Customer Reviews:
Sorely missing the old format.......2006-07-28
Although I greatly miss information presented from years gone by (records held, awards, managerial playing stats, achievements et al.) I do enjoy the new material (Scouting Reports, pitcher hitting totals and full stat lines (except for sacrifice hits and sacrfice flies), I still find it a cover-to-cover must read.
THE 2006 BASEBALL REGISTER & FANTASY HANDBOOK!.......2006-05-19
I purchased my first "Baseball Register" in 1962,when there were only twenty teams, the first year there were even that many and many changes have occurred, over the years.Back in 1962 the register included the players' signature, photo, and marriage status and the complete playing and mangerial records of all the managers and all the coaches, but no scouting reports or players' rating, and it cost only $5.00.Most, or at least many, baseball fans love stats and this volume is just chuck full of all kinds of stats.A MUST for Baseball fans.
Baseball Utopia.......2006-03-18
The Sporting News has always made a great reference book called the Baseball Register. It had all the numbers you needed for all the major leaguers. Now they have added scouting reports and rankings for each of those players. This book now combines all the data and the written descriptions in one handy place. I don't know how I will watch baseball without it in the future.
This aint no scouting notebook.......2006-03-04
My favorite baseball resource book each year was the Scouting Notebook. Sporting News discountined it this year and included a dumbed down version within the Baseball Register.
I can tell you I will never purchase this product again and I'm afraid Sporting News will think this new product is a sucess because Scouting Notebook purchasers probably purchased it but I'm sure they will not make that mistake twice.
Baseball Register or Bill James?.......2006-02-24
I love Bill James' (ostensible) edition of this book because it includes win shares and runs created-- two essential stats for evaluating players. Unfortunately because the James book is rushed to press months before "The Baseball Register" it does not include post season stats. This is an egregious omission. "The Register" does include these stats. The Register also includes trades and career history which the James' book does not. These two inclusions make "The Register", for me, a better get. If only it included win shares and runs created "The Register" would be excellent and would rate 5 stars instead of 4.
One more point: This year "The Register" includes, as its "fantasy" aspect, a paragraph on each player that in a stat book, it seems to me, is peculiarly subjective. These paragraphs do not take into account any serious sabrmetric evaluations of the players and as such are often ill-informed and probably a poor "fantasy" guide. For example Ivan Rodriguez, despite advancing age and declining stats-- a sub-300 onbase average in 05-- is given a 9.0--one of the highest ratings. IRod would be a huge gamble as a fantasy player. I think "The Register" was fine without the "Fantasy" paragraphs and should return to its previous form.

One of the best and most iconic Hulk stories ever.......2007-05-11
Written during the early height of Peter David unheralded run on the Incredible Hulk; Ground Zero stands as one of the best and most iconic Hulk stories ever. In this TPB, the Hulk is on a mission to stop the production of Gamma weapons, and his arch nemesis the Leader stands in his way along with some of his warriors. Everything about Ground Zero stands as classic Hulk: from the operatic action and superb dialogue to the David's vision of the Hulk himself. For newbies to the character, this is not the uncontrolable, green-skinned monster that we all know; instead, this is the grey-skinned, intelligent, and deadly weapon of destruction that is truly a force to be reckoned with. Not to mention that Ground Zero features wonderful art by a pre-Spawn (and even pre-Spider-Man) Todd MacFarlane, and you already know what you're getting here. Ground Zero stands tall as one of the best Hulk stories ever crafted.
Collects issues 340-346.......2005-04-15
The Hulk I knew was green, angry and not so intelligent. This book was a suprise to me since Hulk was strong, grey and intelligent. Point is, he is no Avenger type of guy, more like someone nasty and mean.
Some issues are unsung gems, like the one with man-bull and one with Betsy/Hulk dialogue. Story goes strong, although my fave Peter David's stories are X-Factor 70-90 or so.
Tod McFarlane fans, what are u waiting for?
The Hulk @ GROUND ZERO .......2004-11-17
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, reviewers you have to get in the habit of detailing specifically what issues are collected in these Trades! I've now attempted to find collections of many famous series through the years thanks to the trades,... & I CAN'T figure out what Trades collect what issues. Sure, rarely you'll find a user review who knows what the heck he's doing & lists the collected issue #'s... but c'mon!? what is going on with you people?... If i knew I wouldn't be writing this would I?
The beginning of a legend........2004-11-05
The latter half of Peter David's very first long-running storyarc in The Incredible Hulk is collected here. Featuring the artwork of a pre-Spawn, pre-Spider-Man Todd McFarlane, David skillfully sets the stage for an unforgettable confrontation.
