Book Description

Here is one of the great storytellers of our time reporting the hair-raising rescue missions of a deep-sea salvage tug that saved hundreds of lives during two decades of service.

In Grey Seas Under, Farley Mowat writes passionately of the courage of men and of a small, ocean-going salvage tug, Foundation Franklin. From 1930 until her final voyage in 1948, the stalwart tug's dangerous mission was to rescue sinking ships, first searching for them in perilous waters and then bringing them back to shore. Battered by towering waves, dwarfed by the great ships she towed, blasted by gale-force winds and frozen by squalls of snow and rain, Foundation Franklin and her brave crew saved hundreds of vessels and thousands of lives as they patrolled the North Atlantic, including waters patrolled by U-boats in wartime.

Mowat spent two years gathering this material and sailed on some of the missions he describes. The result is a modern epic-a vigorous, dramatic picture of the eternal battle between men and the cruel sea.

4 out of 5 stars The Liberty Ship Leicester and her ill fated cruise........2004-07-24

What a story! The ads on the back state this to be the predecessor of the Perfect Storm. I don't think that is the case but the story is great. The Leicester leaves London, and rides out two hurricanes. At the end of the second hurricane-the ballast shifts and the ship takes on a terrible list. The crew rides out the hurricane on her, and then hails two other freighters and abandons ship. The ship then travels on a southerly direction until spotted by a salvage tug. This and another salvage tug take Leicester to Bermuda where she endures another hurricane and is beached with the salvage tug. The last chapter details the salvage of both the ship and tug. This was indeed the ship that wouldn't sink.
This is a nice little story that will keep the reader's interest.
A Perfect Storm is so much more dramatic that I wouldn't rate this book as highly as that. It is an interesting read.

5 out of 5 stars The ship who wouldnýt sink.......2001-12-23

Farley Mowat had already written a book titled "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float," so he could very easily have called this volume, "The Ship Who Wouldn't Sink."

"The Serpent's Coil" is a companion book to "Grey Seas Under" and continues the story of ocean-going salvage tug operations in the Atlantic. "Grey Seas Under" chronicled the adventures of the tugboat `Foundation Franklin' before and during World War II. "The Serpent's Coil" takes place after the war and tells the tale of ships battered by the consuming fury of not one but three hurricanes (the "serpent's coil" of the title) in the autumn of 1948.

The author blends mystery, life-and-death adventure, and humor in his tale of rescue and salvage operations on `the Great Western Ocean.' The mystery centers around the disappearance of so many ex-wartime Liberty freighters in mid-ocean. Most of them were in ballast when they vanished, and it was assumed but never proven that shifting ballast caused the freighters to turn turtle and sink so rapidly that no message could be transmitted on the `how' or `why' of their plight.

`Leicester' was an ex-Liberty freighter fitted out in peace-time rig, newly under the command of Captain Hamish Lawson. He met his ship for the first time while she was taking ballast---"a sludge of sand and gravel dredged from the bottom of the [Thames]"---in preparation for a voyage to New York. Lawson had originally been scheduled to take command of another ex-Liberty freighter (called Sam-ships by the sailors, because they were built for the wartime Lend Lease program by `Uncle Sam'), but the `Samkey' had disappeared on route to Cuba. "'Leicester' was the twin sister to `Samkey'; built in the same yards, to the identical design. The only difference was that she was younger by a year..."

Captain Lawson's freighter was halfway between Ireland and Nova Scotia on the Great Circle route to New York when the first storm struck. `Leicester' rolled more than her Master liked, but she weathered the gale easily enough. His main worry was the ship's malfunctioning radio, without which he couldn't receive weather reports or transmit his own position. The Atlantic was not a good place to be in the middle of the hurricane season, without a radio.

