is a great story book. The 5 stars is for that.

I bought three editions for different kids: Good Night, Gorilla (Picture Puffin Books (Sagebrush)), Good Night, Gorilla, and Good Night, Gorilla (oversized board book). The Puffin edition is bound in a way that makes it difficult to open flat. The paper is thinner than most good hardcover children's books. The two board book editions are very nice. You also might want to try the regular hardcover edition.

A Must For Your Child's Library.......2007-09-17

Goodnight, Gorilla is a delightful book, filled with fun, secrets and anticipation. We started reading it at age 2 and my now 6 year old son still enjoys it! We especially love the dark page with eyes....you will too! It is the perfect companion to '10 Minutes Till Bedtime', also by Peggy Rathmann, because this cast of characters appear in that book as next door neighbors! Together they make a perfect child/baby gift. Thanks Peggy Rathmann!

My Daughter's (and Our) Favorite.......2007-07-23

We received this book as a gift after our daughter's birth, and now that she's ten months old, it's her absolute favorite. She actually goes to her book basket, digs through the all of the books to find this one, and then brings it to us to read to her. The best part is that because the narrative is told through the pictures instead of through words, it's a different book when I read it to her than when her father, grandmother, etc. does. I'm sure that as she gets older, we'll be able to modify our reading of Good Night, Gorilla to suit her age, pointing out different things about the story than interest her now. This book is destined to be a classic!

My 1st grader hates to put it down, he would rather read Magic Tree House books, than play video games. He even reads them to his class and explains the story for show and tell. In his kindergarten class the teacher would also let him read the Magic Tree House books out loud, not to give her a break, but to promote reading out loud. Great books!

Good Morning Gorillas is by Mary Pope Osborne. In this magic tree house book, the main Characters are Jack and Annie is in the rain forest. This book is about jack and Annie meeting a little gorilla who leads them to his family and becoming close friends. What I think the author is saying is you can become friends with animals. I can't tell my favorite part because it's the end and I don't want to give away the ending. But even though it was sad I loved it. I think it would be a good book for people who love animals.

I am not sure what else my 6 yrs old son has stayed with for so long! We read a chapter every night at bedtime. He looks forward to it every night. He has enjoyed very book and he gets excited for the next one. We are up to #26 now and he shows no sign of losing interest!

He has learned about earthquakes, Roman empire, Shakespeare, Indians, American Revolutionary war, etc.

Gorillas in the Mountains of Africa!

Good Morning Gorillas by Mary Pope Osborne is an adventurous animal fiction story. The two main characters are Jack who takes notes wherever he goes and Annie who is very adventurous in finding new friends and clues. Jack and Annie travel in the magic tree house to go to the jungle in the mountains of Africa. They are going to Africa to save gorillas from extinction. I liked this book because it is an exciting story about Jack and Annie's encounter with huge gorillas. It is a very brave and nice thing to save the gorillas because they are an endangered species. I recommend this book for all children ages nine and up. You can learn about gorillas and their suprising gentle nature. I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5.

Love these stories.......2007-08-25

My son loves these stories and he learns a little about each destination. The only problem I have with the books is that proper sentence structure is not always used. Did the editors not notice? These books are for beginner readers, so it is confusing to them not to have proper "subject/verb" sentence structure.

Higher numbered books are longer.......2007-07-17

I have the audio CD versions of every story 1-24 and 29-32. I can tell you that the stories 29-32 are much longer than any of the books in the first few sets.

For example, books 17-24 have a total play time of almost exactly 5 hours compared with books 29-32 with a total story time just over 5 hours. So, you get 50% less "books", but the same story reading time.

I am just purchasing this set 25-28 now, and I do not yet know the running time of these stories. But.. you should evaluate the hours of audio enjoyment, not just the number of books when making your comparisons. Perhaps Amazon will add this information to the details, or perhaps I just missed it.

I agree with the other comment 100%. I am dissapointed at such a blatent marketing ploy to charge more money for less content. Done in the best "bait and switch", new and (not) improved tradition. I'll buy it for the same reason, but it is frustrating.

Why are there only 4 stories on this set for nearly the same price as 8 on the previous three audio CD releases? I'll buy it because my daughter loves them, but I can't say I'm thrilled with paying only $2 less for half the content.

