Oceanography written in a style both engaging and scholarly........1999-04-13
Whether you are a serious student of oceanography or, like me, a curious inquirer, you are going to love this book. In fact, once I began reading, it was difficult to close the cover! This book could easily be subtitled "Adventure in the High Seas." Rarely have I read a textbook that combines an engaging style with a scholarly approach that leaves me feeling both truly informed and amazed. I discovered all kinds of interesting facts and theories (deepest part of the world's oceans - the Challenger Deep, part of the Mariana Trench, at 36,163 feet), geological history (the ocean is 4 billion years old yet the oldest ocean floor is only 180 million years old), and astronomical physics (the moon has over two times the tide-generating effect as the sun though it is much smaller).
From helpful hints on serious subjects such as how to escape rip currents to funny stories about plastic bathtub toys (ducks, turtles and frogs) that were lost overboard from a container ship and provided valuable scientific data on ocean currents, I found it all fascinating. The book includes generous amounts of color graphics showing beautiful underwater scenery and marine life as well as colorful maps and aerial photos (for instance, the image depicting wave effects on the shoreline). Each chapter ends with exercises, extensive references, suggested additional reading and recommended web sites to visit. Though the glossary is extensive, I particularly liked the use of the short word derivations that appear frequently throughout the text such as Bathyscaphe (bathos=depth, scaphe=a small ship), thus saving numerous trips to the dictionary.
The book is written as a college-level text for first year oceanography students. Instructors will find an impressive instructional package available from the publisher that includes such things as slides, transparencies, a companion web site reference and an instructor's manual. Read this book and you will agree that it is clearly a five star work.

Let me say right away that this book is rather abbreviated. If you really are intently interested in oceanography, try Garrison's full text. But this Essentials text will convey enough of the field to let you decide if oceanography is a pursuit for you.
The treatment is roughly at a freshman level in university, or perhaps for an advanced high school course. Some prior knowledge of chemisty and physics is assumed, in order for there to be any intelligent discussion of many aspects of oceanography.
The text also is well illustrated. The subject is one that readily lends itself to many photogenic shots. While this may sound frivolous to some, to others it has always been one of the attractions of oceanography. There are indeed some lovely photos scattered through the book.

Great introduction to Stein's expeditions.......2001-08-24
Subtitled "The archaeological discovery of the "silk route" linking the Roman Empire with Cathay", it is edited and introduced by Jeannette Mirsky. Stein, born in Budapest in 1862, was one of the first and greatest Foreign Devils on the Silk Road (to appropriate the title of Peter Hopkirk's later history of the era). Archaeologist, linguist, surveyor, geographer, student of religion, Stein made several extremely important finds, including the cache of documents in Cave 17 at Tun Huang, the world's oldest known printed document, the ruins at Niya, the Jade Gate and several others, not least, the language of the mysterious Tokharians which are still such a hot topic of controversy even a century later. Usually archaeologists take forever to publish their work, but here Stein was a great exception in quickly publishing a great number of books. This tome, originally published in 1933, was one of the later ones (Stein died in 1943). In it he details the highlights of all of his expeditions and his theories and conclusions. This makes the book a find for the reader who has enjoyed the Hopkirk book, but is perhaps put off by Stein's lengthier works. The reader is excited by the desert adventures and thrills to the drama of the archaeological finds, even if sometimes a bit horrified by the propensity to cut out paintings and haul them back to the British Museum or India, for which Stein has been strongly criticized. Eventually Stein's expeditions were stopped by Chinese authorities who had been tipped to this by an American archaeologist. But Stein was no pure treasure hunter and his tremendous scientific contributions are a great legacy for all interested in this field. A map covers all the regions of Stein's endeavors including the Hindu Kush, Pamirs, both routes through the Taklamakan Desert, ancient Lou-lan, the Lop Nor Sea, the furthest west portion of the Great Wall, Tun Huang, north of Tien Shan, Turfan, Kucha, Kashgar, the upper Oxus and Samarkand. 8 pages of monochrome plates show Tun Huang paintings, the expeditions in the desert, Niya's ruins, paintings at Miran and a clay figure from the Astana tombs.

I have always considered myself a fairly "fun" dad. Upon reading Legacy of joy the Lord has opened my eyes to so many other ways to enjoy my children, just by being happier in my responses to them. My wife and I have both noticed more laughter around the house and less television just by changing my attitude to one of joy and laughter instead of the rule maker of the house. In all seriousness, I can not think of one reason for a father not to fork out the $11.00 for this book!
If the writings of Mike and Norm stir only one thought it will be "Dads,... think about who you are, how you are blessed by your children and for Pete's sake,... do your best to bless them in return." What's more,.. is the book gives example after example of "Pro Dads". Dads that have done parenting well, men who are easy to admire and you can not help but want to emulate their wisdom in parenting! What a drink of cool water! In this time of ,... uh,.... less than emulatable (is that a word?)leadership in our country. (how's that for political correctness?)

This book was great!!! I reccomend this book to people of all ages. Just reading about the romance, and struggle of people a really long time ago... well, its a beautiful story. I loved the ending. It's such a typical ending to a Sweet Valley story! Be on the lookout for THE WAKEFIELD LEGANCY!! And don't miss a chance to read it!
An exciting rollercoaster of a Saga........2003-10-21
This Saga begins on the haunting moors of Wakefield, England. Theodore is promised to wed and inherit the estate of his father. This saga involve's Ned Wakefield's side of the family and is just as good as the first saga. This saga has it all-courage,daring and a rollercoaster ride of emotions. Alot of things don't end Happily Ever After and this book in my opionion is more mature and an intense read then the Sweet Valley Series where everything often has sunny, cheery endings. Given that I read this book about 8(?) years ago and still remember it after reading thousands of books since then says alot.
I also suggest for older readers the Fearless series which is also created by Francine Pascal
