5 out of 5 stars how to be a natural in the woods.......2005-08-19

Are you a single mom that wants to learn how to camp, so you can take your kids? OR maybe you want to join your friend on an upcoming trip? Whether you are a first time camper or are looking for more information, the author of this book is a seasoned veteran of the outdoors and her book will help you prepare in a fun, sensible way, not that complicated drill sergeant stuff. Starting with the basic stuff like how to pack, and more importantly WHAT to pack she covers it all. If you do not know what gear to buy, this book helps with that, but helpfully steers you away from the overpriced stuff. She teaches you how to select and set up a campsite. Also learn how to chop or gather wood and make a fire, cook outdoors on a camp stove or fire. She shows you how to stay healthy and clean in the woods, how to safe from animals. What clothes and shoes to select for different climates and seasons. There is even information on how to maintain your beauty in a sensible way when in the great outdoors. She has solid advice on finding camping companions and teachers, and conquering your fears so you can be confident in the woods. Most of all she helps you to have fun, and that is what it's all about.

Overall a great book for a camper of any level experience, extremely useful for new campers. The "Basic Essentials" series are terrific little books small enough to bring with you and reference. The books are long enough to provide everything you need to know about a particular topic such as wilderness weather, first aid, outdoor cooking, or backpacking, yet short enough to keep you from reading too much extra and unnecessary stuff. An efficient 96 pages in length with very helpful illustrations. I highly recommend this and others in the series.

5 out of 5 stars Read This Book!.......2002-12-19

This is a splendid book, for any woman who loves the outdoors but has been intimidated by all the macho stereotypes, etc., or wants to try something new, whether hiking, paddling, snowshoeing... Its focus is on having fun and being comfortable with yourself as you are, not as media hype would have you think you should be. The message is that any woman can, all women probably should, get outside and play, and you don't have to be a superathlete or own every piece of fancy equipment out there to do so. Niemi's message is that as we all (like it or not) become more urban, the more we need to seek wildness, be comfortable with it -- and it's not scary or hard.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-09-16

Elaine Cunningham does a wonderful job in this book as all the other reviewers before me have surely said. And it is a little late for me to review this book i guess you can say, but I must tell you that I have gotten a late start in reading forgotten realms novels, and I have caught up and am an avid reader of these novels as well.

Back to the reciew of Silver Shadows, this book shows the quest that Arilyn undertakes independently of Danilo Thann. If you are reading this book, you have surely read Elfsong, and that is the book that describes Danilo's quest for the harpers. Elaine is a great story teller and from first point on is able to apprehend your attention and take you through Arilyn's journey of her self and for the harpers and the elves of evermeet. In addition throughout this quest, you see the maturity of Arilyn as a person since Elfshadow.

Overall Elaine Cunningham is one of my favourite authors of the realms, and this book is one of the various Forgotten Realms books i would recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Tour de force..........2007-03-26

After many boring and sometimes offensive perspectives of the Forgotten Realms, I finally come to Silver Shadows. It is one of the best fantasy tales I have ever read. Ms Cunningham has her hands on the pulse of Faerun as the story begins where her others left off. This one completely envelopes and compliments Elfsong and doesnt need to be read in sequence. The publisher like series or trilogies. This is both for marketing and in most cases, rewrites of Lord of the Rings. "There is gold in them dungeons!"

This book was the last big published effort by old TSR. A name that strikes fear and excitement in the publishing industry. Most of the time, pulp is the result. This author was the exception. While Ed Greenwood created the Forgotten Realms, he has some problems telling his stories! This is a wonderful setting with infinite possibilities. Most guest authors bring hack-saws to it. This title shines with a timeless appeal and original plot that is hard to beat.

Arilyn Moonblade was introduced in Elfshadow in 1991. Her temperment is not appealing as the story unfolds, yet her spirit makes her likeable. The adventure she undertakes is engrossing and highly imaginable. It seems to come beyond the Realms and into the very heart of the meaning of "fairy tale". Tolkien is left out of the picture, which seems to be a problem for other authors of this setting. Humor and Fun are highlights of this thrilling tale, that itself would make a great movie in the proper hands. The bad guys are loathesome and the Elves are a delight. Oh, I almost forgot a nice dragon thrown in.

Ms Cunningham has exceptional skills at creating a world that is filled with whimsy, light romance, laughter, and totally engrossing battle scenes! Now if only the rest of the authors could be this good!

