Description:
An assessment has been carried out to determine the impact of continued ^9^9Tc discharges into the Irish Sea from the nuclear fuels reprocessing plant at Sellafield. Samples of surface and bottom seawater and sediment have been collected from the Irish Sea and analysed for ^9^9Tc. The information has been used, together with supporting data, to determine the effect of summer stratification upon the seawater concentrations and to evaluate whether sediments provide a sink for ^9^9Tc. Hydrographic data provide clear evidence of thermal stratification of waters above the muddy sediment in the western Irish Sea. Surface water contained higher ^9^9Tc concentrations than bottom water, and concentrations were inversely related to water salinity. This inverse relationship was not observed in the eastern Irish Sea close to Sellafield. ^9^9Tc activities in surficial sediments were greatest (>20 Bq/kg) at sites closest to the Cumbrian coastline. Activity, from equivalent sampling sites, remained similar between surveys carried out in 1995 and 1998. The muted response of the seabed sediments, to fluctuations in the Sellafield discharges, compared with the water column is to be expected given that they reflect the integrated radionuclide discharge history.

Description:
Levels of radioactive contaminants in various Greenland environments have been assessed during 1999-2001. The source of ^1^3^7Cs, ^9^0Sr and ^2^3^9^,^2^4^0Pu in terrestrial and fresh water environments is mainly global fallout. In addition, the Chernobyl accident gave a small contribution of ^1^3^7Cs. Reindeer and lamb contain the largest observed ^1^3^7Cs concentrations in the terrestrial environment-up to 80 Bq kg^-^1 fresh weight have been observed in reindeer. Due to special environmental conditions, ^1^3^7Cs is transferred to landlocked Arctic char with extremely high efficiency in South Greenland leading to concentrations up to 100 Bq kg^-^1 fresh weight. In these cases very long ecological half-lives are seen. Concentrations of ^9^9Tc, ^1^3^7Cs and ^9^0Sr in seawater and in marine biota decrease in the order North-East Greenland and the coastal East Greenland current>South-West Greenland>Central West Greenland and North-West Greenland>Irmiger Sea~Faroe Islands. The general large-scale oceanic circulation combined with European coastal discharges and previous contamination of the Arctic Ocean causes this. As the same tendency is seen for the persistent organic pollutants (POPs) DDT and PCB in marine biota, it is suggested that long-distance oceanic transport by coastal currents is a significant pathway also for POPs in the Greenland marine environment. The peak ^9^9Tc discharge from Sellafield 1994-1995 has only been slightly visible in the present survey year 2000. The concentrations are expected to increase in the future, especially in East Greenland. The Bylot Sound at the Thule Airbase (Pituffik) in North-West Greenland was contaminated with plutonium and enriched uranium in a weapons accident in 1968. Biological activity has mixed accident plutonium efficiently into the new sediments resulting in continued high surface sediment concentrations three decades after the accident. Transfer of plutonium to benthic biota is low-and lower than observed in the Irish Sea. This is supposed to be caused by the physico-chemical form of the accident plutonium. A recent study indicates that 'hot particles' hold considerably more plutonium than previously anticipated and that the Bylot Sound sediments may account for the major part of the un-recovered plutonium after the accident, i.e. approximately 3 kg.

Description:
Radioactive technetium-99 forms during nuclear fission and has been found as a contaminant at sites where nuclear wastes have been processed or stored. Here we describe results from microcosm experiments containing soil samples representative of the UKAEA site at Dounreay to examine the effect of varying solution chemistry on the fate of technetium during microbial reduction. Analysis of a suite of stable element redox indicators demonstrated that microbial activity occurred in a range of microcosm experiments including unamended Dounreay sediments, carbonate buffered sediments, and microcosms amended with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) a complexing ligand used in nuclear fuel cycle operations. During the development of anoxia mediated by indigenous microbial populations, TcO"4^- was removed from solution in experiments. In all cases, the removal of TcO"4^- from solution occurred during active microbial Fe(III)-reduction when Fe(II) was growing into the microcosms. Tc removal was most likely via reduction of TcO"4^- to poorly soluble Tc(IV) which is retained on the sediments. The potential stability of Tc associated with the soil to remobilisation via complexation with EDTA was examined as reduced Tc-labelled sediments were contacted with a de-oxygenated EDTA solution. No remobilisation of Tc(IV) in the presence of EDTA was observed.

