              Book Description

Destruction of tropical rain forests has increased exponentially in recent years, as have efforts to conserve them. However, information essential to these conservation programs—an understanding of the population dynamics of the community at risk—is often unavailable to the scientists and resource managers who need it most.

This volume helps fill the gap by presenting a comprehensive description and analysis of the animal community of the tropical rain forest at El Verde, Puerto Rico. Building on more than a decade of field research, the contributors weave the complex strands of information about the energy flow within the forest—who eats whom—into a powerful tool for understanding community dynamics known as a food web. This systematic approach to organizing the natural histories of the many species at El Verde also reveals basic patterns and processes common to all rain forests, making this book a valuable contribution for anyone concerned with studying and protecting these fragile ecosystems.

                  Book Description

The report highlights the long history of commodification of land and labour in Ghana, linked to speculative activities and more recently to the activities of international capital, agribusiness, international agricultural centres, and agencies of the state. It makes the case for a new land, agrarian and natural resource regime that prioritises domestic economic needs to provide security of livelihood to the generality of the people.

5 out of 5 stars Great idea for a guide to D.C........2004-08-06

Convenient size--it will fit easily in your purse or back pocket, and a pull-out full-size city map of D.C. make this "Citypack" a good guide to the nation's capital.

A lot of information is presented on landmarks, parks, and other points of interest. A "Where to..." section gives recommendations on food, shopping and entertainment.

I highly recommend the Washington D.C. Citypack by Fodor's.

Oh my goodness, for [the price], you cannot beat these lightweight and extremely handy guides.

                          4 out of 5 stars A Worthy Guide Book........2001-05-15

Fodor's Washington D.C. Citypack is worth the money spent. When I needed research information on the Capitol for my next novel, I stumbled across this book online. I love it. There are surely books that contain more information, but for the purpose it serves, Fodor's is excellent.

Physically, it's small, thin, lightweight, colorful, and laminated. This allows it to be carried in pocket or purse and used repeatedly at a moment's notice--not as a desk-bound reference tome. The laminated cover makes it durable. Feels cool too. The inside covers are a decent map of the key tourist spots, which is a nice supplement to the larger and more thorough pull-out map provided.

The text is divided into color-keyed sections that list a brief history of the city, plus good tips on how-to, where-to, when- o, and why-to visit the choice locations, such as monuments, museums, gardens, restaurants, or entertainment hotspots. The text is clear and concise. I would pick up a Fodor's Travel Guide to any major city I visited without hesitation. --Christopher Bonn Jonnes, author of Wake Up Dead.

5 out of 5 stars Great pocket guide for a impressively bewildering city.......1998-04-11

Tackling a new American city is always a challenge but this little guide gave me a handful of essential "must-sees" with transportation and location all mapped out. It also helped identify the "must-not-sees" - very helpful when time is limited.

3 out of 5 stars Mother and Daughter on the Run.......2007-07-03

It seems Nina and her mother are always moving from one place to another. They have lived all over the country, and Nina never stays in one place long enough to put down roots. Her mother seems to be very uncomfortable making friends and she doesn't like Nina to become close to people, either.

Now Nina is in eighth grade in Vermont. For the first time, she really fits in. She has been recruited by the basketball coach and even though she has never played before, she is a natural. The other girls on the team accept her and she has a crush on a boy who seems to like her back.

Nina's mother spoils everything, though, when she won't let Nina go on a trip to play a basketball team in another town. Nina's coach calls to try to convince Nina's mother to let her go after all, and shortly after his phone call Nina's mother decides it is time for them to move again.

For the first time, Nina keeps in touch with someone--Sam, the boy she liked. When her mother finds out, she gets incredibly angry. For the first time, Nina wonders why they move around so much. Gradually she begins to believe that her mother might be running away from something. Nina is afraid and decides she has to find out what is really going on in her mother's mysterious life.

I liked the mystery of figuring out what was going on with Nina's mother. I also liked Nina's descriptions of how she was able to fit in with a new group of kids at every school. She was a very strong character.

I found it hard to believe that Nina never questioned her mother before this and never rebelled against moving so much.

I read this book as a kid as one of the winners of the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Children's Book Award. Today many years later I still think about the story often and remember the charactors. Out of all the books I have read over the years this is one that still remains in my collection.

                          5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2003-07-15

"Where It Stops, Nobody Knows" opens with 13-year-old Nina Lewis and her mother traveling cross-country to Montpelier, Vermont (one of many cities that she and her mother have lived in over the years). As Nina explains, each move is harder than the one before, because she has to uproot herself from her friends, boyfriends, and school. And like before, just as Nina's getting used to her surroundings--she joins the girls' basketball team and develops a crush on a classmate (Sam Gordon)--her mother insists they move again, this time to Logan, Utah, where Nina's the new kid all over again.

Throughout the book, Nina is confused by her mother's unpredictable moods and whims to move. No explanation is given for why they have to travel so often, but the reader begins to suspect that they're running away from something--or someone. The tension builds slowly as Nina and her mother move to Venice, California, then Brooklyn, New York, where a startling secret is finally revealed about Nina's mother.

"Where It Stops, Nobody Knows" is a great book for teens, particularly girls. I could relate to Nina since I moved a lot as a kid, and readers who have as well will probably like this book, too. Yet even readers who haven't moved around a lot can still empathize with her, since the author does a great job of drawing her out. Recommended.

--Nina Lewis and her mother Joyce have always lived a free life; traveling from town to town whenever they feel like it. But Nina has noticed that this odd way of living is not all fun; lately, Nina has noticed suspicious patterns in their lifestyle. This is most conspicuous when Joyce forces Nina to leave a town she loves; she must be running away from something! What could Joyce be hiding from Nina? --Written so clearly that I could practically see the whole book happening, this book is definitely one of my top three favourite books. --Marisa