Sure enough on the morning of September 14th, the crew of the `Leicester' found themselves sailing under another threatening sky:

"Lawson watched the ominous black arch [of the hurricane bar] for a quarter of an hour, and even during this short interval it seemed to grow, humping up from the horizon, spreading east and west. Above it, and around the hemisphere of sky, the high clouds were thickening, growing more opaque. A light, aimless breeze that seemed to come erratically from every point of the compass had begun to play about the ship. Lawson noticed that there were no gulls or other seabirds anywhere in sight."

The Sam-ship tried to dodge the hurricane, but it was much too late for such maneuvers. Within the hour, `Leicester' found herself enmeshed in the roaring hell of "The Serpent's Coil."

Mowat certainly knows how to tell a suspenseful sea story! The rest of his book describes the travails of `Leicester' as she founders but does not sink amidst the coils of the first hurricane. Her adventures afterward are entwined with those of the salvage and rescue tugs, `Foundation Lillian' and `Foundation Josephine,' plus another, even more savage hurricane that struck while the Sam-ship lay helplessly at what was supposed to be a safe mooring.

"The Serpent's Coil" and its even more exciting companion, "Grey Seas Under" are gripping testaments to the daring and skill of Canada's master seamen. Even the sections of these books that were strictly concerned with salvage operations kept me reading ahead at full steam.

Farley Mowat ,The Dean of the Canadian outdoor Writers, at the top of his form. If you've ever wondered what it was like to work on an Ocean going Tug Boat this is the book for you. Mr. Mowat uses his wartime experience and makes the men and vessels seem to have a life of their own. It's all done in a style that make putting this book down next to impossible. Be sure to have a turtleneck sweater and a steaming mug of Grog available because as you read this account of Maritime Tug's out of Canada you'll be chilled to the bone but kept warm by rapidly turning pages.

    Book Description

    Fairies can be downright dangerous!

In the Serpent's Coils marks the debut of Hallowmere, a dark, edgy historical fantasy series that teens won't be able to put down!

Ever since her parents died in the Civil War, Corrine's dreams have been filled with fairies warning her of impending peril. When she's sent to live at Falston Manor, she thinks she's escaped the danger stalking her. Instead the dreams grow stronger, just as girls begin disappearing from school.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Evocative historical fantasy.......2007-09-19

As the Civil war ends, Corrine's nightmare begins. Ever since her parents died, Corrine's dreams have been filled with faires warning her of danger. Her uncle sends her off to Falston Manor, in hopes of protecting her.

Instead the dreams intensify. She also finds some letters of forbidden love by a medieval monk who writes of his friendship of the fey. Mysteries surround the Manor. One of which has something to do with her. But who can Corrine trust? All she knows she needs to do something before Hallowe'en or else she might be the next girl who will be missing.

I LOVED this book! This story has a gothic feel complete with post Civil war atmosphere, fairies, and ancient love letters. Part historical fantasy and horror, the author sweeps the reader away in a very imaginative world. This is sure to please Holly Black fans.

I can't wait for the next book!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gothic fantasy.......2007-09-19

This is my new favorite YA gothic novel, hands down. The post-Civil War historical setting is wonderfully evocative, the story just throbs with gothic atmosphere, and the magic is so creepy and cool. Anyone who loves historical fiction, dark fantasy, or gothic novels with strong heroines, whether for YA or adults, should definitely read this one. I can't wait to start re-reading it

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Beginning To A New Series.......2007-09-17

Tiffany Trent's "In the Serpents Coils" is the first book in the "Hallowmere" trilogy. The book takes place in 1865, right after the Civil War, and the are many references to that. Corrine has recently lost both her parents and is sent to live with her Uncle. Corrine herself is recovering from a life threatening fever, and starts has disturbing dreams and seeing mysteries thing even while she is awake. When her curiosity gets the better of her, Corrine's Uncle sends her to a reform school for young ladies where the mystery only deepens. This book is a beautiful mix of historical fiction and fantasy. While trying to find her place in this new world, Corrine finds her perceptions of what is real and what is fantasy completely turned upside down. This is another great young adult book which would also appeal to many adults. I cannot wait for the 2nd book "By Venom's Sweet Sting" which is coming out in December.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Read for All Ages.......2007-09-06

Tiffany Trent has written an excellent historical fantasy. The characters are well developed and the plot moves along and keeps readers engaged. If you like fairies, magic, and monsters set in a post Civil War setting, this book is for you. I am looking forward to By Venom's Sweet Sting, the next book in the series.

