Book Description
This ambitious book describes the many ways in which invention affects the environment (here defined broadly to include all forms of interaction between humans and nature). The book starts with nature itself and then leads readers to examine the built environment and then specific technologies in areas such as public health and energy.
Each part focuses on a single environmental issue. Topics range widely, from the role of innovation in urban landscapes to the relationship among technological innovation, public health, and the environment. Each part features an essay by a historian, an essay by a practitioner, and a "portrait of innovation" describing an individual whose work has made a difference. The mixture of historians and practitioners is critical because statements about the environment inevitably measure present and future conditions against those of the past. Early in the industrial revolution, smoke stacks were symbols of prosperity; at its end they were regarded as signs of pollution. Historical examples can also lead to the rediscovery of an old technology, as in the revival of straw bale construction. As it explores the history of invention for the environment, the book suggests many new ways to put the past to use for the common good.
Book Description
This book is many things in one: the story of an American researcher's experiences in India and his country; a thoroughly researched and documented study of the policies, prospects, and pragmatics of ecological and ethical decisions that ought to determine our future. It casts the US in roles seldom seen - as partner an proprietor of global environmental projects. The book carries amply relevant and analytical data besides a fairly detailed chapter on an Indo-US initiative that has borne excellent results - the special relationship in human and scientific terms that developed through the 1950s and 60s between Dillon Ripley (of the Smithsonian Institution) and Salim Ali (of the Bombay Natural History Society).

Book Description
Are you dreaming of sipping champagne at the Eiffel Tower, cruising the sunny Caribbean, driving across America, walking The Great Wall of China, or vacationing close to home? Travel Wisdom: Tips, Tools, and Tactics for All Travelers provides the most current tried-and-true travel solutions and strategies and shows you how to maximize any travel experience.
Customer Reviews:
"Great reference book for the traveler".......2006-01-05
While there are a "ga-zillion" books on travel destinations, there are relatively few manuals for what travelers require before, during and after their journeys. Knowing where you want to go is only the tip of the iceberg. Knowing how to go about getting there IS the iceberg.
This is why I think Travel Wisdom is so very important for any traveler. It is a tutorial on preparedness for travel. And, the emphasis is on "wisdom" which to me means first-hand experience and not simply theoretical deductions, conjecture, self diagnosis or guesswork. In short, both Lynne and Hank Christen have infused their wealth of travel knowledge into a concise and practical package for travelers of all levels.
The underlying theme of the book lies in the fact that following the events of 9-11, both domestic and international travel have been greatly impacted by new and greater issues regarding security. We no longer can take for granted many of the routine activities of yesteryear.
Furthermore, no two travelers have the same needs, wants, desires or questions. Yet, somewhere in Travel Wisdom there are easily located answers to almost every question that can be posed on travel preparations, expectations, etiquette, booking, lodging, shopping, and a continuing litany of relevant travel-related subjects.
I highly recommend this book to be read thoroughly by all novice travelers. For the somewhat experienced and veteran travelers, I suggest allowing for a few more ounces of carry-on weight to have Travel Wisdom close by on any trip as a handy reference companion.
Very helpful for seasoned travelers.......2005-06-08
I received this book a week ago. I think it is the best book of genereal travel info I have ever read (and I have read many!) The authors include lots of "travel tips" that I had never thought of, as well as some excellent packing lists and a great list of resources on the internet.
Independent Publishing Reviews-Very practical & fun guide.......2004-02-09
(...)
Very practical guide. Well-organized into helpful chapters on every travel subject imaginable. But not a dry read. Funny little travel predicaments and stories are interspersed throughout. Heavy on the cruise ship/group tours, style of travel; light on low budget treks. Geared a bit more towards the older traveler. An attractive couple. Lynne, a former Flight Attendant, their great love for travel comes through on every page. Attractive cover with a definite lazy tropical appeal. (...)
A highly practical guide to packing like a pro.......2004-01-17
Travel Wisdom: Tips, Tools, And Tactics For All Travelers is a highly practical guide to packing like a pro, managing travel money, shopping smart, bargaining for goods and services, dealing with setbacks, enjoying traveling with a group or going solo, creating travel lasting memories, and so much more. Collaboratively written by Lynne and Hank Christen for anyone who needs to prepare for a long journey, Travel Wisdom offers no-nonsense health, safety, and financial advice and is enthusiastically recommended for those about to travel the country or around the world for business, pleasure, or both.
A Necessity If You're Only Going To The Mall!.......2004-01-03
The authors have packaged checklists and practical advice that simply is not available anywhere else. As a writer and frequent traveler I found this book essential for the experienced globetrotter and a revelation for those who are novices. Anyone will find fresh and instantly usable info on planning, packing, shopping, and savoring their trip. Can't recommend it highly enough!

