Book Description
Authored by a very eminent geneticist, this text gives students a thorough appreciation of the development and potential of analytical genetic techniques. Beginning with a consideration of both the classical mendelian and the molecular biological aspects of genetic analysis, the book goes on to discuss progress in three key areas of genetics. Firstly the elucidation of the detailed structure and overall organization of the genome; secondly the way in which genetic differences at the molecular level account for heritable variation in populations; and finally an explanation of how the genes control the metabolism and development of the whole organism. Professor Fincham takes as his theme the links between classical and molecular genetics, and throughout the book shows how the combination of these two approaches can be a powerful tool for the advancement of genetic research.

Book Description
With the first draft of the human genome project in the public domain and full analyses of model genomes now available, the subject matter of 'Principles of Genome Analysis and Genomics' is even 'hotter' now than when the first two editions were published in 1995 and 1998. In the new edition of this very practical guide to the different techniques and theory behind genomes and genome analysis, Sandy Primrose and new author Richard Twyman provide a fresh look at this topic. In the light of recent exciting advancements in the field, the authors have completely revised and rewritten many parts of the new edition with the addition of five new chapters. Aimed at upper level students, it is essential that in this extremely fast moving topic area the text is up to date and relevant.

Customer Reviews:
Ron Shandler Is the Man!.......2006-03-30
I buy a copy of this book every year, and consider it indispensible to my pre-draft analysis. If you have ever worshipped at the altar of Bill James and also play fantasy baseball, this is the book for you. If you don't know who Bill James is, it's probably not.
Disappointing .......2006-03-16
Too many numbers without enough explanation. Shandler seems to assume that you have been reading his books for years and have a thorough understanding of all of his metrics.
However, I do believe that the approach is sound. Including more commentary on players would be useful.
The primary advantage to this book is that it has one of the earliest release dates for books that discusses the coming season. Without much competition, what else are you going to read in the cold of winter?
I doubt if I will buy it again next year.
Ron Shandler's baseball masterpiece!.......2006-03-13
This book is a must have for any fantasy bsaeball fan.If you fancy yourself to be an above-average fantasy player and you don't have this book you are just kidding yourself. The detailed metrics used in the book are thoroughly and easily translated so that even the most casual fan can make use of the information.Frankly,I don't know how you can expect to win your league without the extensive knowledge of player's skills that Ron Shandler provides.Whether you play in a league just for fun or play in a league that requires an entry fee with prizes paid to the winners,Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster is required reading!I won't enter my next draft room without it!!
Nothing better.......2006-02-25
Ron Shandler's Baseball Forecaster is simply the best book to have as you prepare for fantasy or sim games. His analysis is unmatched. I have been buying this book for 6 years now and can't imagine not getting it. Must have!
Great Book.......2006-02-25
Having read pretty much all of the fantasy books out there, I find this book the best if you are in a rotisserie, 5X5 league. It was wrote expecting that you are in a NL or AL only, $260 budget, 23 man rosters, and 12 teams. If your league is a little different than this such as a mixed league, different budgets, or different roster size this is still the book for you. The values will be a little off, but you will still know what to expect from a player and how he compares to others at his position. It gives projections that while not always right, I find more reasoned and likely to happen than many other similar books. Not only does it give you these projections, it gives you reasons why the player is over or underperforming. The Baseball Forcaster, Minor League Baseball Analyst, and the Baseball America Prospect Handbook are all that anyone should need to run a successful fantasy baseball team.

Book Description
Looking for a travel guide that goes where other guides fear to tread? One that rides roughshod over ad-copy puffery to smartly deliver the real scoop on a destination's sites and attractions? One that dares to be honest, hip, and fun? Look no more. Frommer's Irreverent Travel Guides are wickedly irreverent, unabashedly honest, and downright hilarious, and provide an insider's perspective on which attractions are overrated tourist traps and which are the secret gems that locals love. You'll get the lowdown on restaurants, lodging, and shopping, and even find out what the locals think of you. "Like being taken around by a savvy local," said the New York Times. "Hipper and savvier than other guides," concurred Diversion magazine. Never shy about confronting the issues, the Irreverents are guides to real travel in the real world.
Frommer's Irreverent Guide to Manhattan is as brash and ballsy as the Big Apple itself. You'll get the straight scoop on old chestnuts like the Empire State Building, as well as the skinny on new hotspots such as the sleek "neo-lounges" on the Lower East Side. With the Irreverent Guide, you'll become as mobile as the locals: a dim sum brunch in a bustling Chinatown banquet hall is just a subway ride away from a soul-food dinner in Harlem. Discover one of the city's secret bargains: the free ride on the Staten Island Ferry past the Statue of Liberty. In the Irreverent Guide to Manhattan, the gloriously decadent City that Never Sleeps is made both manageable and deliciously fun—whether you choose to pursue the high life at the model hangouts and caviar bars or get down with the low life at Punjabi tandoor delis and cheesy karaoke bars.

