Book Description
Australia is the only country in the world where every major stage in the earth's evolution can be witnessed alive , through "living fossils." You step through time by experiencing Australia's stunning arid lands, tropical rainforests, palm grottoes, Antarctic heathlands, island havens, and marine sanctuaries.
But Australia doesn't stop there: the wildlife is brimming with cooperative and unusual ways to survive an unrelenting environment where rain comes about one per decade. Check out the Thorny Devil, a reptile that slurps dew from its feet into the corners of its mouth through a surface-network of microscopic aqueducts. Or the large number of Australian bird species whose older siblings put off breeding to raise and feed their new brothers and sisters, while their parents have time to teach them long-term survival skills for the lean years. Or the ant-plants in tropical Queensland that have become entirely dependent between insect and plant for an exchange of nutrients. Or the beautiful flowering Banksia that "spike" their nectar with essential amino-acids so their pollinating Honeyeaters don't need to waste time hunting high-protein food elsewhere.
This book shows ecotravelers what to look for and why, plus how to get the best experience at each destination. From the Great Barrier Reef to Queensland Wet Tropics, Ayers Rock to Sydney and the Blue Mountains, Hannah Robinson helps you find human-sized birds, understand the local geology, and much more.
Travel destinations include many World Heritage sites of universal value due to their biological diversity, exceptional natural beauty, outstanding examples of earth history, or significant ongoing ecosystems. Resources included in the book will help you make the most of any visit: list of wildlife guides, safaris, nocturnal expeditions, and dive companies; descriptions of hikes from a half-hour to nine days in length, plus rafting trips, 4WD spots, and more; wilderness lodges, cabins, and starlit accommodations information.
This is the definitive ecotravel guide to Australia.
Chapters included: Sydney (including Blue Mountains) Lord Howe Island Fraser Island Queensland Wet Tropics Great Barrier Reef Red Center (including Ayers Rock) Top End (including Kakadu and Katherine) West Australia (including wildflowers, Shark Bay, Ningaloo Reef) Tasmania Resource listing

Highlights of Nature Down Under.......2007-05-24
This is an odd little hybrid, but quite useful. With beautiful photos, like a coffee table book, but small in size; with many maps, but none detailed enough to really use; with travel suggestions, but little "getting there" or "where to stay" information, it is a little bit of this and a little bit of that. What it does, more than say "Watching Wildlife," is put the flora and fauna in an ecological and evolutionary context, explaining why a particular species or area is unusual, and worth seeing. There are many sidebars with interesting natural history, and references to recent scientific studies along this line. But it is also a guide to the highlights of where to see nature in Australia.
Bottom line is, you will need other guides to fully plan an ecotourist trip to Oz, but you will get a lot more out of the trip if you read this book first.

Description:
A novel granular medium consisting (1.5-5mm in diameter) of inert perlite particles as nuclei and an effective surface layer containing sulfur, CaCO"3 and Mg(OH)"2 was developed for advanced treatment of agro-industrial wastewater. The performance of the medium was examined with a laboratory-scale down-flow fixed-bed column reactor using piggery wastewater, which had been treated by an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor and a trickling filter. The removal efficiency of NO"x^--N was more than 70% with a NO"x^--N loading rate of less than approximately 0.3kgNm^-^3d^-^1; the removal efficiency dropped due to the accumulation of nitrite when the loading rate exceeded that value. A significant drop of phosphate and Mg^2^+ concentrations occurred when the effluent pH exceeded 7.9. Ammonium was removed with an average removal efficiency of 12.4%. These results indicated that the crystalline reaction of PO"4^3^-, Mg^2^+ and NH"4^+ (MAP reaction) under alkaline conditions contributed to the removal of phosphate. This medium could be useful for the simultaneous reduction of nitrogenous and phosphorus compounds in biologically treated agro-industrial wastewater.

