Coherent Acoustic Sediment Flux Probe
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423581385 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A171713. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A high resolution, three component sediment flux probe has been developed to meet the objectives outlined by the National Academy of Science Panel on Coastal Engineering Measurements using very high-frequency coherent acoustic doppler techniques. The Coherent Acoustic Sediment Flux Probe (CASP) system consists of an underwater housing equipped with three 5.2-MHz acoustic transceivers, a single 1.4 MHz transceiver, a pair of precision tilt sensors to correct package orientation tilts, and electronic processing and control modules which output a high speed digital data stream to a shore based processing computer. The instrument package is typically positioned looking downward at the bottom boundary layer to sample the velocity vector and sediment flux vector at a primary measurement volume 25 cm in front of the instrument head. In addition, profiles of sediment concentration are estimated every 1.68 cm along each of the four narrow acoustic beams. Suspended sediment concentrations are inferred from profiles of acoustic backacatter acoustic intensity by measuring the range gated power returns from the 1.3-MHz tranceiver and each of the 5.2-MHz transceivers. The backscatter power levels are converted to sediment concentration profiles using an acoustic model which includes the effects of attenuation due to water and suspended mass, and radial spreading, to produce profiles from 6 cm in front of the instrument head to the sediment bed, up to a range of 1.2 m.

Enhanced Nitrification in Constructed Wetlands Using Ion-Exchange and Biological Regeneration
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423533984 |
Product Description
This is a AIR FORCE INST OF TECH WRIGHT-PATTERSONAFB OH report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A710483. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Constructed wetlands built in northern climates do not adequately remove nitrogen, especially ammoniacal nitrogen, in the winter. Clinoptilolite, an ion-exchange crystal, can be used to store ammonium from wetland effluents during the colder winter months when nitrification is limited by environmental constraints. The ammonium-sorbed clinoptilolite can be biologically regenerated during the summer months, when conditions are more conducive for nitrification. Laboratory scale and pilot scale studies were conducted to prove this hypothesis and develop design criteria for a clinoptilolite supplemental system. Ultimately, two small pilot scale clinoptilolite columns were built that utilized an in-situ nitrifying biomass (Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter) and draw and fill technology. The study showed that ammonium-sorbed clinoptilolite can be bioregenerated using tap water, an in-situ nitrifying biomass, and draw and fill aeration. The process can remove almost 100% of the adsorbed ammonium. The nitrifying biomass can remove at least 94% of the ammonium as nitrate at ambient temperatures as low as 14 degrees centigrade.. Oxygen utilization is extremely efficient in the draw and fill bioregeneration scheme. The nitrifying biomass utilized from 68 - 95% of the available oxygen to oxidize the ammonium adsorbed by the clinoptilolite during the initial stages of regeneration. In practice, a clinoptilolite bed system will reduce constructed wetland design requirements.

Nitrification in Saline Industrial Waste
M.S. Moussa Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9058096718 |
Book Description
Examining the effect of salinity on nitrification, this book discusses the main inhibiting factors causing the effects, what is the maximum acceptable salt level, are ammonia oxidizers or nitrite oxidizers most sensitive to slat stress, can nitrifiers adapt to long term salt stress, and are some specific nitrifiers more resistant to salt stress than others? Bases on research carried out at laboratory scale and in full-scale plants, the book includes mathematical descriptions for salt inhibition on nitrification and to facilitate comparison. The findings form a guideline for more economical and sustainable design and start up of plants dealing with salt in the future.

The book Torn Away" deals with a boy, called Declan who is an Irish Catholic and lives in Falls Road/Belfast. His mother and sister died in a bomb attack which was organised by the Brits. Left alone and filled with wrath and anger, Declan joins the terror group "Holy Terrors". There youngsters learn to build bombs and plan attacks against the British army. However, he shell be brought to his uncle who lives in Canada. Declan tries to refuse because he thinks his uncle Matthew is a coward and a traitor of the country because of immigrating to British Columbia. After a lot of attempts to escape, police manages to take him into his uncle's custody.
Although, his aunt, uncle and the both adopted kids Ana and Thomas are very friendly and caring, Declan still has the wish to return. First a bargain makes him remain: If he stays until after Christmas and joins school, Matthew won't stop Declan leaving and pays his journey home.
But whilst time passes, Declan starts to accept Ana and Thomas as a real brother and sister. He is departed between the family feelings and the so-called "fixer's world", as he calls his new home.
The book "Torn Away" has its focus on the Northern Irish conflicts between Protestants and Catholics. The main reasons of fighting with each other are shown very clearly in this book. It recovers the means which the IRA uses to damage or kill their enemies, the Brits. I like the representation of the strong will-power which is in the Catholic and Protestant mind in order to get through their aim for their country. However, the realisation of the difficult topic about the young terrorist Declan isn't so convincing. At the beginning of the story, the rough reality is shown clearly. But the more Declan is "caught" by the family's generosity and kindness, the more the ending is absolutely clear. To put it in a nutshell: The character of the almost innocent family is too unrealistic and invisible to regard the story as a realistic happening within a Catholic boy's life.
So, thank you James Heneghan, but the moral of "Torn Away" is clear: Violence is never a solution!

We had to read the book in our English-class and so at the beginnig we were not very pleased. But after reading the first chapter which made a strong impact on us, our interest was caught and we enjoyed the novel more and more.