    Product Description

The Ssethric peoples once extended their influence from horizon to horizon; they were masters of all they surveyed. From atop the coiled throne of Yahssremore, in what is now the Blessed Lands, they enslaved or exterminated numerous lesser races during millennia of slaughter. This dominance was squandered by arrogance and centuries of decadence, however, and the reptiles found themselves fleeing for their lives, into the swamps and jungles of the south. Now, in the fetid marshes of the Kraldjur Morass live the debased offspring of the once-vast Ssethregoran Empire. Fighting constant wars against the Elorii of Malfelen and the Altherian Republic, these scaly horrors seek to return to their rightful place as the overlords of Onara.

5 out of 5 stars So good you'd swear you were there in person.......2004-10-03

Choquette's book is the latest in the Arcanis series, and I gotta say they just keep getting better. This book deals with the rise and fall of a reptilian Empire, a must for anyone who's a fan of lizardmen, serpentmen and their ilk. The depth of detail in the narrative is fantastic - clearly this guy knows his reptiles, and he knows how to create entire civilisations from them.
The book is wonderfully laid out out, with descriptive historic narrative thats both humourous and awe inspiring in its complexity. You are introduced to the races, species and creatures of Ssethregore. You'll learn of magic and flora, and equipment and technology that clearly demonstrates a genuine knowledge of the sciences, which gives the book even more believeability (and according to the bio he's an actual herpatologist). The book is also dotted throughout with wonderful drawings and images to complete the experience.
If you already play the Arcanis games then shame on you if you dont buy this. If you havent experimented with Arcanis, then shame on you again. Buy this, its the perfect product for any D+D game.
P.S. This book is head and shoulders above Wizard's "Serpent Kingdoms", so if you only have money for one, get this one. I highly reccomend it.

The men and ships that he describes endured not one, but three successive encounters with the crushing embrace of the Serpent's Coil.

                      JACK-IN-THE-BOX

Jack Sutton has been on meds since third grade, when his mother came to his classroom and discovered his teacher had put him in a washing machine box.

Jack and his friends refer to the nurse's office, where they line up daily for their medications, as Club Meds. But Club Meds is no vacation spot -- it's what enables Jack and Mary, who have ADHD, and Sam, who suffers from epilepsy, to navigate the treacherous waters of Busby Memorial High School. So when major-league bully and Jack's longtime nemesis Chuck forces Jack to turn over his Ritalin, Jack is once again in a box, one that's far more frightening than a discarded packing carton.

The kids from Club Meds come to Jack's defense with a plan that's outrageous and dangerous, and a long shot at best. It will test their determination and their courage -- and it will change their lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars A great read for kids, parents, anyone........2006-06-29

A friend who's son has ADHD lent me this book. I read it in one sitting. "Club Meds" does for ADHD what "Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathan Lethem did for Tourette's Syndrome: we get a glimpse inside the head of someone suffering from a condition few of us can recognize or understand. Written from the perspective of Jack Sutton, an irreverent, realistic young teen dealing with the effects of going off his medication when the high school bully confiscates his Ritalin, which Jack has been taking since the 3rd grade.

A good book for kids with ADHD who need a peer character to look up to, and to remind them that they are not alone with their condition. A good book for parents who want a better understanding of what their "different" kids might be going through at school AND at home. A good book for anyone who enjoys a good story and interesting, well developed characters. A side note: my 54 year old husband woke up in the middle of the night, went down to the kitchen, found the book on the counter, and started reading while eating some cereal. He read a third of it before going back to bed, then finished it the next day. Now that's impressive!

