Description:
The contents of heavy metal accumulated by air pollution in the cedar tree needles from the green area of Konya city centre were measured by chemical analyses. The needle samples were collected from two types of trees (about 10-15 and 20-25-years-old trees) from eight different pollution regions for two different sampling periods. Results of sulphur dioxide and particle matter analyses were used for measurement of air pollution effect on accumulation of heavy metals in the vegetation. Contents of heavy metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Co, Cr, Cd and V) were determined for sampling periods, tree ages and sampling places. Results of the present study showed that accumulations of heavy metals in the old trees were generally higher than those of young trees. Similarly, heavy metal contents of needles collected in spring 2004 were higher than those of needles collected in autumn 2003. Accumulation of heavy metals via sulphur dioxide pollution and particle matter originated from usage of low quality fossil fuels, which might affect the living organisms in the city centre. On the other hand, Pb levels in the samples from Karatay Industry Park (3.53ppm in 2004) showed that people are health living around the industry, and heavy traffic area is under risk. According to the other sampling areas, the chromium levels were also very high around the Chrome-Magnesite Factory Garden (87.15ppm in 2004); it could be a toxic risk for people working around the factory. The heavy metal levels obtained from the other samples were not as high a risk level for the living organisms in the sampling areas.

Dalian is a seaside city situated in the northeastern monsoon area of China. For the first time, levels of PCDD/F and PCB congeners in pine (Cedrus deodara) needles of Dalian urban areas were investigated. Two sampling campaigns with 17 sampling points were performed in 2002. The summation of tetra- to octachlorinated PCDD/Fs and summation of 209 PCB congeners in Dalian pine needles averaged 127+/-40ng/kg (dry) and 4389+/-1575ng/kg (dry), respectively. Average toxic equivalence (TEQ) for PCDD/Fs and PCBs are 2.1 and 0.4ng/kg (dry), respectively. The pine needles can differentiate spatial variation of the pollutants. The PCDD/F and PCB levels in Dalian pine needles are low or comparable with other international regions that were not impacted by evident point sources. The data can serve as a base for long-term spatial and temporal studies of PCDD/Fs and PCBs in China.

Description:
Mediterranean forests in northern Morocco have been studied. Tree species composition and abundance were investigated in 84 forest sites, distributed throughout the sandstone formation of the Tangier region. The relative abundance of 15 tree and arborescent shrub species was related, by ordination analysis, to altitude, disturbance by fire, and soil fertility. High-elevation forests were dominated by Cedrus atlantica, Quercus pyrenaica and Pinus pinaster. Sacred forests (protected as holy burial places) had a distinct stand structure, and were considered as refuges, for maintaining biodiversity at landscape scale. The evergreen oak Quercus suber and the semideciduous Quercus canariensis co-dominated the lowland forests. The mean basal area of the studied forests was 34 m^2 ha^-^1. The mean trunk size (dbh) for Q. suber was 24 cm and for Q. canariensis 36.5 cm; in both cases there were indications of declining regeneration at population level. A comparative biogeographical analysis with the equivalent region in southern Spain (separated by the Strait of Gibraltar; 14 km wide), indicated a possible biodiversity loss in the Moroccan forests.

Male and female fecundity parameters (flowering intensity, pollen germination, seed yield and seed quality) were measured on 161 trees in two populations of a Cedrus atlantica forest in Algeria across 7 years. We found a huge variation among trees for all variables, e.g., the number of cones per tree ranged from 0 to 770, the number of male branches from 0 to 59, and the number of male strobili per flowering branch from 15 to 398. The two populations only differed for female fecundity and there was no yearxpopulation interaction. The variation among years was highly significant for both male and female fecundity parameters. The ranking of the trees was globally maintained over years. However, fertility variation over the whole study period was lower than the variation observed in any single year, due to temporal stochasticity and cumulative effect. As usually found in this monoecious species, we observed a diversity of sexual types, from ''male'' to ''female'' individuals with a trade-off between the two functions. This polymorphism was stable over the time scale of the study. Female fecundity was correlated to tree dimension, but the correlation for male fecundity was weak. The consequences of this pattern of variation for the dynamics of genetic diversity are discussed.

I am from Cyprus, and I found this book very intresting. The author does a good job talking about the culture of the island and gives the basics for anyone that wants to pay a visit to this beautiful island. It is not in great detail but for a pocket book and for its prize has a great deal of information.

This very neat little paperback book is a colorful introduction to the Channel Islands, located in the Gulf of St. Malo between England and France. The pictures are wonderful and the text is full of the long and distinguished history of these islands. This book made me want to drop everything and go visit there! Really! "Waiting for June"is a short novel but so many things going on in Sophies senior year weird dreams,pregnant,strange notes,and arguements with her mother.Sophie is pregnant and her last year in high school she is pregnant and refuses to say who her baby's daddy is.Sophie gets weird dreams about whales who are suppose to tell her what gender her baby is and her name.Sophie bestfriend Joshua helps her but for so many reason people from school say that it's baby Joshua's but it's not only peoople from school it's Sophies mom to.Sophie finds a note in her locker threatning she does'nt even plan to show it to joshua because she thinks it's Acacia sending her the notes.Sophie finmds out that Acacia is not sending her any threatning letters.Its not until the birth of her daughter June when her mother confronts that her father was black this novel is not only mysterious but yet very dramatic.

Waiting for Another Book.......2004-06-17

I checked this book out from my local library on a whim. I didn't read the inside flap, therefore I had no clue what to expect. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised with this book. The story revolves around Sophie, a pregnant teenager, whose past is a mystery even to herself and whose unborn child she is carrying is a secret she keeps to herself. Sweeney develops the story in such a way that it keeps the reader guessing and wanting to know all of the characters' secrets. Furthermore, the characters themselves are very human, very believable. This book was a short, yet intriguing, page-turner and I am definitely looking forward to reading more books by Joyce Sweeney.

I can't tell you how wonderful I think this book is! It combines harsh realities with a little mystery and some mysticism thrown in. I enjoyed it immensely!

A Truly Great Book.......2004-04-15

I thought that this book was an awesome book and I enjoyed reading it a lot. Joyce Sweeney wrote this book really well and I couldn't put it down. I read it in one day and I loved it. I recommend this book for young adults and older....it's a wonderful story. I liked how it was written and how it keeps you wanting to read more.

a magical enthralling book.......2004-03-15

The book is a story of a high school girl who became pregnant, and chooses to keep her child. Her journey through her pregnancy and the birth of her child is special. I don't know how to express how special this book is without giving you the conclusion (but not the ending)...
This book is special, and I am foutunate to have read it. I hope you will too. Sorry for using the word "special" so many times, but it is appropriate.

She longs for somebody to take over who knows what he's doing. In the meantime, she walks through grocery stores and libraries and waits. The woman is sure of one thing: "Men who wear Brooks Brothers suits and pretend to read books are a step backward, and not far enough back, at that. I'd be better off reading a Victorian novel where set patterns and places bring a little consolation and the story line goes somewhere." She's better off with her cigars at the Majestic Grill waiting while the rain beats on the windows.
