This book examines the application of fish community characteristics to evaluate the sustainability and biological integrity of freshwaters. Topics include perspectives on use of fish communities as environmental indicators in program development, collaboration, and partnership forming; influence of specific taxa on assessment of the IBI; regional applications for areas where the IBI had not previously been developed; and specific applications of the IBI developed for coldwater streams, inland lakes, Great Lakes, reservoirs, and tailwaters.

The SAS Survival Handbook is the Special Air Service's complete course in being prepared for any type of emergency. John 'Lofty' Wiseman presents real strategies for surviving in any type of situation, from accidents and escape procedures, including chemical and nuclear to successfully adapting to various climates (polar, tropical, desert), to identifying edible plants and creating fire. The book is extremely practical and is illustrated throughout with easy-to-understand line art and diagrams.

Good if you are not in a megalopolis.......2007-10-12
I think this book is very good for certain situations, but I feel that it does not meet the needs of most average folks in case of major catastrophy.
I would recommend Ron Foster's practical guide for all scenarios. Since he works in the field of emergency response, he has the most up to date and useful methods of urban and rural survival.
If you seriously want to learn more than "how to live off the land" short term, I would highly recommend Mr. Foster's publication, "The Rural Ranger: A Suburban Manual & Field Guide of Traps and Snares for Food and Survival".
I know how to live off the land if one can even get to such a ideal location, but hunger, thirst and the elements will wear out the millions of people trying to vacate their huge cities all at once.
This book gives one a fighting chance no matter what your skills are or where you live.
Seriously,
David Highum
Amazing survival book - Incredable - Can't stop reading it!.......2007-10-10
This book is gold. If you decide to donate money to homeless people STOP. Donate this book instead. They will be able to live forever with the helpful survival tips in this book. It sits on my coffee table and has been a talking point with everyone who sees it. It has everything in it - including 'Emergency Child Birth in the Bush'. The trapping and food sections are amazing. This book was everything and much more than I thought it would be. Easily the best few dollars I ever spent on a book. Thanks to the sling traps I have no more stray cats claiming my yard as their own! Then using this book I was able to skin, prepare and cook these cats. I was also able to discard the offal that was not nutrient dense. Note: No cats have really been caught or cooked yet - but I could if I wanted to.
SAS Survival Handbook: How to Survive in the Wild, in Any Climate, on Land or at Sea.......2007-09-27
With the new tv shows showing actual survival skills in the wild my family and I have developed a real interest in this topic. I am enjoying the book. It was written in a very easy and understandable way. I feel confident that with this book by my side that I could survive quite well in a variety of situations.
What about cabin avalanche?.......2007-09-19
I found this book to thoroughly take me through the fundamentals of survival, however, I am always thinking of some very particular situations that I could find myself in that weren't addressed.
For instance, what about the "trapped in a cabin by avalance" that we're all fearful of? I play it over and over in my head. Most likely it would be 3 or 4 of us on a weekend ski trip. I've always felt that it would be best to go ahead and turn on the others very early on in the event of an avalance instead of waiting for starvation to decimate the group.
For one, each day trapped in that cabin means that everyone will be burning calories, making themselves thinner and thinner, not leaving much of a meal if natural course is left to do the dirty work of finishing them off. Not to mention, you might be too weak for a death match days later.
Also, turning on them early will almost assuredly be unexpected, since ditching ethical behavior at first opportunity is not the norm and especially with so much food still in the fridge. You're going to need that element of surprise, b/c let's face it, when you start helicoptering that timber axe over your head, the line will clearly be drawn in the sand and its 1 versus 3 at that point. You'll need to mow them all down very quickly. Don't worry that you aren't hungry yet, as there should be plenty of snow at the windows that can be used to keep the bodies from spoiling.
But I definitely liked the informative chapter on which leaves are ok to eat and which are poisonous.
Great!.......2007-09-14
Contains just about anything you would want to know about survival. I am reading the whole thing, and it is quite interesting!

Customer Reviews:
Realistic View of Unwanted Pregnancy.......2007-06-07
Anne is seventeen and accidentally pregnant. Before this, her life had seemed to be going pretty well. Her mother was sometimes depressed and in and out of mental hospitals. Her sister Pamela was the classic dumb cheerleader type, very concerned about her looks and about getting boys to like her. Anne was very smart and involved in high school and her father lavished attention on her. She was his pride and joy, but her pregnancy disappoints him and turns off any emotions he had for her. Anne and her family don't want anyone to know she is pregnant, especially the boy she used to date and whom she thought loved her, the boy who got her pregnant.
