Book Description
"To me, it has as much strength and message . . . as Leopold's
A Sand County Almanac or Thoreau's
Walden."
from the Introduction by Rick Bass
"A Texan wholly devoted to his native Southwest, he was regional but not provincial.... Roy Bedichek was a true scientist, with a luminous curiosity more like the ancient Greeks' than today's."
Audubon
"You may not know the little birds from the little flowers and not even care to, but still you will find in
Adventures with a Texas Naturalist a ripe mind seeing in all relationships the human significance.... His prose is modest and seemingly without art. And then you discover that this man who paid profound attention to everything writes like an angel."
Lon Tinkle
"I wish some such book opening windows on the ground I belong to and arousing healthy curiosity about all things both great and small had been available when I, as a boy, always got booksgood booksfor Christmas. It is the kind of book that enlarges experience whether remembered or yet to come. It is a book to open eyes."
J. Frank Dobie
". . . Texas cannot really be known without reading
Adventures with a Texas Naturalist."
A. C. Greene,
The 50 Best Books on Texas
A classic since its first publication in 1947,
Adventures with a Texas Naturalist distills a lifetime of patient observations of the natural world. This reprint contains a new introduction by noted nature writer Rick Bass.
Customer Reviews:
Glad I read it!.......2003-12-01
In my Texas History class we had to pick from a list of books about the state. I chose this one pretty much at random, but as the title of this review suggests I'm glad I did! Though published in 1947, this book is a must for anyone interested in the plants or wildlife in Texas, especially birds. Even if you're not interested, check it out anyway, I guarantee the author will turn you into a wannabe naturalist before you get halfway through it :)
Another nice thing is Bedichek's obvious concern about the dangers of habitat destruction and overhunting at a time well before the subject became "popular"...and my little review here doesn't do the book justice, you can tell by reading it that the author was in love with nature; the description and imagery is amazing, almost lyrical at times. The copy I read was from the library, but now I'll have to buy one of my own. I suggest you get one too, trust me, you won't regret it :)

Full of errors.......2001-05-10
I've been a travel agent and travel agency owner for more than a decade, and so started reading this book with a great deal of interest.
I hadn't even finished the first page before I fell off my chair with astonishment at the errors the author was perpetrating - 'a consolidation ticket is normally valid for a year and fully flexible'. This is completely wrong - consolidated/discounted tickets are always highly restricted.
I read on to page two. And major mistake two. 'A good travel agent can often save you more by exploiting IATA fare construction rules allowing you to fly up to 25% more miles between two points either free or for a small surcharge'. Again, dead wrong.
In more than ten years as a travel agent, I have never ever issued a single mileage based fare (such as the author advocates in the preceding paragraph). These days, with most fares being 'route based' rather than 'mileage based' it is exceeding rare to find such fares at good values.
Other parts of the book (which claims a 2000 publication date) are curiously out of date, probably because they have been culled from the author's newspaper columns over many years - for example, 'wait for the new generation of featherweight PCN digital mobiles, allowing people to call you wherever you are.' Excuse me, but featherweight (whatever that means) digital phones have been out there for quite a few years already....
All in all, an extremely disappointing book, full of errors and light on real value. If you're looking for a book like this, I'd recommend either the currently out of print 'Airline Passenger's Guerrilla Handbook' by George Brown or 'Fly cheap!' by Kelly Monaghan.
A Must Read for Women Travelers.......2000-08-26
If you are a woman traveling alone, do not leave home without the tips Collis offers along with all the other DOS and DONTS. You'll be shocked at all the do's you don't do, and all the don'ts you do. Learn where and what not to eat for happy travel. Look at hotels other women have chosen and get tips for safety, security and peace. Really.
A great plane read!

Book Description
Don't Tell A Soul...
In a remote, heavily wooded area near the Berkshires of Massachusetts, Rachel Lorant died on her birthday. But she didn't die alone. That night, her four sorority sisters make a solemn, trembling pledge. They will never reveal what has just happened in those woods--ever. Instead, they will take their terrible secret to their graves...
Don't Think About The Past...
Now, ten years later, their secret is coming back to haunt them as each receives a card in the mail from Rachel: "Happy Birthday to Me. xoxo R." It's clear that someone knows what happened that night. Someone is stalking them and sending mysterious, chilling gifts that only they can understand--deadly warnings of what is to come. For the sins of the past have come back with a vengeance, and a killer will see that they all pay in blood...
And Whatever You Do--Don't Scream...
Brynn Costello has never felt such pure fear. She didn't want any part in what happened so long ago, but now, the mother of two will do anything to stay alive and protect her family--even if it means matching wits with a killer she can't see...a twisted psychopath who is closer than she thinks and who is saving her death for last...
Customer Reviews:
Deadly Secret of Sorority Sisters.......2007-08-24
Four sorority sisters with nothing in common except birthdays in October and a pact to keep secret the accidental death and disappearance of a fifth sister. Unbeknown to each other, each sister also have secret lovers/affairs, which if revealed would have ripped this sisterhood apart. Amusing and mildly entertaining.
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2007-07-23
This is the first book I have read by this author. I couldn't put it down! I was riveted till the end and did not figure out who the murderer was until the very end. I will definitely read more by this author in the future. 476 pages and I read it in 3 days! I absolutely recommend this book...don't pass it up!!!
Never read Wendy Corsi Staub before.......2007-07-10
I had never heard of Wendy Corsi Staub before. I tend to stick with the same authors over and over. I'm an avid James Patterson fan and read Mary Higgins Clark and Janet Evanovich quite regularly. While I was looking at books in the pharmacy, someone told me to purchase this one - that it was really good. I bought it, but was reluctant to jump into it- since I didn't know the author. Now that I've read it, it was wonderful. I wish I had read it earlier! It is a very long book, but it flows well and the characters are well developed. I will be purchasing another Wendy Corsi Staub book today! I hope it is just as good.
BTW, this is a story set in a sorority past, but I don't think you need to know or feel anything about sororities to enjoy the book. It is just a plain good book!
This book made me want to SCREAM........2007-07-09
Without seeing any reviews of this book on this site, I knew that most of the female reviewers would have been glued to this novel from page one. There are guys like myself out here that do enjoy reading romance and "damsels in distress" novels and authors and publishers should be aware of this. However, in regards to this book this seems to have been written solely for women to read. My only wish is that the characters, along with the book, fall into the gapping maw of an erupting volcano.
Awesome book!!!.......2007-07-05
Wendy Corsi Staub is very quickly moving to the top of my "favorite author" list!!!! This book was absolutely awesome. I was glued to it from the first page!