Description:
Monitoring of the marine environment for radioactivity, for both radiological protection and oceanographic purposes, remains an expensive and labour intensive activity due to the large sample volumes needed and the complex and lengthy analytical procedures required to measure low levels of contamination. Because of this, some consideration must be given to the design of sampling plans to ensure effective and efficient sampling that can be defended on the basis of scientific rationale. This article tests the hypothesis that geostatistical techniques may prove of use in the optimisation and design of sampling regimes for the monitoring of temporal fluctuations in the levels of technetium at a location in the Norwegian Arctic marine environment. The level of temporal correlation exhibited by two relevant time series was investigated and the information used to observe the effect of sampling frequency on the production of monthly estimates of activity of technetium in both seawater and seaweed. The results indicate that reduced sampling frequency allows production of estimates that acceptably replicate the actual data and that use of geostatistical procedures may offer advantages in the planning of monitoring systems for marine radioactivity. The use of an oceanographic model was also investigated as a means of assessing the temporal correlation prior to actual sampling, an approach that may offer significant advantages by reducing the need to have lengthy time series prior to designing sampling regimes.

Kauai revisited.......2007-09-21
I have been to Kauai several times. The information in this guide led us to some places on the island we had not been to on our prior visits. The book has excellent suggestions on which beaches are safer than others. We did not try the hikes however.
Kauai on a budget.......2007-08-01
We own all their other Hawaiian books and buy them because we go there to experience the astounding beauty and perfect climate. It's a real getaway, a peaceful place.
The trail descriptions incorporating the history, the level of difficulty and landmarks makes this one of the best resources on the market. Oh and there are photos so you know where you're going. And it doesn't break the bank, the four of us stayed in a time share and ate in. The listings in the book just require energy and time which we had plenty of. There were no fees attached to any of the activities. We found all the descriptions very accurate and will stick with these Hawaii specialists for subsequent visits.
Knowing where to go.......2007-06-26
We spent all our time in the Kauai sun and very little time at the Marriott. So much to do. The trailblazer lured us to all sorts of out of the way places. Our copy ended up with all kinds of check marks in the margins and never ceased to amaze us with listings. For water sports, it's gotta be one of the best references available. We did some ocean kayaking and took ten of the hikes, our most favorite being along the Kalalau Trail. We're switching from Mexico to Hawaii now for our vacations, it was more exotic and the beaches way more beautiful. We have their Maui book and now want to see the Big Island - Trailblazer style.
Great book!.......2007-06-05
I got this book before traveling to Kauai. I wish I had taken it with me when I went, but I forgot to pack it. It has lots of great information and you will want to have it with you to find secret spots for surfing, snorkeling, etc.
Recommend it!.......2007-05-04
We feel lucky we chose to go to Kauai. We were considering moving there and wanted a guide that could give us a quick and easy entry into what the island had to offer a tourist and potential resident. We got what we paid for and more since inside there are alot of tips inside that you need to know. The maps were perfect for us with relevant data for each section, well integrated with the text and we liked the generous variety of photographs. Kauai felt small enough with a wonderful sense of community. The deserted beaches and greenery made a very positive impression.
This book is a real standout. We got to see more than just the surface.

