Book Description
When you think of Arizona, you think desert. But Arizona is also home to mountains that top 12 ,000 feet and broad plateaus that are shaded by ponderosa pines, spruce, and fir. Sheer cliff faces soar skyward, mesas abound, and, yes, Arizona is dissected by gulches, abysses, and canyons, including the impressive Grand Canyon. It is in this grand variety of topographies that recreational activities and camping opportunities abound.
In 2000 and 2001, former President Bill Clinton established five new national monuments in Arizona: Grand Canyon-Parashant, Vermilion Cliffs, Agua Fria, Sonoran Desert, and Ironwood Forest. These new national monuments encompass some of the state's most biologically and culturally rich wildlands. There's something for everyone in the new edition of Exploring Arizona's Wild Areas.

why some wild areas aren't included.......2005-01-21
second paragraph of preface (page 11) says:
"...I visited most, but not all, of arizona's wilderness areas. Entry to some is blocked by private land, to others by Indian reservation lands. Access to a handful is too difficult and recreational opportunities to include them in a guide of this sort."
So the author made a choice of what to include, while staying within the constraints of a 300 page book. It is arguably a reasonable choice. Maybe it displays a marketing decision to pitch the book more toward the majority of the hiking audience for whom convenience probably matters a lot rather than hardcore remote wilderness lovers. I would have prefer inclusion of all wilderness areas too, but it is still a solid book with a lot of good photos. Maybe a second addition, if there ever is one, will include more or all areas.
Some good information, but far from comprehensive.......2002-01-23
One might assume that a book titled Guide to Arizona's Wilderness Areas would include information on all such wilderness areas. That would be an incorrect assumption. Although the information in the book is good, particularly with regard to wilderness areas near the Grand Canyon, it completely skips such wilderness areas such as Mount Nutt, Wabayuma Peak, Warm Springs, Arrastra Mtn., Table Top, and Upper Burro Creek. All of these wilderness areas were established in 1990, well before the 1999 publication date. The lack of information on these wilderness areas makes one wonder how up-to-date the information in the book is.
Excellent hiker resource.......2000-05-18
This is a fine book describing 64 hikes throughout Arizon's wilderness areas. It has color pictures to encourage you to visit each area, and color maps to locate the trailhead and the trails. The driving & trail descriptions are detailed and (for the dozen hikes I've done) quite accurate. The areas are color-coded for reference, and each hike has a fact box for length, altitude, and difficulty so it's easy to search for a weekend destination. I was puzzled by the omision of the Pine Mountain wilderness area, and wonder if others might be missing, too. Nonetheless, if you're looking for hikes in Arizona outside the Park system, this is a gem.

Superb guide to Arizona wilderness areas.......2000-08-01
This is an excellent guide for hikers to the wilderness areas in Arizona. It includes many fine areas, such as Apache Creek , Cedar Bench, and Pine Mountain not covered in the newer "Guide to Arizona Wilderness Areas."
Each of the 87 areas includes a quick summary of important info such as distance & elevation, detailed instructions to reach the areas and find the trailheads (and whether 4WD is required), a basic map of the wilderness area (including access roads and designated trails), discussion of geology, plants, wildlife, and sometimes historical notes. Many areas include B&W pictures.
Some areas have descriptions of activities beyond hiking, such as river running, rock climbing, and cross-country skiing.
Exemplary collection of Arizonaýs Wild Areas.......1999-01-01
Covering over eighty designated wilderness areas you will be suprised. The focus of the book is to provide valuable information. Geology, history, plants, wildlife, and seasons to explore are well documented. Areas rarely published make this a great book. I agree with Todd Tiddyman's review, you will enjoy this book time and time again.
A Must For Hiking Arizona.......1997-08-10
This book is one of Scott Warren's exemplary outdoor-related books. This mammoth effort includes area and trail descriptions for 87 of Arizona's Wild Areas. Descriptions of each area include statistics, hiking seasons recommended, plants and wildlife, geology, and a hiking narrative which includes good trail information as well as detailed information on how to access trailheads. An excellent basic map detailing every trail accompanies each area. This book is the first one I reach for when I am looking for Arizona hiking information. I am sure it will be yours too

Book Description
During the 2002 Winter Olympic Games, figure skating nearly lost its edge. The Russian gold medal debacle in the Pair Event publicly revealed the hidden world of bribery and collusion that is standard operating procedure across the sport. In On Edge, former Olympic level judge and competitive figure skater, Jon Jackson, bares the facts of the figure skating world—the image-making and social climbing, the prescription drug abuse, the affairs, the delusions of grandeur, and power-hungry scheming. He takes readers on a journey spanning 20 years through the private hotel rooms and hospitality suites where the culture thrives and multiplies, culminating in the days, weeks, and months following the Salt Lake City gold medal scandal.
Rebelling against this culture of nightly cocktail parties, where judges predetermine the next day’s winners, Jackson co-created the World Skating Federation in hopes of freeing the industry from the stranglehold of the seemingly omnipotent US Figure Skating Association (USFSA). The fallout was immediate. Detailing his battle with the USFSA, Jackson reveals his reservations about the continued corruption and the new scoring system, setting the stage for an even more dramatic and controversial scandal waiting to happen at the 2006 Olympic Winter Games in Turin, Italy.