I have at least a dozen books on writing for children and I especially like this one. Not only does it focus exclusively on picture books, which few others do, it provides solid, concrete information that you can apply directly to your own writing. Too many other books offer vague tips that may be helpful in polishing an existing manuscript, but don't help with building your story from the ground up. I've been trying (sporadically) to sell picture book manuscripts for several years now, and I believe that what I've learned from this book will help get me closer to my goal of being a published author. Volumes II and III are on their way to me now and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!

although quinn once again is tackling ideas that are taken for granted in society, in My Ishmael he shows what we can actually do to help save the world(from oursleves that is). The new tribal revolution is simply a paradigm shift about how the benefits of a business are to flow throughout its members-equally instead of unequally.

Overall, the book made you think about the individual stories that were explained throught the book. Each story builds on the previous one, which helps make the stories easier to understand. The facts that Quinn put in the book made the theories seem like they could work. Once getting past that their is a talking gorilla, the book is good. I enjoyed reading it. My Ishmael is the sequel to Ishmael.

"VOICE" Lesson for 6 Traits.......2007-06-28

This is the PERFECT book to use for teaching VOICE in a 6 Traits writing classroom or in a Writer's Workshop classroom. The students could follow up after hearing the book with a lesson about each voice and how it was unique. Fold a sheet into fourths and have them write each voice in a square. Then, have them write their own story using at least 2 different voices. I love this book and my daughter was very interested in it.

My 8 year old daughter introduced me to Anthony Browne. We have now collected many of his books, which are beautifully drawn and always carry a message. I love the fact that this book introduces the concept of point of view which I consider to be a rich literary tool, and introduces it in a way that my 8 year old grasps and is intrigued by. We will look for more Anthony Browne!

Unique story that will make you think........2007-03-29

Voices in the Park is not your typical book. There is no plot, as such. The afternoon's events are told by 4 different characters and clearly you will see that each one has a very different outlook. This is a good book to open to discussion with children that things are not always as they seem, that one person's fun is another person's bother, and to be mindful of our differences is what can hopefully connect us.

Not what i call a 'feel-good' book. Its not fluffy. This is a story that will bring about thought and discussion.

Think outside the box.......2007-10-14

The arguments presented in "Ishmael" are not the best presented or the most overly convincing - other than "our way of life is wrong" I quite honestly am not quite sure what Ishmael is suggesting we do as a society. However, what makes me love this book is the fact that its ways of looking at the world are entirely unusual - truly thinking "outside the box". It presents so many alternative ways of looking at the world, the ways of which we take for granted as being set, that it always makes me wonder what else I might have missed in life.

Anti-Christian, politically-correct, tree-hugging .......2007-10-11

A gorilla named Ishmael becomes the teacher for a naive, non-Christian man who is gullible enough to believe anything but unable to see through politically-correct, tree-hugging, anti-Christian lines. The story of Creation is called "mythology" by the characters in the book. Instead of discussing God, both characters refer to "the gods" even stating that they had to "eat of the tree of knowledge of good and evil" so they would learn"the truth", which is really falsehoods. Jesus is listed as a prophet like Moses and even put on the same level as Confusious and Mohammed. The gorilla claims that the caucasians were the ones who fell in the Garden and that the "mythical" story of Cain and Abel was referring to the Semites' difficulties in becoming the survivors of conflict in the area. He even calls the Bible "Semite war propaganda." The entire lesson the gorilla teaches is whether or not we should be "at the mercy of the gods" instead of "trying to decide who lives and dies" through raising cattle etc. and storing up more food than we need or being agriculturalists. The lesson that Ishmael is trying to teach is that our truths are falsehoods, and if we do not revert to hunters and gatherers, then the evolution process will stop and everyone will die. He claims that human beings are not the highest creatures and more creatures are yet to come into existence from us. This is certainly not a book for Christians or those who may waffle and fall prey to these unChristian and illogical falsehoods.

As a 1st grade teacher this series took my children outside of the room to look at the world making a connection through pieces of literature.

I own enough Reading Rainbows that every theme, unit of study, is supported by the series in some way.It's a part of our routines. I personally think LeVar Burton did more for children with this series than can ever be written in my volumes on the net. He's the "real thing."

