Book Description
Assesses the role of the MAB Programme in promoting biodiversity conservation and sustainable development, based on the outcome of a Workshop held at the 1st World Conservation Congress, 1996. Included are several key papers which demonstrate experiences from around the world. The Workshop illustrates that although there is no single formula by which the Biosphere Reserves concept can be successfully translated from theory into practice, it is an increasingly important concept.
Book Description
Celebrating African America's contribution to our great national pastime, this comprehensive, lively history combines vivid narrative, visual impact, and a unique statistical component, to recreate the excitement and passion of the Negro Leagues. Packed with stories, biographical essays, scores of archival photographs and other evocative artifacts, it is an important contribution to sports history and a wonderful tribute to the players and teams who wrote a unique chapter in the annals of baseball and American culture.
National Geographic is proud to present this compelling volume, compiled by a who's who of authorities on the subject. Drawing on years of research, Shades of Glory traces the history of black baseball from the 19th century to the first great teams, such as the Cuban Giants, and on to the era of the vibrant barnstorming teams from the East Coast, Chicago, and Cuba. The unparalleled Rube Foster started the first Negro League in 1920, with such dominant teams as the Chicago American Giants and the Kansas City Monarchs. Pittsburgh soon produced two of the greatest teams of all time, the Homestead Grays and the Pittsburgh Crawfords, featuring such stars as Satchel Paige, Josh Gibson, Cool Papa Bell, and many more. Their superb brand of baseball rivaled the best of the major leagues until the historic signing of Jackie Robinson by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Shades of Glory chronicles a bygone era of black baseball and the stars who were shadowed by racial prejudice, but now shine forth in all their sparkling brilliance.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent History.......2006-08-02
There have been only a few books written about the history of black baseball, a glaring error which Shades of Glory helps to correct. Before I read this book, I had no idea of the number of various independent black baseball teams that existed in the late 19th century. Nor did I know of various players who stood out in Black baseball over the decades it existed. Yes of course I knew of Satchel Paige (who I got to see pitch when I was a young teenager), Cool Papa Bell, Buck O'Neill, Josh Gibson, but I learned about so many others through sidebars this book provides. It also provides a detailed history of the few blacks who played in organized baseball before the color line became so rigid. The history provided in this book is very good and details the independent teams that came and went in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the attempts to organize and maintain leagues, how Jackie Robinson's breaking the color barrier affected black baseball, and how his doing this effectively put an end to black baseball (which I'm sure was at the same time exciting and bittersweet to all Negro league ballplayers). I also enjoyed reading about the migration of blacks from the south to Northern cities like Chicago and how that helped further along black baseball in the Windy City.
The stats of various black baseball stars at the back of the book were pretty good, considering that league statistics, standings and even box scores of Negro league games were not always available and remain difficult to track decades later.
One small disappointment I had was there was no mention of black baseball on the West Coast. There were several West Coast black semi pro teams that barnstormed through the first part of the 20th century. There was even a West Coast Negro League (West Coast Baseball Association) that played in 1946. The league champion Oakland Larks later barnstormed after the league folded. I was surprised that there was not even a cursory mention of this team in the book, since one of their pitchers (Lionel Wilson) later became a judge and then mayor of Oakland, California.
Other than this minor issue, I felt this book very well described the "rise and fall" of black baseball.
A Good Narrative.......2006-03-15
Shades of Glory is a very good narrative history of Black Baseball. It includes pre-segregation players such as Moses Fleetwood Walker, the Heyday of the Negro leagues and the teams that continued to play after the color barrier was broken. The book is thorough and I think will help people understand baseball's place in Black society of the time. I found only one weakness - For the real sports statistician, the book is disappointing for its only brief section on players stats.

Book Description
Abundant life can be yours. But in order to live, you first have to die (Matthew 16:25). The fact is, if you have nothing worth dying for, you have nothing worth living for. You may never have to make the ultimate sacrifice, but you are called to daily give up something of this earthly existence to pursue the amazing life Jesus promises to His followers. In To Die For, Ryan Dobson shatters common misconceptions about dying to self, spelling out the realities of the deadly spiritual battle each of us faces. He provides clear guidelines for making life-and-death choices daily and deals with how to overcome the emotional struggles that accompany both failure and success.
The End of Life as You Know Itâ¦
â¦Is the Beginning of Life as You Need It
Why do I feel so dead when God promised me life?
You had such expectations. Such hopes. Such plans. But life isn’t working out the way you thought it would. Jesus answers the void with abundant LIFE. But to get it, you have to dieâdie to self and the quick fixes of this world.
Fact is, if you have nothing worth dying for, you have nothing really worth living for. In To Die For, Ryan Dobson passionately demonstrates what it means to die to self. We may never face a physical death for our faithâ¦but we’re called to daily deny ourselves doses of this earthly existence. And to pursue the amazing LIFE Jesus promises.
Don’t settle for average.
Get a LIFEâ¦
â¦It’s to die for.
Story Behind the Book
One of the main reasons I wrote this book is because I see people today as boredâwe are bored with life. There’s nothing that’s truly worth dying for, which means there’s nothing worth living for either. I see people just filling their lives with diversions, running from one thing to the next. I want to give people the adventure that God has given me. I have truly found something in my life worth fighting forâand worth dying for. I am willing to fight and, if necessary, die for my faith in Christ. It has not made my life a downerâbut has filled my life with adventure.
