Book Description

The Bible is clear: mankind was meant to exercise godly domination over the earth. Yet today men mine valuable resources by whatever method brings the greatest profit in the shortest time, leaving the earth ravaged. They hunt and fish for pleasure, not food, leaving animal carcasses behind to rot. They worship self and ignore the God who made them.

The answer to the ecological crises of our day is found only in the glorious truths of biblical Christianity: God created ex nihilo; He is both infinite and personal; we are made in His image and thus have great value in Him; Christ's death brought redemption from the consequences of the Fall (for believing individuals now and for all creation when He returns).

There are indeed serious ecological crises in our world, but, says Dr. Francis A. Schaeffer, one of the greatest Christian thinkers of our time: "The Christian who believes the Bible should be the man who--with God's help and in the power of the Holy Spirit--is treating nature now in the direction of the way nature will be [when Christ returns].... God's calling to the Christian now, and to the Christian community, in the area of nature... is that we should exhibit a substantial healing here and now."

A powerful Christian classic--a marvelous theological response to ecological danger signals.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-03-21

This is really what I've come to expect from Schaeffer. Piercing analysis. Balanced approach. Faithfulness to the Scriptures. Lucid and colloquial style. Imaginative approach. In this particular work, Schaeffer presents a fantastic case for concern for the environment. He puts forward a balanced view of ecology and shows how it is not contrary to Biblical Christianity, but the natural conclusion of it. The book is a bit dated, but as relevant as it has ever been.

I would love to see every Christian invest the short amount of time required to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Analysis of Christianity and the Environment.......2002-05-02

This masterpiece of logical thinking is unequaled in the realm of Christian literature for its conciseness of content and expressiveness of thought.

In this book, Schaeffer discusses the Christian approach to the environment and deals with the all-too-common misconceptions peddled by those Christians who are either ignorant of Biblical truth in this area, or are so intent on distancing themselves from the pantheistic, bleeding-heart, tree-hugging left that they come across as uncaring and abusive.

Nature does play a part in God's plan, and far from being entrusted with it as a no-strings-attached gift - a common misconception of the use of "dominion" in the Genesis account - we have been given the moral responsibility of keeping our surroundings while at the same time utilizing them conscientiously to meet our needs. In ridiculing and minimizing man's God-given duty of stewardship, modern Christianity has severely impaired its testimony and driven many conscientious individuals into the arms of equally erroneous sects - many of them pantheistic. This tendency is as wrong as it is regrettable.

Schaeffer further points out that having been created by the same God, any attempt by man to look down on and misuse his physical surroundings is to pass judgement on the God Who created those surroundings ý and us.

Overall well-balanced and thought-provoking, Schaeffer answers the excesses of extreme Christianity on the one hand and raving nature-worship on the other with a treatise that is as elucidative as it is highly readable. This is required reading for anyone who wants to be convicted and informed of the necessity to appreciate and respect nature within the God-oriented context of Biblical truth.

4 out of 5 stars An early warning to the church on environmental issues........2000-05-04

This book was originally written in the early 1970's, as an early response to the rapid spread of anti-Christian environmental books. Now I say "anti-Christian" not in the sense that environmentalism is anti-Christian, but in the sense that Christianity has been getting the blame for the world's environmental ills. In other words, Schaeffer is warning the church to start paying attention to its duties to the earth and environment, because we are getting the blame for pollution and etc...

He rightly points out that Christianity is somewhat responsible for environmental problems, but shows that Bible-practicing churches and members should wake up and see what the Bible really says on the issues. By shuffling the environmental issue back into the corner and ignoring it, we push environmentally concerned people into the Eastern religions and away from Christianity. Since John Passmore's famous book, which blames Christianity's view of dominion (Genesis/Eden) for Western Civilization, and Puritanism for the demise of American ecosystems, the environmental movement has begun rejecting Christianity as a cure. Furthermore, dispensational theology which sees the world as collapsing and being annihilated by Jesus after the Millennium, in favor of building a new Earth, quite strongly implies that we needn't bother with such earthly issues, since the earth will "pass away" no matter how nicely we tend it (rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic). So Passmore and others are somewhat correct, that Christianity has fallen flat on its face in regard to environmental issues. Schaeffer in this book prophetically warns about it, and turns out to be correct.

It is not full of statistics and charts, this is a philosophical book with deep insights by a great Christian thinker. It is interesting that only in recent years, thirty years later, do people finally decide to read it! It should be required reading in seminaries, and attended to by anyone in Christianity who believes in Christian stewardship of the world.

            Book Description

Few can resist the sight of water tumbling over a rocky cliff or splashing down through a forested canyon. In California Waterfalls, Ann Marie Brown details 225 of these extraordinary spots from San Diego to the Oregon border, including drive-to and bike-to falls, falls requiring a moderate hike, and overnight backpacking spots.

