not much in the US.......2007-02-02
I skimmed through this one in a bookstore, trying to decide between it and Lonely Planet Code Green.
This one definitely seemed to have the advantage in terms of unique and diverse travel ideas. It's longer and fits more ideas into each page.
But it had only one page on ethical travel in the US. At least 65% of it was devoted to Africa and Asia. There must be some ethical travel opportunities that don't require an international flight.
If you're looking for unique ideas and can affford international travel, get this book. But it doesn't have much to offer nearby.
As a side note, the glossier Lonely Planet Code Green, though it has more ideas in the US, is also far from perfect (see my review of that book for more detail).
A host of alternative opportunities.......2006-09-24
THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE: YOUR PASSPORT TO EXCITING ALTERNATIVE HOLIDAYS is for any sick of tourist traps and guilt trips - or who want to use their tourism dollars to have a positive impact on local people. From construction projects in Tibet to ecolodge accommodations, THE ETHICAL TRAVEL GUIDE offers a host of alternative opportunities.

Book Description
The first nine books in the popular Christy Miller series are now available in three treasured volumes!
Bestselling author Robin Jones Gunn packs each one with enough action, romance, and drama to keep you reading and wanting more. It all starts the summer Christy vacations on a California beach and meets two friends who change her life forever. But after moving across the country with her family, Christy must begin her sophomore year of high school uncertain where she’ll fit in. A red-headed new best friend, a try at cheerleading, a job at a pet store, and expectations for the prom fill Christy’s high school years with a string of laughter-and-tears moments. Fireball Katie keeps everyone guessing what she’ll do next, and surfer Todd keeps showing up while popular Rick has determined to get her full attention! As these memorable years unfold, Christy and her God-loving friends find out what it means to be a “peculiar treasure.” Follow Christy Miller as she stays true to her identity in Christ, drawing closer to God for help in realizing her dreams and dealing with her disappointments.
Whether you’re meeting her for the first time or have known her for years—
Christy Is a Forever Friend
Summer Promise
Fourteen-year-old Christy Miller has the dream summer ahead of her in sun-kissed California, staying with her aunt and uncle at their beachfront home. Aunt Marti loves to shop, and those surfers are cute—especially Todd. Christy promised her parents she wouldn’t do anything she’d regret later, and some of her beach friends are a little wild. But Todd and his “God-Lover” friends are giving Christy a new image of all things eternal. Can this summer live up to its promise?
A Whisper and a Wish
Christy’s family has moved to California just in time for her sophomore year of high school. But they’re not in Newport Beach, where she spent the summer. Instead they’re an hour and a half away and Christy has to start all over making friends. Despite an embarrassing escapade at a slumber party, things are going pretty well...until some midnight fun leads to a trip to the police station. Does God really hear every whisper? Does He know our every wish? Then why is it so hard to know who your friends really are?
Yours Forever
Christy is back at Aunt Marti and Uncle Bob’s house on the beach for the entire week between Christmas and New Year’s...and Todd is in town, too! The cute surfer completely captured Christy’s heart last summer, and she’s eager to spend every possible minute with him. But soon Christy and her aunt are barely speaking, and it seems like all her friends are mad at her, too—including Todd! Is he hers or isn’t he? And why would God let things get so tangled?
Story Behind the Book
“The Christy Miller series was actually born when a group of thirteen-year-olds challenged me to write a novel. I’d been questioning the content of their favorite books when they said, ‘Why don’t you write a book for us?’ I told them no, I only wrote picture books. But they persisted: ‘How hard could it be? We’ll even tell you what to write! We want a love story with teenagers at the beach.’ And there you go. Summer Promise first released seventeen years ago and is now translated into five languages. I continue to hear from readers all over the world, many girls saying that they gave their life to Christ after reading Summer Promise. I love that!”