So Anne is stuck here at a home for unwed mothers in the country. She and a bunch of other pregnant girls are living together with a housemother who takes care of them and gets them to the hospital when they go into labor. None of the girls has much contact with her family while at the home, and Anne is no exception. She receives occasional letters from her family, but they never acknowledge her pregnancy. Anne feels like she is moving father and farther away from them, and feeling closer and closer to these other girls who once seemed so strange and different from her. How will this pregnancy end up changing her life? Will Anne be able to give up the baby once she gives birth?
I liked that this book showed a pretty realistic view of pregnancy from the point of view of a girl who didn't want to be pregnant. Pregnancy wasn't romanticized or portrayed as something completely wonderful. The characters were interesting and I liked how each one helped Anne gain some insight into herself.
I didn't like the parents of any of the girls, who sent them to this place instead of supporting them and letting them stay at home. I was also horrified at the party the girls had where they were smoking and drinking. I couldn't stop worrying about the damage they could be doing to their babies.
One Wrong Choice.......2005-11-22
Don't Think Twice is about Anne, a young girl who was always good in school and never got in trouble. She was always the smart one in the family and her father was always proud of her. All she did was make one bad decision and now her life turned upside down. Anne is pregnant and living in an unwed mothers home, where she faces the difficulties of being pregnant and depressed. Anne also faces the decision of whether or not she is going to keep the baby. Anne tries to have no feeling for the baby that is growing larger in her womb everyday, but as the book moves on, deep down inside she starts to feel something for the baby. Will Anne keep her baby, or will she leave and never think twice?
I thought this was a very good book. Unfortunately, you can walk down the streets if many places and see young girls that are unwed, and pregnant. This book helped me to understand the struggles and hardships pregnant girls are going through. It talked more about the support it takes and it makes you think about every choice you make and every action you take. This book helped me see how precious and frail the human body is and to picture the affect that an unborn baby boy or girl can have on you.
I few things that I didn't like about this book were that, it seemed to take forever. I read about every night but I never seemed to finish. The book was also not very grate at looking on the bright side of things, it was a little depressing because very little were the characters in the book happy. The personalities of the characters weren't very inviting but, with the theme of the book being about pregnant girls, I can see why the characters weren't all that cheerful.
Truthful.......2005-01-30
This book was good for many reasons, one of them being it didn't overlook pregnancy. It showed that not all girls are lucky enough to keep their baby. Anne didn't take crap from anyone and knew people's personalities before she met them. She already knew who she was when she went to the home and she didn't think that the father of her baby was the most important thing in the world. She didn't enjoy the sex and she didn't even know why she was having sex, she didn't love her boyfriend and he sure as hell only wanted the sex and he ended up with a baby he doesn't even know about. When I read about Anne's sister Penny I was like "she should have been where Anne was."I guess now Penny knows what happens when she fools around with guys. Anne shows it's not a good idea to get pregnant and that anyone could because she was really smart and made one bad decision that changed her life forever.
Girl Interrupted, Maternity style.......2003-12-14
This book was excellent. I laughed out loud several times. It took me right back to 1967, what it must have been like to be a young pregnant girl back then, when everyone was so intolerant. The characters were interesting. Anne was hilarious. The end was very touching and moving. The only thing that made me nervous was when they all got drunk, but then I realized no one back then knew that alcohol will hurt an unborn baby.
This book would be a really great movie.
The cover doesn't do justice.......2003-06-01
I just havta say, the new cover for the book doesn't look very appealing and I think the cover that was on the edition I read was much better but that's besides the point.
This book was WONDERFUL. There is no judgement and it is full of honest truths. Anne at first appears to be unlikeable but once deep into the book, you feel for her very much. The different situations that the other pregnant girls went through were also very well described and written. Considering this is Ruth Pennebaker's debut novel, I am much in awe of her writing talent and look forward to reading her other novels.
Even though you've probably read other synopsises of the story, my version is: An unwed pregnant teenager is pregnant in a time when she shouldn't be: the late 60s. Abortion is still illegal and her family is in no way accepting of her predicment. She is sent to a home where girls of the same age and in the same situation are sent. The book takes us through the pregnancy months and we watch Anne's situation change and her own self grow and change.
This book is NOT sterotypical and I urge you to read it!
Book Description
This book provides an insightful companion to Dylan's 1960s recordings, tracing the people, places, and events behind some of his greatest songs and revealing his many early influences, from rock and folk music to philosophy and symbolist poetry.
Customer Reviews:
a good book.......2002-04-20
this book tells you a lot about bob dylan, a folk singer turned rock singer whose songs are really good and literary. if you want to understand his lyrics and whatnot pick up this book. it is good. i liked it though i didnt read all of it.