Anyway on a tape I labeled friendship/feelings at some point...is Koko's Kitten. The book from which this is pulled in my book boxes.I recommend them both. We are taken, in both, to meet this creature, gorilla, involved in this study of language, American sign, communication.I want to say...something other than animal or gorilla but I can't figure out a structure. This...being. The book is the story of Koko, who is given a pet kitten named AllBall. She asks for her. In sign it's a very fitting name, her name putting together the words she knows and uses to express meaning. I have the book too, many years of wear on her now from children reading over a decade. As you learn of the signing I'm also in 1st concurrently teaching simple signs, first for alphabet letters(while singing songs like A You're Adorable or Taj Mahal's incredible Alphabet Blues, Funky, Funky ABC. ) then sight words, then colors, numbers, days of month, week...the banks of words we hit with kids categorized to teach.... it actually works in developing literacy.Sign it, read it, practice on many levels, sign all your songs, perfect. ( It's not in the mandated scripts NOW REQUIRED as the writers weren't as good in Underperforming schools...)Anyway I show this particular Reading Rainbow and read this book every year when we turn to mammals and animal classification. It expands our understanding of how classification works. Evolving abilities. So to speak. Or sometimes to talk about care and love. Because on the video the story is embedded in talk about our feelings. And how emotion functions.

Koko is the most tender story. Just watching her life is fascinating, but to see it through the story of her two kittens, here in spring when children are having pet babies...it is so interesting. She loses her kitten to a terrible tragedy, how her grief is expressed has always spoken to me. I read quite eclectically but watching her sign, and grieve this kitten somehow elevated my relationship to living things, life. It really did. And it taught me something about the function of loving, and need for caring. I believe Koko has elemental truth. So of course I practically have to threaten my kids to share the book. Nothing like dichotomies.
Koko gets a second pet, lipstick so the story does not leave you lost in her grief. Having lost kittens and cats I connected on many levels to this story as I'm sure children did too. At some point it's not a story about "animals'. It's a story about life.

At one time you could not get the book, here re-issued, so I need to order because quite honestly the lessons here are timeless and important for use with 1st graders. For anyone. There are other movies and material about this too if working with older students. Koko has captivated many of us.

Thanks for a book that changed a teacher's work. Thanks for presenting to children something of your research and revealing just how fascinating it can be to try to understand our cousins and thus understand ourselves.
I'm ordering for my nephew who loves nature and learning from "real" things more than anything.

The photos make the book valuable for adults as well. Koko is amazing, her story very touching. I urge all Koko admirers to support her move to Hawaii. Koko rocks!!

Best Book Ever........2007-03-02

This book I read as a kid, and I have to say it changed my life. Sounds dumb, but it did. I love this book I really do, and I think if you don't buy it or at least find a copy somewhere and read it you are doing yourself a disservice. I remember going to the library at my elementary school and they had this book and I would always go in pick it up read it and check it out then return it and do it all over again the next week.... get this book. I hope you enjoy it!

I had to have this book again.......2005-12-01

I had this book years ago as a teen, when I saw it here I had to get it. My old copy is missing. I love this story, who would believe that a gorilla could learn sign launguage and love a tiny kitten. It is a sweet story that I want my kids to hear of compassion and love.

In 1963, an occupational therapist from Kentucky, in uncertain health and spirits, traveled to central Africa in the quixotic hope of seeing a mountain gorilla in its natural habitat. This book details the everyday lives of the a few mountain gorilla families as observed by Dian Fossey. She lived in the forest of Rwanda and Congo for more than a decade to study the gorillas.

Gorillas, one of humankind's closest relatives, are highly socialized animals. They live in groups that are formed and strengthened by kinship ties. Each individual has a role in the group and needs to constantly resolve conflicts within the group. Since each animal was given a name, the gorilla observations are like their stories. And indeed, their mating behavior, ways to enhance and defend their social status, and their heroism when defending the group against aggression, are much like that of a human society.

Dian Fossey pointed out the injustice done to the gorillas when their young were captured for display in a zoo. The capture of one baby gorilla often results in the death of several other gorillas (in many cases the whole family) as gorillas will fight to death to defend their young.

The book is technical with numerous references. It also entertaining and thought provoking.

Fascinating and Wonderful.......2006-12-27

Gorillas in the Mist is a fascinating and wonderful book about Dian Fossey and her studies of the mountain gorillas. Dian went to Africa in the 60's and set up camp there to study and trail the gorillas. In this book she recounts how she decided to study gorillas and how she got to follow her dream. The book follows the various gorilla groups she follows and the behaviors that she was able to observe.

