My "Go To" book for knots.......2007-05-20
I bought this book in Escalante, Utah, when doing my first canyoneering excursion. I have seen many other books since, but this remains my favorite.
1) It has very clear pictures that make it easy to follow the instructions
2) As other reviewers have written, each knot has a little history blurb about it. Nice touch!
3) The book is organized logically - by use (boating, fishing, caving, etc.)
4) The book contains more knots than you could ever possibly want to know.
Highly recommend to someone looking for a "One Stop" knot book.
My Son the Sailor Loved This book.......2007-04-11
I bought this book for my son, who is a sailor and lives aboard his sailboat. He said it was great. I didn't see it, but for that application, it was just what he was looking for.

I liked this book because of the shear number of knots included in it. Some of the illustrations are a little hard to follow, but most of them I had no problem with. I also think the small blurb on the history of each knot is pretty cool.
A Good Knot Book.......2005-08-21
This book gives clearly illustrated instructions on tying many very useful knots. It organizes them under headings of Sailing, Hiking and Climbing in which they are most commonly used. The author includes the strength of most of these knots which describes how much they weaken the lines in which they are tied - often leaving less than 50% of the original strength of the line! Some knots do not hold well when bending (you will learn the definition of this term, as well as "hitch" and "knot") together two ropes of unequal size. Maybe you should use a different knot? Budworth has a suggestion!
This book is both useful and interesting thanks to the inclusion of a brief history of each knot. It did not change my life, but it did change how I secure my anchors! I recommend it!
A nice introduction to the world of knots..........2001-02-24
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas, and we've both come to like it very much. Neither of us are "knot aficionados", as it were, but wanted a book which would allow us to explore some knots we might need in our outdoor activities (horseback riding, camping, sailing, etc.) As the beginners at knotmaking we are, this book has proven to be excellent for us.
At the very beginning the book has a directory of the knots contained, listed by name, page number, application (sailing, caving, climbing, and so on), and description. In the introduction the book covers a number of topics: knotlore; terms, tips, and techniques; ends; and tips on using the book. In the main part of the book, each knot has a small photo of a finished knot, an explanation of the application of the knot, numerous diagrams showing the knot being tied, a description of the tying of the knot, and a brief history of the knot itself.
I really don't understand why some of the other reviewers feel so strongly about this book, as a neophyte to the world of knots, I found it more than adequate, and it served my needs well. And I find my husband returning to it again and again, as he slowly falls under the spell of knots, well on his way to becoming a true knot geek. If you're a beginner looking for a practical guide to knotmaking, this book will suit you well.

Outstanding little book!.......2007-09-27
This is a great reference for anyone doing beginner to intermediate knot tying in a wide range of fields. I bought it for nautical reference and teaching on a training vessel, but it covers climbing and other fields with equal aplomb. It's not a comprehensive reference, but it's VERY thorough for any practical use, and it covers some background, tools and theory as well. Great book. Small size (meaning small print... but easy to take with you). Very clean and clear images. Well worth adding to your library.
Most knots are clear and concise, but there are errors.......2007-05-26
Pg. 116 - Jug or Bottle Sling
Instructions are to "...take the bottom of the front loop and weave it through the crossings of the other two side loops." However the illustration shows the line passing under, not over the second crossing. This coupled with poorly worded directions in general made it very difficult to accurately recreate this knot. After several attempts however I was able to discern exactly what the author was defining as "Loop A" and "Loop B" in spite of the poorly labeled diagram.
In general this is a great book, but errors like this should have been rectified by a proof reading and the diagrams on some of the more complex knots could be better labeled. Placing an "A" at the top of a picture with no arrow to discern which loop is being referenced and labels no where near the intended loop they are meant to describe make for frustrating attempts the first few times you are trying to learn a new knot.
Still, I would recommend this book as a reference. For the most part it is well done. I would have ranked it higher but the mistakes in the diagrams lead me to give this a 3/5. Hopefully they revise the drawings in later editions to save other folks some frustration when learning the jug sling.

I've looked at a lot of knot books from people like Ashley, Budworth, and Pawson. This is easily one of the best! It's very user-friendly, with clear instructions and good drawings. Most of the knots are practical so it isn't cluttered with esoteric fancy knots that do nothing. My only caveat is a bit more could be said about pros and cons of various knots.