Insider Look.......2007-01-30
I have to admit that I picked up the book because of the catchy title. I expected to find nonstop gossip and talk about how corruption is heavily prevalent in figure skating and how "top skaters" get screwed.
The beginning of the book covers Jackson's childhood, in which he describes how he first got involved with skating. He describes how the beginning of his skating career was constantly under the control of a "family friend," Charles Kennedy, a wealthy individual who had connections with top figure skating figures such as the Propotonovs. Furthermore, Jackson illustrates the troubles he faced as a young boy trying to come to terms with his sexuality as a gay man.
There are some notable sections in the book that is directly connected to the title of the book. He mentions how many of the judges, from the West (particularly California), tend to rely on strict scrutiny and mandatory socializing among judges, a procedure Jackson dislikes because he rather spend time chatting to the skaters and their families. Jackson notes that he would have never been able to rise to the higher levels as a skating judge unless he was forced to socialize with the other judges. In addition, Jackson mentions several well-known figure skating names such as Tonya Harding, Irina Slutskaya, Michelle Kwan, Rudy Galindo, Kyoko Ina and John Zimmerman, and Jamie Salé and David Pelletier. He argues that Harding might have been unfairly treated and how Slutskaya (and other top Russian skaters) are heavily favored to win due to the influence of "Russian propaganda" and the underground Russian mafia. During moments like these, it's hard as a reader to differentiate between personal bias or truth. Regardless of these factors, Jackson paints a humorous description. Also, before I forget to mention, Jackson ends each chapter with a bit of trivia describing the wins, losses or scandalous news of a Russian figure skater(s).
Jackson made it his mission to target certain individuals in US Figure Skating (the organization) and the International Skating Union. He criticizes head officials such as Phyllis Howard (USFS) and Octavio Cinquanta (ISU) for behind-the-scene manuevers that Jackson believed sacrificed the aspirations of American figure skaters such as Ina and Zimmerman immediately after the Winter Olympic that caused the gold-medal controversy. Personally, I never heard of Howard or Cinquanta but Jackson does not hide his dislike for these two individuals, an opinion I understand now after reading the book.
The end of the book primarily focuses on the World Skating Federation, an organization that Jackson and several of his other judging colleagues created in hopes to become a IOC-recognized judging group. Unfortunately, as the readers learn, the WSF loses its lawsuit against the International Skating Union.
Overall, the book was humorous and a fun read. I would definitely recommend it to any figure skating fan. Of course, Jackson's outspoken voice might upset some readers but if you put that aside, the book is a delight.
A beautiful sport's ugly secrets exposed.......2006-06-05
I endorse this book not only as an Amazon Reviewer but as a skater. The dirty deals, corrupt judging, and federation attempts to advance their favorite skaters at the expense of equally talented but less-popular athletes (who, for whatever reason, don't fit their cookie-cutter out of date "image"), Jackson tells all. Should be required viewing for everyone in the sport, especially the federations, who must take a hard look at their own ethics and make some changes.
Im whiter than white.......2006-03-22
This book goes more into the detail of this judge "coming out" rather than the real issues in the skating world. He talks about encounters with other gay judges which have nothing to do with the scandal in Salt Lake City or the alledged corruption at the ISU and USFSA. He fails to make his case and points fingers without facts.
An Edgy "On Edge".......2006-03-21
If you think figure skating is crooked, this book comes close to absolutely proving it. It's no wonder that the author, an international judge, appears to have been booted out by the figure skating establishment over his attempt to set up a rival figure skating union. The book covers the author's not particularly distinguished skating career and his coming out, aspects of his life I somewhat surprisingly intereting. He declines to diss dirt about the skaters, but does rip the judging establishment into small pieces.
It's all true!.......2006-02-28
Unfortunately what he says is true. I am a USFSA Gold Medalist (Figures and Freestyle) and a USFSA judge (though I don't like to admit it). Judges who have little to no skating experience seem to prevail in this sport. The corruption is even in the lower levels of skating. This book rings so true that it's upsetting. I couldn't read it before going to sleep. With each page I hoped the judges that I liked and respected were not named. I'm glad someone had the nerve to speak out for the skaters.