Accompanied by his old friend and partner Rick Jones and a rogue SHIELD agent named Clay Quartermain, the Hulk (actually the crafty, gray-skinned Hulk from the character's early days, not the more familiar, child-like green version) is on a quest to halt the US government's mass-production of the gamma bomb, the very device responsible for his own creation.
Little do they realize that the Hulk's deadliest nemesis, the super-intelligent Leader, has his own wicked plans for the gamma bomb and has sent three of his special warriors to obtain it and dispose of his hated enemy once and for all.
Peter David's clever dialogue and in-depth characterization is in full-swing here. His exploration of the Gray Hulk's personality still stands as one of the highest points in his entire twelve-year run, while Todd McFarlane's art compliments David's writing style exceptionally. From a memorable battle with the X-Men's Wolverine to the Hulk finally facing down the estranged wife of his human alter-ego, McFarlane more than leaves his mark on this beloved character.
With Peter David's much-anticipated return to the Incredible Hulk title in January 2005, Ground Zero is a must-read for long-time Hulk fans and new Hulk fans alike. Enjoy!
pretty good.......2004-03-16
What you've got is a good story with good art. All I can really say about it is that if you like the Hulk or Todd McFarlane you should get this.

Customer Reviews:
A solid book, but could have been better.......2007-07-04
Overall this book gives a very good review of Romita's main work.
The main sampling is from Spider-man. Half of the 22 stories are related to or feature Spider-Man. Including the main ones I consider the most important #39-40 Romita's 1st issues of spider-Man and versus the Green Goblin, #42 1st Mary Jane or at least where we can see her, #50 classic cover and intro of the Kingpin. Also included is the Daredevil #16-17 Romita's first Spider-Man art (he would take of Spider-man's book a copuple of months latter) and Captain America #138 which features a Spider-Man crossover.
As for my complaints:
There is no commentary other than an intro from Romita JR.
Some of the stories: TTA #77 and TOS #77 are penciled over Kirby layouts which takes away from the Romita look. If they are going to do this they could have had the death of Gwen Stacy, which Romita inked over Gil Kane, but it looked much more like Romita's work than these two and from my understanding he was involved in the decision to kill off Gwen. Another two stories that I do not know why they were included are Strange Tales #4 and Menence #6. These stories could have been replaced by the Femizon story which I think is one of, if the not the best Romita work ever done.
Some of the coloring looks like watercolors, bright in one spot and dark in another. It is really bad on Spider-Man #39 with skin tones and the Goblin's cosume fading in and out really badly.
Lastly there is a nice drawing Romita did and painted over by Alex Ross showing the characters Romita helped design or introduce. Mary Jane is in the center where the pages meet, so it is hard to see her and she is split in half. I wish they had put the sketch on one page and a fold out page so that the picture wouldn't be split in two.

Customer Reviews:
A 70'S GIANT-SIZE PARTY.......2005-10-05
Wow...this book really takes me back to the early and mid 1970's when I first started reading comics. I'm pretty sure I owned all, or just about all of these titles. The Giant-size books were always special and were basically annuals. For some reason marvel stopped doing annuals and did these Giant-sized books for a few years before going back to annuals. Obviously the most famous story in this collection is from Giant-size X-men #1 which was the first appearance of the new X-men by Chris Claremont and Dave Cockrum. It may be the single most important comic of the Bronze Age and introduced fans to Storm, Nightcrawler, Colossus, Thunderbird and also included Wolverine, and Banshee.
Giant-Size Fantastic Four #4 introduced Jamie Madrox, the Multiple Man who could duplicate himself whenever he was hit hard enough. madrox was a mutant who would later be a member of X-Factor.
Giant-size Defenders #4 featured a battle between the Defenders and the Squadron Sinister, who were Marvel's version of the Justice League.
Giant Size Super Heroes #1 is one of the earliest books in this collection and fatures Spiderman battliing Morbius The Living Vampire and Man-Wolf.
Giant Size Invaders #1 I think came out before Invaders #1. This was basically a re-teaming of the golden Age All Winners and they were still fighting WWII. Terrible artwork from Frank Robbins makes this tough to read.
Giant Size Creatures features one of Marvels trio of big horror characters from the 1970's, the WereWolf by Night.
Giant Size Avengers were normally always good but this was probably the worst, featuring the All Winners squad and a story by the dependable Roy Thomas.
