Book Description
2001... What better year for a foreword written by Sir Arthur C. Clarke? The venerable master of science fiction and long-time resident of Sri Lanka kicks off a second exotic feast of literary adventure that transports both the reader (vicariously) and the traveler (via practical guide) around the world. Hot on the heels of the critically-acclaimed volume 1, the 24 tales contained in volume 2 again raise the bar for the very best in travel writing. The stories by renowned writers are complemented by detailed illustrations of their subjects and helpful photographs, as well as thoroughly researched guidebook information.
Uncover the mysteries of Kafka's Prague; tarry on the docks of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row; scurry with the street urchins of Charles Dickens's London; join Raymond Carver for a quiet cup of coffee in Washington; heckle a thespian at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre; swing a scythe with the fieldhands in Leo Tolstoy's Russia; get away from it all at Walden's Pond with Henry David Thoreau; dream of the future with Arthur C. Clarke; and experience other memorable highlights from the world of literature.

Follow in the footsteps of notable writers.......2001-08-11
Use literature and literary figures to follow in the footsteps of notable writers and their settings with the aid of a title which covers many destinations, from the Prague of Kafka to Steinbeck's California setting for Cannery Row. Add first-person reflections on the literature containing the settings and you have an excellent take-along or travel planner.
A superbly presented compendium.......2001-02-11
Literary Trips: Following In The Footsteps Of Fame is a superbly presented compendium of observations, adventures, and travels of and by some of the best loved writers as they trekked around the world. A magnificent armchair travelogue, Literary Trips is divided as the world is: Africa to Australasia (Paul Bowles, T. E. Lawrence, Rohinton Mistry, Bruce Chatwin); North America: West (Malcolm Lowry, The Beats, D. H. Lawrence, Garrison Keillor and Sinclair Lewis); North America: East (Tennessee Williams, Margaret Mitchell and Tom Wolfe, Ayn Rand, Mark Twain, Elizabeth Smart); Caribbean and Latin America (Ernest Hemingway, Ian Fleming and Noel Coward, John Stephens and Frederick Catherwood); Great Britain and Ireland (W. B. Yeats, Jane Urquhart and the Bronte Sisters, A. A. Milne, Agatha Christie and Jane Austen); Continental Europe (Knut Hamsun, The Lost Generation, Mary Shelley). Highly recommended for both school and community library collections, Literary Trips is enhanced for the reader with a section on biographies and a "user friendly" index. A novel and original feature of this publication is that any of the chapters are available as separate, individual e-texts and downloadable from the GreatestEscapes.com website.
Literary Trips: Following in the Footsteps of Fame.......2000-09-19
This is a book to savor in a cigar lounge...in the corner of a jazz club...in front of a softly crackling fire at home. Or in a hammock under a royal palm in the deep, deep south.
I started out by nestling with the book into our oversized, down-filled sofa - and ended up traveling through one of the best reads of my life. Several times, I startled my husband with cries of "No kidding...Wow...I didn't know that...Ohmigod..." as I discovered new places in the hearts of my favorite authors. And delved into the lives of others I knew little about.
Literary Trips probes into the past, yet is formatted for the present. We're all used to reading in chunks now - short, self-contained sections that are complete, independent modules. And this book is totally "today" in that respect. Each chapter, written by a different person, is a complete story - gift-wrapped with its own special signature. Each has its own flavor, its own style, its own finds. Every writer has unearthed amusing tidbits and lively tales that add richness and depth to well researched and beautifully written prose.
The book is also an excellent travel guide for following in those famous footsteps. Each module contains a practical reference section listing hotels and other stomping grounds of famous feet ("Literary Sites"; "Literary Sleeps"). Each section also describes how to get to those grounds and provides useful tips and background information.
My favorite parts are the little surprises throughout. For example, did you know that: § Hemingway dedicated his Nobel Prize for literature to the patron saint of the basilica in Santiago de Cuba? § Ian Fleming wrote the James Bond novels at Goldeneye, his home in Jamaica, and named 007 after the local author of a book on birds? § When Ayn Rand was writing Atlas Shrugged, which took 12 years, she didn't leave her apartment for an entire month?
Another of the book's delightful dimensions is a smattering of recipes that could form a menu for a literary memorial party. You could honor D.H. Lawrence with his dandelion wine; Hemingway with double daiquiris; Mistry with Dhansak; and Sinclair Lewis with his "Sinful Christmas Cookies".
I'm always looking for inspiration for my own writing, and Lit Trips provides it on many fronts. Much of it comes from seeing so many authors "under one cover" - an excellent way to compare styles, to link lives, to see how they made their magic. But I was no less inspired by the talent of the book's contributing writers.

Good Book.......2007-03-08
Really liked many if the kit designs. The book pointed out many items that I now have added to my kits. If you are makeing a small survival kit, car kit or the world is going to hell kit, this is the book for you. Good Job.
Outstanding book of ideas for survival kits.......2007-03-04
This is a book that I highly reccomend. I don't loan this one out because I might not get it back...I hold this book in such high regard :)
I am a preparedness junky. I thought I had some great background in making kits for all sorts of situations. Even I can learn when info is presented well.
BUILD THE PERFECT SURVIVAL KIT opened my eyes to many ways of kit making and stocking that I hadn't thought of.
This is a book you should have in your library.