Not your father's travel book.......2004-03-31
These folks at Compass American have put together a great, readable book about a diverse state. Kudos to contributing writer Dan Stivers for his offbeat, often hilarious introduction to my eclectic hometown of Ann Arbor (ex: WEATHER: Winters can live up to Michigan's former motto of Water Winter Wonderland, or be marked by week after week of single-digits and howling winds--a sunless horror, devoid of joy or hope.). The best book on Michigan I've yet to read, and I've read a few -

Customer Reviews:
Straight forward and to the point reading.......2007-05-17
Greg Patti's book offers a quick and "no nonsense" approach to reverse mortgages. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking information on this topic. Great read for seniors!
Reverse Mortgages by Greg Patti- A Great Usable Guide.......2006-09-22
I first discovered this book through the author's website, but it's nice to also find it here on Amazon. Anyway, with aging parents and in-laws, I was looking ahead for ways to help pay for the inevitable long term health care expenses that's coming around the corner. I'm talking upwards of $5000 per month...each! So after some hunting around the net, I discovered reverse mortgages and found Greg Patti's book.
He talks about the most common scenarios, offers a decision chart, and gives real recommendations as to how to get your payouts. I like the stuff on how not to get ripped off. As far as I could tell he's not selling RMs, so I reckon he's real about his recommendations. It's pretty easy to read, but he's also got "executive summary" versions available if you're too lazy to read this one. Looks like it costs a bit more here compared to other RM books, but it's cheap enough. The info coming from someone of his financial background makes it justifiable.
GREAT reference!.......2006-09-02
I'd heard of reverse mortgages but hadn't seriously thought about them because it seemed that all the places where I could get information were actually selling something. Also, who has the time to spend 60 hours researching a mortgage? This book is perfect because the author is not trying to sell a reverse mortgage and has a tremendous financial background. All the information I need is packaged in one easy reference with lots of advice on who to contact if you want further information on a topic. I loved the "Quick Answers" section because I managed to pick out the questions that would allow me to decide whether I even want to delve further into the concept. Let's face it, if I don't have to learn about mortgages, I'd rather not. But I was able to quickly determine that yes, a reverse mortgage would be a really great thing for my parents. The large text is great for my dad who's vision isn't what it used to be. Lots of examples. Breaks down complicated and confusing concepts into easy to digest tables and bullets. This book doesn't just lay out the facts, it gives great recommendations and tips. Shows actual forms so you can get comfortable with the process. Gives you the list of all the things you'll need to get a loan, questions to ask your broker, and definitions of the financial jargon. Great book. Highly recommended.
Reverse mortgages-Patti.......2006-08-23
I particularly like the large print as this book is intended or seniors to read. Very easy to understand and had great money saving ideas. It would be nice if this book would be available in spanish. I know several hispancic seniors that would benefit from the information in this book.

The Right Stuff - a really good guide.......2006-08-11
What I needed on this topic was a well laid out and readable guide that gives me the right information without overwhelming me with details. This book does a good job of that. Right up front was a great idea, give me the FAQs in the first few pages, and then tell me what chapter to look in for the details. I also like the way he clearly identifies and summarizes the key concepts for the section you're reading on the left hand page. This book made a complex topic pretty easy to understand and the structure of it also makes it easy to go back and find something later. This is the best of the books I've seen on Reverse Mortages.

life isn't perfect.......2000-02-29
This was a great read. Very cool. Courtney ends up learning life isn't about money or things, but about family and friends, she helps support the family, makes new friends, and gets the cute guy in the end.(that part you gotta' love!) And learns a better and happier way of living, and the family is comfortable in their new situation. It gives you an upbeat look on some of the hardships of life, when the family has to come closer together, and finds their pace in life.
This is a GREAT book!.......2000-02-13
OK, I'm not all that great at explaining books..or anything really, for that matter but I just want to say that this book had a great plot and storyline.. and somewhere in there (i kno most teens- if ur like me hate the word i'm bout to use or maybe rather the phrase--) the moral or lesson was really good too..I don't want to say too much cuz i might give the whole thing away, but it basicly just showed me how u have to take things in life as they come.."When life sends you a lemon, make lemonade" I kno that is prolly one of the more stupid sayings out there but its really true and this book is definately one u should read!
Great Book.......1999-11-15
This book was really good its about this girl named Christina whos dad loses his job and so everyone in the family has to get a job to support the family. Christina takes a job at the Victoria Cafe and being poor changes her life for good. This book made me really appreciate everything I have and to not take things I get for granted.
great real life situation.......1998-10-22
this was such a great book that supports that not everyone can have everything, and some people have to work hard to have what they really need. I totally recomend this book.