All in all this is a pretty decent collection. I'm not sure how much interest there is among modern comic buyers but for fans from the 1970's it's a nice bit of nostalgia. Funny thing is, that with the exception of the X-men issue, you could actually get all of these original comics for less than the price of this book as long as you're not looking for them in near mint shape. So that's something to consider.
Fun & Nostalgic but wanted more for the money..........2005-08-10
Fun & Nostalgic but wanted more for the money, there were plenty of other original stories that were self-contained (not part of the on-going story arc of a series) that could have been included as well. The Marvel Team-Up featuring Spider-Man & Dracula or Marvel Super-Villain Team-Up with Dr. Doom & The Sub-Mariner. Or even (yes, I know... the worst, most unfortunately titled) Giant-Size Man-Thing with Bessie the vampire cow for a strange change of taste. I really would liked to have seen the other Fantastic Four Giant Size issues, even though they had tie-ins to other story arcs, and not just in The Fantastic Four series. The other Avengers Giant Size issues can be found in the Celestial Madonna collected release since they are the major part of that story arc, but still I hope they will continue to release other stories/issues in this series
What? No Giant-SIze Man-Thing?.......2005-07-25
This is a stellar, fun collection of Marvel's giants, but I knock it down one star for not including Giant-Size Man-Thing (the name alone merits inclusion!). GS Man-Thing # 1 could easily have replaced GS X-Men # 1, which has been reprinted to DEATH, already!
Otherwise, good show.
RECOMMENDED.
Welcome to the time when Giant(-Size)s walked the Earth! .......2005-06-22
While I have not been impressed with the majority of Marvel's choices for their recent "high-quality" format (aka: overpriced) trade paperbacks, GIANT-SIZE MARVEL is a welcome addition to the ranks. You'll shell out some dough for this one, but you know what? It's actually worth it.
For a `70s Marvel zombie like myself, this trade paperback is pure candy, as it collects a good chunk of the comics published under the Giant-Size banner. The featured stories are from Giant-Size Fantastic Four #4, Giant-Size Avengers #1, Giant-Size Defenders #4, Giant-Size Super-Heroes #1 (Spider-Man), Giant-Size Invaders #1, Giant-Size X-Men #1, and Giant-Size Creatures #1 (Werewolf by Night). For the most part, the G-S books were reserved for special stories: either intros of new characters, major revelations, or plot developments. Consider that this book contains the introductions of Madrox the Multiple Man, Nuklon, the Invaders, Master Man, and Tigra; a shocking revelation from the Whizzer (stop laughing); the return of the Squadron Sinister; the formation of the new X-Men; and Spider-Man vs. both Man-Wolf AND Morbius! That's more than enough material to fill any fanboy's plate and leave them satisfied. While this trade may not qualify as a "best of Marvel" to some, it's certainly a collection of quality stories that should give any reader a clear sign of why Marvel ruled the `70s.
As far as the line-up of talent goes, it's a who's who: writers Len Wein, Roy Thomas, Steve Gerber, Don McGregor, Roger Slifer, and Gerry Conway are teamed with artists Dave Cockrum, John Buscema, Rich Buckler, Don Heck, Gil Kane, Frank Robbins and Don Perlin. In contrast to most Marvel reprints, the color looks superb (though I didn't know the FF's Human Torch had worn a red and yellow uniform at one time???). Also, here's a special mention in the art department: I have to give props to Don Heck - while I have never been a fan of his, his penciling on G-S Defenders is primo.

Customer Reviews:
Visionary author, poor packaging.......2007-07-19
Marvel's line of hardcover Marvel Visionaries books seem like a good idea, but there are a few that while they display the highlighted author's talents, they are poorly assembled. This hardcover TPB, which focuses on legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont, is sadly misassembled thanks to only featuring single issues of his various runs on different series' instead of full storyarcs, which really doesn't display Claremont's talent as a whole to begin with. The issues we get here aren't bad though: the penultimate issue of his legendary Dark Phoenix Saga from Uncanny X-Men, an issue from his Wolverine mini-series (featuring art from Frank Miller), as well as various issues from his runs on Excalibur, New Mutants, Iron Fist, and Daredevil. While what you get here isn't bad, if you start to dig the story you're reading and want to see how it ends, prepare to lay down more cash to pick up the whole thing in TPB form. There's nothing bad here at all, and Claremont is more than worthy of being labeled a visionary, but this poorly assembled TPB fails to display just how great and influential a writer Claremont was way back when.