Invaluable reference.......2002-01-12
Bob Dylan is one of the few musical figures from the 20th century that we have truly seen become a legend in their own time. Some would argue, indeed, that Dylan is THE quissential cultural figure of the second half of the 20th century - recording undoubtedly some of the greatest albums ever put to tape, becoming, in the eyes of many, a composer for our times on par with Mozart and Beethoven, arguably the greatest, at the very least most infulential and far-reaching poet of the century, and mapping out emotional blueprints for an entire generation with songs like Blowin' In The Wind, The Times They Are A-Changin', Mr. Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, and Just Like A Woman. And, although he has since recorded albums every bit as good as his 60's highlights, - not least among them, his magnum opus Blood On The Tracks, and his 1998 Album of The Year, Time Out of Mind - his works from that time still stands as the absolute apex of a culture that was the most turbulent decade since the 20's. Rarely has an artist, at any time, been so in tune with the tenor of the times. This book chronicles Dylan's remarkable 60's period - from his, largely interpretative, debut album through his shocking move to country music with Nashville Skyline. It indeed has the "stories behind every song", and it avoids stooping so low as to try and convey what the songs are "about." Rather, this book, much more usefully, gives the background to the songs: how and when they came about, insight into the characters mentioned in them, and what woman, person, or particular muse the song may be referring to, or have been inspired by. There may not be a lot here that Dylanologist don't already know, but it is nevertheless a useful (not to mention beautiful - it's an immaculately laid-out book, with dozens of generous photographs peppered throughout), and nice to have a reference to all these early songs in one place. An absolutely essential book for Dylan fans.
How Does It Feel?.......1999-08-12
This was when Dylan was making groundbreaking music. This book offers fine analysis of every track and an excellent companion to the CDs of that time period. A must-have book for Dylan fans.

Breathtaking.......2002-12-19
This book was..amazing. I never realised I could enjoy a book so much. It was amazingly written, made me live the story rather than me just reading it. It had quite the storyline, one of those books you'll never forget. It's beyond amazing, and in my opinion there is not enough words to express how well written this book was. Great storyline, great author...amazing. Never realised a book could capture me in such a way as Alison Lohans has done with this particular book.
an experience.......2002-11-07
This is my favorite book of all time and I'm saddened to see that it is out of print. It is about three things that meant a lot to me, how to be a mother, how to be a daughter and how to live in the shadow of the Vietnam war....
Its a book about lifes experiences, and lifes experiences in the 60's are all that much more compelling

The North Lakes region of Minnesota is a place of breathtaking beauty--where thousands of small islands and lakes stretch as far as the eye can see. In his haunting second novel, Don't Think Twice, Wayne Johnson brilliantly evokes a sense of place--where people definitely do not have the upper hand. "On quiet mornings, a light mist rises off the water. There is something new about it all. Life here has just a toehold on these glacier-scarred basalt and granite islands." Johnson grew up on the White Earth and Red Lake reservations, and his novel tells the powerful story of one man's struggle to keep his land, and his dignity.
Paul Two Persons owns a resort lodge that sits on 1,400 acres of land, close by the reservation where he was born. But beyond the idyllic location, all is not well. Several months earlier, Paul's young son, Bobby, had died in a hunting accident; his marriage is shaky; and he's on the verge of losing the lodge thanks to a bad loan to his friend, Al. People have stopped talking to him because "getting too close meant trouble. Tchibai, the old ones called it, or walking shadow." Adding to his woes, Al dies in an apparent suicide. Paul quickly realizes that his troubles are not just fate: they are being deliberately orchestrated, and someone is pulling his strings.
Don't Think Twice is a remarkable literary thriller that eloquently portrays the torment of one man as he battles with various demons. The book leaves us breathless--and needing more of Johnson's magic. --Naomi Gesinger
Book Description
Deep in the north woods of Minnesota, Paul Two Persons is struggling to keep his resort lodge afloat. He has lent money to his childhood friend, Al, and needs it back fast before the bank forecloses on his business.
When Al turns up missing -- and then dead of an apparent suicide -- Paul is propelled into a labyrinth of intrigue that leads to some ugly discoveries. There is corruption within his own Tribal Council, developers' plans for the land that Paul has fought so hard to keep, and the "accidental death" of his eight-year-old son that now seems something more sinister.
Haunted by these demons, growing increasingly distant from his grieving wife, and facing the very real threat of losing his livelihood, Paul feels he has become what the Chippewa call a tchibai -- a walking shadow. Attempts are made on his life, the lodge is nearly burned to the ground, and people on the reservation behave oddly in his presence.