      5 out of 5 stars A fine continuation of a noble series.......2006-11-10

Yet again Arylyn Moonblade is off to adventure, but this time at the behest of the Queen of Evermeet?! In this book we go from one suprise to yet another as Arylyn finds herself in trying times even as her associate (Danilo Thann) has his own adventure in the second book of the series. This really is a great book for anyone who loves stories involving elves and heroic selfless deeds. It is a good read and worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars WELL DONE Elaine Cunningham-AGAIN!!!.......2004-06-19

Arilyn Moonblade is back! The half-elf Harper finds herself involved in another adventure in the lands of Tethyr this time, tying to save Green (Wild) elves from Zhentilar deserters.
The book is so incredibly well written that the reader feels that they have been transported to another universe and are actually present among the characters, seeing what they see, feeling what they feel, sensing what they sense. Elaine Cunnigham has truly outdone herself once again and has presented us with a masterpiece of literature the likes of which we have seen only in JRR Tolkien's work, RA Salvatore's The Dark Elf and Icewind Dale trilogies and in authors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's Dragonlance Chronicles and Legends trilogies.
She has done a FANTASTIC job of keeping a balance between what is suitable to young readers and what to adults! Subtle hints such as "Omnivore" Ferret/Amulet of underwater Breathing in the Mistress Penelope's Baths and Garvanell's "payment" is exactly what many of us fans out there who are now in our 30's would like to see more of-something a bit more spicy than the usual. From the moment you pick up the book you have trouble putting it down and if that is not a clear sign of a fantastic writer/author and a great plot, I don't know what is!
Elves, Zhents, assassins, Duty, honor, bravery, magic, and swordfights are all about. A great trilogy indeed with Elfsong and Elfshadow and a "must read" along with Evermeet! One should seriously start thinking about maybe turning them into movies... DON'T MISS IT!!!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Written... Horribly Edited.......2003-08-20

This was an amazing book. Elaine Cunningham lets readers into Arilyn's complicated mind and the strange powers of the Moonblade become more apparent and it's demands worsen upon it's half-elven bearer. I enjoyed every page of this book, the plot, characters and setting were masterfully put on paper but...
You might wonder why I only gave 4 stars when this book's plot and characters are obviously 5-star material. While Elaine did an amazing job for this book whoever edited it did not. I am no english grammar whiz but still there were obvious mistakes that should never have been printed. For example, on one page a halflings name is Sandusk and on the next it is Suldusk. Also, the land which this tale takes place in is named Tethyr, it says so in the map in the front of the book but throughout the pages it is misspelled, one sentance it is Tethyr and on the next line (really!) it's spelled Tethir. I know these are just annoyances but that's it!
I enjoyed the premise and style of this book, I love the way Elaine Cunningham writes but I was thoroughly annoyed by the editorial mistakes.
      A 5 star book
      A 3 star editing job
Please overlook the bad editors and read what Elaine Cunningham is saying, it's a wonderful book, please read.

      Book Description

In the summer of 1955, Madison Lee "Bobo" Murphy was a waiter at the Catskills' Pine Hill Inn. A rural Southerner, he had never heard the word meshugge until Avrum Feldman -- a retired New York City furrier -- became his unlikely friend. For Bobo, nothing about that special time and place ever lost its glow: Avrum's obsession with the haunting voice of a famous opera diva, music that no one else could hear; the exotic mingling of Yiddish and German in the dining room; and the girl he met and loved.

In everyone's life, Avrum claimed, there is one grand, undeniable moment that never stops mattering. For Bobo, it was his first glimpse of beautiful Amy Lourie. But, for a wealthy Jewish girl and a Georgia farm boy, the summer had to end, leaving Bobo with the pain of lost love. Nearly forty years later, his children grown and marriage comfortably routine, Bobo comes north once more; there, amidst the haunting hints of Amy's presence, she unexpectedly appears. Nothing has dimmed the passion of their youth, yet two lifetimes and a thousand Catskills sunsets stand between who they were and who they have become. The barriers between them are different now. But mysteriously, miraculously, Bobo reawakens the dream of a love larger than himself....

5 out of 5 stars Makes you hear the voice of the music.......2004-07-13

Terry Kay has the ability to make you hear the music of an old dreamer, and make it your own. He can also make you believe in ghosts, and makes you want to welcome them home. Though briefly told, this story encompasses most of our century: from an opera house in 1918, to young love in 1955, and then on to matured love in 1993. I first heard of this book at a Terry Kay book-signing last fall, where I had him sign The Runaway, his latest, and To Dance with the White Dog, his best known. In the long line of waiting admirers (it took me three hours), some of them kept saying that Shadow Song was their favorite book by Kay. Strangely, they would close their eyes, as though they were listening to something. Now that I've finished the book, I understand. I also recommend to anyone planning to read this book that they acquire a recording of the "Ombra leggiera" (Shadow Song) from Giacomo Meyerbeer's "Dinorah" and listen to it before they begin reading. And then listen to it again WHILE reading the final scene. It is a remarkable experience. My CD version features the great Maria Callas. However, to make the experience authentic, I may look for a recording by Amelita Galli-Curci. I know that that old Jew, Avrum Feldman, would have it no other way. Come to think of it, I might even pick up a couple of candlesticks and pull out an old picture of a long-lost love. That would really make him happy. I can hear him now, urging from his bench, "Go, Go."