Customer Reviews:
Does this scare you? Do YOU have any guts?.......2006-03-17
So, do you hate Ryan Dobson? Hmm? It IS the popular thing these days. After all, a lot of people hate his dad, Dr. James Dobson. Know why they are hated? Probably because it is the popular thing to do, therefore a lot of people hate these guys. Guess what? I love these guys, and I love what they do for Christ's Kingdom! Ok? Let's just get that straight. Dr. Dobson has something to be proud of in Ryan. I'm proud of the man, and I've never even met him!
So, he basically challenges us to get a life. WOW, or OW?! I say WOW! Following Christ is, as he puts it, "2 Die 4!" Isn't that awesome? I guess it isn't to some people. There are a lot of people out there deceived by Satan. Hey, the thought crosses your mind, "Who cares if I don't follow Christ?" The answer is Satan does. Because the fact of the matter is that he hates your guts. Satan doesn't want us to live an abundant life. But Jesus does. Jump out of the airplane and skydive with the Savior! Why? Because there is real potential to actually die! Ryan makes an interesting point about our enemy. He says, "Satan doesn't care whether he hooks you one way or another. He'll claim a person's life anyway he can." While you think about that, feed on this. Satan is a loser. Jesus Christ is The Winner! Dobson also talks about our dying to self. What a challenge! And not an easy one at that! It isn't easy to give up our old sin nature, that takes a lot of guts. But when you do it you honor God. This was amazing! I really enjoy Ryan's writing, and I really appreciate his "In your face" approach, because he makes us look in the mirror. You scared yet?
No, following Christ isn't the easiest thing in the world, but it is worth it! In closing, I've used the following illustration before, and it won't hurt to use it again. This is about the Christian who was out with the atheist on a duck hunting trip. The atheist happened to ask the Christian, "What's the difference between you and me?" Well, no sooner did he ask that, and 2 ducks hit the air and the hunter raised his gun... BOOM! BOOM!! One hit the ground dead, the other was wounded and was flapping around like crazy, doing what he could to survive. The Christian looked right at the other fellow and simply said this, "See those ducks? I'm the wounded duck, and I just keep a'strugglin' along, day by day. But you, sir, are the dead duck." Folks, without Christ, we're nothing but dead ducks. And living the abundant life means that we're probably going to be flapping about sometimes, just struggling through. I say it's worth it!!! Do you have the guts to rise up?
Ryan Shares the True Gospel .......2006-01-24
Don't be surprised when people give Ryan's book a bad review. Ryan shares the true Gospel that is not popular and certainly not something you hear on TBN or in most churches today. Many today have given in to an Americanized and politicized gospel of health, wealth, and prosperity. Ryan will challenge young and old to consider the cost and take the cross seriously. The Gospel is not just mercy, grace, and forgiveness... it is death, suffering, and sacrifice. Foolishness to those perishing, but to those being saved it is the POWER of the living God (1 Cor. 1:18). If you are tired of a self-serving gospel that leaves you empty and unsatisfied, get an abundant life... it is truly 2 Die 4!
A great read.......2005-10-01
I really enjoyed this book. Great perspective. Quick read but full of truth. I bought this book because I had to read it again. The first time I read it, I borrowed it from a friend who recommended it. I just had to own my own copy.
I have to wonder.......2005-09-25
Have any of you who slam Dobson as a "biggoted, hate-monger, homophobe" actually read any of his books?
I think the answer to that would be a resounding "no."
I haven't read this particular book, but judging from what I have read of his, I will probably read it. And if that makes me a hateful person in your eyes, so be it. I don't answer to you, I answer to God.
Hateful preaching to the hate-filled choir.......2005-05-12
The book is praised for offering writing for those who don't like to read, including short sentences, fragments, and plenty of exclamation points. Or maybe that should be exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dood!!!!
In other words, it's writing for dumb people. And not just dumb people, but proudly dumb people. That's a real shame, because Christian apologetic writing has, historically, included monumental works and really heavy-hitting authors. Now we have Ryan Dobson playing to the lowest common denominator, the hallmark of a weak argument intended for a benighted audience. By invoking images of righteous murder and holy war, Dobson is engaging in advocacy hardly distinguishable from full-blown sociopathy.
If an equivalent book were written by a Muslim in the US, that author would instantly be disappeared and never heard from again. But because Cryin' Ryan is his father's son, all is forgiven.
Avoid this book because of its hateful message. Avoid this book because the writing is awful and unworthy of reading. Avoid this book because every penny put in Dobson's coffers (even indirectly) is a penny's worth of hateful validation for his bigoted, primitive, and intolerant crusade. Avoid this book simply because it's a waste of your time.

Customer Reviews:
A disappointment.......2000-08-26
The first Lifeguards mini-series was good, and so was the first book of this mini-series. But this was just full of crazy and unbelievable things just to make the plot more intresting, though it in fact makes it boring. All the characters were nothing like themselves, except for Elizabeth, Jessica and Ryan who together make the only good plot in this book. This book and the next one feel as if the other sub-plots are just there to make the book longer, especially the plot with Stu and Nina, which is just too weird. The only realistic plot is the one with Ryan, Jessica and Elizabeth. If you liked the first book in this trilogy, prepare to be disappointed with this one.
Summer Trials.......2000-03-26
Ryan has always prided himself on being in control- after all, who wants to remember the day he was unable to save a little girl because he was too drunk. He sees his AA sponsor drinking though, and when Elizabeth does not show up to celebrate his one year of soberity, will it cause him to fall back to his old ways? Meanwhile, Jess has given up on Ben- who wants to spend the summer talking about books? Her new man causes many raised eyebrows, hurt feelings and could cost her life! Nina finds out that Stu had a fling with one of her enemies- will she still stay with him?
