Book Description
This handsome text offers in-depth profiles of parakeets from their wild origins in the Australian Outback to details of their breeding, care, and general well-being in captivity. The many varieties of parakeets are covered in detail with 160 vivid color photos-many of which are dramatic action shots.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty Good Book.......2006-09-11
This is a good parakeet ownership book for beginner parakeet owners, but some information seems to be outdated. I had questions after reading the book that were not answered in the text.
Best.......2005-10-16
We bought five parakeet care books after looking at a bunch of them. Of the five, this is the best.
The information is extensive, accurate, and up to date. The glossy photos are great. Most of the stuff we have learned in our intense initiation is contained in this book. This remains our go-to resource for parakeet questions.
Everything you need to take care of your little Budgie..........2005-01-09
Matthew Vriends, consulting editor for THE COMPLETE BOOK OF PARAKEET CARE and a Veterinary and Bird Breeder from the Netherlands has written many books on Companion Parrots, as have authors Annette Wolter and Monika Wegler. Their book about parakeets really covers the "betcherrygah" or budgie, a type of Australian parakeet, and includes much more material than any of the other parakeet books I've read to date, and I believe it deserves the sobriquet `comprehensive'. The book includes a good deal of the information found in other books by Vriends and Wolters on basic bird care and breeding, as well as much specific information about parakeets or budgies divulged by Wolter and Wegler who appear to keep companion parakeets or budgies indoors (Vriends raises birds in an outdoor aviary).
The book includes dozens of beautiful photos and sections covering parakeets and human children, setting up parakeet accommodations for a pair (they hate to live alone) health care and diet, breeding and baby bird care. The photos show the various colors of budgies generated by breeders like Vriends as well as action shots of budgies in all phases of living in your home - from flying around a `bird-proof' room to courting rituals with a mate. The authors have created a `check list' the potential parakeet owner can use to determine if he or she can live with the requirements of keeping a companion budgie. Among other things, they stress that parakeets are probably better off spending more time outside the cage than in it, so if you are thinking about living with a parakeet you should consider whether or not you can put up with with the occasional bird dropping from a soaring feathered friend. Photos and text describe how to build a bird tree from which your birds can use to launch their explorations as well as return to enjoy a tasty snack of various vegetables and/or fruits.
If you can buy only one parakeet (budgie) book get this book before you buy your parakeet. The book is suitable for children ages 6-8 or older as it includes text in 10p. font and plenty of photos describing budgie behavior.
Very Practical and Easy to read for all ages.......2003-10-25
We bought a couple of parakeets for our 11 year old daughter (a real Southern Belle). The birds and book were a birthday present and knowing absolutely nothing about them, this book has been a great help. Our daughter read it and enjoyed it. Easy to read, for all ages. It helped us buy the cage, the toys, and the birds' nutrition and so on... She still reads it when she has a question (as we do also). It helped us when organizing our home decoration and candles to fit the flights of the birds. Being in a small southern town away from pet stores, we refer to this book often. Some dangerous, outdated information.......2002-12-07
Overall the book is okay.
The playtree idea was very helpful in constructing the massive tree I now have, the pictures are beautiful, and there's a lot of interesting trivia.
HOWEVER, some of the advice given in this book is outdated and is now known to be rather dangerous.
1) The offering of grit. Budiges, and other hookbilled parrots, do NOT need grit as part of their diet, as they hull their seeds. If they are on a formulated diet they also do not need grit. Grit offered to these birds can cause crop impactions and death. Given that it's not necessary for digestion, there is no reason to use it.
2) Sandpaper perches. Big NO! Sandpaper perches are very hard on the feet and do not "keep nails trim". Sandpaper perches are one of the big causes of bumblefoot.
3) The use of "bird sand"...see grit.
4) The implication that clipping a bird's wings is cruel. The risks associated with free flight far outweigh the risks associated with clipping. Flighted birds are more likely to become injured by flying into walls, mirrors, windows, doors, etc..true, they may know the house layout, but if something should spook them and they take off in a panic, they are literally flying blind.
Full flight also carries the risk of escape; being nomadic birds, budgies have no homing instinct. Once your budgie flies away, your chances of seeing it alive again are next to zero.
The biggest risk of clipping is the bird being accidentally stepped on, but if you keep your bird off the floor (and you should) this isn't an issue.
5) The advocation of a mainly seed or seed only diet. Seed only diets are dangerous to the point of being lethal in the terms of long term health. Budgies, when well cared for and on a good diet, can easily live 10-15 years. On a poor diet, cut that in half for the average lifespan.
For more information on any of the above:
http://budgies-n-tiels.com
When this book was written in 1994, much of the now erroneous information was thought to be correct. Avian medical science has proven a lot of it very, dangerously wrong since the time this book was published.

