      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good introduction, but by no means comprehensive.......2006-01-26

This is an interesting introduction to various weeds and plants (not mushrooms) that you can forage for anywhere from common suburbia to the backcountry trails. I enjoyed it, and Wiltens' illustrations are clear black-and-white field sketches. The book has no photographs, but in plant identification, photographs only tell part of the story and don't let you highlight or emphasize a particular feature of a plant, like the "tiny hairs" that the observer must identify to know the difference between an edible tasty plant and hemlock. It's not comprehensive-- Wiltens even says as much in the introduction, insisting that readers should positively ID against three different field guides (though without recommending any reputable ones), and being a slim volume means it's good for carrying in a backpack, but can't provide all the details. I think a section on common preparations would have made the volume more concise, instead of breaking it down and repeating instructions for leaching for each plant needing it (for instance).

4 out of 5 stars Meet Your Friends and Enemies of the Plant Kingdom.......2000-07-15

James Wiltens has carefully chosen 60 or so of plants found in Northern California that can easily be identified by beginning naturalists and botanists as edible or poisonous plants. Each plant covered in the book includes information about where to find it, how to prepare and eat it (or avoid it), as well as interesting trivia about some of the species. Wiltens has also included a drawing of each plant, noting its key identification features. Be sure to read Wiltens' introduction, covering the do's and don'ts and safety of flower collecting!

Nice and compact, fit well in a travel bag instead of using one of the larger/heavier guides that cover the entire country.

I had already purchased several useful guides on Wales, The Rough Guide to Wales and Wales by The Lonely Planet, both had their strongpoints, are larger versus this handy pocket size. I wanted more detail on Cardiff so I purchase this next. This pocket size guide has something I value a lot; more internet websites listing for hotels, other places of interest, with a succinct description. Naturally, it has a more expansive list of places to stay, dine, with price range coding. Also suggestions on what to sight see, as one would expect. It is well organized and also has information on the surrounding South Wales area. It has a short chronology of the history of the area. Nice city section and area maps are in the final pages. Limited black and white photos are interspersed in this guide, more would have delighted. This guide had information on local golf with websites. I am an avid golfer and have other golf guides that cover that topic, but did not have some of these included.

Dr. Traxel's work on the Welsh Indians of North America is a well researched study into what many historians refute as total myth. The author digs deep into anthropological, biological, archeological, historical and linguistic records to vindicate his investigations.
In the year 1170 Prince Madoc of Wales departed his homeland due to strife and political turmoil. The first of his three voyages sets down in Mexico, the second arrives at Mobile Bay, Alabama and the third expedition touches down at the mouth of the Mississippi River. From these geographical points the Welsh made their way inland over the centuries while fighting Indian enmities and depredations. Many were eventually killed and the few survivors managed to migrate across and up the Missouri River, therefore later to be contentiously known as the Mandan Indians.
The evidence Traxel puts forth is invigorating and with the exception of the first few chapters (which seem to tarry on), the book is a perceptive read of early human origins, behavioral practices and migratory patterns.

                            4 out of 5 stars A Look beyond History.......2005-09-11

The fascinating theories about the Welsh Prince Madoc, believed by some to have discovered America in 1170, come to life in "Footprints of the Welsh Indians: Settlers in North America before 1492," by William L. Traxel. Wading through a tremendous amount of information and centuries of speculation and hypothesis, Traxel presents a compelling argument for what he calls "people who have no other voice" (p. 205). These mysterious people, sometimes called the "Asguaw" and the "Tallega," according to Traxel's conclusions were probably connected to the Mandan tribes who were virtually wiped out by smallpox in 1837. Including maps, drawings, and photographs that supplement an engaging presentation of information, Traxel's book is of interest to anyone who would like to look beyond the historical door that remains closed on the so-called "Welsh Indians."