For John "Jack" Sutton, life is made up of two things--when the meds he takes for ADHD are streaming through his system, and when they're wearing off. For as long as he can remember, he's taken medication at regular intervals throughout the day to help with his ADHD, otherwise known as Attention Deficit hyperactivity Disorder. Although there are still plenty of times when his mind wanders, or when he can't answer a direct question, or when he's in his own world and doesn't even realize that someone is speaking to him, these times are fewer and farther between when he's taking his Ritalin.

Jack has a pretty close-knit group of friends: Mary, who also has ADHD, and Sam, who takes medication to keep him from having seizures due to epilepsy. Along with a few other students at Busby Memorial High School, they make up Club Meds--the students who arrive at the nurse's office daily for their mid-day dose of medication.

Jack's life isn't only made up of Club Meds, though. There's also his mother, a stay-at-home mom who has the art of worrying down to an exact science. For someone who is a freshman in high school, Jack has very little freedom. He's not allowed to talk on the phone after eight p.m., especially to Mary, who for some reason is persona non grata to his mother. He doesn't go out to parties, or stay out late, or date. And when and if he does get in trouble, which happens a lot when he deals with his father, his punishment is to have his computer taken away. Since Jack's idea of light reading is a Mac manual, this is torture. For his father, a former jock who doesn't even truly believe in either ADHD or the need for medication, dealing with Jack is something he tries to avoid at all costs.

And then there's Chuck Williams, the bully of all bullies, who gets off on tormenting the members of Club Meds. For Jack, things get even worse when Chuck starts demanding he turn over some of his weekly medication for his own purposes. How is Jack supposed to deal with everyday life without his medicine? As things go from bad to worse, it's up to the members of Club Meds to come up with a plan to end Chuck's assault.

CLUB MEDS is a great, entertaining, quick read. I've been fortunate to read some of Ms. Page's previous releases in the adult mystery market, and have to say that the same fast-paced style is in play here. A great read about being different, tolerating cruelty, and having what's mentioned in the book as "a disability that no one can see."

My first reaction on taking delivery of this book was very positive. What an excellent and refreshing concept - to produce a guide book for Scuba Divers to a series of resorts owned by one company as opposed to a country or region. Perhaps the publishers will also consider something very similar for those fleets of live-board diving boats that operate under the same flag but are found dotted around the world's leading Scuba Diving destinations - such as Peter Hughes and the Aggressor Fleet. Just a thought.

Measuring 10" x 7" "Diving Club Med" comes in the well-established medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest Publishing of New York. As I know from experience, these particular publishers, set high standards and demand all contributing authors/photographers maintain those standards at all times. Little wonder they are a leading name in the USA for books such as this.

From beginning to end, the reader is treated to a well-presented format containing plenty of vital and relevant information all lavishly supported by high quality colour images and maps. Chapter One is a potted history into the Club Med concept and this is followed by the company's overall approach to Scuba Diving, their policies, procedures and regulations combined with the diving programmes and training courses generally available.

From Chapter 3 onwards we get down to cases and these include the Club Med facilities in Turks & Caicos, St. Lucia, Bahamas (Columbus Isle and Eleuthera), Mexico (Cancun, Playa Banca and Sonora Bay), French Polynesia and Martinique. The final chapter, however, is all about their very own ship "Club Med" and her sailing/diving itinerary. I didn't even know Club Med had a ship and with ports of call such as Les Saintes, St. Barthelemy, BVI, Marie Galante, Nevis & St. Kitts, St. Martin, Dominica, St. Lucia, Bequia, Barbados, Tobago and Tortuga (to name but some) this is clearly one means of reaching some very remote diving destinations where the local diving facilities may be anything from lacking to non-existent.

For those people who would like to consider combining their annual diving vacation with the overall holiday atmosphere for which Club Med is world-famous, this book is a must and is thoroughly recommended.
