Book Description
Globalization and the Small Open Economy investigates the specific role of small open countries in a globalizing economic system and assesses the unique pressures and opportunities afforded them by globalization.
Traditionally, in contrast to large countries, small open economies (SOEs) have relied on international economic policy rather than domestic policy as a means to foster national economic development. Their firms also have a far greater reliance on host countries to gain competitive advantage than those of larger nations. This would suggest that globalization has potentially a far greater impact on SOEs than on large countries. The contributors to this volume concur with this view and seek to outline the challenges and opportunities faced by policymakers and managers of multinational enterprises from SOEs. They examine the role of government, environmental policy, inward and outward foreign direct investment and multinational management and conclude that, on balance, globalization provides more of an opportunity than a threat to economic growth in these countries.
An innovative set of papers with fascinating new insights on the present and future role of small, open countries in the global economy. This will be an important new reference source for academics and students, public policy research institutes, international business scholars and trade economists.

An informative compilation of scholarly assessments.......2002-03-27
Collaboratively edited by Daniel Van Den Bulcke (Professor of International Management and Development, University of Antwerp, Belgium) and Alain Verbeke (Professor of International Business and Public Policy, Solvay Business School, University of Brussels, Belgium), Globalization And The Small Open Economy is an informative compilation of scholarly assessments regarding small, open countries and their economies in a globalizing economic system. Examining the role of government, environmental policy, investment and multinational management, Globalization And The Small Open Economy concludes that globalization offers more benefits than threats to economic growth to small nations. Individual nations looked at in close detail include Korea, Singapore, and Belgium in this fact-filled, persuasively argued and highly analytical economic commentary. Globalization And The Small Open Economy is a strongly recommended addition to academic reference collections and international economics supplemental reading lists.

Great Little Book.......2004-04-06
Has a few photo flaws, but mostly a great little book to have. Has lots of history, current information, photos, and maps on all eight of the California Channel Islands. Also has information on boating and local mainland marinas in Southern California. It's small enough to take anywhere. Try to get the latest Edition, as many things do change!

Slightly uncomfortable look back at the way we used to be.......2005-06-12
I don't know how I missed knowing about Benedict all these years. She's been an award-winning novelist for two decades but I only just recently discovered her. This was her first novel, nominated for the National Book Award, and it's set during and just after Reagan's election in 1980 -- which seems like the Paleolithic now (Bush having brought us up to perhaps the Neolithic). Lexi Steiner is a New York girl transplanted to Southern California, an ambitious immigration lawyer whose best friend (alter ego, actually) is Nell, a writer. The two of them have followed each other around the country since college, being constantly together, sometimes sharing bedmates, and always telling each other absolutely everything. But at the age of twenty-nine, their shared life as "refugees" is beginning to wear thin; maybe love and caring about someone isn't such a bad idea after all. Then there's David Wiley, semi-fanatical hard-news reporter who's really tired of living in hotels and airports. Lexi and David get together for dinner at just the right moment in both their lives, and you sort of know where things are headed. But first they have to figure out how to be a couple, but it's like slow dancing: You just stand close together and move your feet a little. This is really a well-written story and even in her first novel, Benedict shows great expertise in character development. The unsettling thing is how different the times were in 1980, how "quaint" Lexi's and Nell's sexual adventures seem, how naive David's daughter, Louise, is at twelve and fourteen. It makes you realize just how far the country has backslid in the past decade; I expect high-top shoes and buggy-whips any day now. You forget what "liberal" used to mean, before the Right turned it into a swear-word. Terrific book, though.
Book Description
The loss of one's parents is a devastating experience. To lose both within two years, after a five-year dance with disease and death, is even more heart-wrenching. This was the author's personal experience, beginning with the decline of her mother's health in 1998, her subsequent death in 2001, and her father's death in 2003. Amy C. Baker suddenly found herself multi-tasking in a way she'd never imagined. Besides being a mother, a corporate executive and volunteer at church and school, she found herself thrust into the new roles of managing her parents' health care, finances and property. This book demonstrates how God's unfathomable love carries us through these unforeseen seasons of life.

