Mother Of Stream of Consciousness Latin American Novels.......1998-08-22
Garcia-Marquez dictator combines within himself, the best and the worst, of the human being when invested with absolute power: from charity to corruption, benevolence to rape, fear of God to extreme cruelty. The (sparse) punctuation follows an almost strict fitting of the Poisson statistical distribution, page by page, and then amongst chapters, constituting this into both a textbook in literature and statistics. To some of us the most masterful novel of the Master Novelist of Meridian America.

Book Description
In this bilingual poetry book, Francisco X. Alarcón invites young readers to experience fall in Los Angeles — the City of the Angels — where dreams can come true. In the poet's whimsical imagination, mariachis play like angels, angels ride bikes, and the earth dances the cha-cha-cha. Alarcón celebrates the simple joys and trials of everyday life: a visit to the outdoor market, the arrival of the ice cream vendor, the first day of school. He honors his family and pays tribute to his mother, who taught him that with hard work and education he could realize his dreams.
Maya Christina Gonzalez's spirited images perfectly complement each poem, bringing to life the people and places in Alarcón's childhood.

Book Description
A trip out West to work at a racetrack — and a sojourn with a sophisticated gay uncle — bring unexpected discoveries in this quick-witted coming-of-age novel by the author of STONER & SPAZ and MARGAUX WITH AN X.
I was in the West. The Old West. The Wild West! A whole summer in a new place: a place away from my parents, a place so hot the girls probably wore bikinis to church, a place where I'd take a giant step toward my dream: becoming a vet. A place where — who knows? — anything might happen.
From the moment sixteen-year-old Billy steps off the train in Tucson, he knows this will be a summer unlike any he's seen in small-town Bradleyville, Missouri. For starters, he's staying with his cool gay uncle, who has managed to get him a job at the racetrack caring for horses. Still, Billy doesn't expect the horseracing world to be quite as rough and tumble as this — toiling side by side with a macho survivalist and falling hard for the feisty, romance-shy "exercise girl" Cara Mae. With his trademark fast-paced dialogue filled with wit and compassion, Ron Koertge tells the tale of an insecure teen who discovers that gaining stature involves more than Stetsons and boots — and that lessons on love and manhood come from the places you least expect.

I'm reading this for the 2nd time, and it's just as nice as when I read it the first time. I wish it was longer.
ARIZONA KID ROCKS!!!.......2003-04-15
This book is hilarious. The jokes, dialogue, and plot always kept me reading. I read it in one sitting and laughed so hard. I would recomend this book to anyone with a sense of humor.
Unlikely Mentor.......2001-07-31
Entwined in the story of summer love is a tale of the young man coming-of-age and an illustration of how we are all human. Billy travels from Missouri to there is on the to spend the summer with his uncle. His plan is to get some practical experience working with animals that would provide him with a big step toward fulfilling his childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian. When he first arrives he has no idea that his career plans will change, he will fall in love with a beautiful girl named Cara Mae, or that his gay uncle, Wes, will turn out to be the only person who can give him honest answers about life and love. Billy's story leaves the reader with no pat answers. But, then again, nobody has ever found truely pat answers for growing up. The novel provides points of departure for discussion with young adults about life, love, and themselves. It isn't a book that make every reader happy, but it can leave readers satisfied that life has more than one option.

