Taking Inquiry Outdoors - And Liking Science Teaching.......2000-04-18
Chapters of Taking Inquiry Outdoors: Reading, Writing and Science Beyond the Classroom Walls are written by teachers who chose to teach young children specifically to avoid teaching science. These teachers reflect upon their experiences as their students' interests and needs prompted them to incorporate more and more science into their teaching. Experiences with the beauty and fascination of nature are contrasted with their memories of science classes. The chapters are written in a first person, reflective style which makes this book speak to and resonate with other teachers or teachers-to-be who are intimidated by science. The book addresses taking the initial steps toward teaching science as inquiry, linking to the community and incorporating reading in scientific endeavors. In addition, there are chapters written by science teachers of older children who learned important concepts about teaching science while participating in a project with the elementary teachers primarily represented in this book. This book is a must read for every preservice elementary teacher whether you hope to teach science or not. Those who are already teachers should read it for the inspiration and infusion of new, innovative ideas that could strengthen any teacher's work.

Confusing Title.......1999-06-13
This comprehensive volume is Monograph No. 18 of Flora Neotropica (1977). Monograph No. 8 of Flora Neotropica (1972) by the same author - equally comprehensive - is entitled "Costoideae (Zingiberaceae)." These two monographs are frequently confused.

Superior to other Brazil Travel Guides.......2007-01-27
I purchased this book, as well as a Fodor's Guide to Sao Paulo and Discovery's Insight Guide to Brazil. I have found this book to be more descriptive and detailed in identifying areas/places of interest for the tourist. The Insight Guide has a lot more photos, and is nicer to look at, but this book is far more informative and functional.
Excellant source for information traveling in Brazil.......2006-11-06
I suggest this for anyone traveling in Brazil.
OK, but............2004-10-19
Recently used this guide for a visit to Sao Paolo, Parati, Brasilia and Rio. I did appreciate the more functional approach (settling, exploring) compared to rough guide or lonely planet. Also, the intented audience appears to be a bit older / less backpack / more money, which worked out nice in this case (Brasil is cheap :-). The information appears to be fairly accurate, and did indeed help us book hotels and visit attractions.
However, not all was well. For Rio nightlife try to find other sources of info. One area where this frommers fails badly is maps. Not only do the maps contain errors - attractions drawn in at wrong locations - but the range / level of detail is way too limited. The lonely planet is much better in this regard (although that guide does have some major other problems, like shameless selfpromotion of other items in their stable)
Should be titled "A Portion of Brazil".......2003-06-18
I've enjoyed the other Frommer's Guides I've used, particularly the one for Costa Rica, so I ordered Frommer's Brazil online. I was quite disappointed to discover the book covers only a small portion of Brazil's geography. Not only is the sparsely inhabited interior not covered, the southern states, home to more than a million people and a vacation destination for hundreds of thousands of Brazilians and Argentines are not so much as mentioned. It's improper to title the book "Brazil" when it's really about a dozen or so major destinations.

Decent guide.......2006-12-18
Has all the basics you would expect. Definitely worth a buy - along with THe Partier's Guide to Rio (this has some of the other "must do/see" items like particular foods that you've gotta try).
too basic.......2003-12-05
The guide wasn't that helpful in defining our itenerary or discovering Rio. The guide only covers hotels and restaurants and the restaurants were either tourist traps or filled with other travelors... hard to get a taste of local tradition.

Book Description
Growing up male - funny, touching, and as unexpected as life itself!
This collection of finely crafted stories from the acclaimed author of Forgotten Fire zeros in on the moments of comic confusion and tender transformation that make up one boy's wild ride through childhood and adolescence. Whether it's struggling up a godforsaken mountain with other miserable campers, tossing aside all scruples to scramble to the top of the school social heap, searching for the true path to romantic love, or trying to meet the expectations of a father whose high standards seem impossible to live up to - these funny and affecting tales of triumph, humiliation, love, loss, competitive kissing, and laxatives will touch readers and have them laughing out loud as Will, a boy with an overactive imagination, grapples with "what it takes to be a man" and "what kind of man will I become?"

Short, Simple, and Sweet.......2006-05-26
A delightful read, I recommend this short novel to anyone who enjoys reading about the young human spirit. First French Kiss is unlike anything I have ever read before. The author describes the true nature and emotion of his memories, tying them together in a complete recollection of what adolescence is all about. Thoroughly descriptive, he writes his memories when he lived them, then analyzes them. His memories consist of tiresome camping, moving to a new home, his relationship among expecting peers, and his lion-hearted father. Bagdasarian does not write in a chronological order. This gives the audience a hint of the author's style and the fashion of how we reminisce - we think of an emotion, then an event that triggered the emotion. This book is called First French Kiss, because the first memory he shares with us is his first kiss with his 6th grade sweetheart. Other than that, there are no more kisses; I think the title had more of a capturing mechanism to it. As soon as I read the title, I wanted to know what it was all about. With witty satire, First French Kiss contains many humorous events and the confusion of growing up. Also touching on the mysteries of life, why things change, and death, this short book also explores the realm of curiosities of a child and young adult. Bagdasarian writes in a very conversational tone, which makes it much more enjoyable. I couldn't help myself from laughing out loud at times. He shows us his childhood; he doesn't tell it. With that said, I believe the author wrote this book because he wants to reach out, relate, and share experiences with us. He wants to tell us that growing up is not easy, and that obstacles will inevitably block us from our destination. He wants to tell us that we're not alone, because everyone is having the same triumphs and dilemmas that we are. We're in it together. That, and passing 9th grade geometry.
Amazon.com
Fledgling author Adam Bagdasarian surprisingly follows up his grim, highly lauded first novel Forgotten Fire with a series of humorous, autobiographical sketches about his childhood and adolescence from ages 5 to 20. Bagdasarian is at his funniest when commenting on the trials and torments of puberty, especially when it comes to the opposite sex. In the title story, sixth-grader "Will" (the thinly disguised author) discovers that French kissing doesn't just happen: "I tried to find a way to kiss her and breathe at the same time, but no matter where I turned my head, her nose was always there." And in "Going Steady" Will realizes that dating a seventh-grade girl is going to require diplomacy when she "handed me a small white stuffed unicorn with silver glitter on its horn ... as though it were a baseball signed by Willie Mays, and I took it as though it were a poison apple." Beyond dating drama, Bagdasarian's teen self also explores the idea of old age and death. In "A Short Life," he melodramatically fantasizes a lump on his head is a tumor and he will probably die before seeing Europe, and in the more serious "My Tutor," he is moved to tears by an aged geometry teacher who can no longer remember, let alone teach, familiar proofs. By turns witty, ridiculous, and poignant (the stories about Bagdasarian's much beloved father are among the more touching pieces) First French Kiss is a short, sweet collection that teenagers of all ages will read with pleasure and recognition. (Ages 13 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