The escalating circumstances of one summer -- and Paul's determination to survive them -- reveal the indomitable spirit that is his Chippewa heritage. Set in the breathtaking landscape of northwestern Minnesota, Don't Think Twice is a haunting and memorable story about a man's struggle when pushed to the edge.
Customer Reviews:
Why did Amazon kill me?.......2004-08-16
My earlier very positive review of this book ("Great characters, compelling suspense, brilliant ecofiction") was correctly attributed to jrdwyer@csuchico.edu, but now it's merely by "a reader." Here I've written hundreds of reviews for Library Journal, been named LJ reviewer of the year, and am writing my second book about environmental literature, but for some reason Amazon has emasculated me into "a reader." Hey, Amazon, I like tomgirls. You've made money selling my first book (Earth Works) and will make more of the seond one (Where the Wild Books Are)What did I do to get bumped off by you? No, I don't suspect this "review" will be helpful to readers, but my books are!
Awesome Crime Fiction.......2004-01-19
The two negatives: 1) the book takes about 60 pages to get up to the suspense level where it's impossible to put down, and 2)it's not overly idiot-friendly. Both of these drawbacks are negligible when you consider that it provides an awesome plot in an unforgettable and palpable world -- one you've probably never seen before. And for the first time since JD Carr, a mystery writer is crediting the audience with the kind of intelligence that draws them to mysteries in the first place. On top of that, it moves like a locomotive. You want stupid, read John Sandford's "Prey" novels. You want a spooky, gripping read that will make you feel like you've lived through something intense, try Wayne Johnson.
disjointed, sometimes, infuriating, others, good, bad?.......2001-02-14
Wayne Johnson, author, tight pants, black hair, tough talker. I don't know, something about it bothered me, too much description, maybe, or was it that the descriptions all came in the form of lists, filled with commas, and really amounted to very little, not ,much?
HIDE THE BALL? It's true that in a mystery the author is always keeping a great deal from the reader, it's the nature of the beast. In most mysteries however, whether first person or third, the protagonist is in the dark as well. In this case the narrator, Peter Two Persons (god, is this spelled out for or what?) knows so much more than he's telling, that one gets the feeling not only of being in the dark, but of being teased. Johnson is playing a game with the reader, and I find it infuriating.
It's a shame, because I think if he had not worked so hard at being so lyrical , and had been a little more honest with his readers, Johnson would have had a really wonderful book here.
By the way, has anybody ever looked at somebody's eyes and seen "Blue with flecks of white" in them?
Don't Think Twice.......2000-03-13
It's 12:12 a.m. and I just had to stay up and finish this book tonight. Like the main character, I was often unsure what was going on exactly, and couldn't tell the good guys from the bad, and as that is often the case in real life, I totally identified with him even though I am a woman.
I loved the lyrical quality of the writing, stopping often to reread sentences and entire passages, admiring how sharply Wayne Johnson captured a scene in a few phrases or sentences.
The writing style and the story are perfectly matched. The characters could be someone you know.
I loved it.
Don't Think Twice.......2000-02-19
First book I've ever read that I could not guess what was going to happen next. Written from the viewpoint of a Native American fighting to keep from losing the most important things in his life-his marriage and his land. A lone man fighting greedy businessmen and his own people, who view him as a traitor, to save his resort and his marriage. Not knowing if he can even trust his best friend, he sets on a path to save what he loves most and risks it all in doing so. I loved it, my mother loved it and by brother is reading it now. I was fortunate enough to have met the author's wife in a small book store and was able to get the book autographed. She also told me it was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. Here's hoping the book gets the attention it so greatly deserves. Anxiously awaiting the sequel due out in June, "Six Crooked Highways."

Description:
In bimanual coordination when moving the hands to two separate objects, subjects tend to initiate and terminate the movements together, even when the targets are at different distances or are of a different size. Additionally, each hand tends to scale its grasp independently to the object to be grasped. Here, we report the performance of a patient, who had previously shown signs of motor neglect, on two experiments investigating coupling and independence in bimanual coordination. The patient showed relatively normal bimanual behaviour for the transport phase of prehension when objects were placed at different distances (Experiment 1), but abnormal behaviour for the grasp component when objects were of different sizes (Experiment 2). Moreover, the contralesional limb demonstrated a dependency of grasp that was related to the object grasped by the ipsilesional limb. We discuss the possible underlying mechanisms of this dependency in relation to competitive motor programming and attentional bias. The results also reinforce the view that the transport and grasp components of prehension are distinct processes.
