These coloring books are excellent!.......2002-06-11
The Dover Coloring books are all excellent! They are also an awesome value! We own and use over 20 of these coloring books for history and science. They are extremely detailed and educational, but even my 6 year old loves to color them! This book is good for its description of the rocks and minerals, but lets face it, coloring rocks isn't as exciting as going out and finding them. My son loves to color these while I am reading to him about the pictured item!

*Jewel-like Crayons Transform Birthstone Coloring Book*.......2006-02-08
With brand-new jewel-like crayons, you'll need the perfect coloring book and what could be more appropriate than James Janol's "BIRTHSTONE COLORING BOOK? Even those who've never paid attention to birthstones will be intrigued by Janol's facts about gemstones that embellish these pages. Myths & legends will be of equal interest to children /&/ adults. Everyone will benefit by having on hand a guide to gems with good color photographs; a search in amazon.com will help you there. I 'gave' three stars because of all my coloring books this one has the fewest pages
On the back cover a jester is juggling three brightly colored gems. Inside, the text begins: "Long ago, people believed that dragons made their beds of jewels." What an extravagant thought that is! Reviewer mcHAIKU is feeling frugal & thinks you'll get "far more than your money's worth" and some interesting LORE as well ~ ~ by spending an afternoon with THE BIRTHSTONE COLORING BOOK.
Awesome coloring book........2000-07-27
When I bought this book, I didn't expect much. But, when it came I was astonished! It has all 12 birthstones and a whole lot more. Each page tells what the color of the gem is and also has a sentence or two telling about the folklore. With me being a rock collector, I loved this book. The information would be helpful to anyone. If they believed in that kind of stuff. For $3.50 I certainly got more than what I payed for!

Intended for curious adventurers whose travel budgets are a tad shy of luxury, Fodor's UpClose London does an admirable job of sharing enough information "to help you plan your trip ... without nailing you down." The authors, self described "writers and poets, slackers and straight arrows, and travel writers and journalists," start with the basics (air travel and rail passes, money, telephones, where to lay your sleepy head, etc.) but waste no time in directing you to tours, galleries, pubs, theaters, patisseries, shopping, sports, and music--all reached via the ever-navigable Tube (London's subway system).
If you don't have a local friend to accompany you on your treasure hunts and explorations of Olde London Towne, UpClose London is your second-best companion whether you're staying for a week or a year. Restaurant and hotel reviews are arranged by price, and the write-ups offer the inside skinny. In the mood for a traditional British meal? For less than £10 you can eat at the Quality Chop House, which "still serves large portions of hearty British grub like eggs, bacon, and chips," but also offers fare that "is almost a parody of the traditional: Bangers and mash becomes Toulouse sausages with mash and onion gravy." Need to know where to shop for secondhand clothing, paraphernalia for left-handers, or inexpensive furniture? You can find that out, too, by perusing the information in chapter 7.
Although UpClose London gives you the goods on top-rated attractions, the real focus is on helping you experience the "heart and soul of London" off the well-beaten tourist track. From the introduction through guide's end, you'll find gentle encouragement to venture out of your comfort zone: "Sit at a table if you want privacy; better, help prop up the bar, where no introductions are needed, and new acquaintances are quickly made." It's probably the best travel advice you'll ever get. --Heidi Robinson

Customer Reviews:
You're going to LOVE BRITAIN! .......2004-09-23
I've spent a year in England and have made >30 visits all together.
Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!
Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide
MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for pubs, hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the underground and the double decker buses. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the city centre. When you get to be an old London hand, remember that the classic Londoners guide will always be an A to Z (zed) map and guide. If you want to go a bit beyond the central core of the city (perhaps to Windsor, Hampton, or further away) you really need the proper AtoZ to be able to find exact routes and streets.
Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!
Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.
Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.
Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)
Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.
Great travel guide, but poor maps.......2000-07-02
The Upclose travel guides are my favorites, but their maps really leave something to be desired. If you want to explore a city without spending a fortune, these guides are for you.

