    Book Description

The effects of disturbed ecosystems, from devastating algal blooms to the loss of whale populations, have demonstrated the vulnerability of the oceans¿ biodiversity. Conservation of marine systems requires knowledge from many different fields in order to understand the complex interactions that threaten those systems. Dynamic Modeling for Marine Conservation provides a method of learning how these systems function, determining how natural and human actions have put them in peril and how we can best influence the marine world in order to maintain biodiversity. The difficulties of research and experimentation in the oceans make computer modeling particularly helpful for marine conservation. Modeling also enables scientists to communicate their findings with managers and others concerned with putting their ideas into practice. The book will demonstrate dynamic modeling through the use of the STELLA modeling program and case studies from marine conservation. After a section devoted to the concepts and tools needed to model marine systems, each chapter introduces background information about a key topic in marine conservation, presents an appropriate model, and discusses the results and implications. Contributors bring a wide range of expertise and experience to a selection of models relevant to real-world conservation problems. All models and a run-time version of the STELLA software are included with the book on a CD-ROM, which is compatible with both Macintosh and Window platforms.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is THE Book to have on a topic of global importance!.......2003-02-21

This book sublimely inspired me as few others have done. In my own personal collection of greatest books on the environment, I'd put Silent Spring, Wilderness and the American Mind, Sand County Almanac, works of A. Lovins--and precious few others; I'd personally rank this book among these very best.

What this book does beautifully is to range across marine disciplines in a way that's at once understandable, quite managable, and also scientifically persuasive. We all presume to know know something of the environment from day to day living--but what we haven't been exposed to is the existence (and great importance of) global marine biological diversity in all it's facets. (Especially the wondrous curious biodiversity of deep seas). This book has opened my eyes to new ways of seeing how the sea around us works, and drawn me with great interest to the address the compelling biodiversity that Dr. Norse describes.

I consider this book "A Must read" for any academic courses on the topic, and highly recommend it to both practitioners and anyone interested in the diverse ways of the sea. In my own 20 year career in marine biodiversity, I can think of no more seminal book than this one: it insightfully and brilliantly opens the marine realm to readers as a timeless classic.

Bravo to Dr. Norse & the Marine Conservation Biology Institute!

        Book Description

Subtropical convergence regions in the southwestern Atlantic have a high biological productivity, and are important as nursery and feeding areas and as reproduction grounds for fishery stocks of subtropical and antarctic origin. This book represents the first multidisciplinary treatise of this large and complex marine ecosystem. It analyses how subtropical convergence and land-sea interactions influence the coast, and sea and their biota. Synthesizing the rapidly expanding information, it provides a comprehensive appraisal of the biological resources, an assessment of their sustainable exploitation, and an evaluation of oceanographic processes. An inventory of all marine taxa in the southwestern Atlantic is included as an appendix.

          Description:
The abundance of aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic bacteria (AAPB), a new functional group that plays important roles in marine carbon cycling, is determined frequently by infrared epifluorescence microscopic analysis (IREM) or high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) based on detecting BChl a (bacteriochlorophyll a) fluorescence signal at 880 nm. Unfortunately, the fluorescence signal is often influenced by environmental variables and physiological state of cell. Here we developed a real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay based on pufM gene to specifically quantify AAPB in marine environments. High specificity and sensitivity for estimation of AAPB abundance were revealed by analysis of amplification products, melting curves and target sequences. The phylogenetic tree indicated that this primer set is suitable for a wide genetic diversity of AAPB, including @a-3, @a-4 Proteobacteria and clones of unclear taxonomic position. In contrast, no amplicon was obtained from green non-sulphur bacteria and oxygenic phototrophic bacteria such as Cyanobacterial genomic DNA. The melting behavior could indicate predominant phenotypes in AAPB community in addition to validating the products of qPCR. The AAPB was estimated to range from 1.3x10^4 cell/ml to 3.4x10^5 cell/ml in our 10 tested water samples by this qPCR assay. Further investigations on the abundance distribution of AAPB in marine environments using the qPCR assay may provide new insight into their ecological functions.

Hitchcock Sewell is back in one of the funniest and most fast-paced novels yet in Tim Cockey's celebrated award-winning series. A man has been murdered in his kitchen. And the apparent killer wants Hitch to scoop up the body and take it away....before the police have arrived. Meanwhile, across town, Hitch smells a rat-maybe two-in the nursing home where an old friend of his has taken up residence. With his matchless wit and uncommon ability to dig out the truth, Hitch is once again up to his old tricks....and mystery readers couldn't be happier.

