      Book Description

Out of school, out of work, and out of motivation, Abby Rose is contemplating her life and wondering what to do next. It's the kind of situation that would get some girls down, but luckily Abby's got a heart the size of Texas-and a bank account to match. But when she discovers the gardener dead in her greenhouse, Abby realizes what she needs to do with herself: she needs to solve a murder...

      5 out of 5 stars Great detective.......2006-08-24

First in the Yellow Rose series, this series is in Texas, featuring Abby Rose. Abby's gardener is murdered, and she wants to find out why: why he was killed and why he was there. Abby's fraternal twin Kate helps her run the computer business that their father left them, and she also gets roped into helping Abby find the answers to her questions. In this, Abby finds out answers to other questions, ones she wished she hadn't asked. I found this to be better than your average cozy - I was leery of the basis of the spoiled rich girl playing detective - but Abby redeems herself.

4 out of 5 stars Witty, Charming Début!.......2006-07-29

Introducing Abby Rose...a privileged woman living in River Oaks, Texas...a wealthy town near Houston. In the first book in the Yellow Rose Mystery series, we find that Abby has inherited her late father's home and computer business along with her twin sister, Kate. The business runs fine without them, and they are able to pursue other interests while having a steady income. Having no real ambition in her life, and feeling left out now that Kate is finishing her dissertation and moving in with her boyfriend, Abby longs for something meaningful to fill her time. When their hard-working gardener is found dead after he promises to share a large family secret with the twins, Abby begins to investigate both his death and her past. Questions about their adoption begin to loom again in Abby and Kate's mind, and she wonders if they have the whole truth about their birthparents. When the trail to a killer leads her directly to a shady adoption agency, Abby begins to ask some tough questions. Will she discover the killer and the key to her past in time to stop a murderer on the loose?

This was a great start to a new series! The fact that Abby and her twin sister, Kate, sometimes work together in the book (but are not "joined at the hip"), made a likeable, interesting combination. The mystery itself offered a lot of twists and turns, and I was kept guessing throughout the book as to the twin's past, and to the identity of the killer. The only thing that I disliked in the book was the overuse of clichés. I know previous reviewers have mentioned this as well, and I completely agree with their feelings on the subject. However, the book was too good to pass up even with this minor flaw, and I will eagerly pick up future installments in this fun, witty series.

The next book in the series is called "A Wedding to Die For". Enjoy!

      3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read.......2005-12-16

I enjoyed the book. However, I agree with the Reviewer that said the main character used too many bad cliches. It did seem forced and got to be a little "too much". I thought the ending could have had a more interesting twist but I knew that wasn't going to happen because it is a series so all the main characters had to stay in tact.

      4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2005-08-15

My second book by Leann Sweeney and I laughed all the way through at the antics of Abby Rose, an amateur sleuth who manages to get in and out of trouble in delightful ways. I'll be buying a third book by Ms. Sweeny as they are easy reads and keep you entertained.

      5 out of 5 stars Fabulous first mystery! Abby's a winner........2005-02-15

Abby Rose is trying to decide what to do with her life. Since she has a large bank account, she doesn't have to rush to decide. Her twin Kate is soon moving out to be with her boyfriend, and Abby doesn't know what she will do with the large house their father left them - it's too big for just her.

After she discovers her gardner, Ben, dead in the greenhouse, she realizes how little she knew about him. She begins to look into his life so that she can express her condolences. That just opens up more questions, like who killed Ben's wife years before? And why was he working for Abby's father?

Abby contracts with her ex-husband, who swears he is clean and getting his life together, to help her renovate the house in Galveston. It hasn't been lived in for years. She finds herself having to interact with him more than she likes.

The sexy detective from the Houston P.D. who is investigating Ben's death, adds some spice to Abby's dull life. Especially when he tells her that Ben was poisoned. Now Abby is determined to unravel the mystery surrounding Ben and who killed him. She finds more questions to have to find answers to.

In her investigation, she finds herself in many sticky situations. Can she discover the truth before someone puts an end to her?

This is the first Yellow Rose Mystery. LeAnn Sweeney has a real winner. I had trouble putting this book down. Abby and Kate are terrific. The Texas setting is fabulous. I've always wanted to go to Galveston, and I feel like I've at least had a short visit there. I just started reading A Wedding to Die For, the second in this series. It looks to be just as great as the first.

      I highly recommend this book!

      ____________
      BOTTOM LINE: Buy this book.

This is a well-constructed, quality book that will last for many years. The songs are legitimate Texas Blues, tabbed just the way the real bluesmen played them, not "in the style of". This is the REAL BLUES.