            4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2007-06-22

This book gives good descriptions of how to find the better waterfalls of California. The directions are easy to follow.
Her choice of falls to cover is mostly thoughtful, but Tip Toe Falls is too small and uninteresting to fit my notion of a waterfall, and she omits the much more scenic Pacheco Falls.

            2 out of 5 stars California Waterfalls.......2003-11-03

bought this book 3 months ago and have tried to go to four of the waterfall destinations featured. The directions were wrong to two of them (I lost about two hours at one, just driving around trying to find the trailhead). The third one, when I finally reached it, was not exactly what I would call a waterfall. I think this writer needs some lessons in how to write a guidebook. The book appears to be self-published (it's full of photographs of the author's friends, the layout is so garish it looks like it was done by a third-grader, and it is loaded with misspellings and bad punctuation). I read somewhere that this was supposed to be a "coffee-table" style guidebook... what a laugh. Don't waste your money on this one. Buy Shaffer's The Definitive Guide to the waterfalls of Southern and Central California. It has more waterfalls and better pictures.

            5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2003-11-01

I read about this book in the San Francisco Chronicle a few years ago and bought a copy. Since then I've bought at least a dozen more (just bought one today!) and given them as gifts to my friends who love the outdoors. The waterfall descriptions in this book are really interesting to read, and the driving and hiking directions are accurate. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to hike. I don't know why some of these reviews complain about the photos in the book. They are beautiful images and make it easy to identify what the waterfall will look like. If there is a negative, it's that they are printed in black-and-white, but then again I believe that was the medium that Ansel Adams preferred.

5 out of 5 stars Best CA guidebook I own.......2003-11-01

I am an avid buyer of hiking guidebooks, and this one is a top favorite on my bookshelf. It is so dog-eared from trips to so many waterfalls that I finally had to buy a new copy. The author's directions and descriptions are dead-on accurate. If she says it's a 2.3-mile hike, you can be sure it's a 2.3-mile hike. In addition to showing where all the State's best waterfalls are, she also provides lots of interesting background on local history, natural history, and other good stuff. This book is a fun read and a useful resource.

5 out of 5 stars This book rocks!.......2003-10-04

This book has opened up a whole new world for me and my husband. We take it with us everywhere we go around the state, even when we are just visiting relatives, and we go see the waterfalls the author has described in the local area. The book covers the entire state of CA and we've found beautiful waterfalls in places we would never have expected. We love to hike, bike, and camp, and this book has really accurate descriptions that get us where we want to go. The author's comments are also really fun to read.

            Book Description

Is it time to take a break from feminism? In this pathbreaking book, Janet Halley reassesses the place of feminism in the law and politics of sexuality. She argues that sexuality involves deeply contested and clashing realities and interests, and that feminism helps us understand only some of them. To see crucial dimensions of sexuality that feminism does not reveal--the interests of gays and lesbians to be sure, but also those of men, and of constituencies and values beyond the realm of sex and gender--we might need to take a break from feminism.

Halley also invites feminism to abandon its uncritical relationship to its own power. Feminists are, in many areas of social and political life, partners in governance. To govern responsibly, even on behalf of women, Halley urges, feminists should try taking a break from their own presuppositions.

Halley offers a genealogy of various feminisms and of gay, queer, and trans theories as they split from each other in the United States during the 1980s and 1990s. All these incommensurate theories, she argues, enrich thinking on the left not despite their break from each other but because of it. She concludes by examining legal cases to show how taking a break from feminism can change your very perceptions of what's at stake in a decision and liberate you to decide it anew.

            Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars selective and elitist.......2007-05-01

What sounds like an intriguing book falls flat upon reading it. Halley's version of feminism is an elite and whitewashed feminism that has been under attack for 25 years. Her critique is nothing new. By positing her definition of feminism, Halley exposes her own ignorance, particularly of the central place women of color have in feminism. What's also frustrating is the complete lack of political efficacy in her argument. She completely avoids issues of reproductive rights, which are central to feminism. She attacks feminism on the ivory tower theory level (which just so happened to have helped get her, and other female professors, her job) but completely ignores the other side of feminism: activism. Halley's book was dated when it was published and does more harm than good. To critique feminism, she needs to use a fuller, more accurate, and contemporary definition.

Bruce Jones' long running conspiracy storyarc comes to a head in Split Decisions. Still reeling after his encounter with the Absorbing Man, Dr. Bruce Banner finds himself once again in the middle of the secret conspiracy to obtain a sample of Hulk blood. His old cohort Doc Samson is along for the ride, as is the seemingly invulnerable Sandra Verdugo, Bruce's old flame Nadia Blonsky, and the ever growing more mysterious Mr. Blue. Loaded with action and a surprising amount of mounting suspense, plus surprises, revelations, and plot twists galore; this is truly the best storyarc to hit the Incredible Hulk in quite some time, and Bruce Jones has proved himself once again to be just as incredible. Returning artist Mike Deodato has crafted some truly breathtaking artwork, and his comely renderings of the female form are the best in the business next to the great Jim Lee. All in all, comics today don't usually get better than this.

