Workplace Bullying: A Costly Business Secret

Book Description
Over the last decade or so research into bullying, emotional abuse and harassment at work, as distinct from harassment based on sex or race and primarily of a non-physical nature, has emerged as a new field of study. Two main academic streams have emerged: a European tradition applying the concept of 'mobbing' or 'bullying' and the American tradition, primarily identified through concepts such as emotional abuse and mistreatment. One focuses on the perpetrator, the other on the victim. In addition, research in this field has also started in Australia and South Africa. All are brought together in this work, in a synthesis of research and analysis of practice in the field. Bullying and Emotional Abuse in the Workplace aims to document the existence and consequences of the problem of bullying, to explore its causes and to investigate the effectiveness of approaches aimed at mitigating and managing the problem, as well as to offer suggestions for further progress in this important new field.
Book Description
Help your students understand the mysteries of human behavior with Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman's text. Now available with a personalized online learning plan, this social work-specific book looks at lifespan through the lens of social work theory and practice. The authors use an empowerment approach to cover human development and behavior theories within the context of family, organizational, and community systems. Using a chronological lifespan approach, the authors present separate chapters on biological, psychological, and social impacts at the different lifespan stages with an emphasis on strengths and empowerment.
Customer Reviews:
Promoting a Political Agenda.......2007-09-22
This text exposes a political agenda citing "facts" without supporting evidence. Too many examples exist to enumerate but as an example p 206 states that the Justice system in America is an oxymoron since African Americans represent 12% of the population and comprise 50% of the incarcerated population. If this is due to a racist justice system the text certainly does not expose the underlying reasons; nor does it even cite a reference! It acknowledges, only parenthetically, that there is considerable debate as to the extent of racism vs. differential crime rates by race as accounting for the above-mentioned statistical discrepancy.
The text repeatedly emphasizes, and in fact almost singles out, that the United States is a racist country. The text, repeatedly, makes mention that Abraham Lincoln was a racist.
I would recommend 'Human Behavior in the Social Environment' by Longres as a far superior substitute.
This book should have no place in any respectable learning environment.

Book Description
Despite the constraints and challenges imposed by managed care, many psychodynamic clinicians are finding ways to work successfully within this pervasive type of health care arrangement. This clear, straightforward book shows how. Grounded in the authors' high professional standards and commitment to psychodynamic principles, the book provides the information and guidance that therapists need to communicate effectively with managed care decision makers, maximize the likelihood of obtaining treatment authorization, and adapt to the demands of time-limited treatment. Extensive case material and concrete examples illustrate ways to "translate" case formulations, treatment plans, and reports into an alternative functional language more readily accepted by managed care, without compromising the psychodynamic conceptual framework. A range of brief dynamic therapy models and techniques are described, and their implications for managed care practice are explored. Clinicians also learn how to present an empirically based rationale and appropriate documentation for their services; select and make use of treatment outcome measures; and deal with clinical and ethical dilemmas that are likely to arise. Useful appendices list additional resources for clinicians and include a glossary of health care and health insurance terminology.

Dennis and Michelle Reina, principals in an organization-development firm, believe more productive and rewarding work environments will emerge if relationships that define them are truly built on trust. The problem they see is years of "downsizing, restructuring, and reengineering or of upsizing, mergers, and growth" that frequently result in minor misreadings of intention along with major breaches of promise--followed all too often by seriously diminished employee performance. The solution they propose in Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace is that leaders must develop a full understanding of the complex dynamics involved, and commit to practices that support building trust with employees. The book addresses the aspects of betrayal and trust, the bulk of it focused on "transactional trust" (which they define as "managing expectations, establishing boundaries, delegating appropriately, encouraging mutually serving intentions, keeping agreements, and being congruent in our behavior") and ways to build it among teams and groups as well as entire organizations. The authors conclude with a section on "transformational trust," the ultimate stage attained when trust within these levels "reaches a critical point and increases exponentially, becoming self-generating and synergistic." This is smart food for thought, supported by tools and techniques that can put it into practice. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace explores the concept of trust: the successes when it exists, the problems when it doesn't, and the pain when it is betrayed. Utilizing a new, research-based model, with suggestions and exercises that will yield immediate results, this handbook helps leaders and employees understand the dynamics of trust and betrayal and then take action.