Slow Dancing at Death's Door.......2007-07-16
Slow Dancing at Death's Door is a candid account of the author's experiences as her parents reached their final days. She shares her feelings of frustration, grief, anger, and all of those things she wish she hadn't said or did. For individuals suffering through similar circumstances will see themselves in the author's words, feel an instant connection to her most secret thoughts, and will take comfort in that they aren't alone in these aspects.
In addition to this very comforting material, the author also includes information to help educate the reader on things such as wills, power of attorney, and making preparation for all of those things we'd much rather put off. Despite our need to stay in denial, these simple preparations will not only make things run smoother in the long run but actually assure that your parents' wishes are fulfilled.
The author also urges people to really get to know their parents (their life before you were born, their stories, what they value, etc) and make a loving connection. This action is particularly important for those who have had falling outs with their parents.
Great Book about problems encountered when a parent is dieing.......2007-01-14
This book was extremely helpful. I recently lost my mother to cancer and I had alot of unanswered questions. This book was a god-send. I advise anyone that finds themselves in the same shoes of god forbid losing a parent to illness or accident, to get this book.. She uses some scripture from the bible and her personal experience is an added plus. Not just an author making up the answer and the story, she has actually been there. So do yourself a favor and get this book if you have questions about a parents death.
Seeing Death Off with Integrity.......2006-04-02
It is impressive to see that a woman, Amy C. Baker, from the corporate world has stepped forward to show us our deepest human value: the need for serving our departing generation. Her book Slow Dancing at Death's Door (Life Journey/Cook International, Colorado, 2006) incarnates a healthy form of what has been called `Survivor's Syndrome'. Amy Baker exhausts her experience of anger, frustration, loneliness, and grief, that are the lot of so many aging members of our `Sandwich Generation', and comes out with an enlightening lesson: forgiving for not knowing better.
Losing her mother to cancer and father to Hepatitis C, Amy Baker recounts what it feels like losing your loved ones and how best you can play your role of a caring child, at the same time a spouse, a parent, a responsible employee, and many temporary roles that one is obliged to take in life. That business world has not calcified her human spirit shows in Baker's account of all she did for her dying parents to claim her success as a humane being. That she is an intelligent writer is evident from the warmth and energy of emotion that saturate her expression throughout the book.
As Amy Baker maturely embellishes her passages with good-hearted humor, the gravity of a subject like death (and that of one's own parents) has no chance to oppress or offend the reader. However, Baker does more than that. With her faith, she illustrates the falsity of our perfection-seeking attitude towards life, thus showing us the importance to shed our slough of self-centeredness while at the same time not overlooking the need to take care of ourselves in order to be able to care for our parents. The emphasis is on growth not only in flesh and blood but more so in human spirit. On the practical side, we can see advice on hospice, management of ailing parents, and legal matters pertaining to inheritance, estate panning, and wills.
The nonconformist reader might frown over Baker's frequent resort to biblical quotes, which are seen as the source of inspiration and divine power. This does become a bit obtrusive, especially at end of the book, where the author discusses preserving family history for future generations. Nevertheless, the spontaneity of her account of her parents' death holds high her attempt to `light beacons of hope' in her reader's heart. The touching beauty of Amy Baker's tapestry of words in paying homage to her late parents is heart winning. She is one writer who emerges victorious from her situation as a caring survivor.
A Helpful Book For All!.......2006-02-04
Author Amy C. Baker has touched upon a cord in her new work, "Slow Dancing At Death's Door." This work is in a way a journal of her experience in dealing with the life and death of her parents. Now wait, yes it is an emotional read, but one that is done with such honesty and heart-felt compassion and understanding that all of us who are facing the same dilemma will breath a sigh of relief as we devour each morsel of this writing.
Our author shares some of her parents lives with us, their personality, their good and some of their bad traits and her relationship with them. She takes us on some rides down memory lane and brings us to the point of their departure into eternity.
In this work we learn about such things as, "Living Wills," "Medical Power of Attorney," and "Hospice," to name a few. Listen, if you have aging parents you are either going to deal with these issues now or later, and later is not a good idea.
I know for those of us who have aging parents this is an issue we would much rather sweep under the rug, but guess what? It's going to come seeping out and there isn't a thing in this world you can do to stop it.
I loved this book because the writing was honest and held invaluable information that is needed, yet it was laced with strong faith in a God who will strengthen us and be with us. A realization that in life there is death in death there is eternity and it is a road we are all traveling. This work will help you to help those who are passing through the door to have a much happier departure and you to have a much less stressful goodbye.
I cannot recommend this highly enough for all those who have aging parents. the encouragement, advice and strength you will obtain from this book is irreplaceable.
A must have!

HOLLIS BALL JUST RECEIVED AN ODD REQUEST FROM HER EX-HUSBAND: FIND THE PERSON WHO MURDERED HIM. . . .
When charming rich kid Sam Wescott dies in a fatal boating accident, few mourn his untimely death. But perhaps the person most shocked to shed a tear is reporter Hollis Ball, his former wife, who was abandoned by him ten years before on their honeymoon. Now he is gone.
Or is he?
For Sam's ghost brings Hollis the interesting news that his accidental death was really murder, and pesters her to find his killer. She would like to say no. But ever susceptible to his no-good upper-class wiles--even in their present somewhat spectral form--she says yes. And plops down into the middle of a whopping big story that involves Sam's old-line family, a group of ecoactivists, and some very hot political potatoes. . . .