Parakeets (Complete Pet Owner's Manuals).......2007-01-08
I had thought that I knew a lot about the care and feeding of parakeets, this book showed me much more.
informative but not complete.......2006-06-26
Some of the information is great, but it still left me with questions. So the title "A Complete Pet Owner's Manual" is misleading.
It does have good information on diet and health and exercise.
But it seems like an overview. But I was looking for more than an overview. The title should be "Parakeets, an overview for the new owner" More details please!
Parakeets A Complete Pet Owner's Manual .......2005-02-12
I LOVE this BOOK! It is quite informative. I do wish to obtain additional books on parakeets.
I wish these books had been around when I was growing up! i LOVE these animals. Their so cretive and unique in their own little ways thought they really are n ot small at all!
Thanak you.
An educational manual.......2004-12-20
Authored by Annette Wolter, this manual on parakeets was published in 1999. There are 87 pages. Eight chapters are contained. Numerous color photos and black-and-white drawings are provided. Also, an index is included. The anecdotes the author supplies are informative. Examples of topics covered are tips on purchasing, bathing, care, toys, diet, health, breeding, cages, taming, teaching the parakeet how to talk, intelligence, and behavior. I find the chapter focusing on behavior to be instructive and fascinating. In addition, two tables are displayed; one deals with dangers to the parakeet, while the other deals with health problems. The color photos of the parakeets are pleasing. As for the black-and-white drawings, they are impressive and educational. I recommend this manual.
There's a better book for a similar price..........2004-02-26
Unfortunately, Barron's has a tendency to publish same-subject books in both this series and in their top-of-the-line "Handbook" series, and the topic of Parakeets is no exception. They have, in fact, printed two books on Parakeets in this series (one about Budgies, which are the same species) and a Parakeet Handbook (which is co-authored by both of the writers involved in this series' books).
Annette Wolter's style is one that is easy-to-read, but it is still quite informative. Had I not read "The Parakeet Handbook" first, I would have learned much from this book. However, as it is reasonably priced, well-written and informative, I can recommend it with few reservations.

Book Description
The budgerigar, better known in America as the parakeet or the budgie, is among the most popular birds kept as pets. Here is information on the budgerigar in its native habitat, plus expert advice on caging, feeding, breeding, health maintenance, and protecting the bird from accidents and hazards.
Customer Reviews:
excellent book.......2007-10-14
I am building a parakeet library in preparation of buying a budgie for my 5 and 7 year olds. This book is visually appealing and easy to read. Nice, shiny pages with up-to-date, beautiful photographs with excellent information and details. Not just the usual chapter-by-chapter book. It has special pages with colored sections and various formating making this a fun book to read.
Budgies and Parakeets...........2005-01-02
As far as I am concerned, when it comes to books on pet birds, Barron's is the best. BUDGERIGARS by Immanuel Birmelin (translated by Matthew Vriends) falls into this category, although it is somewhat condensed compared with other books on the market. Birmelin covers all the important issues, such as caging, food, and other aspects of care.
My favorite section is about "playing" with your pet Budgie. Budgies are intelligent little parrots and you can have hours of fun if you choose to by providing them with sources of amusement. Birmelin lists `The 10 Most Popular Games' you can play with your Budgie and "How-To: Fun and Games." Did you know you could play card games with Budgies?
Although we never want to think about the possibility, sometimes your Budgie gets sick. Birmelin includes a section "If Your Bird Gets Sick" that gives you some ideas of what you can do besides get upset. In this section he includes a `Checklist - Preventing Illness' which is helpful especially if this is your first bird. Keeping his cage clean is a good thing to do, and spending time with him every day will keep him happy. A happy Budgie is a healthy Budgie.
The Best Book for Budgerigars!!.......2003-03-03
When I went to Singapore for vacation, I got this book about
budgerigars. I have a blue budgerigar (parakeet) and I just got her
recently. I didn't know much about birds, so when I read this book
I could find out all sorts of things about budgerigars. This book
tells about budgerigars' home, how to train them, their enviroment,
what kind of food and cage they should have, and how to take care of
your budgerigar so that he/she would be happy.
At the back of the page, it tells some interesting facts about
budgerigars. One of them is:
Budgerigar means good bird, or good food. They come from Australia,
and the native people eat budgerigars.
There is also a list of most of the budgerigar books and magazines at
the back. You should get this book because it's really good if you
want to have a healthy and happy bird!!!

