Customer Reviews:
good natural history reference.......2006-11-10
This book has been a useful reference for identifying ecological differences throughout WY.
A step above any field guide.......2000-05-06
Dennis Knight's "Mountains and Plains" fills a surprisingly open niche- a guide that explains how whole ecosystems work. This invaluable reference is nicely organized according to recognizable ecosystems (shortgrass plains, sagebrush steppe, riparian forest, montane woodlands, high-country conifers, and alpine zones), and describes not only who lives there, but why they live there, and how all of these parts fit together. "Mountains and Plains" is a perfect marriage of scientific ecology and natural history, and is one of the most valuable references on my professional bookshelf. Knight's insights have proven equally valuable throughout the Central Rocky Mountains, from Montana to northern New Mexico.
If you want to catalog flowers and birds, pick up a field guide. If you want to understand Rocky Mountain landscapes, pick up "Mountains and Plains."

Customer Reviews:
This guide is very useful - but get a country guide too........2003-02-24
My girlfriend tried using this guide, as one would Frommer's or Fodor's (see my reviews), and became a bit frustrated. Two issues `twisted her lemon', one was the paltry lack of information on important locations (Salisbury and its magnificent cathedral gets 58 words, Stonehenge a short paragraph) and the other was the difficult and demanding way the guide connects the hotel descriptions to the maps.
Regarding the first point, the title of the guide is very clear about what it covers: Hotel's and Itineraries. It is not a country guide.
Karen Brown's selections of hotels are excellent and her comments and appraisals are `spot-on. She writes as one who has actually stayed at each establishment, who has met the owners or managers, and one who paints a picture of what you will find and the experiences that you should have when using one of these select properties. Great. That said you should know before purchasing this guide that these hotel selections are some of the most unique and best in the UK. Therefore, they are not for those on a shoestring or moderate budget; but rather, as the financially well-endowed would say, these guides are for those with "discriminating tastes." Her website, karenbrown.com, is worth a visit and you can check out the various accommodations listing in greater detail.
Besides top notch unique accommodations, the guide gives you nine extraordinary driving itineraries that wind you through the very best regions of England, Wales & Scotland. This is what the book is all about. Nada mas. I kindly pointed this out to my girlfriend.
Regarding the second point, the guide is cumbersome. Karen Brown needs to make finding the hotels, which correspond to dot on her maps, much easier. Her driving itineraries are in the front of the book, and the recommended hotels in the last part of the book and there is no simple reference between the two. There are much better ways to set this up. Karen Brown needs to learn from the major guide publishers. They could help her a lot here. Also, her driving itinerary maps are very remedial and could be much better.
If you have money, love to drive and you want unique, superior accommodations, get this guide, you won't be disappointed. This guide is very useful, especially when used in tandem with a good country guide, like Fodor's or Frommer's mentioned above. Recommended

What Would I Do Without It?.......2007-06-04
This book was essential for my trip around England. It had up-to-date information, admission prices, opening times, and days that certain attractions were open. Without this book I would not have known half of the places I went to before traveling to London. The summaries of the places are accurate and all the accomidation suggestions I took were just as the book had said. The best part are the maps of the small places like cities and towns so that once you get somewhere you know where everything is. The transportation sections were also extremely helpful because sometimes it is VERY hard to get around in England without your own car. I would recommend this book to anyone who is planning their first or even a return trip to England. Even though it is a bit heavy to carry around, the extra effort is completely worth it!!!
Fodors always reliable.......2007-05-15
Over the years I have come to prefer Fodor's guides since they appeal to the middle-aged traveler (like me). My days of backpacking and hostels are gone, preferring nicer accommodations and meals yet still appreciating a bargain. Fodor's guides I have found to be the best reference for this market segment. They are always accurate and well-written.

