Book Description
The New York Times bestseller Now I Can Die in Peace is now available in paperback with a new afterword (and more footnotes) by the author"The Red Sox won the World Series." To Citizen No. 1 of Red Sox Nation, those seven words meant "No more 1918' chants. No more smug glances from Yankee fans. No more worrying about living an entire life -- that's eighty years, followed by death -- without seeing the Red Sox win a Series." But once he was able -- finally -- to type those life-changing words, Bill Simmons decided to look back at his "Sports Guy" columns for the last five years to find out how the miracle came to pass. And that's where the trouble began. The result is Now I Can Die in Peace, a hilarious and fresh new look at some of the best sportswriting in America, with sharp, critical commentary (and fresh insights) from the guy who wrote it in the first place.
Customer Reviews:
Red Sox Fanatic.......2007-09-29
My husband is a Red Sox fan! He is not much of a reader but when I surprised him with this, he fell in love. Since buying it, he has read it several times! highly recommended!
a journey out of sports purgatory.......2007-08-29
"...And he was one-third of the infamous 1996 Boston coaching staff (along with Tim Johnson and Kevin Kennedy)that stood motionless on the top step of the dugout, wearing matching bushy mustaches, Raybans and warmup jackets, looking like they were participating in a photo shoot for gay baseball porn."
The book contains articles written between 1998 and 2006 (in the new paperback), and it covers those Red Sox teams pretty extensively, with a HUGE focus on the 2003-2004 teams. Even so, Simmons occaionally provides the readers with tales from earlier Red Sox seasons (and other Boston sport teams too).
He's not an objective columnist by any standard: he lives and dies with the Red Sox, and it makes his book both personal and entertaining. Through his writing, we get to know his friends, wife and most significantly, his father. He weaves in college anecdotes, family arguments, weddings, drunkalogues, and a myriad of pop-culture references into most of his articles. They fit in and add to his topics.
It's a fun book. A must for any Red Sox fan, and along with "Mind Game", it's the best book about the 2004 Red Sox.
One final note: I'm a Yankee fan.
Inspirational.......2007-07-27
A great book if you are a sports fan, who enjoys narratives, passion and motivation from another human being and a moving story.
Simmons hits a homerun.......2007-05-19
I purchased this book from Books-A-Million last September, and loved it. Despite being a St. Louis sports fan, I was obliged to pick up this book. I've always been a Simmons fan because of the humor he includes in what he writes and his witty writing altogether. He displays many archives from 1998 to 2004 on the title run. And the asides on the left and right columns on the page are excellent as to what he then thought of the columns he wrote in different sections of how he wrote them. I recommend this book to any Red Sox fan (all Sox fans probably have it now though), anyone who is much like me that is a fan of Simmons, or any general baseball fan.
Humor for Boston Fans.......2007-04-10
Boston Red Sox fans will laugh hysterically while they read this book on the history of the Red Sox and their 2004 World Series win.

Book Description
A legacy of hatred can be a terrible force in life, over which not even an enduring love and all the fruits of material success may prevail. Catherine Cookson explores this theme in a major novel that will absorb and enthral her readers as irresistibly as any she has written.
Roddy Greenbank was brought by his father to the remote Northumberland community of Langley in the autumn of 1807. Within hours of their arrival, however, the father had met a violent death, and the boy was left with all memory gone of his past life.
Adopted and raised by old Kate Makepeace, Roddy found his closest companions in Hal Roystan and Mary Ellen Lee. These three stand at the heart of a richly eventful narrative that spans the first half of the nineteenth century, their lives lastingly intertwined by the inexorable demands of a strange and somewhat cruel destiny.
A DINNER OF HERBS displays outstandingly Catherine Cookson's true storyteller's gift.
Customer Reviews:
as always thoroughly readable and enjoyable.......1997-05-01
The characters are wonderful, the story very readable and I read it right through and couldn't put it down.
What a wonderful person Catherine Cookson is and what a wonderful collection of stories she has given us.
My all time favourite has to be The Round Tower followed closely by the Mallen series and the Golden Straw.