Superb info on knots and ropes!.......2004-08-28
This is the best book on knots for climbers available! It's also great for hikers and boaters. There is a lot of information on rope materials and construction (not just climbing ropes but all that are used outdoors). It also has a useful chapter on rope handling, from coiling to tossing, to help prevent tangles. And the selection of knots is large but not overwhelming, with helpful tips on why (or why not) to use a particular knot. Good photos and detailed written instructions make it easy to learn the knots (some knot books are rather confusing). This should be required reading!

This is the best knot book out for sailors and a great knot book for everyday users.
So, how many knots does one need to know to sail safely? Some say as few as three, but Budworth shows you how to tie over 60 nautical knots, each with step-by-step color instructions. He has an excellent introduction that covers history, tools, terms, material and construction of cord. Each of the diagrams has the knots history, application and a written instruction that 99% of the time is not needed. Budworth breaks down sailing knots into five sections: Stoppers, Loops, Bends, Hitches and Others. Finally, he gives you a glossary, a bibliography of numerous knotting manuals, and tells you how you can join `The International Guild of Knot Tyers". The only thing missing is a section on knot jokes.
Knot books don't get any better or simpler than this. If you are going to buy one book to learn to tie knots this is the one. Highly recommended

A good book of 70 of the most common knots........1998-08-24
Peter Owen has put together 70 of the most common knots and illustrated them quite nicely. The book uses line drawings to show how to tie the knots and provides a short historical and descriptive paragraph on each knot.
I felt more verbage should have been given in describing how the knots were tied, and the sections on Choosing and Caring for Rope were inadequite at best. To his credit, the illustrations Peter used were good enough to overcome the shortfalls in describing how to tie the knots. This book is a handy guide to tying common knots and knowing their uses, but is definitely not a complete guide to all knots.
None the less, as an editor for a Scouting Magazine, I still feel it is a book worth buying and I do recommend it.

This book doesn't waste your time. It has all the best knots, along with concise explanations of what they are good for and clean, easy-to-follow illustrations for tying them. I am a Wilderness Instructor for Outward Bound, and this is the book I chose for my students to use on course.
good, but missing pages.......2004-03-12
I liked that this book doesn't waste ink on real photos. The diagrams are clean and easy to follow. The concise descriptions of each knot are interresting and the rating system gives a quick summary. It's a great quick reference guide for the camper trailer, or glove box. However, I found my copy of this book to be missing pages 277-284, even though there are knots listed in the index for those pages. Also, it would have been nice if the authors had included some braids, mats, harnesses, etc.
Poorly Done--Far Shy of Expectations.......2004-01-20
One should expect an excellent work from two knots-savvy
authors collaborating on a book; sadly, this book is worse
in various ways than other Budworth books, and far short of
expectations.
General comments:
It's amazing that one has to HUNT down the explanation of
the knots-rating colored numbered dots. Their most brief
explanation is on the inside of an inner COVER page, before
the Introduction, with publishing information!
There's no explanation of how these ratings were made: who
decided and by what basis how "secure" or "strong" each
knot is?
It's bad that the small-format book (roughly 5.5"x6.5")
comes with needlessly small font & rating-symbols, and yet
leaves a great deal of empty space that ought to contain
better, more detailed explanation of the knots.
The illustrations are of poor quality, mostly, and there
are many errors. (One would think that after doing THIS
many books, Budworth would have things figured out!)
There's no indication of what contribution each author
made to the book. We've seen many Budworth books, and
their content is pretty much the same. Dalton is said to
be a research engineer and knots instructor to both scouts
and rescue personnel. One should expect much more in a
knots book from persons with such credentials.
It appears that only in one case does the book advise one
to moisten angling line when tying a knot--advice that is
common in books on fishing knots, and important(...)

This book will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about knots, and some things you didn't even know you needed to know. It's written by a man known throughout the World, and Charlottesville, as the Supreme-Ultimate God King of Knots: Jason Dalton. Honestly, it's very well written and easy to understand, with many full color illustrations that teach you what you need to know. Even if you think you know knots, buy this book and learn from the Master.