Product Description
If you are looking for secrets, do not read this book, for I do not know a single secret. On the other hand, if you would like to enter deeper into Stillness, perhaps this book is for you. As I read the letters in this book, I felt moved by the power in them. I felt strength and hope surge in me. I felt truly stunned that I had written them. But mostly I felt humbled. In reading these letters, I see that I am a wise man. Or to be more exact, I sometimes stumble over wisdom and fall so hard that even I recognize it! But I am also just John, confused, frightened, and sometimes bumbling. As a young man, I was scarred by life; and that young man is in these letters. I was full of pain. I hurt everyone I loved. Lord knows I wanted to be a good man, but there was so much hurt and anger stored in me that no matter how much I tried to do the right thing, I would sabotage myself. I loved deeply, but my love was always mingled with a desperate need to be accepted. And invariably I drove away those I loved. But now, as I enter more and more into what I call Stillness, I feel somehow untouched by the hardships of my life. I feel young. I feel silly. I seek peace, but I am unafraid to speak my truth. I can love deeply with no expectation of anything in return. I am unpredictable. I am a little wild. I am intense, very intense. I love to hug and dance and sing. I am learning to treat myself with compassion, and as I do, I am healed. And as I am healed, my sense of Stillness deepens.

Letters to My Friends.......2007-09-20
This is a remarkable book-- It poses a difficulty in reviewing because it is written on so many levels. John writes these letters to "friends" not "disciples", that is, to equals with whom he wants to share his bewildering and joyous uncoverings.
On October 2, when at Still Meadows along the Clackamas River he experiences that he is not only his thoughts but also the Stillness within, eternal and unchanging, and what is more, that both aspects of himself can exist simultaneously. That means you, I, and the multitudes sharing this experience called human life, with all its frustrations, inadequacies, imperfections of all sorts, are not separate from an underlying Stillness that holds us in ineffable acceptance and love. In compassionate radical acceptance of our human/divine wholeness we can feel sacred connection with all; including the orphan, disabled veteran , derelict, grieving friend, dancing beloved; both within and without.
And after each epistle, we party with Baba Ram Jahn, and his beloved daughter/questioner. No punnery nor punditry is excluded from the playfulness.
If an invitation to a tea party with Alice and the White Rabbit; the Little Prince and the Dali Lama --with readings from Tao Te Ching and the Sunday Comics--intrigues you, don't miss this book. Your host, the clown prince of unenlightenment, John Conley.
This book is a comfort on a cold night and lends itself to being read aloud with a soul friend. It is a treasure and deserves to be lifted from hiddenness to find its place in the sun with those who recognize its true value.

Letters to My Friends.......2007-09-17
John writes from his heart to the hearts of his readers. He opens his life to show us how to laugh at ourselves and move from endlessly thinking to simply letting go through the practice of Stillness. In his candid and self depreciating style, he teaches by example. In many of the letters I can see my own life and his through skillful word smithing I can laugh at myself and find inspiration to be better than my smallest self.
This book is a quiet treasure.
Gentle, Human, Inspiring and Amusing.......2007-09-17
What a lovely, approachable and amusing addition to the spiritual practices of mindfulness, stillness, gentleness, etc.
This book presents a selection of letters to John's friends. Each letter talks to the issues of the week in a personal, human, mindful, and often very moving way. John approaches such issues as embracing being wrong, worrying about tomorrow, greeting suffering with an open heart, and most important finding that stillness, that peace that is often so illusive but always available. At the end of each letter is a dialogue with Baba Ram Jahn -- often profound, sometimes absurd; but always clever, engaging and amusing. . . .
You will be moved and inspired by this book; and there will be times when you will laugh out loud. There is real substance here, and kindness, and laughter as John shares his insights on the struggles we all face in finding our center, our peace, our stillness in the midst of an uncentered world.
This book is very personal and utterly charming. I highly recommend it!!!!
The heart of feelings.......2007-09-05
Letters to my friends is a refreshing look at living, loving and following your bliss.I enjoy these these writings for their insight, succinct humaness and of course their humor.
A Sense Of Bliss.......2007-08-03
I was touched and inspired by the very real love that came through the letters in this book. I relate to what John shares in them. It is so precious, yet rarely spoken of by other authors. He made me curious about this Stillness he experiences. And he explained in a gentle and humorous way that it's also possible for me.
Reading "Letters to My Friends" has given me a desire to meditate in order to go into that space of Stillness. I used to think that serenity was an experience that would come unbidden, no matter how much I wanted to go there. It is difficult to choose to lose yourself. Yet after reading this book and practicing a few of the simple meditations, I feel as though I am being led to a sense of this deep all encompassing state of bliss myself.