And a note about the "OAK ANTHOLOGY OF THE BLUES" series... Every book is collectible. That's why most are out of print and sell used for $50 and up (take a look at Oak's "Delta Blues" by Grossman). So, look at it this way: You're making an investment. You will not be disappointed. Buy this book!!!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent teaching book.......1999-08-29

This is a very good book to explore the styles of Mance Lipscomb,Lightning Hopkins,Blind Lemon Jefferson and others. There is a feature on each Artist and an instruction on how to play each song. This is a style of playing that you really have to work at,but the tab makes it fun and rewarding. There is a plastic record (reminds me of the '70s ) which comes with the book and contains the Artists playing the songs. The only slight downfall for me was the choice of songs relating to Lightning Hopkins, but apart from that this is a brilliant book!

4 out of 5 stars Old but useful.......2005-09-10

The version I ordered used was very old, I can't remember if the publishing date was listed. Regardless, it is useful. Varieties change so quickly, and nurseries often change their supplier. The overall layout is not updated and easy to read (numbered steps and lists, more whitespace). The content is very applicable to Houston in my almost 2 years of experience and use of several other Texas gardening books that have been too broad in scope (the climate varies here!).

5 out of 5 stars A Garden Book for Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast by River.......2001-09-04

I have employed this book for over twenty-five years and attribute my lovely gardens to it's advice. I will be ordering the new edition as I have relocated to the Gulf area once again after many years on the Eastern seaboard, but now I am in Florida. Still, the month by month instruction for garden maintenance, plantings, pruning, fertilizing etc. will work in my area of Florida. I highly recommend this to any gardener along the Gulf Coast.

5 out of 5 stars An Essential Book for Houston Gardeners.......2000-04-24

This is a terrific all-around gardening book for the Houston/East Texas Gardener written by the premier Houston gardening club. It is probably good for the whole Gulf Coast too, since the climates are similar. As an ex-northeasterner and novice gardener, I can say that if you are gardening in Houston and can only buy one book, this is it.

The text covers everything from herbs to flowers to trees, as well as potting, lawns, ground covers, vines, shrubs and vegetables. Special sections concentrate on Azaleas, Camellias and Roses, as well as soil improvement, watering, drainage, diseases and insects. In each section, tables list best planting times, blooming times, light and wattering requirements and other comments for each type of plant.

I found the book great for brain-storming, as well as for carrying to the garden store to determine if the great-looking flower or vine was really suitable for planting in my backyard.

My only regret: that it's not 50 pages longer...

1 out of 5 stars No idea where the hikes are.......2007-10-14

My dog and I are new to Los Angeles. A thoughtful friend bought us this book. I haven't use the book yet because I can't figure out where any of the hikes are. The directions say things like take 101 North or 405 South, but from where? Los Angeles is very big and I have no way of knowing if the hike is an hour from where I am or twenty minutes. There are no larger maps, just small trail guides. How am I supposed to know where Cheesboro Canyon, Rocky Oaks or the Verdugo Hills are?

                    5 out of 5 stars great book!.......1998-12-24

This was a great book for us. We were beginner hikers and so was our dog. We were able to go to places we had never even heard of in the Santa Monica Mountains. Excellent advice for removing ticks. The pattern for canine hiking boots was great - both of our dogs have some fancy boots that they love to show off.

An easy read, with the best coverage of dog friendly trails and parks around Las Vegas, loaded with basic hiking information for dogs and humans that's good anywhere. The sections on, on leash, and off leash local parks are a nice bonus.

5 out of 5 stars We love this book!.......2006-03-13

It has a bunch of new trails we never knew about. There are photos of every hike, excellent directions and maps. The photos were the selling point. They give a good idea of what to expect. We took our dogs out to Goodsprings and they just had the best time. It was a beautiful hike. There wasn't a soul out there. No leashes, either. We all had so much fun.

I actually read this book quite a while ago, yet it still dwells in my head and causes me to have nightmares to this very day. This author does a wonderful job with her characters and story line and I was drawn into her webbed catastrophe as if I was there. Amazing book and one that I can truly say has left me traumatized.

3 out of 5 stars Ravenova's right on the money........2007-07-13

                    WARNING: POSSIBLE SPOILERS

I can't really add too much to Ravenova's review. She (he?) said it all first, and said it better.

One thing I do want to just reiterate was the almost complete lack of characterization. Now... maybe I've been spoiled by Stephen King, Clive Barker, hell, even Richard Laymon, but I NEED more characterization than Pinborough offered in this book. This was the print equivalent of watching one of those really schlocky SciFi Channel movies on Saturday night. As Ravenova said, many (most) of the characters, especially those introduced in the last half, were no more than ciphers, just names on a page.

