Indispensible for citrus research.......1999-01-24

This is the best and most valuable book I have bought for my work as a plant pathologist. Subjects are well-defined and easy to find. Lots of color pictures with good explanations. Text is well written and the information is to the point and clear. Each disease has its own chapter on how to detect using indicator plants. Separate chapters on biochemical detection, growing healthy plants in the greenhouse, grafting methods. Every person working with graft-transmissible diseases of citrus should have this book.

Map - 5 stars, Book - 1 star.......2007-05-17

Buy this book for the map in back. When planning your first trip to Costa Rica it is extraordinarily helpful to have a detailed map of the entire country so you can get your bearings and get a feeling for the distance between Monteverde and Manuel Antonio, for example. The map also has a good "places" index where you can look up the names of towns, parks and beaches and find them on the map. This came in VERY handy because, as I found out, there are many places in Costa Rica with the same name (i.e. there are three towns named 'Matapalo', eight towns named 'San Isidro' etc.). If you are driving in Costa Rica, this map is a must. As an added benefit, the map has Recommended Itineraries that match those highlighted in the book.

The book itself, even the color pictures, is lackluster. They do a C or C+ job of providing a bare bones general overview of the country.

...i lugged this around and liked, at first, looking at the pics -- however this book is not comprehensive in the least to the even slightly curious and adventuresome traveler. this is a tourist guide, not a travelling guide. fyi!

Although I find the large Insight Guides to be useless, the pocket guides have worked VERY well for me in Morocco and in Costa Rica. By being condensed, they choose very interesting itinaries for you.

Comprehensive and thorough with great photos.......2000-09-28

Vacation photos are the ubiquitous, clichéd chronicle of the average person's travels. Yet few travel books include more than a small smattering of so-so photos, offering only a peek at a destination's sights and environs; even though a great deal of our travel memories and experiences are through images. This book, along with the Insight Guides series in general, is different, offering a comprehensive set of fantastic photos that not only showcase the sights, but bring the details, richness, and life (some gorgeous, some gritty) of Costa Rica closer.

The accompanying text, while a bit uncharacteristic (likely due to editorial consistency), is informative and comprehensive, giving you a great overview of Costa Rica, its history, its people, and places of interest. Its travel information, such as lodgings, appears targeted towards middle-class travelers, although it touches on a wide range of styles and budgets. And when you're ready to plan your itinerary the maps outshine those of any other guide book, and are good enough to use on your trip, even for 90% of the driving most folks are likely to do.

Other guidebooks might offer more in-depth and "insider" information with a particular slant (e.g. the excellent, down-to-earth, and environmentally conscious book by Harry S. Pariser, "Explore Costa Rica") but the Insight Guide should be the first one you buy to "see" where your travels might take you.

Features: the People, National Parks, Places to go, Travel tips, Tropical Forest, Ecosystems. Wonderful pictures. A must, if going to or studying Costa Rica. Worth every cent.

In the cleverly written chapter book, you will learn of an interesting culture (the Indian culture) while reading a great book with a good plot. In BINDI BABES, sisters Geena, Amber and Jazz are still in shock from the death of their mother when their Auntie comes to help out around the house. Geena, Amber and Jazz are used to being spoiled to the core, but when their Auntie came around, everything changed. Auntie wouldn't let their father buy them anything they wanted aswell as many other things the sisters were not used to. To get their life back to normal, Geena, Amber and Jazz decide that marrying Auntie off would be best...

I've read this book so many times, but I never get sick of it!! This book is well-written and I feel so connected to the characters, since im also part of Indian culture. I got this book on my vacation to India, in a bookstore. Sounded interesting and kept me entertained on the whole plane ride back home. I doubt I'll ever get tired of this book. Amazing read!!

Amber, Jazz, and geena Dhillon are three sisters who get whatever they want when they want it. Their dad buys them anything they want. They all have the best clothes, shoes, accessories all of the other girls in their school envy them, and all their teachers love them, they are certainly teachers pets. But that all changes when their aunt from India comes and lives with them to help their single dad. The girls aunt steps in and "ruins" their lives. She doen't let the girls dress like they would usually dress, she doesn't let their dad buy them shoes even though they have fifty pairs, and she makes weird food...So they try to get their auntie to marry. Does it work? Well you are going to have to read the book to find out!

The Review

Merchant Mr Attawal, disagreeable next door neighbor Mrs Macey, head of the lower school Mr Grimwade, teachers Miss Thomas and Mr Agora, a clumsy newspaper boy, inspectors coming to visit Coppergate, Ms Woods and a special assembly, sharing a room and of course Auntie all figure in this entertaining tale.

Narinder Dhami has set down a captivating, absorbing anecdote certain to enchant girls in the target audience of 11-15 year olds. The interaction among the sisters, their dealing with having their lives turned topsy turvy first by the demise of their mother and later with the introduction of an aunt they don't really know, don't trust, and don't want to like; provides the grist for a fun read.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

Loved the characters.......2004-07-20

Meet Amber, Jazz and Geena Dhillon. They are sisters living in London who are the envy of all their friends. They have the best clothes and the teachers all like them too. They have it all. But then the unthinkable happens. Their auntie from India comes to live with them! Since their mother died, it has been just their dad and them. And dad is a pushover. Need a new pair of shoes? Just ask. Dad will buy them. It doesn't matter that you have a pair in your closet that you've never worn. Dad will give his girls anything they ask for. But now Auntie is butting into everything. She's even got Dad convinced that he is spending too much money on the girls! Can you imagine? So the girls come up with a plan to get rid of Auntie. They plan to marry her off. Can this possibly work? Join the Bindi Babes as they try one hilarious scheme after another to keep Auntie from ruining their lives.

I ADORE Narinder Dhami's books. Bhangra Babes kept me entertained for hours and hours. The plot was sweet and funny! I dont want to give away too much, but to me, this was a truly amazing book!