Description:
This study was conducted to evaluate the potential applicability of an in situ biological reactive barrier system to treat nitrate-contaminated bank filtrate. The reactive barrier consisted of sulfur granules as an electron donor and autotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria as a biological component. Limestone was also used to provide alkalinity. The results showed that the autotrophic sulfur oxidizers were successfully colonized on the surfaces of the sulfur particles and removed nitrate from synthetic bank filtrate. The sulfur-oxidizing activity continuously increased with time and then was maintained or slightly decreased after five days of column operation. Maximum nitrate removal efficiency and sulfur oxidation rate were observed at near neutral pH. Over 90% of the initial nitrate dissolved in synthetic bank filtrate was removed in all columns tested with some nitrite accumulation. However, nitrite accumulation was observed mainly during the initial operation period, and the concentration markedly diminished with time. The nitrite concentration in effluent was less than 2 mg-N/l after 12 days of column operation. When influent nitrate concentrations were 30, 40, and 60 mg-N/l and sulfur content in column was 75%, half-order autotrophic denitrification reaction rate constants were 31.73x10^-^3, 33.3x10^-^3, and 36.4x10^-^3 mg^1^/^2/l^1^/^2min, respectively. Our data on the nitrate distribution profile along the column suggest that an appropriate wall thickness of a reactive barrier for autotrophic denitrification may be 30 cm when influent nitrate concentration is less than 60 mg-N/l.

Customer Reviews:
Ghosts of Hank, Sr. and Elvis. What could be better?.......2004-03-02
I buy and read books about ghosts on a fairly regular basis and have found that there is seldom a proper balance between the ghost story itself and the history of the possible haunt. Some authors breeze along with one ghost story after another never quite giving the reader any real idea of what may have caused the haunting. Other authors spend most of their time telling the reader why the place might be haunted and then spend only a paragraph or two on actual sightings of the ghost. It is rare indeed to find a book that seems to have the mix just about right and Christopher Coleman has given us one of those rare books.
As Coleman glides from one area of Tennessee to another he lays just the right groundwork and then tells us a good ghost story. His writing style is great and I actually found myself a little spooked while reading some of the stories. It didn't help my state of mind when I found that two of his stories were about ghosts in my home county. Coleman of course covers the well known ghosts of Tennessee, like the Bell Witch and the Chapel Hill lights while at the same time giving a lot of space to some obscure ghost stories that were completely new to me. Also, anyone who plans to visit the Volunteer State would do well to read this book whether they are interested in ghosts or not for Coleman does a good job of catching the spirit (no pun intended) of the state. After all, what's a trip to Tennessee without some exposure to Elvis, country music, Confederate soldiers, and of course Jack Daniel.
I was about to deduct a star because Coleman has included some UFO, Spontaneous Human Combustion, and other tales that have nothing to do with ghosts. I noticed however that the title gave the author wiggle room there and since the book is so good I decided five stars were indeed deserved. I don't know how I missed reading this book for so long but I am glad I finally got around to it and recommend that you give it a try also.
A great book.......2000-01-27
I really enjoyed this book. Being from Tennessee I have been to many of the places in the book inluding Adams Tennessee home of the Bell Witch. This was a well researched and facinating book. I would recommend this book to any one interested in this subject.
A good "country" scare.......1999-12-07
This book was really well researched and presented. I did not find it particularly scary, only interesting. A lot of the information was presented in historical perspective and then "oh by the way, there may be a ghost there now". Being from the North I found the terminology and quaint sayings peppered thoughout the book a little irritating. So if you are looking for some Tennessee history with a dash of legend and ghost stories then this book might be for you. Otherwise, read Haunted Homeland.

good book.......2006-02-08
Very original, haven't ever read anything in a POV like that... and I like the plot :)
A book to make you think.......2005-12-12
I should have paid more attention when I picked up this book. I thought it said "a ghost story", "not a ghost's story". This book is told from the point of view of the ghost (Frank). Frank's brother, Herbie is about to begin his senior year and he has decided to go out for two sports--football and cross-country. He is now the same age as his brother was when he died.
The premise of the book is that there are some things that must be done while yet alive. It is a book that really gets you thinking about your own life and what you are doing with it.
While there are no objectionable words, I would recommend this for readers over age 12 due to subject matter. Definately one of the better books I have read.
Get ready for one of the best reads of the season!.......2004-07-26
Herbie: When Herbie is running through the graveyard, building his endurance for his heavy sports schedule, he knows almost immediately that there is a presence with him. Even when he thinks about all of this afterwards, he knows he will not be able to stay away from the graveyard and the spirit that beckons to him.
Frank: Eight years older than his brother, Frank died of cancer at seventeen. He was not ready to leave and fought hard to hang onto his body, but it finally just gave out. He misses Herbie, his parents and all the passions that he could never have. Frank needs to let Herbie know that things are finally going to be all right and that he can move on. But something else is happening in the graveyard, and even Frank can't understand who the spirit is that is reaching for him.
Eamon: Killed in a tragic accident in the late 1800s, Eamon has not found his peace. He is looking for a way out but does not know where he really is. He has found a great energy in the running boy and a possible channel to another world.
RESTLESS is one of the most original YA books to come along in recent years. While there are themes of spirituality and time travel, what lies underneath the ongoing story are the themes of love and endurance. Author Rich Wallace has done some detailed research into theories about the afterlife and expresses this information beautifully through his characters and the story line. His characters are chained together in their common theme of grief and loneliness. Frank (who has been dead for eight years) narrates most of the story, which gives it an entirely fresh perspective.
This book grabs you from the first page and won't let you go until its exciting and rewarding climax. Get ready for one of the best reads of the season!