Irreverent? No Way.......2006-06-02
Listed amongst hotels to stay at Four Seasons or Waldorf Astoria. Then of course, there is the NY YMCA - hardly irreverent. Well they do list the Chelsea Hotel - but how 60s is that! Restaurants, well there's Nobu and Next Door Nobu, The Pink Teacup, a group of Italian Restaurants all owned by Mario Batali - Po, Babbo and Lupa and I quote from the book "the only thing more remarkable than the cuisine and impeccable service is how hard it is to get a reservation"!
I then wanted to take a trip around Harlem. If you research on the internet there are a couple of very cool and different tours, but in this book - Harlem Spirituals or Harlem Your Way...are the suggestions - what could be more reverent!
Take shopping.... well Macy,s, Tiffany's, H and M, Bloomingdales and Saks get good reviews and of course there is the 'Low Down for Style wise guys' - sheesh! and for kids (To Buy your Kids Love...)FAO schwarz, Toys R Us, the Disney Store and the Scholastic Store are the only ones mentioned. I know a store were you can buid a doll from scratch, or a bear, and take your home made baby home for a few dollars!
Now, I can tell you some great hotels to stay in in town at a reasonable price and just brimming with help and comfort. I can suggest some great clubs for nightlife, fabulous restaurants at out of city prices and tours to blow your mind and I found them all on the internet. This book is a complete and utter waste of money, not to mention a great big phoney!
Irreverent Advice.......2006-03-24
I thought this would be an insiders guide;things not covered by usual guide books, undiscovered gems, restaurants etc.It wasn't.This is just a poorly laid out, same old same old, guide book, don't waste your money.
Extremely useful.......2004-08-16
Head and shoulders above your average guide book. I used it in my last visit to nyc and found it to have a lot of information that no other guidebooks have. It was hip, up-to-date and easy to read. It's also really funny.

Known for its energy, its edge, and its in-your-face attitude, New York emanates, and demands, savvy and style. To feel a part of the New York scene--rather than merely looking in through the window at someone else's party--you'll need a guide with New York attitude, an insider's panache, and a local's tongue-in-cheek spirit. Ian McMahan and Jordan Simon provide just that, with knowledge, sophistication, and fun in their Manhattan Irreverent Guide.
New York teems with opportunities, overwhelms with variety. You can put the blinders on and follow the beaten path, or you can bone up on your options, make your choices, and hang with the natives. The Irreverent Guide is up to date with 137 restaurant options, divvied up into 26 categories that help you narrow the field and make informed decisions. One category delves into old New York eateries, another points you toward vegetarian fare. There's a page devoted to sushi, a page for coffeehouses, a category for budget dining, and another for over-the-top extravagance. Listing cuisines from Asian to Italian to Soul, and sorting restaurants by atmosphere (rudest waitstaff, most attentive service, classic New York, homey, trendy, preppy, and bistro chic), the categories enable you to do more than quell your hunger; they allow you to opt for the New York dining experience of your choice.
Similar attention is given to hotels (with 30 categories that range from luscious love nest to endearingly eccentric, park views to budget deals), diversions, entertainment, nightlife, shopping, and out-of-town excursions, while including the basics of how to get around the city, where to find a doctor, limousine, childcare, or gay resource. Slim enough to carry in a purse or pocket, the Irreverent Guide helps you get what you want from New York, and have fun while you're at it. --Stephanie Gold