May we get many many more
Excellent, one of her best.......1997-02-22

Book Description
A star of two well-remembered television series, "The FBI" and "77 Sunset Strip ," Efrem Zimbalist, Jr. looks back on the many different roads he has traveled in his lifetime and recreates his most memorable experiences in the prose of a true stylist. The son of two legendary musical talents, the violinist Efrem Zimbalist and the operatic soprano Alma Gluck, Efrem Jr. grew up on an estate in the Connecticut countryside. Long before he was a recognized actor, Zimbalist broke a show business barrier as coproducer of Gian Carlo Menotti's operatic double bill, The Medium and The Telephone, on Broadway. Its critical and (surprising) commercial success led to Zimbalist's coproduction of Menotti's next opera, The Consul, also on Broadway and also with gratifying results, including the Pulitzer Prize.
Customer Reviews:
Great read.......2006-11-04
I really enjoyed this book. I just love Efrem anyway but never knew much about his life story. I thought it gave an insightful look in to Efrem's past. My only problem was that it was too short. I would have loved a bit more details on his personal life. What a gentleman he is, and a wonderful role model for young people especially in this day and age.
My hopes for a clear picture........2004-02-04
I have been a fan of Mr Zimbalist for 47 years. I was looking forward to all my questions being answered, but although this book was very interesting, it left more story out than was told.
I felt the book went together more as journal entries for family and friends than for fans and followers. Mr. Zimbalist please forgive syntac errors. R. Harris of N Jersey.
A first-rate, engaging portrait of a life well lived.......2003-10-14
My Dinner Of Herbs is the personal and engaging memoir of Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., the son of renowned soprano Alma Gluck and the acclaimed violinist Efrem Zimbalist. His own career included work in the theater, talent as a producer, a well-deserved Pulitzer Prize for "The Consul" (which he produced with Chandler Cowles), as well as numerous television specials and series. My Dinner Of Herbs is a thoroughly delightful and entertaining memoir packed with a informed and informative personal view of the Hollywood entertainment business, anecdotes of unforgettable people, and the memorable challenges that mark life, ranging from Efrem Zimbalist Jr.'s hard work to earn a Yale degree, to his military service in World War II. A first-rate, engaging portrait of a life well lived, My Dinner Of Herbs is very highly recommended reading which is especially recommended to those with an interest in Hollywood autobiographies and memoirs.
I have been in love with this man..........2003-10-04
...since I was a child. His character Stuart Bailey on "77 Sunset Strip" was so charming, gentlemanly, worldly, and gorgeous-- and it turns out he's that way in real life, too. And what a vocabulary! I had to stop to look up a few things. The text is laced through with love, affection, humor, and charm. Easy and delightful reading.
My Dinner of Herbs.......2003-09-27
Parents who have tried to raise their children in the best classical tradition will get the shaking agonies from the first portion of this book as the author mischiefs his way out of the heritage and magnificient opportunities offered him. But read on. All is not lost. One cannot take issue with the title, it is Holy Scripture. But what about this life could be called the "dinner of herbs?" Most readers will not see life as a Hollywood star as the simple and humble life. It is only in the context of the life of the classical and highly successful muscians who raised him, and his own way of taking his gifts and putting them to use, that this can be seen by the receptive reader.Absorbing, enjoying every minute of life and every relationship and communicating that joy is the message of this book.

Obnoxious Teen Alcoholic.......2007-06-14
Chris hasn't had the easiest time in life. His mother died when he was a small child. His father was in the army and away from home a lot of the time, so sent him and his older sister to live with their aunt. Chris and his aunt have always clashed; she nags him too much and so he doesn't pay her much attention. When his sister goes to college, Chris and his aunt are left alone, and both are unhappy.
The only two things that bring Chris happiness are football and drinking. He is a pretty good football player, on his high school's varsity team, and this season is shaping up to be the best season ever, with a tough new coach driving them to win.
But as the football team is finding success, Chris is getting worse and worse at controlling his own life. His grades are awful and his drinking is getting steadily more disruptive, especially when drinking causes him to do things he doesn't really want to do. Will he be able to get himself under control?
I liked the support the characters in this book showed for Chris, especially his history teacher who wasn't afraid to step in to help him. I also liked reading Chris' journal entries along with his memories of the school year.
I thought Chris' character was incredibly whiny and obnoxious, though. I couldn't believe Polly would continue to be his friend or anyone would be as civil to him as they were.
Imitate The Tiger.......2006-05-16
This was a very good book I normally don't read too much but this book i could barely put it down. This book is about a teenager having problems, he drinks so that was that the start of it he is a linebacker for the football team at his high school. He ends up goin to rehab and learning from his mistakes. This book would probably be good for young teens goin through tough times.