Practical but not for the expert.......2007-01-08
Given the nature of some of the previous reviews it's doubtful some actually even took the time to read Build the Perfect Survival Kit
With that said, the book overall is a practical resource and idea generating report. The resources listed in the back of the book and its recommended reading list is the books strength but for the expert you might not find anything new in there and with at least one dead link: Survival Inc. But as a compliment to your survival library one or two ideas might be gleaned.
The book is replete with photos but Color photos would have been better as it is hard to discern what some of the items that you are actual looking at (especially for the beginner.)
The authors preference for suppliers are sites like CAMPMOR and Brigade Quartermasters to name a few. The book is redundant but is purposely and practically written that way but YAWN I was looking for something more informational.
The survival tips are few but again it was purposefully not designed for that.
There are some tidbits of survival wisdom within the pages as the author is an experienced survival expert, some idea generating tips for assembling equipment like making a survival stove with a NUWICK candle, food, water, shelter; all the basics. So, it would be wise to assemble at least a small kit for your car or truck but as in the book -- building a kit is a process best done slowly as your budget allows. And having some equipment on hand in an emergency just makes sense. Preparedness.
The book does not include everything that you might need or want in your kit and had some glaring drawbacks.
For example, waterproofing is talked about but the author on page 91 placed separately in small zip lock bags his Tylenol and alcohol pads to
go into the main compartment of plastic medical kits carrying case; they (Tylenol and pads) are already waterproofed!
I gave it 4 stars for effort and as a resource guide.
Definitely for Gadget Geeks (like me).......2007-01-03
This is a cool book for those that are interested in gadgets and survival in general. I would have liked more photos (especially more close-ups). A full-color edition would really put this book over the top. All in all, if you enjoy this kind of thing, this is a very interesting and enjoyable book. The book included good, up-to-date lists of where to come up with the various items that the author uses and reviews.
It's in the name........2006-10-06
The phrase Survival Kit is in the title of this book, and that is exactly what is presented. Survival techniques are not the focus of this book, but assembling survival kits for various situations. In that regard, this book is extremely thorough giving many examples of assembling survival kits for just about every scenario be it personal, vehicle, boat, etc. He also provides many examples of the different survival tools available and where you can obtain these tools. There aren't an abundence of survival techniques in this book, but I don't think that was the author's goal. It's also a pretty dry read and when the author reveals what he carries with him at all times, I thought he was joking. This guy carries on 3 keychains something like 2 micro flashlights, 2 knives, a multitool, metal aspirin container, fire tinder in another aspirin container, and about 4 different tools for fire starting. And, that's just what I remember off the top of my head. He carries this stuff around all the time. While I find that completely ridiculous, the kits and all the tool recommendation make this book rate high for what it is. A guide to assembling survival kits. For actual techniqes, I'd go with another book.

Like David Almond's 1998 Whitbread-winning Skellig, this powerful, eerie, elegantly written novel celebrates the magic that is part of our existence--the magic that occurs when we dream at night, the magic that connects us to family long gone, the magic that connects humans to the land, and us all to each other. As Kit's grandfather puts it, "the tales and memories and dreams that keep the world alive."
It seems fated that 13-year-old Christopher Watson, nicknamed Kit, would move to Stoneygate, an old English coal-mining village where his ancestors lived, worked, and died. Evidence of the ancient coal pit is everywhere--depressions in the gardens, jagged cracks in the roadways, in his grandfather's old mining songs. A monument in the St. Thomas graveyard bears the name of child workers killed in the Stoneygate pit disaster of 1821, including Kit's own name--Christopher Watson, aged 13--the name of a distant uncle. At the top of this high, narrow pyramid-shaped monument is the name John Askew, the same name of Kit's classmate who takes the connection between this monument and life--and death--very seriously.
The drama unfolds as the haunted, hulking, dark-eyed John Askew draws Kit and other classmates into the game of Death, a spin-the-knife, pretend-to-die game that he hosts in a deep hole dug in the earth, with candles, bones, and carved pictures of the children of the old families of Stoneygate. Kit the writer and Askew the artist belong together, Askew keeps telling him. "Your stories is like my drawings, Kit. They take you back deep into the dark and show it lives within us still.... You see it, don't you? You're starting to see that you and me is just the same." Are they, though?
Kit's Wilderness conjures a world where the past is alive in the present and creeps into the future--a world where ancestral ghosts and even the slow-changing geology of the landscape are as tangible as lunch. Powerful images of darkness exploding into "lovely lovely light" filter throughout the story, as Almond boldly explores the dark side and unearths a joyful message of redemption. (Ages 11 and much, much older) --Karin Snelson