MORE THAN A SPORTS NOVEL!.......2004-06-16
Author Wallace is a natural at writing exciting, realistic sports action. However, RESTLESS is about so much more than sports. It's a surprising mystery filled with real teens. The dialog is amazing! It's how real people talk. Here are three non-sports reasons you'll love this book:
1. Everyone would like to be like Herbie, the main character.
2. Everyone would want a big brother like Frank.
3. Everyone knows someone like Eamon the Ghost.
Wallace's book is honest, funny and dramatic. I can't wait for the next one.
Good Book.......2004-06-16
Fantastic Book! I enjoyed every page of it. It's a tightly, well though out and well told tale. The ending was a nice suprise too.

Customer Reviews:
For scholars of the American ghost story.......2006-10-09
This collection of 22 ghost stories by American women (1872 - 1926) is uneven, and most of the really good stories have been anthologized elsewhere. The need for stories that fit an overall theme (feminist, turn-of-the-century American supernatural literature) caused some stories to be included, that might not have otherwise passed muster. According to the editor, these stories "provide a rich and valuable source of insight into the all-pervasiveness of the ideologies in these women writers' lives."
If you read ghost stories to better understand a bygone cultural milieu, you will find "Restless Spirits" to be a satisfying book. For those of us who read ghost stories for the creep of horror they send up our spines, there are better supernatural anthologies, e.g. "Triumph of the Night," edited by Robert Phillips.
A sampling of the stories in "Restless Spirits:"
"The Lady's Maid's Bell" by Edith Wharton--much-collected, and pleasantly creepy. A down-on-her-luck lady's maid finds a new position at a gloomy country mansion on the Hudson River. Her new charge is an invalid, and as for the husband, Hartley need only stay out of his way on his rare visits home. But who is the "thin woman with a white face" who haunts the upper landing of the house?
"The Readjustment" by Mary Austin--A strong, competent woman doesn't want to leave her aimless husband even in death, until a neighbor talks her into it.
"The Shell of Sense" by Olivia Howard Dunbar--Victorian sensibilities are lavished on a love triangle between two sisters, one dead, and the deceased sister's husband.
"Spunk" by Zora Neale Hurston--Spunk was the kind of man who'd "beat you full of button holes as quick as he's look atcher." He shot Joe because he wanted his wife, Lena, and now Joe is back out of Hell to get his revenge. Told in dialect.
"A Legend of Sonora" by Hildegarde Hawthorne--A descendent of Nathaniel Hawthorne writes a very economical ghost story of two lovers who died of misplaced jealousy and poison.
Customer Reviews:
You need to read this!!!!.......2002-03-15
The Restless Dead is a very suspenseful and interesting book and I recommend it to people who like to stay up late and tell ghost stories. It's not just one tale, so if you don't like certain types of stories you have a selection. One of the best stories was " The Stolen Liver." Another detail about this book is that if you have a weak stomach don't read a few of these stories, belive me they'll make you sick.
Deadly exciting tales.......2000-06-15
I highly recommend this book to readers that love trilling ghost tales,I read it over and over and never get tired of it! It makes you want to finish the book as soon as you start it! I've read other ghost novels by this author but none as thrilling as these tales of horror!
a restless review.......2000-02-11
This book had some very interesting folklore from various countries. Personally I liked the stories, although they are somewhat for younger readers. If anybody can gather goulish stories from the other side Daniel Cohen is certainly the man.
A scary book with scary stories........1998-10-13
It's a good book with the scariest stories in the world. Ththir all very good and scary. But the best one is the one that two people went camping and it started to rain hard they swa something, then they found a little surprise.

