THE GOOD, THE GREAT, THE ALMOST PERFECT.......1997-10-12
If I was stranded in Northern Ontario with no hope of return, what would i do? Pray for a copy of Up North!!
This is a purely entertaining, and fact filled rendition of Ontario's wildlife.
There is only one fault in the whole book, some species were left out, ones that are very common in ontario, but that is zilch compared to the great format and organization of the book!
This books information is zany and humorous, but actually educational, and interesting.
I recommend that you jump into your seats, and order this book today!

Book Description
Warblers, wolves, and whirligig beetles-the creatures of the canoe country come alive in Canoe Country Wildlife. In this read-aloud-treasure, "Sparky" Stensaas, naturalist and storyteller, intrigues readers with his tales of meeting the forest inhabitants-from tiny toads to majestic moose. Each page describes these creatures and their habits accurately so you'll know where and when to look for them. Detailed line drawings illustrate each animal clearly so you'll recognize what you're seeing.
Written for the curious naturalist in each of us, Canoe Country Wildlife takes readers a giant step beyond field guides. It's good reading before, during, and after a trip through canoe country.
Customer Reviews:
A superb book, essential on any canoe trip........2004-06-03
This is a great field guide to all the creatures you might encounter on a canoe trip in the North Woods. It is very succinct, yet written in an interesting prose, with about 2 to 3 pages dedicated to each animal, fish, or insect it describes. We consider it an essential part of the gear we take on all our canoe trips up North. You will not be disappointed in this book. Great for all ages.
Excellent!.......2001-06-05
An excellent overview of wildlife of the Northern Minnesota area. There are interesting and informative descriptions of everything from birds to insects to fish. The scope of the book is so broad that only a few of each type of creature can be listed, but he has chosen the ones, such as loons, herons, and otters, that are so special to the North woods. Highly recommended.
This Book Description Leaves A Lot To Be Desired.......1999-07-17
'Nuff said. The rating-stars do not apply, as I have not seen the book, and am not likely to until I can find out more on its content. *-(

Book Description
Nature/Regional
An essential guide to bird identification in this wilderness region.
Voyageurs National Park, on the Minnesota-Ontario border, is beloved by campers, canoeists, kayakers, hikers, and especially, bird-watchers. Its solitude offers a relatively undisturbed habitat, and its unusually varied ecosystem-the open water of large lakes, wetlands, and upland forests-provides a unique home for its bird population. Indeed, Voyageurs encompasses some of the greatest diversity of bird life in North America with over one hundred species known to breed within the park and even more nonbreeding visitors.
This book describes one hundred of Voyageurs' most commonly seen birds-from the familiar Common Loon to more unusual species such as the Black-Backed Three-Toed Woodpecker and the Mourning Warbler. Each entry provides a full-color photograph, a detailed description, behavioral information, and tips for where to go in the park to see these birds. Here we learn that more than half of the warblers of eastern North America can be found in the Voyageurs environs. And we are provided with explanations for surprising facts such as the paucity of sandpipers in the park (it has few of the sandy beaches and mudflats they require) and how beavers influence the bird species that reside there.
Voyageurs is one of the best birding destinations in the national park system. Until now there was no adequate resource for those wishing to enjoy its singular combination of species and habitats. This richly illustrated volume fills that void. Not only informational, it will also be a cherished memento for visitors to the Minnesota-Ontario border country and an inspiration for those planning such a trip.
The Voyageurs Region National Park Association was formed in 1965 to work for the creation of Voyageurs National Park. Since the park's authorization by Congress in 1971, the organization has worked to preserve the natural, recreational, and historic resources of Voyageurs National Park and to promote public enjoyment of the park.
Distributed for the Voyageurs Region National Park Association

Good for a quick overview with no "meat".......2004-09-14
"Ontario Provincial Parks Trail Guide: Trail Guide" summarizes a good few of the many provincial parks in Ontario. The parks are listed by region (Northwestern, Southern, Algonquin, etc.) in the province. The descriptions of the parks are not extensive, neither are all of the trails for each park listed or described. Walking/hiking distances are given for each trail that has been listed. At the end of each region section, 2-3 trails are highlighted in a section called "Al's picks" and described in greater depth (some with B&W photos).
While no detailed maps are required of any guide book, it would have been helpful if the book included some maps with a few key cities and roads in Ontario, and the parks pointed out. The parks would have been much easier to locate this way than by just listing addresses and telephone numbers to contact. There are no maps in the book except for a region map (without any detail) at the beginning of each region section. As an avid hiker I expected to see small detailed maps of at least a few selected trails. There are no trail maps in this book.
If you visit the Ontario parks website, you can find similar information as that given in the book. And with a little more surfing, you can even find websites of conservation authorities with - yes, you guessed it - maps of park trails.
"Ontario Provincial Parks Trail Guide: Trail Guide" is a brief summary of the wealth of provincial parks Ontario has got to offer. While it's not of much use to avid hikers like myself, it is good for people wanting to get a general idea of some of the parks in Ontario.

Customer Reviews:
Best of a Good Series.......2003-12-07
My wife and I often go bird watching while we travel. As a result, I often feel like a beginner, not even knowing which species I can expect in the locality I'm visiting. So, we usually have two bird guides with us and one of them is the Lone Pine field guide of the area.
The Lone Pine field guides all cover roughly 300 species with one page per species. A map showing where the species can be seen within the area covered by the field guide accompanies every description.
In some cases, the drawings of the birds are more accurate than that of the more comprehensive field guides.
This is my favorite of the Lone Pine field guides because in the description it also includes best sites to see the species. For example, for Snowy Owl, Toronto's Pearson International Airport is mentioned. So, this book is not only an excellent beginner/intermediate field guide, but also and excellent basic bird finder's guide as well.

Book Description
Pieces of Me is a compilation of writing from girls and women ages 11 through 55. This unique collection of poems, short stories, essays, songs and scenes addresses everything from love and war to culture and current events. As a result of such diverse voices,

Customer Reviews:
Inspiring and exciting collection of writing..........2006-02-09
I just sat down with "Pieces of Me," and I couldn't put it down! I loved going from page to page not knowing what I would read about next. The writers are young girls with amazing ideas and writing style, and there are also submissions by their mentors - female writers of all ages. A must have for anyone who loves to write.
An inspiration.......2005-08-09
I could not believe the blunt, truthful, creative, insightful pieces from the girls in this book! It's hard to believe that some of them are only teenagers. This book has inspired me to dig out my journal, open my heart, and write without censoring myself!
What a great book!.......2005-03-11
I absolutely loved it! I want to become a writer too now!!!!
BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL.......2005-02-08
Instead of putting their hearts on their sleeves, it's in these pages, in black ink for all the world to see. Want to know what goes on in teenage girls' minds? Then get PIECES OF ME, and you'll want to give a piece of yourself.
Nice work, good ideas.......2005-02-08
This book not only has thought-provoking pieces from many young women, it is also a source for great writing exercises.
The pieces have short intros telling how they came about as part of a mentorship program. The same exercises the mentors and mentees use would be fun for any writer to use to get the juices flowing.