David Leavitt's reputation has rested upon stories and novels that explicate a sedate, upper-middle class world of reserved emotions and sexuality. In his new collection of three novellas
Arkansas, he explores new territory. Droll, surprising, and very sexy, these works often shock and startle the reader. In "The Term Paper Artist," a writer named David Leavitt writes school papers for cute undergraduates in exchange for sexual favors, and in "Saturn Street." a gay man who delivers lunches to homebound people with AIDS falls in love with one of his clients. Beautifully written and alarmingly funny,
Arkansas is one of the best works of gay fiction in years.
Book Description
Here are three novellas of escape and exile, touching and funny and at times calculatedly outrageous. In "Saturn Street," a disaffected L.A. screenwriter delivers lunches to homebound AIDS patients, only to find himself falling in love with one of them. In "The Wooden Anniversary," Nathan and Celia - familiar characters from Leavitt's story collections - reunite after a five-year separation. And in "The Term-Paper Artist," a writer named David Leavitt, hiding out at his father's house in the aftermath of a publishing scandal, experiences literary rejuvenation when he agrees to write term papers for UCLA undergraduates in exchange for sex.
Customer Reviews:
One Very Good and Two Good Novellas.......2006-08-14
I haven't read Leavitt in awhile and had Arkansas sitting on my shelf. Arkansas is a collection of 3 stories -- each about 60-70 pages in length. Like much of Leavitt's work, while it is fiction, it gives at least to sense of being autobiographical. The main protagonist is often a stand-in for Leavitt himself.
The strongest story of the 3 is the first one, "The Term Paper Artist" which deals with a 'David Leavitt' who, in a slow spot in his own writing, winds up writing term papers in exchange for sex for several undergraduates. In contrast to the one review below this is far from erotica or pornography -- sex is part of the story as it is in many works, but this tale is far from erotica.
In "The Wooden Anniversary" Nathan and Celia -- two characters from Leavitt's earlier works -- reunite in Tuscany after a 5 year absence. This story was in my opinion the weakest of the 3. It was enoyable and a good read, but as times seemed a bit lurching, especially near the ending.
Finally in "Saturn Street" a writer in LA winds up delivering meals on wheels for an AIDS service (this is set in the mid-to-late 90's so one must take into account the shorter life span of HIV+ people even 10 years ago) Through the delivery service, the writer Jerry becomes close to one of the patients Phil, and that relationship (though it doesn't really proceed to that level) enables Jerry to see what's been missing in his life.
I would give the Term Paper Artist an A, Saturn Street an A-/B+, and The Wooden Anniversary a B-. An overall 4 star rating. If you are a fan of Leavitt, or gay short fiction in general, you won't be disappointed.
Check it out. Why not?.......2006-08-06
All three of these stories are excellently written. I don't even know where I got this book, it was just on my shelf. So, this is the first Leavitt that I've read, and I really like his style. He writes in a nonfictional/fictional way about his own life. The Term Paper Artist and Saturn Street make you feel like you are reading his diary or some other secret revealing documents. He's very open about very personal things that you don't usually read about, which makes reading the stories kind of a guilty pleasure, akin to reading a tabloid.
I'd definitely recommend the book to anyone who just enjoys reading as he has a pretty masterful grasp on writing. And his writing style is very honest, you'll feel like you really know who David Leavitt is.
What's the problem?.......2006-03-27
I find it hard to believe that so many people trash this book, and always go back to the Family Dancing argument. I've read all of Mr. Leavitt's works-- more than once. While I agree this is not his best, it is very good, and I commend Mr. Leavitt for stepping outside of what people expect from him.
I think The Term Paper Artist is a fantastic story. Using gay sex does not make something pornographic, nor was the sex in the story gratuituous. The sex had a purpose, it served its purpose, it drove the story and worked well with cadence and language. I also commend Mr. Leavitt for having somewhat of a meta-fiction moment, and I think he pulled it off quite well.
Having said that, I have a big problem with militant queers who take the high road, thinking they know what a community should be and should represent, especially when dealing with the arts. Not everything has to be so didactic. Fiction is fiction and you can do anything you want with it.
I look for two things when reading fiction. Does the author know how to write a sentence or paragraph? Was the story or novel good enough to actually finish reading, and did it evoke an emotional response?
Yes and Yes.
This man is teaching our children!.......2002-10-30
So, the man who in this book writes about a man who writes A level term papers for failing college students ("The Term-Paper Artist"), and so convincingly I *have* to give him a star for it, is now teaching at the University of Florida and is up for Tenure. How about that.
Not Leavitt's best day.......2002-06-03
The first story here, "The Term Paper Artist," is little more than a piece of gay erotica. "The Wooden Anniversary" is a return to hold characters and is written in a very wooden manner. "Saturn Street," is a good story, but unusual to Leavitt, the writing falls flat. Give him time; this is Leavitt's return after a slump inspired by a lawsuit (which you'll get a pretty good idea about upon reading "The Term Paper Artist." Pass.

