1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2003-02-28

Usually books by De Vosjoli are very helpful. This is not one of them. The subject matter does not cover designing the actual cage, something that is essential to a vivarium, but rather gives few resources on where to buy cages. There are some sections that are rather useless as well, including necessary items for a vivarium store. I found this section to be a waste of space, besides not having enough information for one who is actually considering opening a store.
The biggest turn-off for me was that the author showed how egotistical he is through his writing on every page. He seemed to discourage readers, and I felt that he thought one would not be able to create a home for their cold-blooded friend.
I do not think that this is a resource that one needs to own. If you are looking for ideas, flip through the book at a local bookstore but it is neither necessary nor helpful in designing your own vivarium.

4 out of 5 stars Design and Maintenance of Desert Vivaria.......2000-03-19

Very helpful book for setting up an appropriately designed habitat for your desert reptile. A lot of thought and experience went into this book, and it could save you from making mistakes both costly to your pocketbook or your pet's health. Not much info on individual species care. For that, see Lizard Keepers' Handbook.

    Book Description

The volume presents modern research approaches for understanding evolution among members of the family Compositae. The symposium from which the work is derived foregrounded chemical and serological tech- niques, choroplast DNA restrictive site analyses as well as classical methods for investigating the systematics of the family. The usefulness for systematics of serological studies of the main seed storage protein of members of the Compositae and the way patterns of secondary plant constituents in the tribes Vernonieae and Heliantheae can aid in understanding phylogenetic relationship are emphasized. The systematics of the large genus Vernonia was cladistically investigated while experimental taxonomy methods indicated that reproductive isolation is the dom- inant isolating factor in Heliantheae, with geographical isolation occurring in about two thirds of the taxa. This valuable research volume will encourage continued research in the domain of evolutionary botany by plant systematists and phytochemists.

This is simply the best series of books I've found for travel.

The are as the title says "Simply to the point"!

They are a convenient size and are simple to follow.

They break down each location with everything you need: times, dates, closest tube station, cost.

I have used their guides for London, Paris, Venice and Rome and they are 1's in my backpack!

This is just a pamphlet. It doesn't have any photos and the print is very small. I don't believe it is a good value for your money, especially with the addition of shipping and handling. The Eyewittness Guide to London is much more informative and entertaining.

      5 out of 5 stars The only quick-reference guide you'll need.......2000-05-27

For a whirlwind tour of London, the Tripbuilder series is the only guide anyone needs.

First of all, there's a matter of convenience --- the size of this booklet is perfect for stowing in a jacket, or a purse.

Secondly, it's chockful of great information. Points of interest are color-coded to indicate historical significance, if it's appropriate and fun for kids, etc. Best of all, these are all identified, by number, on the colorful map which also provides information on public transportation terminals.

The text is so well-written, and incorporates historical perspectives as well as humorous comments on what we're seeing. The tips on what to do, where to go, etc. are also great.

The Tripbuilder is so recent that it even included reference to the London Eye (gigantic ferris wheel to commemorate the Millennium, courtesy of British Airways).

We felt quite at home with the Tripbuilder, during our lengthy walks as well as our journeys via the subways. The Tripbuilder has been a god-send to us during our trips to various European cities --- and I sincerely hope there will be more cities covered as I will only get these books as my pocket tour guides.

Unless you have all major attractions and tube stations memorized, or have an eidetic memory, this book will relieve stress and save a lot of valuable time. The only drawback is that it is not waterproof.