            Book Description

Anagram loops, mixagrams, pentads, and phrase forays: if you love wordplay, these intriguing puzzles are better than crosswords! They don't have those awful, never-before-heard words meant just to trip you up. And 7 out of these 10 puzzles have no clues at all! You complete them by doing anagrams or by using the three or four letters provided to get you started. Begin with the simplest and make your way up the ladder to the hardest and trickiest. Split decisions have letter pairs in a grid, surrounded by empty squares. Each answer consists of a pair of words that share the letters that should be entered in those squares. For example: Go two by two to complete miniature crisscross puzzles: the vowels are there, but you have to add the correct consonants. Mixagrams have a five- and a four-letter word on each line; their letters have been mixed together, but their order is unchanged--just like this: D A R I U N V E T = DRIVE + AUNT It's hours and hours of braintwisting! 96 pages, 63 b/w illus., 5 3/8 x 8 1/4.

5 out of 5 stars A must for those who enjoy word games!.......1998-10-04

This book is just great! I would have sent an e-mail to the author had one been in the book. I'm buying several for Christmas gifts - my friends are also crazy about Split-Decsions. We had been hoping a book like this would come out and when I found this, I was overjoyed.

Glad to have this opportunity to let the author know how much we all like Split-Decisions. It's just great for those of us 'word game lovers'. I don't want to forget the other word games in this book, they're also good (haven't finished them yet - still working on them) but I can't wait for the next book to come out.

3 out of 5 stars blah blah blah.......2003-07-29

This book just seemed to drag on. It kept talking about how tia missed angel and because of it she found a new guy. So, tia ends up breaking angels heart and they both go on a break. hopefully she will just hook up with trent. Then there is jessica and her guy problems as usual. Except now there is evan who she somewhat likes but still can't get past how he looks so different from the other guys she has dated. They don't talk about conner and liz that much even though they should. Oh, and Andy found some sophmore who he likes but doesn't.

            4 out of 5 stars split decision.......2003-07-21

I thought this book was pretty good. I really like Evan, he seems really cool. and why doesn't jess just admit she still has feelings for will? why does she have to throw herself in a relationship she isn't ready for and hurt evan in the process? the tia/trent/angel triangle was totally predicatable. of course tia is going to want to date other people while angel is gone and vice versa. they r too young to stay together forever. it is just sad when u realize that people change and grow apart even tia and angel.

5 out of 5 stars Book #14 in SVH: Senior Year Series.......2003-02-25

By the cover alone, you can tell "Split Decision" is mainly Tia Ramirez's book, though it alternates between Jessica Wakefield and Andy Marsden as well. Jessica gets dumped in the second chapter by Will Simmons for his ex, Melissa Fox (big surprise there--not); but Jess doesn't waste any time rebounding with one of Conner McDermott's sarcastic friends (Evan Plummer), though she starts to have her doubts about Evan, not that I blame her--he was pretty rude. Besides, we already have one mismatched couple--Liz and Conner--we don't really need another, in my opinion. And Andy, in an attempt to find his niche, joins the SVH Outdoors Club, only to have a perky sophomore named Six Hanson fall head over heels for him. How he feels about Six, though, is still unclear.

Now back to Tia: At the end of "All About Love" (the previous book), Tia had cheated on her college boyfriend (Angel Desmond) with Trent Maynor, which was quite ironic, since she had been the one fearing Angel would cheat on her first with some busty coed. Anyway, Tia feels guilty about it--but not enough to stop seeing Trent. Tsk tsk, Tia.

"Split Decision" isn't one of my favorite SVHSY books, probably because I'm not much of a Tia fan, but it was interesting to see how things worked out between her, Trent, and Angel. Worth reading if you're into teen love triangles and especially if you're a SVHSY fan.

4 out of 5 stars An ok book..........2002-09-03

Well this was an ok SVHSY book. It was mostly about Tia questioning her relationship with Angel. She meets this guy Trent at the club and for some strange reason she just cant control herself and starts making out wit this random guy that she just met like 5 mins ago!! That totally confused me when she did that. And Jessica is scared to start a relationship with Evan b/c of what Will and Melissa might think of her. -Which was so ShAlLoW!!- So all in all it was a good book. And u have 2 read it stay in tune wit the series!!

            5 out of 5 stars Pretty Good.......2001-04-26

I really liked this one even though it wasn't one of my favorites. Tia needs to tell trent and angel whats going on and see what's best after that. I think Jess and Evan would be cute if he..cleaned up a little. But im not sure if he's realy her type. I love the whole connor/Liz thing, but i wish they would just stay together now! And Andy and Six is cute..I hope he's interested in her...