Customer Reviews:
A valuable book because of the relationship of the author.......2002-07-27
The introduction to this book by J.C. Dyke is good, and explains a lot; especially the last paragraph, wherein he says,"The reading (and study) of [this book] is essential to an uderstanding of that mythical hero, the Robin Hood of the Southwest, who was once just a bucktoothed, thieving, murderous little cowboy-gone-bad, Billy the Kid."
Of course, the author, Pat Garrett, was not an unprejudiced reporter of events, for it was he who ended the life of William Bonney, also known as William Antrim (his foster father's surname). It is also interesting I think, in passing, to mention that Billy the Kid was not a product of the West, but a transplanted New Yorker.
Elsewhere, you will read that Pat Garrett's writing effort is poor, and leaves much to be desired. He readily admits it. In his own words, he says, "I make no pretension to literary ability, but propose to give to the public in intelligible English, 'a round, unvarnished tale,' unadorned with superfluous verbiage."
Garrett is motivated, he says, by an "impulse to correct the thousand false statements which have appeared in the newspapers and in yellow-covered cheap novels."
And, there is no doubt at all that the stories of Billy's exploits were greatly exaggerated by an Eastern press eager for stories of gunplay and adventure on the Western frontier. Today's myth of Billy the Kid is largely descended from the pulp stories created by the inflamed minds of Eastern "journalists" and the latter-day Hollywood screen-writers who have made no attempt at all to portray the truth.
Pat Garrett claims to have known Billy throughout the period known as the "Lincoln County Wars," and having listened to Bonney's reminiscences around campfires and says he has interviewed many persons since Bonney's death. That much would seem to be undisputed.
Bonney was born in 1859, six years after the birth of another Southwestern hardcase, John Wesley Hardin. In fact, they were contemporaries and were raising hell at the same time. Bonney, however, died young at the age of 21, in 1881. Hardin died at the age of 42--twice Billy's age--in 1895. And, if the rumors are true, Hardin probably killed twice as many men. They both started young. Both are reputed to have had fearful tempers. Neither were killed in the face-to-face "quick draw" shootouts so dear to the hearts of Hollywood writers. Instead, both of their executioners used stealth to kill their quarries.
According to Garrett, in Pete Maxwell's darkened bedroom, where he shot Billy to death, Billy was holding a butcher knife in one hand and drawing his double-action Colt "Lightning" revolver ("self-cocker") with the other, while asking in Spanish, "Quien es? Quien es?" ("Who is it? Who is it?") They were, again according to Garrett, at point blank range. The only other witness was Pete Maxwell. There are other versions to the story, including one which insists that Bonney was unarmed except for the knife, which he had used to cut off a chunk of beef from a hanging carcass outside, because he was hungry.
My question is this: it is undisputed that he was holding the knife, and the reason for which he had it. So, where was the beef? It is unlikely that he ate it raw, or stuck it in a pocket. Probably he was holding it in his other hand, intending to cook it. In which case, if he had a revolver tucked in his waistband, he must have had to drop the beef to fetch his revolver.
It is probably of little importance; a Billy Bonney armed with a butcher knife, at close quarters, would still have needed killing. But, did he make the fatal mistake of coming to a gunfight armed only with a knife?
I think that this is an important book, if for no other reason than the relationship that existed between the author and William Bonney. I recommend it. My version is in the hard cover.