Don't Scream.......2007-03-29
I recommend this book for people who like mysteries. In this book you will read a problem that is happening and then you'll want to find out the solution right away. I learned that you can't always trust everyone in the world, they could be dangerous. I could connect to the character because I've had friends who have stabbed me in the back. Only kids who like mysteries may enjoy this book because this book is about a girl who is stuck between two guys and she doesn't know whom to trust.
I hope my review is helpful to you!.......2006-09-19
Don't Scream
If you like a book with some suspense then you would love this book. It is really great book. Although I found it to be a little sad in some parts I agreed that there needs to be some drama to make a book worth reading. The book was about a girl named Jessica and how she reacts when two new kids come to town. She grows suspicious of Scott and Mark. Like were they come from, what they have done to get here, and other personal stuff about them. When she finds out something bad about them; she fears that her life and her friends and family's life might be in danger, too.
My favorite guy character was Eric because he was a real sweetheart and he was very heroic. My favorite girl character was Lori because she would tell it like it is and she was also very caring.
One of the reasons I kind of disliked the book is that it foreshadowed a little too much. I sometimes felt that I knew what was coming up next but the ending surprised me so much.
I could relate to the book because they were in school and they had some of the same things that happen at my school. I think this is a good book for teenagers, but I don't recommend it for adults though.
Don't scream.......2005-09-29
Have you ever realy liked someone and later, there something strang about them ,or what about agood mystery book,if yes you would like this book .it has a edgy filling to it. the kind that you don't know who to trust.
Jess and her bestfreind lori just started school again. Jess thinks that this school year is going to be good ,because of the two new boys that just started school. later own she finds out that one of the boys are given a new identity by the federal witness protection program. but the other boy is wanting to get revenge.

It's been a whole year.......2004-07-28
It's been a whole year since the tragic death of Joan Lowery Nixon, and thinking about her many gifts as an author, I miss her today, as the stack of manuscripts she finished but didn't live to see published dwindles down. She won the Edgar Award an incredible four times, but her greatest happiness came from the letters and reviews her readers gave her, for there are many readers whose favorite writer will always be Joan Lowery Nixon.
DON'T SCREAM is a good one by her, although most of her books are good even if she did turn them out at a rate of up to 8 a year. In DON'T SCREAM, the action turns on one ordianry gir;'s suspicions that one of two new boys in town is secretly evil, and Joan ratchets up the suspense so we never know which one it is. Every time you think it's one, she weakens your suspicion by making the other one act in an ambiguous way. It's a seesaw ride of brilliant suspense, and the heroine, Jessica, reacts to this unusual situation just as many another small town girl would do, she keeps her doubts to herself, failing to confide in authority until it's almost too late.
It's set in Texas, so there are a lot of regionalisms, for this is an area that Joan knew well, and loved.
It's been a year now, and oh, how bitter the loss! But the books live on to comfort us in your demise.
Untitled.......2003-10-09
This was a very good book. The author did a very good job in describing the characters. I especially liked the way she described Mark. Mark is a psycho that moves in next door to Jess. This book will keep you on your toes. I couldn't put this book down. If you like murder mysteries than this is a good book for you. If you are a cat lover than this book will make you cry.

Save your money for something better.......2003-10-03
I have read many books, but this one was not my favorite. I drededly read 100 pages, than put it down. I couldn't bare to read any more. All of the other books in this series are great, but i would save your money, and not buy this one.
SCREAM!.......2002-06-22
Dawson was too low and depressing in this one, I really wish these books would move away from the whole Dawson-Joey thing cos it gets boring and irritating, much like Patrice in this story. Although there were some funny lines, there needed to be more light hearted moments as the book gave off a sad vibe the entire time. It was rather predictable, but the story moved along nicely. If your a fan of DC youll probably enjoy it, although I would recoment "Major Meltdown" or "shifting In To Overdrive" first.
Save your money!!.......2001-08-29
I have read all of the books in the series and love them all except this one. All of the others grab you from the start and don't let go till the end. This one, however, being the exception. It was slow moving and dull and I would strongly suggest buying it used or just going to a book store and plopping in a couch for awhile to read it to save your money. The best one out of the series in my opinion is "Calm Before the Storm."
Good... but not the Best!.......2000-07-13
I've read all the Dawsons Creek Book, and this one just doesn't do it for me! IT was good... thats why i give it 4 stars! But i like how Pacey & Joey are together now... and this one... they werent haha! Well...Joey & Jen find a little love in here... and so does Dawson.. a little! RECOMMEND if Dawsons Creek fan!
Not Bad, Creek fans should enjoy.......1999-12-24
I enjoyed reading yet another book in the Dawson's Creek series. This book keeps the characters true to who they are on the TV show. I think this book overplays the Dawson/Joey relationship a little too much. I was hoping for a better plot...maybe adding a little more about the horror movie into it. Nonetheless, if you enjoy watching Dawson's Creek, you will surley enjoy this book.