Not all it's cracked up to be.......2004-11-13
We knew we were doomed with this book when, on the very first day of our trip to Manhattan, we walked into a recommended "authentic NY" pizza joint, took one look around and realized everyone in the place was a tourist. The pizza was gross, overpriced and left us feeling like huge suckers.
This book bills itself as the "insider's" guide to Manhattan, but it consistently let us down with restaurants and attractions. It also didn't give us a great idea which neighborhoods or areas are dangerous, or best avoided at night, etc. The maps are minimal enough to be almost worthless, and we could have used a lot more information on how to use the subway system. This book is definitely not worth the money.
Fabulous guide to help plan a fabulous trip!.......2001-07-08
I bought this book because of the title and I was not disappointed. The information is organized into sections like where to eat, where to sleep, where to shop, etc. and each section has an introduction and run-down of what to expect. Each section is broken down further, like where to eat if you want to spot celebrities and which hotels charge for the toiletries in the rooms. There is a section about the neighborhoods of NYC that is very honest and tells the first time traveler to NY the difference between the Upper East Side and the Upper West Side and Chelsea and SoHo (also how SoHo got its name). Very helpful and honest guide that also includes maps of the hotels, clubs, restaurants, and attractions that it highlights.

Book Description
Fourteen-year-old Vicki Harris's dream has come true. She has been accepted into the summer program at New York City's prestigious School of American Ballet. It will be hard work and highly competitive, but Vicki feels ready. She is totally committed to dancing.
Vicki isn't prepared to be one of only two African-American students in the program. Nor is she expecting the racism she finds within the school. And Michael, from Harlem, takes Vicki completely by surprise. He shakes up her dream world--where Baryshnikov is her idol, her parents never really got divorced, and every pirouette is perfect--and shows her that the real world is bigger than a stage.
From the Paperback edition.
Customer Reviews:
A point of view.......2006-05-25
First look in a dance room and all you see is thin white girls. If you look more closely, you might see a speck of black. That's how ballet is and that's what Another Way to Dance is about. Vicki Harris loves ballet and had just been accepted to a top dance school and ends up feeling like a "chip in the cookie". Her parents are divorced but that is not the focus of the book. Vicki has a lot of expectations and this book shows whether she gets them of not. My dislikes about this book were the explaining of the divorce; it could have been better, the dialogue a little more real and a little less stereotyping. But you don't notice the impact of those things. This book is a good read.
Another Way to Dance.......2006-02-28
Another Way to Dance is about a fourteen-year-old African American girl, Vicki. She's been dancing for years and is one of the best in the studio where she dances. After applying and getting into an elite dance program, though, she goes to New York City for a few months to participate. Vicki stays with her mother's best friend, Hannah, with whom she develops a loving bond. Everything's great about the program, except that she's the only black dancer there, other than another girl called Debbie. Together, they deal with the racism and prejudice that gets thrown their way and deal with making it in a place where everyone else is white. With adventures to Wendy, meeting boys, and taking a look at what it's really like in the city for blacks, Vicki learns to have pride in herself and hold her head up high.
I'd recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in dance or who'd like to learn a bit about dance. More importantly, though, I'd recommend it to teens who are looking for a story of inspiration, accepting who you are, and having pride.
racism and dance.......2005-06-15
Another Way to Dance by Martha Southgate is an intriguing story about a 14-year-old ballerina named Vicki. Vicki is one of the best dancers at her school back home in New Jersey, and to her surprise, she gets accepted in to the School of American Ballet in NYC. There, she lives with her aunt and takes classes everyday during the summer. The only aspect of Vicki's appearance that makes her different from everyone in the school is that she is African-American, except for Debbie, a girl in all of her classes that is also African-American. Vicki befriends Debbie and they both go through the troubles of being a different race in an environment they chose to join.
I recommend this book to anyone who is a dancer or can relate to the situations that Vicki deals with because it may give you another look on how it feels to be a black teenager trying to fit in with people who are like you, but are still so much different than you.
Dancing Around Racism .......2005-03-02
Vicki is a great dancing girl that goes to School of American Ballet. Her classmates in that school do no accept her because of her color. She becomes friends with a white boy and her mother does not accept white people being her friends. She wishes that people would not judge her by that. Vickie wants to be friends with different "colors." I like this book because it puts you in somebody else's shoes for a chance. You figure out how bad it feels to be treated like that. Just because you're black, white, of whatever other color you it puts you in groups. A separate group with you and the people that act or look just like you. You cannot communicate with other people not in the same group you are because other people will make fun of you. This book changes your thinking of people and I give this book 4/5 stars.
There's a First Time for Everthing.......2004-03-11
In the beginning of the story this girl named Vicki gets accepted to this school for young kids who love to dance, it is something like a Julliard for young kids. It was called School of American Ballet. Vicki has never really experienced racism before in her life. When she goes to SAB (School of American Ballet) she starts to experience it. She is one of only two African Americans at this school. She then meets this boy named Michel. HE shows her all of New York. The only thing is that he is white and Vicki is Black. His mother doesn't approve of there friendship. Towards the end Vicki really starts to learn that she has to live with the fact that she is black, and that she will have racism the rest of her life! She then feels happier then she did because she knows that no matter what she does she can't change who she is inside.
I really did like this book because it really showed me how much racism hurts African Americans. I knew that it hurt them really bad, but the way it affects them is how it helped me. I'm not racist but some people are; I think if they read this book then they would see how much there words have an affect on some people's lives! I loved this book so much that I would recommend it to anybody who wanted to see things through someone else's eyes.