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU ROBIN JONES GUNN!!!!.......2007-07-23
After many failed attempts during the past few years to find a book or series of books for her to read for pleasure, I gave this book to my 14 yr. old daughter, Amber, in June hoping she would enjoy reading it this summer...I am thrilled to say that she couldn't put it down!!! Not only have I also purchased Vols. II, III and IV for her (she is currently reading Vol. IV)...she has shared her love of the books with her friends and now they have the series and are reading them!!! This has made me so very happy...especially since these are Christian based books with valuable life lessons for our teens. What a wonderful gift to be able to give to our teenage daughters in this challenging & confusing world we live in~~~Thank you, Thank you, Thank you Robin Jones Gunn...from the bottom of my heart!!!!
A must-read.......2007-07-07
The first three books in this series are great! It's really hard to put the book down once you've started reading. The three books are fresh, invigorating, very realistic and heartfelt. They really bring you closer to God. I love them!
A great read.......2007-06-01
In SUMMER PROMISE, the first book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, a farm girl from Wisconsin is invited by her aunt and uncle to spend the summer with them in ritzy Newport Beach, California. However, upon arrival, Christy Miller realizes that she certainly does not fit in with the glamorous crowd that inhabits the town. After rejection and embarrassment, Christy's Aunt Marti suggests that she undergo a makeover; perhaps a transformation is all she needs to make some new friends. With an expensive new wardrobe and a stylish haircut, Christy finds that she indeed captures the attention of Todd and Shawn, the classically good-looking surfer boys, as well as Alissa, a stunning older girl who has lived all over the world.
All seems to go well until Christy realizes that her new friends may have an entirely different definition of a good time. Shawn invites Christy to a party, and she soon learns that it may be unlike any party she has ever been to. After being ignored or laughed at by most of those in attendance, and uncomfortable with the presence of alcohol and drugs, Christy decides to get out. While she makes a wise choice, others do not, and the night soon ends with a tragedy that will change the rest of the summer. Afterwards, Christy begins spending more time with Todd, who opens up to her about his strong faith in God.
Although she has gone to church all her life, Todd introduces her to a new group of people who are serious about faith in a way she has never experienced before. At the same time, Aunt Marti's constant nagging and desire to "improve" Christy begin to eat away at her self-esteem. As her world seems to move faster than it ever has, will Christy be able to live up to the promise she made to her parents not to do anything she will regret? Will she finally be able to figure out how gorgeous, sensitive Todd really feels about her? And why is she being forced to suddenly return home?
SUMMER PROMISE is an excellent beginning to the Christy Miller series. Fans of TV shows such as "The OC" and "Summerland" undoubtedly will appreciate the familiar beach setting and situations. Gunn does an excellent job of filling the book with a plot that is not quite as predictable as those usually found in teen fiction, as well as keeping up with the latest pop-culture references. It tackles many issues, such as self-image and family problems, but underlying all of this is Christy's newfound ideas about God. SUMMER PROMISE is a great read, with an ending that does not resort to the contrived and surely will have readers eagerly awaiting Christy's future adventures.

I just fell in love with the Christy Miller series. Finally theres a great Christian teen book out there with actual morels. Its a nice break from Gossip girls. It opened up my eyes about God and everything. It also opened my life to reading. This book shows that Christians make mistakes too. If your a girl interested in Christianity then you should definitely read the bible first but if your just looking for someone to relate to i would recommend this book.
Christy and Todd are so sweet!.......2007-03-28
This one was AMAZING. Now I want to go to Disneyland to do all the things Christy did and re-live that experience. You're really rooting for her to get together with Todd. I got the volume, and I read all of this one in a day or two, I was hooked! These are my favorite series ever, and I doubt that will change soon.
-pokes post below this one- Read the college years :P You'll find that her romance with Todd is more consistent, and it might change your view on romance novels.

Customer Reviews:
Readers may be surprised to find Christy making a permanent move to California.......2007-06-01
When Christy Miller was abruptly sent home from her summer vacation in Newport Beach, she thought she would never see the ocean again. However, in A WHISPER AND A WISH, the second book in Robin Jones Gunn's Christy Miller series, we learn that Christy will be moving to California permanently! She is thrilled to be leaving behind rural farm life in Wisconsin, but those around her aren't so pleased. Her parents are only moving because of a horrible financial situation and are certainly wary of life on the west coast. Meanwhile, Christy finds that best friend Paula is also upset by the move and may have already started to forget her. More unsettling is that her family and friends cannot seem to understand why she has gotten so serious about her faith in God. Christy assumes that all will be well when she returns to her "beach friends" back in California. She looks forward to going to school and building a life with all of the great people she spent her summer with.
However, her dreams are shattered when her parents inform her that they will not be living in Newport Beach, but well over an hour away in Escondido. She misses her chance to see summer-fling Todd, who is returning to his mother's house in Florida, and is not able to spend time with her friends due to the unflinching rules of her parents. Her new house is less than impressive, and her family constantly mopes around, not knowing a soul. To make matters worse, Todd has not returned any of Christy's letters or even called.
Things seem to pick up, however, as Christy begins school and befriends Brittany, Janelle and Katie, who unceasingly encourage her to pursue local heartthrob Rick. Not quite ready to forget Todd, Christy struggles to define her relationships, especially now that she is under the constant supervision of her strict parents, who have forbidden her to date. Her new friends may not be so perfect, either --- a late-night trip lands the girls in the police station and reveals some troubling problems. Will Christy be able to make a new life for herself in Escondido? And will she be able to forget about Todd and attract the attention of popular Rick?
A WHISPER AND A WISH picks up right where its predecessor, SUMMER PROMISE, left off. Readers may be surprised to find Christy making a permanent move to California, conveniently putting her back with her friends from the previous title. The book does add in several new characters; most notably, we get to meet Christy's mother, father and brother, who were absent in SUMMER PROMISE. While Christy is living with her parents, we get to see a different side of the protagonist, and her new friends certainly add quite a bit of drama into the mix. A WHISPER AND A WISH is a highly enjoyable book that will not disappoint fans and leaves many questions waiting to be answered in the next installment.