Book Description
The life of Janice Dickinson is a story of extremes: uncontrolled energy, mad self-confidence and crushing insecurity, a boundless appetite for life and a ceaseless drive to self-destruct. During the 1970s she was the first lush-lipped, long-stemmed, dark-eyed brunette to break through and become not just a model but a supermodel -- a term she coined for herself.
She graced major magazine covers from Vogue to Elle to Cosmopolitan, in photographs by Avedon and Irving Penn and fashions by Versace and Calvin Klein. She was voracious in everything: affairs both passionate and casual, endless partying, and a drug habit that dogged her through twenty years and three husbands. She spent her glory days with Gia Carangi and Christie Brinkley and her nights with Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, and Sylvester Stallone. And wherever she went, Janice captured the imagination of everyone who encountered her.
Yet the tale Janice Dickinson has lived to tell is no mere diva cartoon. For the haunting undercurrent in her life is a violent dance of cruelty and abuse with her own father -- a story she tells here for the first time. And as she careens from runway to rehab to rock bottom to recovery, readers will be captivated by her tale of survival . . . and by its cautionary power for anyone who still believes that fashion -- or life -- is an easy business.
Customer Reviews:
Craptabulous!.......2007-08-24
So, I am a fan of crazy-gorgeous-extreme model types, because they are so much the opposite of me.
Take Janice Dickinson, for instance. Janice walks in a room, and everyone knows it. Maybe they smell her heady melange of booze, perfume, and cigarettes. It could be the obnoxiously loud string of foulness that always enters before she does. And perhaps it's because she's gorgeous and has those crazy -- as in substantially unstable -- eyes that demand attention in a Charlie Manson kind of way. I don't know. Whatever it is, I want it, as do millions of young ladies.
So I really wanted to like this book and experience a lot of "Oh no she di'int" admiration, but mostly, I was stumbling over the lackluster, disconnected writing. Does anyone believe celebrities of her caliber -- low, that is -- really write their own material? I suppose her "writing partner" is partially to blame for the poor quality, but having seen Dickinson in action (critiquing ANTM contestants and manipulating her way through the D-list dumpster that is The Surreal Life), I don't doubt for a second that she'd have creative control and final say on the content and style.
Janice does deliver some juicy bits. For example, way back when Sly Stallone was her man, Janice was regularly given mystery "vitamins" by the Rocky that, in light of recent events, may've been an early iteration of HGH. Hm. Plus there's tons of drugs and boyfriends (and girlfriends), although I could've done without the explicit descriptions of sex ham-fistedly sandwiched into random spots. (It's like she forgot she wasn't writing a Harlequin for a couple of pages.)
As in other memoirs by people who shouldn't necessarily be writing any, there's the usual childhood drama blown out of proportion. Being abused is drama enough -- why add the Lifetime Movie of the Week sentiment for fanfare? It feels a little... exploitative.
But I suppose that's the point. Dickinson made her career out of exploitation -- of her body, the camera, other people's bodies... you name it. I appreciate the candor she shows, and no-holds-barred "outing" of celeb secrets is balanced by kind words for others (for instance, Christie Brinkley is -- or at least was -- a saint). This could've been an excellent book if only she'd taken an intensive in English composition and pulled out a thesaurus. (At least it wasn't as bad as Iceberg Slim!)
Enjoyed it.......2007-06-28
I thought this book was v interesting & honest...a true look into Janice's Dickinsons life. She is a strong character & has survived a hell of a childhood - now i now why she still acts kinda crazy when you see her on tv!
Great book.......2007-06-27
This woman has balls. It is not a book written by someone who is afraid of looking bad, or offending people (I am looking at YOU Kimora Lee Simmons). Janice is one fierce b*tch. I must say she did start to get on my nerves after viewing her reality show, but if you are looking for a juicy book, get this one. You will be satisfied!
This is a woman who needs professional help!.......2007-06-13
This is truly a sick (emotionally & maybe mentally) and delusional woman.
It's amazing to me that this sewer-mouthed narcisist got as far as she did.
This book is trash!
no lifeguard on duty.......2007-05-24
this book is interesting when it talks about her life with family and friends but the rest of it is slow and boring i thought this was going to be great like her other book but its very boring and hard to keep reading,
Book Description
The Brio Girls series is written to churched teen girls ages 12-16 who read fiction. The series deals with hard and ordinary issues--just like all teens face--but does so with honesty and integrity. The catchphrase for this series is "Where real faith meets real life." With 124,000 subscribers to Brio magazine, Brio Girls is one of the most visible and successful Christian fiction series in the industry.

No Lifeguard On Duty.......2005-05-21
Tyler Jennings has always tried to be strong in his faith and in what he believes is right. But all of a sudden, "what he believes is right" is changing. Are bad R-rated movies, explicit music, and trashy friends really the way to go? Does seeing a lot of things that he shouldn't be seeing make him sophisticated? And how is he expected to witness to people, when he scarcely thinks of God, himself?
This was a really good book! It has little twists and turns that will surprise you, and an entertaining storyline to keep you interested the rest of the time. The characters are all likable, but you might find yourself getting a little bit irritated with Hannah sometimes, because she can be pretty obnoxious when she's trying to prove a point about the Bible. I recommend the "Brio Girls" series to all girls between the ages of twelve and sixteen. It teaches you how to handle certain teen issues as a Christian, and it is a well-written series that will keep you wanting more.
garbage in, garbage out.......2003-03-19
Tyler is preparing for his annual trip to California, but things aren't going to good at the beginning of this book. Tyler finds himself watching a movie that pushes the "R" rating it recieves, and it doesn't help that his trip with his pal JP makes the talk of the town by Sunday. Once the Brio girls get wind of what he did, they're on to him, but because of the trip, they don't get much of a chance to talk to him about the bad movie he watched.
But when Tyler gets to California, he finds that his cousin Chaz is no longer a practicing Christian, and Chaz encourages Tyler to think for himself, which Tyler begins to do, in an effort to appease his cousin. Then Tyler meets Angel, and the two hit it off immediatley, and Tyler finds heimself questioning his beliefs even more. While in California, Tyler goes to some concerts his aunt warns him about, and comes home with some new CD's and a new attitude towards the world. When Tyler's sister Tyra borrows his bad CD's, they both get caught, and Tyler finds himself in real trouble, especially when his sister does something bad as a result of Tyler's actions.