from one teen to another.......2007-04-06
This book is so right about every thing that happens. Will's first "french" kiss is so realistic it is almost scarey
I really recomend this book to parents because it tell or shoshow dramatic the teen years are in the present day. Every feeling that Will feels is so relatable to what us teens feel when that event happens to us. There is this one par when he is trying to dump this girl that he really was not into in th first place. He must try three times before he can dump her. I read that feeling like I could never do that , but the week later I myself ended up doing the samething myself! :-)
at first unorganized, but ties itself together.......2004-07-15
"First French Kiss and other Traumas..." definitely had its moments. Throughout these excerpts from the writers youth, he tells entertaining stories, but in a random and unorganized style. While reading the book, i was entertained, but at the same time i was puzzled as to why he was choosing which story to tell, and the order he chose to arrange the stories in. However, within the last two stories, the reader engaged me and made me feel like i understood everything he was going through. With the death of his father, the most captivating scenario he described in his memoir to his father was his father vs. him AND his brother in an arm wrestling contest. That scenario captured the relationship he had with his father: the stereotypical (charming none the less) father-son relationship where the father is a big strong man and the son looks up to him. this book will have you make you want to cherish your youth years. it is truley a gem.
Best Book.......2004-07-15
When I read the first few pages of this book...i loved it! It was so funny and I was sooo looking forward to reading the rest. As I was reading the rest I couldn't put it down. It wasn't just witty. It was written beautifully. I cried so many times. Will is soo sweet in this book. And I loved it! This book makes you think so much. It puts a smile on my face everytime I hear the name will now... Its great. I recomend to anyone
Caley's review.......2002-12-05
My friends both recommended this book and I really thought it was both funny and amusing (yes...they are different things). This story of a boy's life is full of many anecdotes, some insightful, all funny. I really recommend
The Joys of Teenage Trauma.......2002-09-23
Adam Bagdasarian offers up several short, wonderful tales of the trails, indecision, fears and strange motivations that make being a teenager such a strange and magical time in anyone's life. Whether you are a teenager going through those times or an adult who can now look back at them in humor, "First French Kiss" is a delightful read. With stories depicting such common problems as social acceptance, camping, and an overactive imagination, the memories just come flooding back. Every reader will find at least one of the short vignettes that will speak directly to them. For me it was the experience of Little League, Going Steady, and, of course, that First French Kiss. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip back to my teenage years and the traumatic (but now humorous) times. A fun read for teenagers and adults.

A thoughtful, passionate, entertaining romance novel........2002-03-24
Donna Schaff's Just One Kiss is an entertaining romance novel of a man and a woman who simply don't care for each other in the beginning - but with passing time and new challenges, each finds the courage love again. At different times warm, contradictory, or philosophical, Just One Kiss is a thoughtful, passionate, highly recommended presentation of stubborn personalities and heartfelt sentiment.
You've done it again!!.......2001-08-21
Once again Ms. Schaff has done it again. As with her first book "Priceless" everytime I put it down I was drawn back to it. I just had to find out what was going to happen next. I found the non-rushed pace of the "budding romance" refreshing. I mostly enjoyed the author's sense of humor. Although I am not a big reader of romance I most definitely will continue to look for Ms. Schaff's work and am eagerly awaiting her next venture.
Another Winner by Donna Schaff.......2001-07-30
Ms. Schaff has done it again! Like her first book, Priceless (which was a RITA finalist for Best First Book), this is one you can't put down. Just One Kiss is wonderful. This author has a magical story-telling ability; she delivers adventure and passion in a superbly paced, emotional tale of two people, each with their own painful secrets. They don't like each other in the beginning; they clash, they try to out-manuever each other, yet they're destined to become lovers. Ms. Schaff creates heart-breaking, memorable characters who play off one another beautifully, with wit and humor and deep emotion. In my opinion, she's one the best historical romance writers in the genre. I can't wait for the next book!
She's done it again!.......2001-07-25
Absolutely fantastic! Ms. Schaff's first book "Priceless" was wonderful, and she has definitely exceeded my expectations in "Just One Kiss"! Ms. Schaff's ability to effectively build tension, anxiety, and excitement culminated in the best historically-based romance novel I have ever read. I finished this book in one day because it is so hard to put down. Now I'm reading it a second time and I am thoroughly enjoying every word. I cannot wait for the next one! Keep writing Ms. Schaff, for you certainly have that talent.