4 out of 5 stars good afternoon read.......2006-06-19

Lots of slapstick humor that in the first half helps the story along and even makes you laugh now and again. I can't decide if I laugh because it just gets so stupid, or if it's really funny--but the mystery was decent and tied together nicely. This isn't deep reading, but it is a fun read. Towards the end, I found myself skipping paragraphs--you're in the middle of action, can't wait to find out what is going to happen and the author goes off on a tangent describing a place or someone's hair. I'm all for tension, but this went overboard. Still, this is an author you can take along during a plane ride--you can count on a good old fashioned fun mystery.

Tim Cockey also writes as Richard Hawke (Speak of the Devil)--and it's a series worth a look. The wit is there rather than slapstick humor. The mystery is a bit darker, the tough guy a bit tougher.

                                5 out of 5 stars Backstabbing fun.......2005-09-16

As usual, Tim Cocky was full of fun and mystery in a well-blended story. His novels crack me up and this one was no exception. His stories are fast-paced and his humor is equally quick. I love this book, just as I've loved his others.

1 out of 5 stars Same ole, same ole.......2005-09-07

The sexual exploits of an alchoholic undertaker are the focus of all of Tim Cockney's Hitchcock Sewell mystery novels. All one has to do if interested in any kind of mystery/murder storyline is to skip to the last 6 or so pages and read the plot synopsis ala Agatha Christe. The rest of the book is fluff.

5 out of 5 stars A great Who Done It.......2004-12-14

After reading the first four pages, I was HOOKED. I thought if the rest of the book was as intriguing as those few pages, I would not be able to put the book down until I discovered "Who Done It". And, I was right. I also thought the plot was going to be a simple one where the reader discovers who killed the victim. Boy! Was I wrong! The plot was a spider's web of intrigue. There was more than one murder to learn about and plenty of characters to keep you guessing on who killed who.

The first victim was found with a knife in his back. Between his wife, daughter, son and mother, the less than normal family was discovered. The man's love letters were found in his library and they were not written to his wife. Ah ha, another possible killer. The story had dead people who are frozen into a sitting position, bright orange burial caskets, a nursing home where the patient are starting to complain about their care, seagulls, a pet dog and a few broken ribs, not to mention an ex-wife who our lead character was still on friendly terms.

The wisecracking which ran throughout the book, reminded me of the 1940's stereotypical private eye. It was wonderfully refreshing and gave the reader a laugh at every turn. The lead character's job was also not one normally associated with someone who "snoops". He was a funeral director in partnership with his Aunt. Right up until the very last pages, I had no idea who created all the mayhem. Oh, I had chosen early on who I thought was responsible but then I changed my mind as I read on and continued changing my mind the farther I read.

I noted that Tim Cockey as written four other books based on the lead character. I was sorry I hadn't read them but they will be on my list of books to read. Grab a copy of Backstabber and you will be in for a wonderful adventure of Who Done It.

                                3 out of 5 stars Surprisingly different..........2004-10-21

That's what I have to say about Tim Cockey's latest novel, BackStabber. Although I had a hard time getting into the book at first, after the first few chapters I decided to keep going in hopes the plot would take enough of a turn to keep me interested. I had no idea where this author was headed when he jumped from a murder scene to picking up a cadaver in a nursing home where he met up with a resident who happened to be an older lady acquaintance. And there were some scenes that I just couldn't buy. But then again, it's fiction. So I gave Mr. Cockey the benefit of a doubt and kept going. And the story began to take on different twists and turns. I did think it got to be a bit too wordy at times, but I managed to skip over what I thought was just that...too wordy.
However, I thought the character of Hitchcock Sewell was well developed. It's a shame the author stuck a name like Hitchcock on such a handsome hunk of a man. I have a thing about the names, and if the hero is described as a handsome hunk, then I think his name should fit the description as well. And let's face it, there's just nothing sexy about a name like Hitchcock. No offense meant, of course. I wish now I'd read this author's debut novel instead of this latest published novel. And I may do that yet. I think Mr. Cockey is a very talented writer. The prose flows well, and he displays a keen sense of humor along with his ideas for an excellent plot. I was quite surprised when I'd finished the book to learn how he'd managed to bring the plot of this particular story all together. I just hope he doesn't get into a rut by writing too many Hitchcock Sewell mysteries, because I think Mr. Cockey has too much talent not to write something different.

                                  Book Description

Did Lewis and Clark really matter? What does it take to become a dictator's son, or a MacArthur Genius Grant awardee? Why is baseball always dying? Answers abound in Backstabbers, Crazed Geniuses, and Animals We Hate: fifty razor-sharp, contrarian looks at today's cultural landscape.