Even Matt, the protagonist and narrator, was shallow and unsympathetic. Now, I'm in no position to tell a writer her craft, but I think I'm qualified to say what does and does not work for me. And Matt just didn't do it. Frankly, he was a weaseley little bitch. The constant self-pity and whining, and justification of hopping into the sack with a new girl mere days after his fiancee dies horribly, they just combined at the end to make me hope the book would wind up with him revealing that he was dying horribly of some mutant disease, and that this was all being frantically scribbled down by him before the end. This was especially ironic considering that Matt felt exactly the same way about another character in the novel.

Ah well. It was a semi-entertaining way to burn a few hours. Normally, I'd give a book like this two stars, but the ideas presented in it were interesting enough (and the ending seems to blatantly suggest there'll be a sequel), that I'll give it an extra star on the hope that Pinborough will write a sequel telling us exactly what the hell was going on in the first place. Because, even though the book had its creepy moments and cool visual scenes, there wasn't really much _story_ there, if you know what I mean.

From start to finish this is a proven horror novel at its supreme best. You won't put it down, and if you do--well, you won't want to. Trust me.
This was, simply a brilliant, dark, delicious tale that gives a new meaning to...breeding.

The first two chapters blew me away. I couldn't WAIT to get into the middle of the book. But it took an unexpected turn for the worst. I had great expectations for this one, but I was sorely disappointed. Even the ending went unresolved.

                    5 out of 5 stars Scary!!.......2007-01-08

This is one of those rare horror novels that hits the ground running on Page One and doesn't break stride once all the way through. Like Graham Masterton, Sarah Pinborough is an English writer, and there is something indefinably creepy about horror novels written by British authors that I just adore; the BREEDING GROUND is a perfect example. Even though Ms. Pinborough's setting is quite modern, there's something of the clanking chain and dank, moldering castle overarching her narrative, and it's stunningly effective in elevating the chill factor. Matthew and Chloe are a young couple with a new baby on the way. Their concerns are the same as for expectant parents since the beginning of time: the health of their growing fetus, weight gain, morning sickness and such. Chloe and Matt are typical expectant parents, but when Chloe delivers, it is something that neither she or Matt could have expected in their wildest nightmares. Their child isn't...well...it isn't right at all. It isn't even human. And women all over the countryside are giving birth to these horrifying, spidery monstrosities that are an entirely new species, parasites that use their hosts for food and as hosts for their own dreadful spawn, leaving behind web-enshrouded ghost towns that stand as bleak, silent evidence of their evolutionary success. And the monsters are spreading exponentially! BREEDING GROUND is a wonderfully entertaining and shriek-inspiring novel beautifully wrought by an author with an unflinching eye and a steady hand.

                    Book Description

Sarah Tracy has spent her entire life under constant supervision, always under the thumb of one older sibling or another. Now, at eighteen, it's time she was married, so she is being sent to dinner parties, plays, teas, soirees, talks, and chaperoned walks -- always accompanied, always watched.

Sarah's tired of being shipped around, tired of being reminded that it's time to find a suitable husband. Then Sarah sees an advertisement looking for a young woman to oversee Mount Vernon, the old family home of George Washington. Lying to her family and her potential employer, Sarah becomes mistress of this decaying symbol of American freedom.

And then comes the American Civil War. As battles rage around her, Sarah is determined to create a haven of peace at Mount Vernon. Sarah single-handedly manages to keep Mount Vernon out of the war. But while she is able to influence generals, soldiers, and the president, she learns she doesn't hold such sway over her own heart -- as she also discovers true love.

Based on a true story, this is the amazing tale of one girl's path to womanhood.

Ann Rinaldi can write well-developed characters and historical romance - read TIME ENOUGH FOR DRUMS! However, this book is not a good example of that. It is written as if Sarah (main character) is writing it, and unfortunately, it ends up feeling like it really was written by a teenage non-writer. There is some interesting historical information, but all in all, the characters and relationships were underdeveloped and the descriptions were bland. It read like plot point, fact, plot point, fact.... I felt like a was reading a rough draft that hadn't been fleshed out yet. I almost wondered if the writer got bored with this one and didn't spend time revising and polishing it.

3 out of 5 stars It'll hold your interest only because the main characters were real........2006-04-24

"Sarah's Ground" is a very mature book author Ann Rinaldi wrote. I found it interesting that she chose to employ the use of a diary method, yet kept the use of chapters and didn't use dates for each entry - just a double space between each one. The story was a bit slow moving, and I would have enjoyed reading more about the refurbishing of the house. I had no idea that Mount Vernon was neutral ground during the Civil War, much less that there was a Mount Vernon Ladies' Association. What further astonished me was that there really a Sarah Tracy and Upton Herbert, and I was blown away to find out in Rinaldi's author's note that they were real people. If only for that reason read this book. I "sorta" recommend

                    3 out of 5 stars A nice, quiet read.......2005-07-17

Rinaldi has the most wonderful gift: she can take the tiniest, unknown aspect of history and make it as a brilliant as a star.