The Tiger and it's ups and downs........................2003-03-24
Imitate The Tiger
By Jan Cheripko.
The senior at Valley View High, Christopher Serbro was given away when he was a little boy to his Aunt Catherine by his father who was a low paid alcoholic that didn't know how to take care of his children. His mother's death was too much to handle for his father. Before Christopher's mother died, Chris's father was in the military. That's all he knew how to do. He would go to work drunk, come home drunk, and when his wife died one day, he didn't know what to do.
Chris is an athlete. Chris plays football for the Valley View High team. He loves football because it's the only way he can get away from his problems such as his father, and Chris's ex girlfriend leaving him for someone else. Chris just likes to run away. He doesn't know how to control his feelings, and his abuse of alcohol. He doesn't know how to control his thirst for alcohol and he blames everything on his father. When Chris does drink, and people remind him that he drinks too much he tells them that he isn't an alcoholic like his father. Deep down inside he knows they are right about his drinking habits. Christopher's friends are not the best in the world, sometimes but there are there.
The audience should read this book because it's a good learning experience about a boy becoming a man that has alcoholic problems in his life. To learn how Chris to control his anger and his family. Suddenly he doesn't know whom to trust because he has no friends. What he's feeling when he is alone at home or when someone hit's him he doesn't know how to react he wants to hit them back because reflexes tells him to but he doesn't know what to do. Chris is an emotional boy that cry's when he get hits but that's him he just doesn't know how to handle things he wasn't brought up in a life that was loveable life so when he cry's he wants someone to hold him, and love him but no ones there.
Chris is an American citizen that lives in the United States. He lives with his Aunt Catherine in an old house. Chris goes to school at Valley View High School.
My review.......2003-03-24
Chris Serbo is a senior in high school that is faced with the problem that is ruining his life, alcohol. In Imitate The Tiger by Jan Cheripko he is desperately trapped in a deep hole that he cannot get out of, for he lost his girlfriend, his grades are dropping, and his relationship with his aunt is deteriorating.
He lives with his aunt because his mother is dead and his father is a drunk in the army and can't be there for him. Chris plays football for love from his coach, John Popano and his best friend Billy Krovats and his friend Polly play a big role in that they are there for Chris when he needs to talk about his problems. The only way he can disappear out of the trap is the wonderful feeling of hitting someone in football or the great sensation of getting drunk, but he doesn't quite understand what alcohol is doing to him. He thinks he has control over his life but through the book he learns the truth about himself.
I believe that many teenagers could relate to the situations Chris is dealt with and the enjoyment comes from how Chris is finding himself and how it all ends up. I believe it is a great book and to me it seems like Chris Serbo is a real kid in a real world.
Imitate the Tiger.......2003-03-24
Imitate the Tiger
The book that I recently read was Imitate the Tiger written by Jan Cheripko. The story main character is Chris Serbo, a senior at Valley View High. Chris loves football and is athletic, but he likes to drink too much. He faces many conflicts and obstacles when he starts drinking constantly. He slowly changes and starts to lose all his loved ones. Since his mother died and his father wasn't capable of keeping Chris, he lives with his Aunt Catherine. He comes in drunk just about every night, but it is just a normal life for Chris until he makes the wrong decision. Now he is trying to find his way out of this horrible nightmare. His grades are starting to drop if he doesn't shape up he might fail school, and get kicked out of the house. Chris also is trying to play in the championship game he has little time, and very small choices on what to do with life, but the night of the school dance ignites all of his problems. He has to come face to face with his fears to save everything he loves.
Mrs. Whittaker, Chris' teacher at Valley View High is trying to understand why Chris is changing. He is a good student, but when his grades start dropping she is a mission to see what's up. She thinks Chris is drinking but doesn't have any proof. Chris thinks that she is out to get him, but he find out that she is trying to help. He has two decisions, and time is running out fast. He has to race against the clock to turn his life around and I think time has just run out.
I think this book was great. I really liked how the author made the story actually come to life, I felt like I was in the story. It shows me a description on how a senior's life is. It also tells people about drinking, you shouldn't do it or you could lose everything that you love. I recommend this book to all people who like sports and that like books with many tragic conflicts. Anyone who likes to actually get into a story should read this. It gives you great pictures in your mind on a senior's life that plays football and drinks. It also can get you into different mood swings like when he gets beat up, you feel mad and when he broke up with his girlfriend you feel sorry for him.