This wonderful book revolves around a few delightfully named characters: Summer, Uncle Ob, Aunt May and Cletus Underwood. After being passed among relatives, Summer joins her aunt and uncle and marvels at the couple's deep love for one another. But after Aunt May dies, Summer and Uncle Ob are brought together in their struggles to come to terms with the death. Cletus, a neighbor boy, comes along to help provide an answer. This simple and sweet story, which won the Newbery Medal in 1993, is injected with just the right touches of humor and mysticism.
Book Description
When May dies suddenly while gardening, Summer assumes she'll never see her beloved aunt again. But then Summer's Uncle Ob claims that May is on her way back--she has sent a sign from the spirit world.Summer isn't sure she believes in the spirit world, but her quirky classmate Cletus Underwood--who befriends Ob during his time of mourning--does. So at Cletus' suggestion, Ob and Summer (with Cletus in tow) set off in search of Miriam B. Young, Small Medium at Large, whom they hope will explain May's departure and confirm her possible return.
Customer Reviews:
Great book, heavy subject matter.......2007-09-27
This story is about a young girl who loses the closest thing she had to a mother and how she grieves. The book is very well written, obviously, as it is a Newberry winner. It really shows the stages of emotion that Summer, the main character goes through and helps children to understand how to hang on to hope. For children that do not have many ideas about death, the book may seem pretty uneventful since a lot of the pages are simply filled with Summer's thoughts about losing May. For children that maybe have experienced a loss and are ready to grieve or children that want to know more or are concerned about death (which they do need to learn about sometime), this book is a beautiful story about accepting loss and choosing to live life day by day, knowing you will keep the memories, but that not all hope is lost.
Missing May.......2007-03-16
The title of this book is Missing May. This book takes place in West Virginia in the mountains. The characters live in a trailer. The main characters are May, Ob, Cleatus, and Summer. In this story Summer's parents die.
Summer gets passed from aunt to aunt. Then finally Ob and May took her. Then May died in her garden.
Ob and Summer had a hard time dealing with May's death.
summer thought that Ob would die too. Summer's friend Cleatus had came to live with Ob and Summer. I would give this book four out of five stars because it was a little bit confusing but evrything else it was great. I recommend people who like hard but also kinda easy books to read Missing May.
Missing May.......2007-03-16
In the book Missing May, Summer and her Uncle Ob are devastated after Aunt May died. Summer is filled with thoughts of her. Cleatus, a friend of Summers', is trying to help her remember May in a good way. While Ob is searching for a friend who can help him talk to May. But, Ob is still focused on Summer. So, in the end Ob, Summer and Cleatus go to Putnam County to see if Ob can speak to May again. Ob lost hope when they couldn't find what he was searching for.
I gave this book four stars because, in the beginning I couldn't understand the characters. Later on in the book it got into more detail. The ending was sad. But, I loved this book!

Beautiful!.......2007-03-10
"Missing May" is the most beautiful book I've ever read. I call it my "Happy Book." Whenever I feel sad, I read it, and it lifts my spirits. Since first reading this book several years ago, I've been searching for another book as fulfilling as "Missing May," a book filled with love, hope, wonders, sadness and joy. In the back of my mind, I'm hoping Ms. Rylant will provide another book like this one for myself and others who so love "Missing May."
horrible death missing may.......2006-11-28
I recommend this book to boys and girls. This is a situation that is pretty common. Having someone die in your family is very upsetting. If this situation ever happened to you this book would be good for you because, then you could relate this story to yourself. I also recommend this book because; it is very interesting how this family lives after this tragedy. I would like to read another book by this author because, she is very descriptive. I enjoyed this style of writing because, the author is very specific and worded the story very well and it was easy to understand. No, this book wasn't a page-turner but it made me kind of anxious at some parts but it was mostly at a slow pase. The plot was really believable and this could have really happened. I actually know someone that this situation has happened to them. That is what I think of Missing May.