Terrifying!.......2001-04-23
I first read this book as a teenager and it scared the pants off me. It takes the form of a collection of avowedly 'true' ghost stories which are well-written and often precisely located. A couple arose from places near my home town and I shudder to pass those places to this day! Some of the 'apparitions' described are truly horrible, such as the disembodied, disfigured head seen near a railway track, and some merely puzzling, like the pterodactyl seen flying round a deserted hotel and out through the window. I can even now recite the terrible curse carved on a murdered girl's tombstone, and say the name of the phantom horse who haunted Marbury Hall: worst of all, the ghostly hands and arms of that poor, wronged, walled-up servant girl STILL appear above my bedhead in the wee small hours after too heavy a supper! A pity this book's out of print as I'd recommend it to anyone who likes a good ghost story.

Book Description
RESTLESS SHADES is a collection of horrifying tales brought to the brave reader from the whisperings of a dark and sinister mind - Paul Melniczek.
Darkest Jungle: The primeval forest holds many terrors and legends. Perhaps even demons yet lurk, taunting you from the deepest and blackest depths of the wilderness.
Devil Man of the Hollow: What lies in the unknown depths of the jungle? Tred softly, lest you stir from slumber the malevolent beasts that dwell within. A tale of breath-taking terror.
Rift: Was it a storm, volcano? Or something alien, unknown to humankind that envelops an ordinary home?
Scary Nights: Are you afraid of the dark? Nights are a scary time for Bobby, because he is convinced something waits, and watches, from inside his closet.
The Uncertainty: There is one certainty - you will be shivering, wondering if an eccentric archaeologist has unearthed an ancient secret. Cannibal or curse - which is the real truth?
Unwelcome: Craig Andrew's psychic energy takes him to places where he isn't quite welcome. You'll shudder at Craig's harrowing confrontation with the supernatural when he trespasses on the unholy ground of a brooding manor, entering where only the dead rule.
Stick Men: What kind of farm hands does Bobby's Uncle have helping him? Can you keep a secret? I'll tell, but the truth will terrify you. Men made from sticks and straw. But how do they help in the cornfields and where did they come from?
The Raid: Halloween time is here, a time for tricks and treats. Tommy and Rusty are mischievous little boys who find themselves stranded in a web of trouble when they raid a haunted house.
Forsaken: The path leads into unexplored hinterland, vast forested mountains and gloomy valleys claimed by no man. Three woodsmen discover a cottage tucked away deep inside the wilderness. What diabolical secrets are waiting to be found within this shrouded hollow?
Stealer of Shadows: The path to pleasure may lead one into darker pastures, areas of twilight and madness where evil patiently dwells, eager to feast upon the unwary.

A horrible read.......2006-06-01
This is a collection of horror stories by Paul Melniczek.Usually
I love horror stories yet these stories were boring. The only one I liked was called Stick Men.While visiting his Uncle Fred on his farm.Bobby asks him how he gets all the worked done on the big farm .He tells Bobby about the Stick Men and how
they come out at night and do the work he could'nt.The only
thing they ask in return is that he keeps them a secret.Yet
now Bobby knows and he can't keep a secret. Now the Stick Men
are seeking revenge against Bobby and Uncle Fred. I guess some secrets are best never told... Just ask Bobby.
A Truly Great Collection.......2005-09-18
This collection has horror stories of an interesting variety. There's a story that has a strange, Twilight Zonish feel to it, athere's a nightmarish twisted fairy tale type of story, as well as many other creepy tales that are entertaining. This author effectively uses suspense to create a memorable reading experience.

Nightmares which leap out of your mind and into the shadows.......2002-05-16
Ten stories which wrestle with reality. For me there were echoes of Shirley Jackson with the understated. After all when the slashing's started then the show's nearly all over. What the author manages to do here is to dig deep into the psyche, twist on the nagging doubt and haunt the reader's own shadow.
At some point everyone has to wrestle with his/her own demons; and in these tales there is always something nasty lurking there, waiting for an unguarded moment, ready to pounce.
In Scary Nights, little Bobby is afraid of what might be in the closet. But it's Daddy who gets the job of finding out.
Stick Men has echoes of Harvest Home and the rituals surrounding the harvesting of crops.
While The Raid explores the haunting delights of Halloween and trick or treat.
The author creates a malevolent atmosphere in each tale which slips away from the "challenge of reason".