Trust & Betrayal in the Workplace: Building Effective Relationships in Your Organization.......2007-07-17
We've probably all experienced that really bad job that drained every bit of creativity, energy, and enthusiasm we had. Perhaps you had that overbearing boss who had unrealistic expectations or that supervisor who wouldn't just trust you do your work. Maybe you worked in a place where suggestions or attempts to solve problems were quickly quashed or met with anger.
Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace unequivocally illustrates that such situations not only make the job a hassle but also inhibit the potential productivity of all employees. Basically, as the employee realizes that he or she (or others around them) is being devalued, he or she becomes less committed to doing the best job possible.
Dealing with the resulting morale issue is extremely challenging. Even if the actual problem is addressed, often lost trust is difficult to repair. For instance, if the company attempts to encourage employees to report potential problems, few will likely come forward because they can't possibly believe that they won't get yelled at or have their issues ignored once again. Trust and Betrayal in the Workplace explains that this situation need not be futile. There are ways to rebuild trust and address past issues to create a stronger, more productive business.
A TOP-NOTCH BOOK...TERRIFIC FOR PRACTITIONERS!.......2006-09-22
This is an excellent work that cuts through the typical babble that fills many pages of others books on the subject of trust. The content is exceeding meaty. The organization of the material is first-rate. One of the very best books on the subject. Highly recommended!
Trust as the Foundation.......2003-03-06
The Reina's develop understandable definitions and offer a well researched and thought out framework for both the development and practice of trust. They also offer practical and accessible vignettes and case studies illustrating the 'trust behaviors' that are so crucial to effective organizations and relationships.
Probably the most powerful part of the book is the section on Betrayal. Betrayal is a huge factor in our lives and we rarely talk about it. This book offers a language, method, and solution for both talking about betrayal and beginning the process of healing from it.
This is an important book for people interested in getting to the root of systemic problems in institutions, families, and relationships.
I highly recommend it!
Best of its kind!.......2002-05-23
Blown away! A huge help to solving workplace problems..help that carries over into all parts of life. The Reinas
have a great thing going. I would like to take their course and meet them in person!
A Solid Effort!.......2001-06-02
Dennis S. Reina and Michelle L. Reina discuss the importance of having a strong sense of trust in the workplace. They advocate avoiding both the major and minor betrayals that undermine trust. Creating an environment that promotes trust contributes to effectiveness in the workplace, especially during times of rapid change. The book discusses the nature and effect of trust. It is enhanced with a variety of exercises that promote workplace dialogues and help people think through the issue of trust. Many of these exercises are especially suited for teams, work groups and divisions. The exercises facilitate discussing and resolving problems in a more trusting atmosphere. This well-written, easy-to-read book is directed to front-line supervisors and unit mangers, although it will also interest top management and company owners. We [...] recommend this book to team builders in organizations of all sizes.

Book Description
This comprehensive text offers a solid foundation for assessment of human behavior in micro, mezzo, and macro settings. The editors offer practical and concrete consideration of how human behavior is affected in different systems: individual, biological, family, community, and organizations. These influences are reviewed in terms of implications for practice.

Using a personal writing style, the authors show students why people behave the way they do and prepare them for situations they will encounter on the job and in daily living. The book focuses on the family, group, organization, and community influences on human development, with explicit attention paid to the patterns and consequences of discrimination and oppression. Coverage includes: diverse family lifestyles (two-parent families, single-parent families, gay and lesbian families, ethnic and racial backgrounds, and class differences); various types of group membership (norms, group conformity, group goals, and leadership and power issues); social welfare organizations (goals of organizations, the bureaucratic environment, and communication processes); and concept, function, and structure of a community as a system (racial and ethnic communities).
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2006-12-15
I had to use this book for a term paper for my BS Social Work degree. It is wonderful reading, very comprehensive and thorough. It is written with the passion of what's right and just in a common curtosy manner. After reading this book, one has that feeling that they have read something that is really important for the progress of human nature.
Thank you Vimala Pillari for your compassion for the less fortunate!

Book Description
The rain forests of West Africa have been designated as one of the world's hotspots of biodiversity. This book focuses on the biodiversity and ecology of these forests. It analyses the factors that give rise to biodiversity and the structure of tropical plant communities. It includes an atlas with ecological profiles of 280 rare plant species and 56 large timber species, each with a one page entry including a colour photograph and distribution map.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile.......2006-04-15
A large part of this book is an atlas, one page per species: the atlas is in color, as is the Appendix, while the rest of the book is in B&W. Actually there are two atlasses, one of close to three hundred woody plant species (including some monocots) in West Africa and one of fifty timber species that are important in a smaller area (apparently to be called "Upper Guinea"). However, the three hundred species include some additional timber species, that for some reason did not make it into the second atlas.
Per species there always is a description, a detailed distribution map (very clear, in lovely color), and often a line-drawing or color photograph (personally I would have liked more illustrations, if need be at the expense of the size of the distribution map). The Appendix presents maps in a fair degree of detail showing forest cover. The first hundred pages provide general information on West African forests.