Customer Reviews:
Terrific read! .......2007-07-29
Well, what a gem this turned out to be. I almost passed over it in the bookstore because the cover art seemed a little blah. Turns out you really CAN'T judge a book by it's cover! I actually didn't notice that this book was the second in a series until I was at home and settling down to read it. Fortunately, this book can be read just fine as a stand alone.
I am very impressed with the quality of writing. Good suspense is so hard to find...especially in the Christian market...so it was with great joy that I read well past my bedtime (and all common sense) to finish it up. The characters are likable and the spiritual message is conveyed with care and conviction.
My only complaint (and it's a small one) is that it takes Dani a ridiculously long time to figure out Will isn't the reporter he claims to be. That got on my nerves after a while but not enough to ruin the book....or even lower my rating.
Pick this one up right away, you won't regret it. Now, I'm off to buy the first in the series...
Simply amazing!.......2006-07-06
I loved the first book in this series and this one did not let me down! This was a wonderful, romantic Christian suspense novel.
Will and Dani are great characters that you truly want to get to know. I really like how Will developed and thought that was a great addition to this book. Definitely a close look at how to develop into a Christian.
Take the time to read this entire series - you will be glad you did!
Loved it!.......2006-06-08
Couldn't put it down! I have a love/hate relationship with writers that get you so into the story that you panic when the characters panic, etc. Worse yet is when you cannot put it down...you try to rationalize with yourself that it will still be there in the morning (it's 3am and you have to get up at 6am) and that it won't change if you close the book for a few hours of shut eye.
Loved it! I own/have read every book Susan has written. I have loaned several out and have had to purchace replacements because no one wants to give them back!

Great suspense, but it was Will & Dani who stole my heart!.......2006-05-06
Dannette (Dani) Lundeen is a Search and Rescue worker who is more than capable of handling herself in difficult situations. Will Masterson, Homeland Security agent currently undercover as a reporter, is immediately impressed by her.
Dani however, does not think very highly of reporters, so Will has an uphill battle on his hands to get past Dani's defenses. But when Dani begins an independent search for a missing teenage girl in the woods near the Canadian border and runs into Will, also looking for the same girl, she wonders why a reporter is so determined to help with the search. And Will is bound to keep the truth from her.
Dani & Will quickly found a special place in my heart. Their personal & spiritual journey's were ones I recognized in my own life. Will is trying so hard to learn how to be "God's man." And Dani thinks she has a solid relationship with the Lord, until she begins to realize that there are some areas of her life she has not really trusted Him with.
Susan does a wonderful job weaving spiritual truths into a suspenseful storyline.
Another thriller by Susan May Warren.......2006-03-28
Escape To Morning is a wonderful book full of intrigue and danger and romance. Living on the Canadian border as I do, brought this book to life for me.......I could picture Fadima running though the woods with Will and Dannette tracking her!
What a wonderful story. It is a must read! Way to go Susan.

