A Wilderness Within: The Life of Sigurd F. Olson

This well-balanced assessment of Sigurd Olson (1899-1982) pays as much attention to his spiritual quest as to his activism in defense of America's natural resources with such groups as The Wilderness Society and the National Parks Association. Olson found a sense of completeness while hiking, canoeing, and hunting in the northern Midwest. He conveys these feelings in influential books such as The Singing Wilderness, which inspired a generation of younger nature writers. David Backes, who knew Olson in his later years, captures his personality and evaluates his achievements in lucid prose.Customer Reviews:
They don't Make them that way anymore.......2000-10-29
From the very early days of Sigurds Life he is drawn toward nature. As Olson's life progresses this propensity turns into his lifes calling. Olson accomplishes more than ten people could in one lifetime. Wilderness defender, author, family man, canoeist- If you are entranced by Sigurd Olson's books you owe it to yourself to read his biography.
The biography describes things about Sigurd F. Olson that one would never guess from reading his books, and elaborates on others.
I'm particularly enjoy reading how hard it was for Olson to get published. He encountered numerous rejections before his first book The Singing Wilderness way published in the 1950's.
Perhaps what I like most about this biography is that Olson seems so much like myself. With each page I learned more about myself and my potential. There is a lot we can learn from the life of Sigurd F. Olson. It is best summed up this way: If you have a cause that is worth persuing keep at it, and don't stop until you've achieved your goals.
Thanks Becks for writing such a wonderful book about a wonderful person.
An excellent and broad review of the life of Sig Olson........1998-01-06

Beauty Within the Beast: Kinship With Bears in the Alaska Wilderness
Stephen Stringham Manufacturer: Seven Locks Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 1931643105 |
Book Description
An innocent act of kindness turns a bear into a dangerous marauder and when she is killed she leaves her three cubs without a mother. Stephen Stringham and his new bride decided to raise these three orphan cubs in the Alaska wilderness. Together, they taught Ontak, Chrislee, and Jonjoanak about which plants they could eat and how to fish and hunt. Dr. Stringham's extensive scientific background made him an ideal teacher of the foraging skills and the social skills they would need to live in a bear's world. In the process of teaching them, Stringham learns from the cubs how bears express fear, anger, and how to appease defensive bears and intimidate the aggressive ones.He and his wife would develop trust and respect through their affection and play, helping to heal the cubs' emotional wounds and decrease their aggression and violence. As the Springhams' bond with their furry charges deepens, they realize that it is a connection that is all too uncommon between people and animals. When Dr. Stringham is told by the Department of Fish and Game to destroy the bears, the depth of that bond would be tested. Beauty within the Beast is a heartwarming true story of how people and animals can find common ground and live in harmony on earth.

A Border Within: National Identity, Cultural Plurality and Wilderness
Ian Angus Manufacturer: McGill-Queen's University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0773516530 |

REVIEW OF ' A BORDER WITHIN'.......2000-12-03
Angus argues that contemporary public discourse is hampered both by the tribalizing devolution of the politics of identity and the globalizing forces of corporate political economy. Addressing this impasse requires a new understanding of the politics of identity in English Canada and the creation of a theory of Canadian social identity as postcolonial, particularistic, and pluralistic.
An important and timely intervention into the public realm, A Border Within offers serious solutions to current questions of national identity, social movements, and the 'homelessness' of late modernity, both in the current Canadian context as well as elsewhere. It is a most ambitious affirmation of the belief in philosophy's ability to address issues central to ordinary human concerns.

Growing Whole: Exploring the Wilderness Within
Molly Young Brown Manufacturer: Psychosynthesis Pr ProductGroup: Book Binding: Audio Cassette ASIN: 0961144424 |
Book Description
A workshop-in-a-box designed to accompany the book, GROWING WHOLE: SELF-REALIZATION ON AN ENDANGERED PLANET, this audiotape and structured journal together support the search for both personal and global transformation. The powerful tools and perspectives of psychosynthesis offer structure and techniques for people to find and follow their own path of heart. * The audiotape offers exercises and meditations in the author's voice, with accompanying flute music. * The journal offers the exercises in step-by-step form with room for the reader to write and draw, and includes brief explanations of each exercise. A symbol indicates the exercises available on the audiotape.Psychosynthesis is a spiritual psychology first articulated by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974). Assagioli moved well beyond the reductionistic psychologies of his time, including psychoanalysis. Like his colleague, Carl Jung, he sought an understanding of the human that would recognize the spiritual dimensions as well as the personal and pathological.
Psychosynthesis draws upon many traditions, incorporating principles and practices from Buddhism, yoga, and other Eastern philosophies, as well as from Western spiritual traditions, philosophy, and psychology. This approach is uniquely suited to our times, because it recognizes the many dimensions of our concerns and our potentials: physical, emotional, mental, interpersonal, social, and spiritual (and in this book, Brown specifically includes the ecological).
Psychosynthesis coaches each person in seeking his or her unique inner truth and way in harmony with the needs and forces of nature. It offers basic, flexible models and principles for understanding and integrating all the parts of ourselves. It offers a wide variety of tools for discovery and choice.
