* specifics of cycle touring in Britain
* background information for beginner bicycle tourers
Part II: The Journey
* split into 21 stages laid out in an innovative 4-page format

Book Description
obody ever listens to Daisy. Her father was chopping carrots. Her mother was talking on the phone. Her big sister was chasing her little brother around and around the kitchen table. So it was no surprise that no one heard where Daisy went, even though she told them. With humorous text and striking, bold illustrations, this book captures the frustration of a middle child trying to be heard over the noise of a well-meaning family.
Customer Reviews:
Squashed in the Middle With You.......2005-10-18
Daisy is a middle sibling with a problem. It's not that her older sister and younger brother and her parents aren't interested in her; however, they talk about her and even for her, but they don't listen to her! With all that talk about her, most of it negative, Daisy begins to doubt her own feelings. One day her friend Rosa invites her to stay over night. Not only does Daisy's mother not entirely listen to Daisy, but her siblings chime in as well:
"'She won't go anywhere without her stuffed duck,' said her brother. 'She'll come home in the middle of the night,' said her sister in her big know-it-all voice. 'No, I won't,' said Daisy. But nobody heard her. Maybe they're right, Daisy thought."
When Daisy just decides to accept Rosa's invitation, her family is too busy to notice. When the family finally finds her at Rosa's, they react in the same over-protective and condescending way, until Daisy lets out a big shout: "I'M NOT GOING HOME!" When her mother asks her why she has to shout, Daisy explains," Because I tell you things, but nobody ever listens to me." Suddenly (and inexplicably), the parents understand Daisy's feelings (though her brother and sister are just the same) and let her stay overnight at Rosa's. They even listen to her (even the brother and sister) the next morning when she comes home.
So, what's the message, if any, here? I think it's a caution to family members about the importance of listening to everyone, and not letting siblings overstep their bounds. On this level, the book works. However, there's no real solution shown for Daisy. Her shout slows the family's incessant talking long enough for her mother to ask her a direct question, and for Daisy to finally give a direct answer. The shout expresses the pent-up anger, and works in the short run, but the book doesn't really offer a long-term solution. It's almost as if it were Daisy's fault for not shouting sooner to get her family to finally listen to her. While not a major flaw, the book would have been more edifying had it presented more complex answers to a complex problem. Pat Cummings' bright illustrations (gouache, pastel, watercolor, and colored pencil) are bright and simple, and give a kind of in-your-face feeling that mirrors Daisy's home.
Nice story but falls a little short.......2005-05-07
It is nice to see a "real life" problem for younger children discussed in picture book format.
Even though there is no real "story" going on in this book - Daisy is a middle child whose family doesn't listen to her; she decides to spend the night at her friend Rosa's house; her family thinks she has gone missing and when they finally find Daisy and resolve to take her home Daisy finds her voice and her family starts to pay attention - young children will identify with Daisy's frustrations and find pleasure in the end result.
The author has taken care to show that despite Daisy's family's dismissal of her voice, they do care for her and are looking out for her best interests. Winthrop has also been careful to resolve the issue without making too much of a "storybook" ending out of it.
A nice read, but not a book with elaborate illustrations or story telling that will make them say, "Wow!". A good choice for libraries.

Have you ever played the "if only" game? Well, if only Ellie's potentially prize-winning pumpkin would gain 200 more pounds in time for the Rock River Pumpkin Weigh-In, and if only Ellie could lose 20 or so pounds herself, her life might be perfect. Well, at least it would be perfect enough to give her the courage to make friends with Wes--the cute new guy at school. She's well on her way to winning big on all counts when frost and pumpkin thieves begin to attack! The thing is, Ellie has the sass, humor, and smarts to be a winner--whether or not her pumpkin breaks the scales ... if only she would realize it. Smashing!
Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Ellie Morgan's life would be almost perfect if she could just get her potentially prize-winning pumpkin, Max, to put on about two hundred more pounds, and if she could lose twenty herself. With the extra weight, Max would be the shoo-in champion at the Rock River Pumpkin Weigh-In. Ellie could then become a famous pumpkin-growing personality and squash that obnoxious Cyril Pool once and for all. With a trimmer figure, Ellie would have the courage to approach Wes, the new boy in town and former president of the Agriculture Club at Gaithersville High.
But with unpredictable weather threatening Max, pumpkin thieves running rampant, and Sweet Corn Coquette contestants eyeing Wes, the pressure is great as Ellie seems ready to take on the world.
"Fast-paced and engrossing entertainment that startles the reader with its underlying strength." (Publishers Weekly, starred review)
"Skillful plot development and strong characterization are real strengths here. Ellie's perceptive, intelligent, and funny narrative keeps the story lively right up to its satisfying conclusion." (School Library Journal, starred review)