Customer Reviews:
Surprisingly Good Book for both Young Adults and Adults!.......2007-03-16
David Almond's book was assigned to my juniors for their outside reading assignment. At first, it took me a little while to get accustomed to the author's style of writing but once I got into Kit's Wilderness, I got hooked by the story, the creepiness, suspense, and storylines. Kit Watson is a young man who moves to Stoneygate and gets involved with a bunch of his peers and a strange game called death. Of course, it's only a game but is it? Kit and his new friends are involved in this game. Kit's grandfather recalls stories of his youth and the stories of his past as well as the ghosts of Stoneygate. I found it fascinating that Kit and his friends have this morbid curiousity in contacting their dead ancestors or trying to experience death in this bizarre game.
Slow Start.......2007-02-18
Christopher Watson, nicknamed Kit, is thirteen when his grandmother dies and he and his parents go back to the old mining community of Stoneygate to live with his grandfather. There Kit meets Allie Keenan, the girl who protect him and drives him crazy, and John Askew, a loner most other kids avoid. John is drawn to Kit, though, telling him that their lives are connected, that the two of them are alike. He tells Kit to look at the monument to children who died several generations ago in the mines, and Kit finds that the top line of the monument reads "John Askew, aged thirteen." The bottom line reads "Christopher Watson, aged thirteen." At first Kit thinks that this coincidence means nothing, but then he starts to see the ghosts of the dead children. He writes a story with characters who seek him out in his dreams and leave him feeling they are just a little too real. Is Kit communicating with the dead? Or is everything just in his imagination?
There were some great things about this story. I liked the supernatural aspect; it worked really well. I liked the relationships Kit had with his grandfather and with Allie. I also liked the ending of the book. The beginning, though, was very slow. It took me about twenty pages to get into the story, instead of being hooked right from the beginning.
GREAT BOOK!!!.......2006-03-03
This book is great. It is about kids that play a game that no one would ever imagine. It is very interesting and I did not want to stop reading it. I definately recommend it to anyone who dosent enjoy reading or even people that do.
Original and atmospheric plot.......2005-09-12
This is one of the most amazing young adult novels I've ever read, and I sincerely hope that it becomes a classic one day. It's narrated by a very imaginative kid named Kit who recounts his adventures in an old mining town called Stoneygate. After his grandfather tells him stories of the history of the mines, Kit begins to "see" children from the past who died in the pit. Are the ghosts real? It's never really clear, just as the ghosts themselves are not clear, flickering at the edges of Kit's vision. It ultimatley doesn't matter. This is not a ghost story, but a testimonial to how certain places can retain an atomosphere from the past, in this case the old mines. Almond uses magical realism to make this very convincing. The images of the ancient children in the pit are not too detailed, challenging the reader's imagination to supply the details.
The only reason I didn't give it a five star rating is because the writing isn't as accessible as, for example, Harry Potter. This book isn't for everyone. Only kids who can appreciate imagery and subtleness will want to read it. They are the lucky ones.
Kit's Wilderness.......2005-06-10
"What must he give us?"
"Life."
"What do we promise him?"
"Death."
A book about kids from a coal-mining town playing a game called "Death". This mysterious game takes place in a cave, away from adults. A game where the victim "dies", then comes back from with many "exciting stories" from "death". The characters in this story always seem lost. Each and everyone of them have troubles and conflicts to deal with. The history of town is filling Kit, the main character, with questions and curiosity.
Who would enjoy reading this book? I think this book is great for anybody ages 12+. Not that anybody younger can't read this book, but it contains situations that are more mature; situations about growing up that are meant for older readers. Also situations about life and death.
This book was written by David Almond, an excellent author. But I think his book "Skellig" is the best.

Excellent.......2007-03-22
I'm a WFR working towards WEMT and a geography student. I've worked in a number of remote wildernesses and disaster areas in a variety of situations and I've found this book to be practical, insightful and a good companion to the professional. I hope they continue to come out with new editions.
Excellent information and easily understood........1999-05-23
Anyone who does any backpacking, remote travel, or other wilderness activities will find this book very useful.
The advice is excellent and the improvised techniques are important in wilderness situations when equipment is very limited.
The size is small enough to fit in a first aid kit, backpack, etc.
The book is well worth the cost and could the most valuable item in your first aid kit.
It is also a recommended book for several local hiking groups.
EXCELLENT ! The book has paid for itself many times over ........1999-01-23
I am a field medic with the Michigan Army National Guard. I was so impressed with this book that I took it in to the armory, passed it around, and got seven of my fellow medics interested enough to buy the book. I keep a copy of the book in my medical bag for both reference and training purposes. When I am out in the field with the grunts (ifantry troops )I try to give a class or two on first aid. Some day I might be the patient. The book is easily worth three times its retail price.
Search and Rescue volunteer, learned lots from this book........1998-09-16
I am a search and rescue volunteer and I have learned a lot from this book, with the help of Survival Instructor Fred Coring with the CHP. Anyone who likes the wilderness and/or travels a lot should get this book and keep it with them all the time.