B/c Dian was not a classically trained anthropologist a lot of her observations of the gorillas are compared to what human actions or feelings these may mirror. The book also is a highlights sort of book that summarizes her almost 2 decades studying these amazing animals. Although I found the book highly enjoyable and interesting I did get tried of it in the end, b/c the stories about the gorillas seemed repetitious.

Dian does touch up on the poaching and problems she had but I don't think in her novel she emphasized how dangerous the poachers were and how dangerous her actions to thwart them were. She was murdered and probably by these poachers.

I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in Dian Fossey and gorillas. It is a fascinating look at gorillas in their natural environment and a woman whose quest it was to save them.

After more than 15 years, the mastermind behind the gruesome and infamous murder of renowned gorilla researcher and protector, Dr. Dian Fossey whose life was portrayed in the 1988 movie "Gorillas in the Mist," may finally be in custody in Belgium. Protais Zigiranyirazo, the former Governor of the Ruhengeri province in Rwanda, brother-in-law of the assassinated Rwandan president, and one of the country's most wanted criminals for his creation of "death squads," which killed 800,000 in 1994, was captured by Belgian police while trying to flee Kenya on June 9, 2001.

Dr. Fossey observed the gorillas for 18 years in the Ruhengeri province when she was brutally murdered in her hut on December 27, 1985. Known for her vigilant pursuit of poachers, Dr. Fossey had made many enemies including Zigiranyirazo, who, it was reported, she was about to announce publicly as being behind poaching and smuggling rings of endangered species and gold in and out of Rwanda. Soon after her murder, Rwandan officials arrested one of her trackers for the murder. He then "apparently" committed suicide while in prison, but diplomats in Kigali believe he was secretly hanged before he could talk. Several months later, Wayne McGuire, her American research assistant, was accused by the Government of her murder but escaped capture when the US embassy warned him, enabling him to leave the country.

For years the FBI was unable to approach its prime suspect, Zigiranyirazo, because of his political connections, but that all changed when he was arrested in Belgium for war crimes.

The saga of Dian Fossey's murder may soon be resolved, but her work for the gorillas she fought so hard to preserve still goes on. The following story, reprinted from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund International, is of Beetsme, one of the original gorillas observed by Dr. Fossey over 25 years ago.

"Gorillas In The Mist" is more than just a scientific journal, it is a window into the world of nature itself. Dian Fossey paints a clear picture of her beloved mountain gorillas and brings forth her passion, through words, to save them from extinction. She went against the odds and changed the way we think about gorillas. She is a heroine in my eyes.
And to the reviewer who stated that Dian Fossey went against the laws of science by touching and becoming emotionally invovled with the gorillas, the only way that you're ever going to actually be able to really get to know something or someone is to become emotionally invovled. That's just common sense to figure that out. With that said, Gorillas In the Mist is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it to everyone.

Utterly Fascinating.......2004-11-01

I picked this up on a whim. I had a gift card to a local book store and remembered finding the movie adaptation quite entertaining.

The result was a character study that blew me away. The subject matter of the mountain gorillas Fossey studied was only part of it. The person that came out in book was the true catch for me. Dian Fossey was as human as anyone else. A truly driven and flawed person who impacted science across the world.

what is there to not love about this book? there aren't too many words & the pictures are so cute that there are plenty of things to have a conversation with my baby about. (You know, like, "Look at that butterfly! Is it pretty?" or "Do you see how much hippo loves gorila? She's taking him to the bananas. Do you see the bananas?") The story is warm & cute & it's a great birthday gift! Thanks to the person who gave it to us!

Wonderful Book.......2007-07-09

This was one our favorite childhood books. When I saw it on Amazon it brought back so many wonderful memories. My brother especially liked this book. My sister is having a baby and would really appreciate this book from our childhood. We're all in our thirties too!

I love giving this book. The illustrations are wonderful -- soft and colorful -- and the message is reassuring. Everyone in the jungle loves baby gorilla when he's a baby, but when he grows to be big, will that change? It doesn't, of course; he is just as well-loved. For growing children, leaving the adored days of babyhood -- indulged, no responsibilities -- can be hard. This little book assures that the same love and support will be there as he grows up.

This book is great to read to a baby or toddler. It's one of my favorites, I think it has become one of my daughter's favorites also.