"Max"imum Fun.......2007-10-08
Joan Bauer, a Newberry Honor author for Hope Was Here, has another winner with Squashed. From the first sentence the reader is plunged into the tumultuous world of Ellie Morgan, and her giant pumpkin, Max. The fact that the giant pumpkin in her backyard takes up most of Ellie's time lends to the idea that she is not the average sixteen year old girl, but behind Max's 500 plus pound frame is a regular girl with all the challenges of high school. Ellie struggles with her weight, a father who doesn't support Max, and the death of her mother, not to mention Wes, the new kid at school who happens to love growing as much as Ellie.
Bauer's style allows for laughs, even when talking about serious issues, such as Ellie's most recent diet, which isn't going too well. Joan Bauer helps young adult readers to deal with their faults and through wisdom shared in Squashed, focus on the positives about themselves. Overall it's a very fun book, and one that I had trouble putting down. Squashed has 194 pages and is a relatively quick read, with a reading level of about twelve years old, though the interest level is higher, ranging from fourteen to all ages of adults.
Squashed.......2007-08-12
This is one of the funniest and one of the best written teen stories I've read in a long time! As a high school English teacher, I cannot wait to implement this story into my class this fall--right in time for our annual Fall Festival! How perfect!
Pumpkins and Life.......2007-04-24
Ellie's whole life is pumpkin growing. On the small patch of land in the yard of her home where she lives with her widower father, Ellie tries to grow giants big enough to win the town's annual pumpkin growing contest. The fall festival is the biggest holiday of the year in town, and even though Ellie is still a teenager, she has been entering the adult growing division for years.
The problem is Cyril, a nasty and mean-spirited grower who also aims to grow the town's biggest pumpkin and has taken the fair's first-place title for many years. Ellie always seems to be second place to this despicable man, who enjoys rubbing his victories in her face. This year, though, Ellie is more determined than ever. She is confident that Max, the biggest pumpkin she's ever grown, will be a champion.
That is, she is confident until she sees Cyril's giant.
Ellie continues to nurture her pumpkin while trying to do well in school, convince her father that growing pumpkins is important, and attempting to gain the attention of the new boy at school, the president of his former school's agriculture club. It is a stressful life for Ellie, but will it all be worth it?
I liked how Ellie was able to relate everything going on in her life to growing. She used the analogy to explain everything to the reader, which showed just how important it was to her. The characters in this story were really good. I liked the way they interacted with each other and stood up for each other. I especially liked Richard and the way he supported Ellie.
However, Ellie took everything too seriously and overanalyzed everything. If she were a real person, I don't know if anyone would ever want to be around her. It also bothered me that Ellie was constantly obsessing over her weight and then overeating. Someone strong enough to do all of the work it took to grow those pumpkins should have been strong enough to go on a diet, if her weight was such an issue to her.
Abagayle's review.......2007-02-02
I loved this book with all the excitement in it like when Ellie was catching those pumpkin thieves. There was also romance like when Wes (Ellie's crush) kissed her and she kissed him back. This book had many types of emotions throughout it.
One of my favorite parts of the book were when Ellie embarrassed Sharell in front of Wes. Another was when Richard (Ellie's cousin) brought over Spider. In my mind Spider reminded me of a street dog. It said that he had dirty ruffled fur and he had no teeth so he gummed everything. The last was when Max stole the first place ribbon away from Big Daddy and his grower Cyril Pool.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes books with action like when Ellie caught the pumpkin thieves, suspense like when Cyril's pumpkin is weighed, and some romance like when Wes kisses Ellie. This book had to be one of the best I ever read and I know it will be the same for you
Squashed by Joan Bauers.......2006-08-13
I picked up this book because I have enjoyed Bauer's previous books, and the cover design with a big pumpkin on it got my curiousity up. I wasn't disappointed. Ellie, the main character, is very lovable. She has faults, which she realizes, but also has good qualities, which she has more trouble realizing. Richard, her cousin, is a "partial baseball star," a sophomore who lives like he's a step away from the big leagues and relates everything back to baseball. Ellie's father is a motivational speaker, and has a winning line for everything. And then there's Wes, the new kid in town, who is a award-winning corn grower and immediately attracts Ellie's attention. So this cast of characters come together to try to convince Max, a giant pumpkin, that he can go all the way and win the annual pumpkin weigh-in. But unfortunately there's a competitor, Cyril Pool, who has won the past four years and has no intentions of handing the title over to a 16-year old. Adventures ensue, the characters grow along with the pumpkin, and the whole story is very relatable. I'd be surprised if you weren't cheering Ellie on as the competition draws nearer.

