This well-balanced assessment of Sigurd Olson (1899-1982) pays as much attention to his spiritual quest as to his activism in defense of America's natural resources with such groups as The Wilderness Society and the National Parks Association. Olson found a sense of completeness while hiking, canoeing, and hunting in the northern Midwest. He conveys these feelings in influential books such as The Singing Wilderness, which inspired a generation of younger nature writers. David Backes, who knew Olson in his later years, captures his personality and evaluates his achievements in lucid prose.

After reading five books by Sigurd F. Olson I felt it only right to read his biography. A Wilderness Within: The Life of Sigurd F. Olson was an insightful look at an incredible person.

From the very early days of Sigurds Life he is drawn toward nature. As Olson's life progresses this propensity turns into his lifes calling. Olson accomplishes more than ten people could in one lifetime. Wilderness defender, author, family man, canoeist- If you are entranced by Sigurd Olson's books you owe it to yourself to read his biography.

The biography describes things about Sigurd F. Olson that one would never guess from reading his books, and elaborates on others.

I'm particularly enjoy reading how hard it was for Olson to get published. He encountered numerous rejections before his first book The Singing Wilderness way published in the 1950's.

Perhaps what I like most about this biography is that Olson seems so much like myself. With each page I learned more about myself and my potential. There is a lot we can learn from the life of Sigurd F. Olson. It is best summed up this way: If you have a cause that is worth persuing keep at it, and don't stop until you've achieved your goals.

Thanks Becks for writing such a wonderful book about a wonderful person.

Anyone who has enjoyed the incredible beauty of Minnesota's Boundary Waters Canoe Area owes a debt to Sigurd Olson, subject of David Backe's "A Wilderness Within". This well-written book helps us understand Sig and how his intense passion to become a significant writer intertwined with his deep spiritual need for wilderness. The book may go a bit overboard in emphasizing some of his shortcomings: his temper, his need to be important, his occasional mistakes, but it also makes clear how much those close to him loved him. It is painful to consider how much the northern Minnesota wilderness would have been developed and decimated but for his efforts. TH Bracken MD Onamia MN

As many in this world know, very few will experience the Bear. Dr. Stringham skillfully shares his experience with the Ursus kind in a manner which allows the laymen to touch this creature in the comfort of the armchair.

I have much respect for what Steve has done, both in this book and his career, and hope that my words may spread the message that is contained in this book. I truly know that this will become a classic; in the true spirit of Michio Hoshino...Please write more Steve!

Real Life Adventure.......2002-11-19

Few of us will ever have the opportunities that Dr. Stringham has had, to live intimately with wild animals on a daily baisis and observe them close at hand. Dr. Stringham has written an enchanting and engaging accout of raising three wild bear cubs in the Alaskan wilderness. Bears have been revealed as intelligent and adaptive creatures who occupy a unique niche in the American wilderness, comparable to the niche primates occupy in Africa. This book is exciting, highly readable and hard to put down. Dr. Stringham is not only a gifted wildlife biologist, but a gifted writer; his descriptions are beautiful. I love this book, as has every other person I know who has had the fortune to read it. Christine Nicolayeff

Kinship with Bears.......2002-11-19

Beauty, personality, kin, children, learning beings--what a picture of these brown bears we are given, by Dr. Stringham. The previous reviewer (blessed282) has describe the beautiful attributes of this book well. I can only add: It is wonderful. I can't wait for his next one!

An Awesome Book.......2002-07-12

Reading this book was a privilege. The author writes with a sensitive and wonderfully descriptive style. I found myself fascinated from the moment I picked it up until I put it down. It is at once an adventure, and a love story of an unusual kind. In reading this book, I felt his reverence for wild animals, particularly for bears, and I learned to look at them as something far more than I had before. I was not overwhelmed by the science in the book, because it was so skillfully interwoven with his description of raising three black bear cubs. Dr. Stringham has created a treasure, and I highly recommend it.

A story that will warm a mother's heart over and over...........1998-02-14

I loaned this book out so many times to other "moms" that I finally lost track of it! However, when it was still in my possession and I'd feel like reading something of real value, I would pull out my dog-eared copy and reread favorite sections or skim . Luckily, after 8 years of being without it, I have located it again through amazon.com. Hooray! Summary: A mother in her 40's attempts to understand her college age son, and follows him to Canada where she lives with him briefly during a 2-month visit in the wilderness. There she begins to understand his different approach to life through their shared experiences, laughter, and tears. It makes me smile and feel good each time I peruse it.

A Border Within addresses the question of English Canadian identity by exploring whether a plurality of discourses can lead to other than a fragmented society. Ian Angus examines the relationship between globalizing social movements and the particularities of identity politics by extending the theories on identity of Harold Innis and George Grant, two seminal figures in Canadian political philosophy, to develop a philosophy applicable to the contemporary social issues of multiculturalism and environmentalism. The border is the governing metaphor of the book. Angus argues that English Canadian identity revolves around maintaining a border between Canada and the United States, and suggests that the border between countries can also be seen as a border between self and Other, between humanity and nature. Multiculturalism and the ecology movement's rethinking of the relation between humanity and nature suggest that English Canadian social and political philosophy is oriented toward sustaining a border between self and Other, in order to preserve what is one's own while maintaining and respecting the Other.

Angus argues that contemporary public discourse is hampered both by the tribalizing devolution of the politics of identity and the globalizing forces of corporate political economy. Addressing this impasse requires a new understanding of the politics of identity in English Canada and the creation of a theory of Canadian social identity as postcolonial, particularistic, and pluralistic.

An important and timely intervention into the public realm, A Border Within offers serious solutions to current questions of national identity, social movements, and the 'homelessness' of late modernity, both in the current Canadian context as well as elsewhere. It is a most ambitious affirmation of the belief in philosophy's ability to address issues central to ordinary human concerns.

Psychosynthesis is a spiritual psychology first articulated by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974). Assagioli moved well beyond the reductionistic psychologies of his time, including psychoanalysis. Like his colleague, Carl Jung, he sought an understanding of the human that would recognize the spiritual dimensions as well as the personal and pathological.

Psychosynthesis draws upon many traditions, incorporating principles and practices from Buddhism, yoga, and other Eastern philosophies, as well as from Western spiritual traditions, philosophy, and psychology. This approach is uniquely suited to our times, because it recognizes the many dimensions of our concerns and our potentials: physical, emotional, mental, interpersonal, social, and spiritual (and in this book, Brown specifically includes the ecological).