Another Way To Dance.......2002-02-21
Another Way To Dance
By: Martha Southgate
For someone that has ever had the dream to do something great with her talents, the story of Vicki Harris and her struggle to become the best dancer in the summerprogram at New York City's School of American Ballet is a great resource for inspiration. Another Way To Dance by Martha Southgate shows the struggles and ambition of a fourteen year old girl trying to discover herself and her goals in a Manhattan dance school. As Vicki battles to get through all her classes, classes in which she is one of two African Americans, she is also faced with trying to discover her true self. Also , what she thought first took precedent, she must decide in her life what takes priority.
While things may seem great for Vicki, she is also struggling inside with many
things. She must deal with anything from divorce to celebrity crushes on top of her ten dance classes a week. Ever since she was little, Vicki has been taught to respect people's differences. When she starts at her new dance school, she realizes that not all people are taught the same way. She is one of two black people at the school, and looks to her are everything. For years Vicki has tried to fit into the typical "ballerina" stereotype, she has watched her weight, straightened her hair ,and tried to stay looking like a ideal ballerina. Vicki describes her needs to be the same as every ballerina to her mother one day as they discuss her hair,
" Ma, I know, I know. You've been talking about this stuff ever since I was little. But I don't see why what I do with my hair makes a difference. I have to straighten it, Ma. If I'm ever gonna make it, I've gotta look like everyone else."
(Pg. 15)
She wants to look exactly like everyone there, so as not to get any unwanted publicity. She also has to try and deal with her parents' divorce while keeping a certain level of composure. She doesn't like her parents for getting divorced, yet never tells them. She often gets angry, but turns to no one for help with her frustration.
As Vicki tries to deal with the changes being thrown at her, she is starting to grow in ways she had never thought before her classes in Manhattan started. Back in New Jersey where she comes from, she was always the best at ballet. She was the best in her class, and looked up to. When she gets to Manhattan, she finds that she must struggle to keep any position at all in the classes. She went from the top dancer in her class to one of the lowest. She finds herself having to try harder and harder to keep her life like it was, though inside, she is struggling to find if the old ways of life are the best for her anymore. She knows that she has changed since she came to stay with her aunt. She is just not sure if she really wants these changes. A few things happen while Vicki is trying to figure out what person she wants to become, some good, some bad. She makes new friends who teach her that most of all, you shouldn't change because you're afraid to stand out. This helps Vicki see that it might not be a bad thing to change who you are a bit.
This book is a great resource for people that have a dream, but just aren't sure how they can go about accomplishing that dream while taking on the rest of life's challenges. Vicki thought of dance as her life. She worked so hard at it, and sacrificed so much just so she could dance. But when she finally got one step closer to her goal of becoming a ballerina, she realized that dancing cannot simply be her life. She had to work on other aspects of her life in order to get focused and see what was really important.
For anyone that has always wanted something and worked really hard to get far in that area, but never really worked hard at the other aspects of their life because of that goal, this is an excellent book to read to clear in their mind what their goals are. If one focuses too much time and attention on one part of their life, neglecting the other parts, their mind can become bogged down and they end up worse off than expected . I feel that for people like this, this book shows that to really excel in an area, one can't forget other areas of their life, because they all work together to make up what it is they're great at.
Throughout the book, Vicki is fighting change. She struggles to get better at ballet, though she on all other levels tries to keep things in her comfort zone. At first, she fights these changes, seeing as they won't work into the plan she has built in her head. But what Vicki comes to realize is that if she would just let some things happen as they may, life wouldn't seem so stressful and complicated. She goes on to see that things may not always work out the way you had once planned, and most of the time, that's okay. It's not really that you don't accomplish what you set out for anymore. It's that you have truly done something worth all the trouble along the way.