Best For a Parakeet Beginner.......2001-07-05
Best book for beginners! Info filled all the way!
A slim, well-indexed guide that's great for quick answers.......1999-01-24
Our family has been living with parakeets for about four years now and we refer to this book on at least a weekly basis for answers to various questions about diet, socialization and behavior. It's very well-indexed --(E.g., Should your budgie have broccoli? Just look under "vegetables") -- which makes using the slim volume easy and productive. It isn't very detailed or tremendously scientific, but for the average parakeet owner/lover, it's a good little book to keep under your cage next to your millet spray!
good introduction!.......1999-01-07
If you've never owned a parakeet before, this might be the best place to start...lots of basic background information, will encourage you to read more about budgies and, if you haven't already, go out and buy one (or several!) Recommended! Also, very cute photographs and nice presentation.

Lorna Padgett, an archeologist's daughter, has inherited her father's love for ancient Egypt. Ameni lived over four thousand years ago. The son of a Pharoah, he loved adventure but had no idea what destiny the gods were holding for him. These two should never have met. But a walk in the hills near her father's dig leads Lorna into strange territory--and to an ancient discovery that brings timeless adventure, mystery, and danger....

Good job; could have been better.......2007-01-21
The sister of a friend lent me this book, and I was pleased because books about Egypt are so rare. However, it could have been a lot better. I found some of the dialogue between Ameni and Lorna to be a little bit unbelievable, and I felt like large chunks of it had been omitted, perhaps to make sure the book stayed short.
I also disliked that the author felt compelled to explain the Egyptian gods' reality in a Christian world. It would have been better if she had left it up to us to decide.
Other than those problems, I felt like overall, the plot was good. It won't rank as one of my all-time favorite books, but I'll probably wind up buying it eventually.
Well Written but Espouses Universalism.......2006-06-27
Book is well written, will keep kids' attention, and is morally good. Unfortunately it espouses the religious doctrine of Universalism, i.e., all gods are the same and all one must do to obtain eternal life is to be sincere in his belief of the particular god(s) of his choosing/culture.
The book is about a 14-year-old Egyptian Pharaoh (12th dynasty, approx. 4,000 years ago) who was placed in time limbo in order to protect two alabaster jars which contain all the contents deemed necessary by the priests to preserve eternal life for all Egyptians, past, present & future. Ameni's role, his destiny, was to protect these two alabaster jars, and ensure that they both stay within Egypt's borders.
Enter late 20th century Lorna, 14-year-old daughter of an archaeologist who specializes in ancient Egypt. While exploring an excavation, a "fortuitous" landslide occurred which revealed to her Ameni's tomb. Ameni's coffin and the two alabaster jars along with many other artifacts are shipped to an institute in Cairo; part of the artifacts, including one of the alabaster jars, is shipped to the institute's London office.
After a horrendous thunderstorm, Ameni comes to life. He and Lorna follow the alabaster jar to London where it was stolen. The gods help Ameni to find the stolen jar and in the process discovers that "It must be life, not the trappings of death, that secures eternity. Surely people, whatever their gods, find eternity in their beliefs and actions in life . . . [you have found the truth.] Gods are one. Even as human needs give gods different forms, so it is the lives of people, not their rituals, that win their immortality." (180-181)
it was OKAY.......2005-02-03
we had to read this book for 7th grade at our school. it's kinda stupid, but kinda good. I personally thought that we should have known more about how Ameni ended up in a sealed sarcophagus and was still 'alive'. Whatever. It was a good book...sort of.
Pamela F. Sevice's Best!!!.......2003-09-13
I first read this book last year, after my best friend reccomended it to me. We were both (and still are) Ancient Egypt enthusiasts, and so this was a good book for us to read. And we both loved it! Lorna and Ameni make such a cool team. I love the discriptions of Ancient Egypt and Ameni's adventures. This book's full of detail, and the characters are all well-developed. It'll make you laugh out loud, and it will make you cry or even sob. It's my favorite book by this author, and it's one of the top 5 of my favorite books of all time!!! You've got to read this book, even if you're not interested in Ancient Egypt, but in a good realistic fiction/fantesy story that will leave you wanting more. About that: WHAT HAPPENS??? Aghh, I wanna know!