In this perceptive, chilling look at censorship and religious fanaticism, tenth-grader Todd and his family discover that their secure suburban community is no protection against obsessive, destructive ideas when Todd's little sister is brainwashed into hating and fearing Halloween. The compelling plot and Todd's likeable narrative help bring the complex issues home to young readers. An ALA Best Book for Young Adults.

Todd's family moved to this town because it seemed so safe. Life on Tranquility Lane was pretty close to perfect for him and his two sisters, Diana and Marnie. This year, though, just when Todd and Diana are getting settled into high school, things are changing.

First there has been some vandalism, and Todd's house was a target. All of their Halloween decorations were ruined. Several cars have been stolen and crashed by joyriders. And Todd's little sister Marnie is having terrible nightmares and seems really bothered by something.

Then there are some bad signs in the community. A group of local parents are fighting to have books banned in the schools. One of the parents is the mother of Marnie's babysitter, and Todd's family finds out that Marnie's babysitter is a fundamental Christian who has been telling Marnie scary stories about what will happen to her and her family if she does not join the religion. Is this safe little town so safe after all?

I liked that this town was portrayed as so normal, yet such bad things were happening in it. I also liked Todd's family. They functioned and solved problems very well together.

When I began reading this book, I was unsure if I would like it or not. But soon after beginning, I found myself caught up in the plotline. The way Peck so vividly describes the world we live in, as well as the false sense of security that many have, struck me. What was particularly fascinating was how he captured the attitudes of high schoolers, how they wish to be "cool", and the uncertainty many people experience below placid facades. This book is a must-read for anyone, young or old, male or female, "cool" or not.

The trouble with many young adult books is that they simply aren't well written and the characters are stagnant and interchangeable. This is far from the case in Richard Peck's "The Last Safe Place on Earth". In reading this book you can tell that Peck prefers to write for a young audience, as opposed to some of his peers who seem forced into that realm because adults won't tolerate their simplistic writing styles. "The Last Safe Place on Earth" never demeans its audience with sledgehammer plot points. The characters figure out what is happening in their small town alongside the reader, not a frustrating 20 pages later.

Peck's novel teems with interesting, multi-dimensional characters of all ages who snag the attention of the reader from the first page. In reading the book, I simultaneously felt I already knew the characters, and wanted to know them even better. The themes of censorship, troubled homes, and religious fanaticism impact the peaceful town. The ways each character deals with these events create a wonderful spread of heartful mirth and family bonding.

Richard Peck has weaved a story that is well written, extremely interesting, believable and relevant.

Engagingly narrated in the first person by main character Todd Tobin, the book reveals the Tobins to be crafted as an All-American family. They are not perfect, however, in the vein of Leave it to Beaver or Ozzie and Harriet. This family has its flaws, questions its actions and makes mistakes. You can easily believe that they are based on a real family.

In addition to the excellent writing and characterization, the text touches on some alarmingly real and modern issues facing families today. One of the Tobin family helps organize an AIDS seminar which is virtually ignored by the conservative community. Todd's best friend has an alcoholic mother. The Tobin's babysitter is from a religious fanatic family and has corrupted the youngest daughter's mind in a way that borders on child abuse. Several members of the community are trying to ban books from the school library because they do not show Christianity in a superior position to other religions. Mr. Peck does not resolve all these issues and there aren't any easy answers, just like real life.

These are all important issues that touch the livesof all. Everyone should be required to read this book.

Todd has totally fallen for Laurel, his little sister Marnie's babysitter. She is preppy, distant and completely mysterious. But when Marnie starts having bad dreams about evil and hellfire, Todd realizes that it's because Laurel is filling Marnie's head with her own special brand of Christian fundamentalism. Todd finds himself torn between his desire for Laurel and his distaste with her personal convictions. Things heat up even more when a local church group, of which Laurel's mom is a member, pressure the school to remove certain books from the library. Todd starts thinking long and hard about his views on religion, censorship and individual responsibility. The implications and consequences of this novel will hurt your head (but in a good way).