Book Description
Life, unfortunately, is rather short, the little storeroom of the brain doesn't have extensible walls and the greatest of thinkers seem to be among the dullest, and the lengthiest, of writers. Which is a pity, because your Prince, whether they call themselves President or King or Prime Minister, has almost certainly read Machiavelli. Your therapist is steeped in Freud, your divines in Augustine. Lawmakers take their cues still from Paine, Rousseau and Hobbes. Science looks yet to Bacon, Copernicus and Darwin. So, here are the few most used, most quoted, the most given, sources of the West. The books that have defined the way the West thinks now, in their author's own words, but condensed and abridged into something readable. And there's more. By compressing these books to a tenth or so of their original size it becomes possible to read the whole thing as a single narrative, as the story of Western Thought, the story of how we got where we are now. The last chapter is waiting to be written.
Customer Reviews:
Nice words, bad book.......2007-05-08
I like Hughes' idea--he makes reading philosophy really simple. He has a great website, and he's done a wonderful job of condensing the works of the ages into short, but thorough, readings.
This book, however, is a great disappointment. The print is terrible; every letter has a halo of spots around it. Your desktop inkjet printer can do a much, much better job.
My copy is not an anomaly either; I ordered two copies, one for me and one for a friend. Both are badly printed.
The margins are also too narrow, and the font is too small. This book looks very much like it was published on the cheap.
I do wish Hughes the best of luck with his writing. He's doing a great job. In fact, he's doing a wonderful job. I wish, though, that his publisher was as good as he is. I'm sending my copies back.

Book Description
Idjit Galoot has a problem. He escaped from his master's house for a brief romp around town, seeking out easy targets such as bitches in heat, fresh roadkill and unguarded garbage cans. When he returns to his house, the aged basset hound discovers that his master has packed up their belongings and moved to Florida without him. "Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed" is the story of Idjit Galoot's ne'er do well owner and his efforts to work his way back to the dog hat he loves. Along the way, Idjit's owner encounters Christian terrorists, swamp-dwelling taxidermists, carnies, a b-list poopie-groupie, bluesmen on the run from a trickster deity, and the Florida Skunk Ape.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome Truly Genius! .......2007-10-19
Smashed Squashed Splattered Chewed Chunked and Spewed is the best book I have read in a while. The off beat comedy is about a man and his best friend. A basset hound named Idjit Galoot. Idjit decides to run away a day before the main character and his mother move to Florida. With "stuffed" daddy in tow and cousin Denny they head for the new home. So begins a surreal adventure to Florida. Along the way meeting a almost un real cast of characters. I laughed and went through the book in record speed. The book itself keeps you speelbound and its very hard to put down. I recomend it highly. Definately check out Lance Carbuncle the man is a genious and I cant wait until the next book! Oh and I vote Idjit for president. The dog makes more sense than the current political nonsense in this country!
Amazing. :].......2007-09-28
I bought this book based just upon the title and cover and expected it to be bizarre. I wasn't disappointed. The author is obviously influenced by Kurt Vonnegut and Douglas Adams but doesn't seem to try to be them. I have to agree with the other reviewer who compared the book to Christopher Moore's stuff. It would seem that Mr. Moore and Carbuncle had a lot of the same influences. Smashed, etc., is the ultimate roadtrip book. I loved the dream sequences with the author and his dog and would have liked to see more of them. Oh well, maybe in the next book. I laughed out loud too many times while tearing through the book and sometimes could not believe how funny something so twisted could be. Thank you for the laughs, Mr. Carbuncle.
Delightfully twisted and superbly entertaining!.......2007-08-10
LOVED IT. Lance Carbuncle weaves a colorful tale of one man's travels in search of the love of his life - his dog. Page-after-page of absurdly sick but well-written mayhem kept me reading nonstop until I read the last word. Not lacking in dark humor, this book skirts the edge of good-lord-don't-go-there humor. But, it does go there, and the end result is hilarious and supremely entertaining. Smashed, Squashed, Splattered, Chewed, Chunked and Spewed is as much about the journey as the destination. If you like the twisted genius of Christopher Moore or the entertaining journey of Jack Kerouac's On the Road, you'll enjoy this read.
Anxiously awaiting the next Lance Carbuncle...

From the supplier: The workers' compensation residual market's share of the total workers' comp insurance was 21% in 1994, down from a high of 26.1% in 1993 according to the National Council on Compensation Insurance. The residual market's combined ratio was 116% in 1994, down from over 120% in recent years. Operating losses in 1994 totalled $500 mil, a substantial improvement from $2.2 bil in losses in 1989. The residual market's share will probably continue to decline because of the growth of alternative programs and self-insurance.