2 out of 5 stars Not completely accurate........2006-08-14

There are several discrepancies in this book, starting with the title. The top job is an air traffic controller, making approx. $120K a year. Here's the problem: To become an air traffic controller, a person must enroll in an FAA-approved education program and pass a pre-employment test that measures his or her ability to learn the controller's duties. Exceptions are air traffic controllers with prior experience and military veterans. The pre-employment test is currently offered only to students in the FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative Program or the Minneapolis Community & Technical College, Air Traffic Control Training Program. The test is administered by computer and takes about 8 hours to complete. To take the test, an applicant must apply under an open advertisement for air traffic control positions and be chosen to take the examination. When there are many more applicants than available positions, applicants are selected to take the test through random selection. In addition to the pre-employment test, applicants must have 3 years of full-time work experience, have completed a full 4 years of college, or a combination of both. In combining education and experience, 1 year of undergraduate study--30 semester or 45 quarter hours--is equivalent to 9 months of work experience. Certain kinds of aviation experience also may be substituted for these requirements.
That to me says I need a degree! Several other jobs listed in the book are also "mis-informing".

5 out of 5 stars Find the Right Job for You.......2006-02-27

For those who aren't ready to tackle four years of college, there are still some good jobs out there. In 496 pages, this gives the details on the top 300 jobs that don't require that degree. The top paying one is air traffic controller which pays on the average $102,030 a year.
This is a good resource for anyone trying to decide on a career. Another resource is the Occupational Outlook Handbook, which is available in the reference section of most public libraries.

3 out of 5 stars Not as accurate as it seems.......2006-02-09

One of the top 20 jobs they listed was that of the Forest Firefighter. Unfortunately they failed to take into account recent developments in federal Human Resources policy with regard to the federal wildfire service. New policy requires that anyone in a supervisory or managerial position MUST have a certain type of college degree or certain higher educational credits regardless of experience. This means that anyone without a college degree has very limited promoteability and while it might do as a job, it will not result in a career for them. They will certainly not have the salary indicated in this book. Knowing this one must wonder about the accuracy of the other information in this "updated" edition.

        5 out of 5 stars A superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers.......2003-01-06

Collaboratively written by Michael Farr and LaVerne L. Ludden, with additional assistance by Laurence Shatkin, 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is an impressive and thoroughly "user friendly" 449-page compendium of useful lists, statistics, and thorough descriptions of exciting and satisfying jobs, none of which require a college degree. The basics of the trade for everything from advertising sale agents to welding machine operators are presented in a completely reader-friendly format, along with data drawn from government information about the overall makeup of the people who are drawn to each career path. 300 Best Jobs Without A Four-Year Degree is highly recommended as a superb guide for non-college degree job-seekers and otherwise cash-poor students.

Bad things aren’t supposed to happen to good people. But somewhere between home and the softball field, 16-year-old Jody Chapman’s younger brother disappeared, and now the family is falling apart. Her parents hardly speak to each other, her younger sister is angry and bitter, and Jody’s friends, always so important to her, are slowly slipping away. It seems that all anyone can do is wait. Wait—for Michael to walk in the door. Wait—to stop missing him. Wait—to stop waiting. When a private detective can’t uncover a single clue about Michael’s disappearance, Jody’s urgent need to find him drives her to make a last desperate attempt to hold her family together.

1 out of 5 stars Droning, depressing and redundent.......2006-04-17

Endless repetition of depression, desperation, bitterness, anger, hopelessness, coupled with a few swear words. Never would I recommend it, let alone for anyone under the age of 16.
There are far too many pieces of good literature out there to waste ones time on this.

          1 out of 5 stars Where's Michael?.......2006-03-01

Depressing, continious search that leads nowhere. This story would have been a lot better as an actual thriller but fails as a big drama. I hated the book as soon as I finished it.

4 out of 5 stars The Year Without Micheal.......2004-09-22

This book is about a girl named Jody and how she and her family have to cope after her brother Michael disappears. Her parents are thinking about splitting up. They end up sending Jody's younger sister, Kay, who is twelve, to live with her grandma and then to go to boarding school in the fall, because they can't put up with her. Michael doesn't come back, but she and her family figure out how to deal with Michael being gone, and her parents don't split up. I gave this book four stars, because there are some bad words.