Customer Reviews:
Lovely book.......2007-09-18
Gorgeous photos, nice descriptions, but too short & not detailed enough. It would also have helped to have had captions under the photos; I frequently couldn't tell what I was looking at. I also wished it were longer. Overall a worthwhile book if a little on the shallow side.
Get a preview before you visit.......2006-12-27
I am a big fan of ruined castles. I like ancient, crumbling old buildings from times long past. There are many such castles in the British Isles, but there are also many more "modern" castles, built hundreds of years after the medieval period, filled with sumptuous carpets and luxurious wall coverings and such. I can see the allure of these castles for some people, but they do not hold the same wonder for me, and when I am paying a lot of money to visit a foreign country, I want to optimize my experience as much as possible.
This book is wonderful because it lets me do just that. Many guidebooks (I use the Let's Go and Rough Guides) do not differentiate between different kinds of castles, and offer a brief description of each one. It's hard to know what you're getting into before you actually arrive. With this book, you can get a preview of each castle, so you're never surprised. I mentioned my personal love of ruins, but this book is great for any taste, or just the curious.
The information on each structure is sparse, and much attention is paid to the glorious full color photographs. I never got the impression this book was trying to be the authority on castle information however, and I think it succeeds admirably at its chosen task. It is a good supplemental guidebook if you're interested in the topic.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide for more intellectual traveling.......2006-08-30
This book is much better at diving into the details and characteristics of the places and events than many of the other travel guides I considered. I wouldn't use this book if you're looking for a specific place to stay or cheap eats, but rather the historical context or anectdotal information that makes traveling more insightful. Don't get me wrong; there are plenty of lists, walking routes, maps and key data that will make travel easier. But National Geographic prides itself in making the leisurely travel experience much more encompassing to your senses. The photographs are incredible, and the text is in-depth. I would make this book (and the entire Series for that matter) a supplement that rounds out your vacation, alongside your "best restaurants and hotels" guide that will help find the basics.
visuals are great.......2003-09-22
the visuals are excellent and the book inspired us recently as we drove thru scotland and made our itenuary as we were driving. the hotels and places to eat sections is poor and cannot compare to FROMMERS, FODORS or especially LONELY PLANET. this book should be used in addition to one of the above.
Great Pictures.......2000-08-24
This guide offers little concrete information regarding history, train/bus/car routes, nothing on hostels, and very little on prices, other than the occasional "Great Britain is expensive". The pictures, however, are wonderful, and incline one to be far more likely to visit a sight than the dreary pages upon pages of description found in other guides. In short, helpful for visualizing Great Britain, but not much else.

A motivational "MUST-READ" for All!.......2001-12-24
Dr. Bailey has captivated an audience of adults and youth with "The Dream Merchant". Each page is just as exciting as the previous page. The pearls of wisdom that he has incorporated into his book have stuck with me. I even find myself using some of them when I am in discussions with youth.I have given so many away that I feel that I am the publicist! Whenever I take a nap, I just imagine myself meeting Junior and participating in the adventure! My hat is off to Erroll and the exciting future of "The Dream Merchant"! A movie would be fantastic!
Simply the best.......2000-08-30
I read this book over two years ago, and I still feel it is one of the best books I have ever read. If you can, give this book to a younger brother or sister and be inspired yourself. It shows how a young man who is in a troubled home, meets a figure who is between real and mythical, yet he teaches him lessons that would take him throughout life. The best part of the book for me is when Junior taught the young man about intimacy. Very enlightening.
Truly a must read for all.......2000-02-22
A wonderful, inspirational and insightful book. This is a book to sit and read as a family, especially those with males. Truly awesome in my opinion.
EXCELLENT!! WONDERFUL !! EXCITING!! A MUST READ!!.......1999-10-21
All out, my FAVORITE book! Mr. Dream Merchant was one of those novels that you could not put down and once you did, you wanted to read it again, and I DID! It touched on being human and being spiritual, one with God, and understanding life's parellels of being accepted. This book touched me in a way that I thought could never happen. I understand how one's dreams can come to life by the words written in this novel. I would highly suggest that you get this novel TODAY and READ IT. Thank you Mr. Bailey for putting together such a WONDERFUL and SPIRITUAL book. I have highlighted certain areas in the book to remind me of WHO IS IN CONTROL!!! May God Continue to BLESS you on your Journey's END......
A thought provoking book that seem to speak to you directly........1999-07-24
I enjoyed this book because it seemed so personal. I would recommend it to all youngsters and anyone who is spiritually drained. It reminds you that you are here for a purpose.