Monk's Hood - Third Chronicle of Brother Cadfael.......2007-02-09
I love these books! Especially good for herb lovers.
Great Development in an Interesting Story.......2006-02-01
Now that I've finished Monk's Hood, I have found a new appreciation for Ellis Peters' work. After one death too many, I was expecting a rather static setting that would seem to change, but in truth, it would really change from book to book. I am definitely the product of watching too many American sitcoms and am glad my expectation was not met.
The story begins with Father Abbot Heribert leaving Shrewsbury to a council being held to reassess the leadership of the Church in England. He believes is going to be replaced so he leaves any legal matters unsigned so the new Abbot could determine the course of things once appointed. In the meantime, the Bonel household was going to cede its holdings to the abbey in exchange for a quiet retirement. The contract was left unsigned by the Abbot and shortly after Gervase Bonel, the head of the household, was murdered by way of poison, a medicine called Monk's Hook made by Cadfael himself.
The book is filled with a wonderful assortment of characters. None of which are good or bad. They have their own strengths, aspirations and failings. Once of things I enjoy about the Cadfael stories is he passes very little judgment against others (Brother Jerome and Prior Robert being exceptions). We have a new assistant - Brother Mark, his former fiancé - Richaldis, the return of Hugh Beringer, not to mention a number others. Even the murderer in the end is a many Cadfael felt sympathy for and helps. Yes, there is a sense of right and wrong in these books, but the means to right are often rather unorthodox and thus enjoyable.
I would recommend this book to anyone continuing to read the stories of Cadfael. They would appeal to a mystery reader and perhaps a fantasy reader as well. Definitely someone who likes historical fiction. I know I am well hooked into the series now.
Wasn't this a tasty dish?.......2005-12-29
Brother Cadfael is both pleased and displeased when his old love, Richildis, arrives at the Abbey with her husband, to take up residence as a permanent lodger. In return for permanent food, shelter and all things comfortable, Richildis's husband, Gervase Bonel, proposes to deed the ownership of his manor to the Abbey, a fact which does not sit well with his stepson, Edwin, to whom was promised ownership of the manor. In old age, Gervase had grown cantankerous and had taken a spiteful pleasure in goading Edwin into a rage about reneging on his promise of passing on the ownership of the manor to him. After eating a highly spiced and sauced dish of partridge, Gervase dies, and suspicion immediately falls on Edwin. The dish was poisoned with monkshood, an oil made of which, was brewed by Cadfael to use as a liniment for the old and arthritic monks. As usual in a Cadfael story, there are several characters who have equal reason and opportunity to have committed the murder, so it's up to Cadfael to sort out the mystery. It's another fascinating story, set in the 12th century, with a wealth of detail about mediaeval life and with Brother Cadfael sorting out the clues.
Derek Jacobi returns heard but not seen as BROTHER CADFAEL in more than just an interesting plot-twister!.......2005-09-14
I have always believed that the BBC made the finest adaptations for radio and television, and indeed the BROTHER CADFAEL series is no exception; Bert Coules (who most recently adapted Sherlock Holmes for BBC radio) and the fine actor Philip Madoc brought Cadfael to life in three adaptations which are well worth listening to if you can: MONKS HOOD, THE VIRGIN IN THE ICE and DEAD MAN'S RANSOM. However, Sir Derek Jacobi was an excellent Cadfael for television ... even if some of the teleplays didn't quite follow the plot of the original novels. Acorn Audio did something quite extraordinary when they turned the audio tracks of the four teleplays of the first Cadfael TV series into an audio series, adding a narrator to fill in the gaps and adding some slight commentary on the action which could not be seen on an audiotape; in doing so, they tightened up the narrative to keep the stories moving at a good clip so that the listener would not lose interest, and Stephen Flynn's narration is well-read and well-written. This story brings Brother Cadfael's pre-cloistered past back to haunt him while he struggles to both solve a murder and protect the son of his former love and has enough twists and turns in the plot to keep the viewer (or listener in this case!) rivetted, and I have to say in this recording's favor that the telepay follows the book very closely, more so than many of those in the TV series. I am sorry that Acorn Audio hasn't adapted the rest of the televised Cadfael stories into this format, and the only grievance I have is that the cast of characters is not read out at the end of each story (all we get to know is that Sir Derek Jacobi plays Brother Cadfael, when there are some fine actors in each of the stories). This is something entirely new, coming somewhere in between actual radio drama and books-on-tape, and I highly recommend it for anyone interested in the Brother Cadfael series. The listener will not lose anything by not seeing the action on a TV screen, and the acting you will HEAR combined with the narration will definitely provide an ejoyable listening experience.
Masterful Medieval Mystery........................2003-07-28
This is the first Brother Cadfael mystery that I have read. In the past I have enjoyed the Brother Cadfael Mysteries on PBS and that is what prompted me to read one for myself.
The language is difficult to understand at times, (I suggest keeping a dictionary handy)but the mystery is a masterful "who done it". In this story the husband of a former love of Cadfaels suddenly dies and it is discovered that the victim was poisoned by the deadly Monk's Hood. The same tincture that Brother Cadfael himself has prepared for medicinal purposes. There is a large cast of characters that may have purpose and reason to murder Gervase Bonel but when the authorities believe the murderer to be his young stepson Brother Cadfael takes matters into his own hands to prove the youth innocent.
This is not a light read. Stick with it. You will enjoy it.

Product Description
Brother Cadfael, a twelfth-century Benedictine monk living in an abbey in Shrewsbury, England is not only a devout man of the cowl, but also a slueth of deadly accuracy. In addition to his official duties as the monastery's herbalist, Cadfael finds much unofficial business to occupy his time -- like solving some of Shropshire's most perplexing murder cases. From The Leper of Saint Giles, in which he must unmask the killer responsible for two dead bodies and a marriage that is never to be, to Monk's Hood, which revolves around an unexplained poisoning, Cadfael -- with the aid of Sheriff Hugh Beringar and in spite of the abbey's meddling Prior -- repeatedly proves a most resourceful detective. In The Sanctuary Sparrow and One Corpse Too Many, Cadfael is again called upon to expose cold-blooded killers and save lives -- all while trying to honor his monastic vows. Filled with suspensful plotting and rich in period detail, these medieval whodunnits are truly crime classics. This special QPB edition features all four Brother Cadfael books adapted for television and shown on PBS in 1995 as part of it's "Mystery" series.