4 out of 5 stars Life imitates art, imitates life........2003-04-10

A beautifully written novel of young love revisited. Terry Kay is a gifted writer, with an uncanny ability to deliver this remarkable tale right to your heart. Bobo and Amy...I feel like I know them personally.

4 out of 5 stars Loving and beautiful story about love.......2002-10-11

I really enjoyed the book, at first it was a little confusing and hard to understand, but as the pages started turning I fell in love with the book. The whole idea that Bobo and Amy Lourie met and fell in love in the Catskills with so many things against them intrigues me. His friendship with Avrum was weird but made the story more interesting. My favorite part of the book was when Amy and Bobo meet each other 40 years later and still are in love. This is my 1st Terry Kay book and I loved it, I hope to read another one of his books soon.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic novel rises above nostalgia.......2002-06-13

I was initially drawn to this book because it takes place in a region close to my own, the Catskills of upstate New York. Indeed, location plays a large role in this compelling story of love lost and possibly found many years later. Terry Kay's atmospheric novel evokes the lush scenery of this area and also the bygone days of thriving Jewish resorts. Shadow Song is about the very long (in time as well as space) journey of Bobo Murphy from the deep South to an upstate New York resort, where he falls in love with a beautiful but inaccessible Jewish girl named Amy Lourie. He also befriends an eccentric but wise older man named Avrum. These elements would probably not make a good film --the subtlety of the prose would be lost and all that would remain would be mushy sentimentality. This is, to be sure, a nostalgic and sentimental love story. Yet the novel manages to work anyway, most likely because the author really believes in his characters and their emotions. Nostalgia, after all, can be a part of real life. Shadow Song dives directly into this theme without flinching and makes us believe in it and care about the characters.

      5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2001-05-23

This was my 6th book by Kay and I have loved every one of them. The 7th which I tried to read and couldn't get into was The Day The Lights were Turned on or some such. It got 5 stars and Shadow only got 4. Very disappointing as it was a precious love story. Taking current characters back to their youth is a favorite technique of mine. Some of the scenes and action here were somewhat far fetched but I can overlook that and concentrate on the characters who made the book live. I hope the most negative reviewer has now read more of Mr. Kay. She should try Taking Lottie Home. I hope Kay is not through with his stories. After Eli is soo good, too.

          Book Description

Women are conspicuously absent from traditional cultural histories of South-East Europe. This book addresses that imbalance by describing the contribution of women to literary culture in the Orthodox/ Ottoman areas of Serbia and Bosnia.

The author provides a broad chronological account of this contribution, dividing the book into two main parts; the earlier period up until the eighteenth century concentrates on the projections of gender through the medium of oral tradition and the lives of a handful of educated women in medieval Serbia and the few works of literature they left. Hawkesworth also looks at the written literature produced by women, first in the mid-nineteenth century and then at the turn of the century. The second part focuses on the trials and tribulations that affected feminism and women's literature throughout the twentieth century. The author finishes by highlighting the new women's movement, 1975-1990, a great period for women in Yugoslavia which created a stimulating atmosphere for outstanding pieces of women's journalism, prose and verse, culminating in the creation of new women's studies courses in many universities.

Voices in the Shadows is the first complete literary history in relation to women's writing in South-East Europe

4 out of 5 stars More of George's Xcellent early work.......2002-08-20

Another Xcellent collection of Martin's early short stories. "This Tower of Ashes" was George's choice 4 his best short story, 1nce upon a time; U may agree with him; it's very vivid & very moving. "The Lonely Songs of Laren Door" also has that wonderful, moody, romantic atmosphere of so much of George's early work. "Men of Graywater Station" (written with Howard Waldrop) is an above-average space thriller. "Night Shift" shows the flip-side of Martin's moody/romantic visions -- it's a very gritty, down-2-earth story about working on a future loading dock, comparing spaceships 2 long-distance trucking; definitely something different 4 George; U'll like it. "For a Single Yesterday" was also a personal favorite of George's, but 4 me it just misses; it Cms dry, nothing special. "And Seven Times Never Kill Man" is a routine space adventure. A couple others R merely average, nothing 2 get Xcited about. But the best stuff here is some of George's best work.