I love love love all the Christy Miller books. Love love love. But this one I wasn't as crazy about as some of the others, but still EXCELLENT. I've grown up with Christy, and it's cool when you read all of the books, and you see how she matures, her thoughts, etc. She's so innocent and sweet in this one! I recommend it, but read the Christy books in order.
Ahh!.......2006-09-30
I LOVE the Christy Miller series!!! I am 13 and luckily discovered this book in my ELA teacher's dirty shelves! I raced through the book with Christy and right when I got home I searched Amazon to see if there were any other books in the series. When I found out I bought them all!! The series is AWESOME as Doug would say. Everyone should buy the series!! This book and all of them are AMAZING!!!!!!!:D I hope Mrs. Gunn will write a fourth book in the college series!

christian but crazy.......2007-03-31
In the first book summer promise i was so confused. First of all who is this jebuth guy everybody talk about? And what the heck is a bibble?when christy goes to California she is the laughing stock of the beach bums. first she gets insulted by beach bums for being a green bean.that was a hoot.then she got the "talk" with aunt marti that she should be more active with the boys if you know what i mean.so aunt marti helps her out by buying her a new wardrobe that is so not childish i give aunt marti a two thumbs up.my question for this book is when she drowns does she get help from Todd or does he push and take credit the untold story. But lets not forget about meeting alissa. I mean who wouldn't want friend like her. Shes physically active with guys i do mean men. She also drinks and does drugs. Too bad christy wasn't more like her. Then she swims with her and almost of course drowns then todd came to the rescue. Yeah right he was nothing more then a pansy god boy. Then he fellows her to her towel i mean how pathetic. The amazing shawn comes then with alissa. Christy would of been better off with shawn i think. Well anyways Shawn and Alissa go sleep together i mean what a life style. And Christy and todd were alone on a crowded beach. Then they went in the water where christy first met creepy Doug. With a sandwich in one hand then a taco in the another. Crap i have to go pick my kids up from school write more later
WONDERFUL SERIES!!!!!.......2005-02-19
I think every girl in the world should read the Christy Miller series! They're great books! The main character goes through things in her life like insecurities, break-ups, issues in relationships...It has a very personal feel, and I admit I felt like I was going everything she was going through. But yeah...I can't really describe it to do it justice. If you read the series, you'll know what I mean. I definately recommend that you do!!
they rock!.......2005-02-03
I started the series when a friend let me read the first one way back when and I have been addicted ever since. I love them. They truly are awesome and I have one more to read which is the last one of the college years. im sad to see the story end. : ( I am buying them all but I only have 4 of them so far. I don't know if I want to read the sierra series because they can't be as good as these and I don't want to be let down. But I will prob read them eventually. Enjoy the books, they rock!
Best Series Ever!.......2004-03-21
I started by getting the Sierra Jensen series and I just couldn't put it down. When I heard about the Christy Miller Series I just had to have them and I couldn't stop reading them. I would recomend them to any and all teenage girls. I'm about to order the Christy and Todd: The college years series and I can't wait to get them!!
Wow........2004-02-16
I was totally sucked in when I read the second book in the Christy Miller series--I knew I had to go back and read the first one and then finish the books. They were awesome! I couldn't wait for the College years to come out, but now I've read them--I wish Mrs. Gunn would write some more so that we could see how Todd and Christy's kids turn out! Looking for more Christy stuff, I found the Sierra Jensen books but was skeptical, thinking, "yeah she may be friends with Christy, but she's not Christy; and Todd, Doug, Tracy, and Katie aren't on every page anymore. Surely these won't be as good." Wrong! I love Sierra as much as I loved Christy, in a different way. Probably because I can totally identify with Sierra's guy relationships. I have a friend who's just like Paul, and I have "liked" him for 7 years--ever since I was 9! As Sierra says, "what I feel for him is more than a crush. It's something deeper, but I can't explain it." Whoever you are, I guarantee that you will identify with either Christy, Tracy, Katie, Sierra, Amy, or Tawni---and they're all awesome girls who end up with awesome guys. It takes lots of time and problems for some of them, but in the end everything works out. These are books you've gotta read over Spring break, trust me! Get them from the library if you have to. Just do it!