          4 out of 5 stars great.......2004-07-02

I read this book more than ten years ago, when I was in junior high school. It was amazing. All the people who were dissappointed by ending should think about the families that really go through this ordeal. For too many of them they never get closure. Soon after reading the book I had the opportunity to meet the author. She was asked if there would ever be a follow up, and her reply was no. In her eyes, Michael had died, and there was nothing left to write.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book Okay Ending.......2004-05-26

This is an awesome book by Pfeffer! It is a great book that I read when I was 10 years old and loved. It is probably meant for kids older than 10, but it is great! Micheal disappears and the family is torn apart. The mother takes it out on her daughters, and they turn against their mom. It is a wonderfully written book but the ending leaves you hanging. You never know what happens to Micheal, and you feel so upset. Why don't we find out what happened? The book leaves you with a powerful feeling for days. I would prefer closure. But the meaning is so much stronger and sticks with you after the end. I wish there was a sequal, but in real life you don't always find out what happened to missing people, so it is very realistic.

1 out of 5 stars NOT GREAT JOBS.......2001-12-01

I liked the idea the author had of helping people without a bachelor's degree. Unfortunately, some of the jobs listed are, quite frankly, a JOKE. An actor has the potential to be a great occupation, but what are the odds of every reader becoming Tom Hanks ? (reality)Most likely they will starve waiting for there big break. I also don't consider a "Taxi Driver" a fullfillng career. The last time I checked a taxi driver was not one of the most highest paying jobs out there. Which leads me to my most important point. Most of these jobs that are listed here, with a few exceptions, are low paying jobs. Money is not the most imprtant thing in life, but the author seems to beleive that you can become a teacher's aide, make $6.50/hour and live happy !!! Does the author realize that someday I may want to retire, and with a low paying job I can't save that much to retire on.

5 out of 5 stars A good book for those who will learn on the job.......2000-08-02

An acedemic education can be a help but is not the answer for many who can learn on the job, or can learn a trade through non-academic schools. Our history is full of such individuals who were highly successful without a degree. This book is an excellent guide to all types of jobs available to job seekers regardless of education.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for a High School Student.......2000-01-19

I purchased this book for my nephew, who was a HS Senior. Although he likes school, college was not for him. Like many HS Seniors, he did not know what he wanted to do, or what kind of careers he might like. I gave him the book. He read at least some of it. I was surprised to see how excited he was after looking at the book. He decided on a career path and has applied and been accepted in a Drafting program at a Vocational School. The book was well worth the excitement in his eyes. He feels focused and for the momement he has found a career for him. The book gives lots of information about careers and what it is like to be a ... He has showed the book to his friends and they seem just as thrilled with the content as he was. I think every HS junior or senior should look at this book for ideas on how to spend the rest of their life.

Too often the institutional church presents God as a celestial, judgmental ruler consigning us to our richly deserved fates in the afterlife. This well-reasoned discourse represents one priest's personal search for the reality of Christ. He shows us how we can hard back to the transcendent lives of the early Christians and become true disciples of Jesus. The message is that God is with us. Following the teachings of Jesus, we too can get to the Promised Land, for Heaven is fellowship with God and Man, here and in the afterlife, now and forever. Alyssa Bresnahan's skillful reading of the book by Susan Beth Pfeffer (BDD, pap. 1988) takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride through the unraveling lives of a typical middle class family faced with uncertainty of the most horrifying kind. When 13-year-old Michael vanishes somewhere between home and the softball field, his parents and sisters, 16-year-old Jody and 9-year-old Kay, are completely unprepared for the emotional devastation his disappearance unleashes. The story of how they cope with the suspicion of foul play and the psychological toll their fear take on their relationships with one another makes for compelling listening. While the family waits for word of Michael, their lives slip into increasing disarray. Mr. and Mrs. Chapman stop speaking to one another, Kay becomes angry and defiant, and Jody finds a wall growing between herself and her friends. There is no neat ending or even any satisfying resolution to Michael's story. Still, the struggles of each member of the Chapman family to come to terms with the ambiguity surrounding Michael's absence and to move forward with their lives despite their loss provide a deftly wrought and riveting story.