Try that again Sam........2001-09-17
Helen Chappell isn't a nationally known author, though she could easily become one with this series. It is indeed rare to find a quack as both a heroine and as an amateur sleuth. And it is an abolutely great idea to have a ghost as her partner -- especially if the ghost happens to be her long lost husband. Helen does well with this first novel in the series but she leaves a nagging feeling that she simply isn't up to the challenge. This book is a great start for a woman who basically isn't a very good, or a very convincing, writer. If you enjoy a good change of pace this is the book for you.
A puzzling mystery that's VERY funny!.......1999-03-26
Helen Chappell's Slow-Dancing With the Angel of Death ranks right up there with the best books I've read this year.
I found myself identifying with the heroine, Hollis Ball, from the very first page. She is independent, intelligent, and hysterically funny.
The book begins with Hollis heading to the funeral of her wealthy, irresponsible ex-husband. Hollis may have loved Sam at one time, but she hasn't forgiven him for his past actions, and she certainly doesn't want to deal with his wealthy, obnoxious family members.
Unfortunately for Hollis, Sam may be dead, but he's definitely NOT gone. He begins appearing to Hollis at inopportune moments. At first she thinks she's cracking up from the stress, but she finally accepts that she is indeed being haunted by the ghost of her dead ex-husband.
Sam wants Hollis to investigate his death & she finds that she cannot refuse- after all, she is a reporter and her curiousity gets the best of her. She ends up stumbling across shady land deals, enviornmental terrorists, and crooked politicians.
The secondary characters in this book make it even better. Chappell paints a funny and believable portrait of the residents of the small Maryland town.
After reading this book, I ran out for the other two in the series, Dead Duck & Ghost of a Chance. They are just as good, if not better. I'm very glad someone recommended Helen Chappell's books to me.
Few changes needed; a good mystery leaving you wanting more.......1996-07-27
A first mystery by an author of romances written under twopen names. "Slow Dancing..." introduces us to a solid, 'in your face' protagonist you will want to read about againwhen Chappell's next book in the series releases early in1997. Our heroine has been divorced and on her own as a newspaper reporter, since her rich, handsome and irresponsiblehubsand decided commitment wasn't for him and disappeareda few hours after their wedding. After ten years, she is summoned to the 'family home' because her ex has died. Asshe drives there her ex, as a rather cold, transparent vapor, appears by her side requesting that she find who killed him.She never could tell him no; only other problem, no one elsesees him, and the story delightfully proceeds. Book Description
From his home in a utility closet at a rundown golf course to the deck of a multimillion dollar yacht, from a prison cell to golf with the President of the United States, from the caddy lot to international acclaim as a player, celebrity and sex symbol, that's the wild, often wacky journey of Eddie (The Dream) Weaver in Slow Dancing with Bobby Jones. In this warm, humorous story, Eddie is handed the secret of golf that golfers have long believed exists somewhere out there. It was passed to him from the great Bobby Jones through an old man doing time in prison. Trailed by rowdy, looney friends with nicknames like Dawg and Preacher, Eddie swings his way to the top of the game and beyond, to riches he has never imagined, to such adoration that there is even a line of women's lingerie named for him, but he is not comfortable with this runaway success and all it brings. His gritty background, the burden of being an ex-convict, as well as the battle to keep his secret from being uncovered, haunt him and make him long for a simpler life. Eddie wins tournaments at an unprecedented rate and draws close to Jack Nicklaus' record for major championships, a record thought safe for decades if not forever. His chase and his search for peace in his frantic world reach a climax at the U.S. Open with the record at stake and with Tiger Woods, a hot Mexican kid named Taco and his toughest opponent himself standing in his way.

WOW as a male reader WOW.......2004-07-18
This novel was very erotic and also heartwarming in a way without giving the entire book away, I found myself really careing about the charecters and hoping for the happy ending, well there is a twist at the end that was beautifully written, If your into romance, erotica or an entertaioning read this is the book for you. I rated it 4 stars as some of the scenes were repeated from previous novels.
OOOOHHHH BABY!!!!! I highly recommend it........1999-02-15
I say 4 out of 5 stars. It is a well-rounded book in that it has the draws people want. Sex, voyerism, revenge, violence and yes, intrigue. The sex - descriptive, informative and adult written. The voyerism - a license for and us to walk on the wild side with the main character and to do things we never would have done in our real worlds. The revenge - I believe will please your sense of justice for the inner child in all of us. The violence - probably not the type you think but still there. The intrigue - how will the story progress? Will the character cross those boundries that we want to cross all the time but don't. Will you regret finding that you have reached the last page like I did? I believe so. Now you ask "If this is how this critic felt about 'Slow Dancing' then why not rate it a 5? I am a hard sell and it did have a drawback for me - it softened the line between good and evil. A line in this case that I believe should not have been softened but then maybe you should decide for yourselves.
As the author, I know you'll have fun with Maggie & Barbara.......1998-06-14
I'm the author of Slow Dancing and I've received hundred of letters from men and women alike who've fallen in love with Maggie, the 'entertainer' who, as an angel (?) returns to guide Barbara through a world of sensuality. Throughout the journey both Barbara and Maggie learn the meaning of true relationships - and great sex.

The story line moved a little slow, however, I like the idea that there is reason to realize we need to learn and share our experiences and thoughts. Through communications we have good realtionships.