Book Description
In the years after the Civil War, a Jewish family migrates westward, seeking a homestead and the freedom and security denied them in their native Russia. Led by Papa, a great scholar and mystic, and Mama, a pragmatic, loving woman, the family overcomes great hardship in their search for the promise of America - a home to call their own, a life free from oppression.
So begins the tale of young Ariel, a wise, serious and sometimes impulsive boy, determined to celebrate his Bar Mitzvah. Traversing the rugged, lawless American Southwest, Ariel encounters Lozen, the sister of the great Apache warrior chieftain Victorio. Becoming fast friends, Ariel and Lozen learn from one another how both peoples cling tenaciously and lovingly to their traditions and beliefs in the face of incredible challenges, and how the land around them is alive with wonder - and danger. Imprint: Seraphic Press.
Customer Reviews:
Avrech Strikes Gold in "The Hebrew Kid".......2006-09-01
Robert Avrech's first installment of the adventures of Ariel in the turbulent beginnings of the American Southwest isn't simply a book for young adults. It's an enjoyable must-read for adults -- Jewish and non-Jewish -- interested in Judaism in any way. His explanations of Jewish and Apache spirituality are simple without being simplistic, and are beautifully woven into the adventurous tale of a boy trying to learn how to be a man -- and a "mensch" -- in a dangerous world. Hopefully it won't be too long before we're able to enjoy Ariel's next journey!
Hope On the Range.......2006-02-24
An author's intellect too often outstrips his spirit. The observation, the wit, the rendered phrase will display polish, but the work as a whole may lack a certain, deeper luster. And it's that luster that fixes our attention - while we're reading the work and while it lives with us forever after. Fortunately, Robert Avrech's first children's novel is imbued with this kind of luster.
The Hebrew Kid and the Apache Maiden is an entertaining and inspiring tale honed with high craft and deep piety. Written by a career screenwriter for a primarily (though by no means exclusively) young, Jewish, male audience, it is at once plausible and improbable, silly and serious, magical and didactic. I read it one afternoon in a cafe, pausing only to wag its colorful cover in front of a few inquisitive onlookers while telling them that they too ("big people," like me) should read this. Did I adequately communicate this to the other "big people"? I can't say, because before finding out if I had, I let myself be transported again - under the sure, guiding author's hand - to that age....
Yet there's more going on - and at stake - in HKAM than quality entertainment. It has to do with Mr. Avrech's choice of setting the novel in the Arizona of the 1870s, thereby overlaying mass Jewish immigration with mass American expansion and the Indian Wars. It also has to do with the interwoven themes of coming of age, learning to handle firearms, and Jewish self-defense. For while the novel makes no pretense of speaking directly to other - mostly "big people" - works which treat some or all of these themes, HKAM reminds me, indirectly, of some other works that (in part or in whole) do treat them: Primo Levi's If Not Now, When?; Antek Zuckerman's A Surplus of Memory; Romain Gary's A European Education; Esther Forbes's Johnny Tremain; and any number of Hemingway stories. Yet by predating the 20th Century - and the Shoah - and by sticking to the Kid's point of view, Avrech helps preserve that degree of Orthodox Judaism's innocence and wonder and awe which frequently is beyond the scope of "big people" or less observant or 20th Century works. For, as the dedication offers, what's also at stake in this novel is the debt Mr. Avrech is attempting to repay to his departed son - the great inspiration for the Hebrew Kid.
The Hebrew Kid and the Apache Maiden is a mitzvah through and through. Purchase it in hardcover while you still can. You will want your copy to last as long as there are generations to come, generations which will always peer into the lives of past generations, wondering how to learn from them.
Cannot praise this book highly enough!.......2006-01-02
I'll admit, I bought THE HEBREW KID AND THE APACHE MAIDEN for my 12 year-old nephew, but I couldn't resist taking a peek myself. And, once I started it, I was hooked; couldn't put it down.
Author Robert Avrech has crafted a marvelous plot. He weaves together the history of the Jews with details about traditional anti-Semitism--both in Europe and in the United States--along with lore about the American Wild West of the 19th Century.
This novel is a work which combines great imagination with scholarly research.
Every page here is an adventure, starting with Apaches on the war path and moving on to Mexican desperadoes. The reader, especially the younger reader, definitely will learn much about the Jewish religion as a result of reading this book.
According to the author's biography, he already is a successful screenwriter. I have read novels written by great authors, and I have seen screenplays written by great screenwriters, and THE HEBREW KID AND THE APACHE MAIDEN is the equal of the best of them.
Robert Avrech dedicated this book to the memory of his son.
A wonderful tale of love and adventure!.......2005-09-24
The book is captivating from beginning to end. This book is a wonderful example of what books for young people should be. It covers the full range of emotion; love, passion, fear, etc. It examines bigotry in it's characters as well as brotherhood amongst 'strangers'. It would be well that the parent reads the book as well, because it might open up many as yet unaddressed topics of conversation. I loved it!
Filling a need for Jewish children.......2005-08-15
Religious Jewish children who love to read often find themselves with a limited range of literary choices. Secular books contain unsuitable themes or material; books published for a religious audience are didactic or poorly written. Robert Avrech is beginning to fill this gap with the Hebrew Kid series, written in memory of his son Ariel. The story is engaging, its telling natural, and the message lovely and appropriate for children of any background.

Book Description
This thoroughly researched work offers a newand refreshingly realisticlook at the famous outlaw. Having combed interviews, memoirs, and primary documents, Weddle examines the family and community that produced Billy. He also debunks a number of misconceptions and falsehoods. Billy's childhood buddies in Silver City, New Mexico, remembered a smart, ambitious youth with a strong, loving mother and a distant stepfather. Acquaintances at Camp Grant, Arizona Territory, knew a resourceful teenager versed in the lawless ways of frontier survival. Both perspectives add up to a vivid and very human story. Previously unpublished photographs round out this volume.
"Jerry Weddle, master researcher and consummate grassroots historian, has made a major contribution to Billy the Kid scholarship. This book is must reading for anyone interested in the historical Billy."Professor Paul Andrew Hutton, Executive Director, The Western History Association
Customer Reviews:
insightful and touching - I think Billy would like it.......2001-05-09
I wasn't sure what to expect, being a devoted fan of Billy I can get very sensitive about material on him which I believe is false or slanderous. I know a good book when I read one, and this was a fabulous one. This did not claim, as so many articles , books and films do, that Billy killed 21 men,(he didn't, although he probably shot that many)or that he was a vicious psycho (he wasn't, he was a gentle, kind, likeable person). this book also dispelled some of the many lies and untruths told about Billy's reputation. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Billy the Kid or anyone who wants to read a real story without historical hearsay.