Book Description
In this delightful new "tale of dark secrets, mysterious men, and heiresses in distress,"* Louisa May Alcott, the beloved author of Little Women, is cast in the role of amateur sleuth-investigating crimes more heinous than anything she can imagine in her "blood and thunder" romances.
Customer Reviews:
Intriguing New Series.......2004-09-01
In this first book of a promising new series, Louisa May Alcott, author of Little Women, tells readers of a time in her past when she helped solve a murder mystery. Shortly after going to a tea party where her friend, Dorothy Brownly Wortham, acts strangely, Dorothy is murdered. Dorothy had told Louisa she wanted to speak to her, but was killed before she had a chance to. Louisa is determined to find out how and why Dorothy was murdered.
This was an extremely well written, well researched book. Louisa really came to life as a character, as did the rest of her family, especially her mother, Abba. The time period also came to life through the book. The mystery itself was well plotted, and the identity of the murderer unexpected.
I'm looking forward to more books in this series.
An Old Favorite Becomes a New Sleuth.......2004-06-11
A new sleuth has arrived on the scene, the author Louisa May Alcott. Ms. Alcott was known to have written a few thrillers herself when not writing things like "Little Women." Anna Maclean has gone back and recreated this aspect of Louisa's life with amazing fidelity; however Ms. Alcott does not just write mysteries, but also solves them.
Written with the precision and skill of her historical novels, Jean Mackin creates a minor masterpiece in her debut as Anna Maclean, mystery writer. The plot winds itself in and around pre-Civil War Boston with the beauty and complexity of a Medieval tapestry. The story is entangled with numerous characters functioning on many levels, often seeming to contradict themselves, leading us down many blind alleys. I must admit I could not put this book down. Just when I thought I had figured out who the guilty party was I discovered some new reason why they did not do it. The ending is quite a surprise. If you are looking for an entertaining historical mystery, and value good writing, I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Author Louisa May Alcott goes sleuthing.......2004-04-09
The time is 1854. Louisa May Alcott is 22. Yes, this is the Louisa who later writes Little Women and goes on to become a famous author. In this book she does the sleuthing.
Her friend Dorothy Brownly Wortham is recently returned from her travels in Europe after her wedding to Preston. Louisa and her friend Sylvia Shattuck have been invited to Dorothy's for tea. Also in attendance are Dorothy's twin sisters Edith and Sarah, their brother Edgar, and their aunt Alfreda Thorney. Unfortunately the one person missing is Dorothy. After waiting for quite a while, she arrives. She says that tea was for tomorrow, not today. She won't say where she's been. She seems quite distraught and asks everyone to come back tomorrow for tea. She asks Louisa to arrive a little early so that they may talk.
Louisa is distressed and determined to arrive early to find out what is wrong with Dorothy.
The next day, Dorothy is once again missing. After everyone arrives, Constable Cobban of the Boston Watch and Police arrives to announce that Dorothy had drowned. Her dog Lily was found drowned with her.
Louisa and Sylvia attend the autopsy but it proves to be too much for Sylvia and they leave. Louisa is determined to find out how and why Dorothy was murdered. Yes, it was murder.
Louisa ends up putting herself in danger and bringing gossip upon her name in her quest to find the murderer.
While historical mysteries are not my favorite, I really enjoyed this book. It was fun having a famous author do the sleuthing. I thought I was well written and the characters were so well developed that I had trouble figuring out who did it. That always makes it a good mystery in my eyes.
I look forward to reading more books with Louisa doing the sleuthing. I recommend this book.
A delightful new mystery series.......2004-04-07
Although they are as poor as can be, they live in an exclusive section of Boston so Louisa May Alcott and her family mingle with people of high society. Her father doesn't earn much money and the family's work with the Abolitionists and the underground puts the Alcotts in danger yet they are a close group bound by love. In her early twenties Louisa May wants to be a writer.
She is excited about seeing her friend Dot Wortham's home after a year long honeymoon in Europe. Dot noticeably upset asks Louisa to meet with her tomorrow at a tea party. The next day Louisa May learns that her friend's body was found floating in the Charles River. Bruises around her throat and injuries to her head lead the police to believe she was murdered by her husband who society thinks married Dot for her money. Louisa is more attuned to the behavioral nuances of the families of Dot and her husband and thinks the killer is still at large. Wanting justice to be served, she starts her own investigation and almost ends up as the killer's next victim.
LOUISA AND THE MISSING HEIRESS is a charming amateur sleuth novel that will appeal to fans of historical cozies. Anna Maclean brings the 1850's in Boston to life and readers see how even in the North the social issue of slavery permeates the culture. The heroine is charming, intelligent and independent, a woman who knows what she wants and will work to obtain it. This is the first installment in what looks to be a delightful new mystery series starring a totally wonder protagonist.

Interesting Only to Limited Audience.......2004-10-31
The information is interesting, yet the book is very difficult to read. Any captive audience for this book is probably limited to those who have lived on North Carolina's Outer Banks; around Elizabeth City; and know some or all of the characters. Anyone else will likely lose interest early on due to the cumbersome presentation.
I was constantly distracted by bad punctuation, bad grammar and bad formatting. The book jumps between first person and third person. Apparently the publisher, AuthorHouseĀ, merely provided basic printing facilities without editorial expertise.