Drawing on seven years of Slate's Assessment column, editor David Plotz has compiled a pop-culture reference guide to everyone from L. Ron Hubbard to Scooby-Doo, everything from Bill O'Reilly's secret snobbery to the sudden newsworthiness of a little gland called the prostate.

Both Mother Nature and Lobbyists are "Backstabbers." "Crazed Geniuses"? Antonin Scalia and the Cirque du Soleil, to name a few. And when it comes to the common ground between Frank Sinatra and Jesus Christ, they're "Dead, but Won't Go Away." Hilarious and brilliant, Backstabbers, Crazed Geniuses and Animals We Hate offers an incisive take on the society you thought you knew. (Did you know, for instance, that Kim Jong-Il has long been rumored to have a fondness for blondes?)

I have to say keep your friends away from your man. Don't tell your friends anything about the sexlife with your friends, cause they might just want to sample his goods. At least thats what the books says. LoL.

Alexis really needed to kick Simones man. She always wants what someone else has. She was really wrong for sleeping with Alexis man.

IF you want to read some hellish drama. then this is the book for you.

This book was a great read. It was good to finally find a book with a great story line and characters that seemed "real". We watched these friends go through struggles internally and externally and it was great reading about an older version of the group (the mothers). I recommend this book to anyone who is in search of an excellent read.

I liked this book. Mostly it revolved around the Liz, Tia, Conner love triangle in which Conner is mostly the culprit. I mean, yeah Tia knew he had a girlfriend, but he initiates it in book 16 and this book. The fault is 60% Conner, 40% Tia, yet Tia seems to get the "short end of the stick" so to speak when it comes to Liz's cooling off. She's not totally over it as we see in a later book when she gets in Tia's face. Jade and Jeremy begin to be interested in each other to Jessica's somewhat well-hidden dismay. Conner's drinking turns heavy and he does something that causes some problems and mixed signals in book 18 in which he shares his true feelings; however, most people agree that when you're drinking your true feelings come out...Go out and get the book!

5 out of 5 stars Book 17 in SVH Senior Year Series.......2003-05-02

After catching Conner McDermott and Tia Ramirez in bed together in the previous book ("Three Girls and a Guy"), Elizabeth Wakefield is ready to call it quits with Conner--and Tia, for that matter--not that I blame her.

While these three are in a major turmoil, Jeremy Aames hits it off well with the new House of Java employee, Jade Wu, to Jessica Wakefield's dismay, even though Jeremy and Jess have been broken up for weeks now. Jade also seems to bringing the unruly side of him out, which may or may not be a good thing, especially when she almost gets him in trouble at work.

Most of the emphasis in "Backstabber" is on Conner, Tia, and Elizabeth. That's all well and good (though I'm disliking Conner more and more with each new book), but what happened to another big issue at hand: Andy Marsden's being gay, which was revealed in the previous book? That didn't go into depth at all here, just a couple journal entries by him. I'm still surprised that such a topic would be brought up in a Sweet Valley book, but it's a storyline I really look forward to watching unfold, especially since Andy's one of my favorite characters.

I personly liked the book very much,It added a twist so thatit did'nt get borring . Example, Liz finds conner & Tia in bed together , Conner starts drinking , Andy Breaks up with six , Andy's Thinks He Might Be [homosexual] ,Jeremy Hooks Up With Jade , Jessica gets Jealous , And A interesting thing Happens to will and Evan.*And another good point, Melissais not Mentioned alot* Its filled with suspense , and action .Its a awesome MUST read book!

                                  4 out of 5 stars A Good Buy!.......2000-07-22

I personally feel that this book it's worth a buy this is because the author finally give us some answers which have kept us in suspense almost everytime on the other series.Like the one between Tia and Conner who think that they might have feelings for each another. As for Jeremy i felt that the author has finally gave the poor guy a chance after being dump by Jessica for Will he finally might find someone that he really like and worth liking too.Anyway thumbs up to the author for creating this series.I'll definitely recommend all this to my other Malaysian friends.

4 out of 5 stars this book was good ,but a little dissapointing.......2000-07-07

in this book tia , finds out she has other feeligs for conner. if you read #16 (3 girls and a guy) you will know why everyone is soticked off at tia and conner. also andy starts to question his sexuality.this wasn't talked about alot in the book. jade and jermey start being really close and jessica is annoyed and jealous.i like this book especially the last chapeter.