True to her talent, she once again chooses a lesser known event in history and gives it depth and dimension.

If you're looking for a highly devoloped romance, this isn't it. If you're looking for bloody action scenes from the Civil War... this isn't it. Instead, "Sarah's Ground" offers the point of view of a young woman and her struggle to remain neutral during the escalation of violence between the Union and Confederacy. She makes it her duty to protect Mount Vernon, where George Washington made his home decades before.

This book is a quiet, relaxing read in which you can easily whittle away the afternoon.

This book is SO boring just like any other Ann Rinaldi book except for "The Coffin Quilt" it was pretty good. Don't waste your time reading it because after a month you'll forget what happened in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Vivid slice of well-known American history........2004-06-17

This historical novel, set during the tumultuous times of the Civil War, profiles the work of Sarah Tracy, a young woman who is determined to lead an independent life. Sarah is tired of her family's constant supervision and their reminders that it's time for her to find a suitable husband. So she lies to her family and potential employer in order to secure a position as caretaker of Mount Vernon, George Washington's former home.

Sarah's struggle to keep Mount Vernon's grounds neutral, practically sitting on the border of the North and South and within miles of bloody conflicts, brings her into contact with famous figures from the Civil War, including Abraham Lincoln. She must decide how to handle the African-American servants working at Mount Vernon, whose status is unclear. She also has to work closely with Upton Herbert, a gracious Southern gentleman who becomes very important to her.

Ann Rinaldi, a historical re-enactor herself, certainly knows how to make the past interesting. Her main characters are three-dimensional and relatable; teens will be able to sympathize with Sarah and understand why she is so annoyed with her family. It's a shame though that the Epilogue feels the need to defend Rinaldi's artistic license. Most people should understand that a historical novel might embellish a story to make it interesting to the modern reader.

The author explains in the Epilogue that she invented the storyline of Sarah's friend Mary and their argument over Upton Herbert. Stories in which women argue over a man are disappointing and should almost always be avoided. Luckily, though, this story has enough going for it to overcome that problem. The Epilogue does refer to Sarah and Upton's future, answering questions that readers will no doubt want answered.

Ann Rinaldi once again brings to vivid life a slice of little-known American history in a way that will have readers wanting to learn more about Mount Vernon and Sarah's history.

Charlotte thinks she's going to a remote tropical island for a holiday with her boyfriend. So it comes as something of a surprise when she finds that the island is a correction centre - presided over by a dark, handsome figure known as the Master.

                    3 out of 5 stars A good B&D story.......2000-10-09

Charlotte is a pampered, arrogant priviledged woman who is taken to a mysterious island were slavery is legal. She thinks it's all for a holiday with her boyfriend, but in a very short time she is taken before the ruler of the island, stripped naked, bound, spanked and is then forced to begin training as a sex slave. Charlotte resists her training throughout the entire book and her will is never broken. She is constantly disobedient and she is constantly punished. She finds herself (reluctantly) aroused by being made helpless and punished, but she will not admit it to her masters or fellow slaves. At the end of the book she's still in the same situation as she was around the beginning. She's still fighting her masters and mistresses and she's still being heavily punished. The only big difference is that her boyfriend has left the island and will not be coming back for her, for another 12 months. I would have liked to see Charlotte finally give into one of her masters or mistresses. Or at least develop a friendship with one of the other slaves. But Charlotte is determined to be cold and stubborn and never change throughout the book. Perhaps Sarah Veitch would be kind enough to write a sequel, where Charlotte becomes more obedient and warms up to her new mistress in Camp Two.

                              Book Description

The Schools of Ground Zero is the story of how public school districts in Lower Manhattan dealt with the events of Sept.11, 2001, and their aftermath. Written by the parents of two children who attend public school in lower Manhattan, this book focuses on the effect that the Sept. 11 attacks had on the physical and mental health of New York City schoolchildren and their parents. At the time of the attacks, there were more than 6,000 children attending the public schools in the vicinity of the World Trade Center.

The Schools of Ground Zero uses the example of the World Trade Center attacks to illustrate how school officials may be unprepared to cope with emergencies, and uncertain how to proceed after the event. Drawing on interviews with parents, teachers, New York Board of Education officials and environmental consultants, the authors make practical recommendations for safeguarding the health and safety of schoolchildren in times of crisis.