Randy's Review.......2002-12-20
This book is the best thing I ever read. I liked all the action and all of the surprises.
I think the people who will read this book will like it very much; when I read this book I could not put it down.
People who love mystery books will like this book, too.
The Reluctant God is about a boy named Ameni and he is held back in time. When he awoke, he had to find these sacred items he was told to protect. Find out what his life was like in the future.

Wide-ranging interdisciplinary scope.......2001-12-16
Stephen Blaha's book on the compatibility of science and religion covers a wide scope. Moving effortlessly from the deepest theories of the nature of the universe, through linguistics and computer science and on to religion, Blaha tries to show that all of modern physics, the so-called Theory of Everything, can be expressed as the reading of a sentence in a language with symbols and grammar, somewhat like computer programs in Java are parsed and read by compilers on computers.
The evolution of the universe, from the Big Bang to the present and into the future, is determined by the language determining the physics of this theory. In this way, Blaha argues, it is really literally true that "In the beginning was the Word."
The book does not just restrict itself to science and religion. Blaha also provides a stimulating and yet thoughtful account of all sorts of spiritual phenomena that are often regarded by scientists as unproven superstition. He tries to show how they can fit into the scientific framework.
Many scientists claim that science and religion are in conflict, or at best have nothing to do with each other. Blaha's book provides a self-aware account of how a deep belief in the practice of the scientific method can live in harmony with a religious or spiritual nature and with a pragmatic willingness to examine all phenomena in the world without prejudice. As a side benefit, it also provides a high-level and entertaining account of the way physicists think about the universe. I recommend it strongly to anyone with an open mind who "believes" in science and yet senses that there is something else behind the appearances too.
A Fascinating Study!.......2001-11-20
Are science and religion diametrically opposed to one another when it comes to God? It's a truism that science deals with matter and its causes, while religion deals with the spirit. In his insightful new book "The Reluctant Prophets: Has Science Found God?" Dr. Stephen Blaha challenges the concept that science and religion are opposites, and instead looks for a common ground that unites their efforts. He finds it in the notion of "the Word." Just as religion sees the universe as originating in "the Word of God," so science sees the universe in linguistic terms, indeed as one powerful word. His exploration of the Word in religion and in science is tantalizing; and his suggestion, in the second part of the book, that phenomena which we ordinarily think of as spiritual may be considered in a scientific way, is truly fascinating. Looking at these phenomena scientifially, he says, by no means debunks their religious validity, but rather enhances it by adding to it a new and exciting dimension to the search for Truth. Thus seen, religion and science become partners in the search for ultimate reality, rather than opponents.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book for the groundbreaking concepts it offers. Dr. Blaha is himself something of a prophet, for he challenges the commonly accepted and instead shows how these two pillars of human thought converge in their search for the ultimate. In other words, we do not need to abandon religion in order to embrace science; and we do not need to abandon science when we embrace religion. And all of this in clear and simple language that makes this important discovery available to all. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Why are so many baby boomers tuned into a quest for spirituality? How did growing up with the Bomb influence a generation's view of science and spirit? What effects did psychedelic drugs have on American spirituality? What is the difference between open-mindedness and gullibility? Is God a necessary part of a religious life? Is atheism merely a negation of religious belief, or is it something more? Waiting for God challenges us to become the God we seek: Like Prometheus, Bush steals the Heavenly Fire, and treasures a vision of planting it in his own heart and the hearts of his fellow men. Waiting for God offers a probing look at the generational factors - growing up with the Bomb, psychedelic drugs, environmental crisis, and more - that led the Woodstock generation down the path of spirituality. Waiting for God grasps, from an atheist's perspective, the sense of human interconnection that defines contemporary spirituality and poses challenges for skeptics and humanists to provide spiritual leadership in a hungry age.
