In June 1960, a young faculty wife named Alzada Kistner and her husband David, a promising entomologist, left their 18-month old daughter in the care of relatives and began what was to be a four month scientific expedition in the Belgian Congo. Three weeks after their arrival, the country was gripped by a violent revolution trapping the Kistners in its midst. Despite having to find their way out of numerous life-threatening situations, the Kistners were not to be dissuaded. An emergency airlift by the United States Air Force brought them to safety in Kenya where they continued their field work.

Thus began three decades of adventures in science. In An Affair with Africa, Alzada Kistner describes her family's African experience-the five expeditions they took beginning with the trip to the Belgian Congo in 1960 and ending in 1972-73 with a nine-month excursion across southern Africa. From hunching over columns of ants for hours on end while seven months pregnant to eating dinner next to Idi Amin, Kistner provides a lively and humor-filled account of the human side of scientific discovery. Not a very politically correct book.......2005-03-07

I agree that the author (somewhat) romanticizes colonialism. However, the family didn't seem to have a lot of contact with black Africans, so she wrote about what she experienced: the privileged lives of the Europeans there. She and her husband seem incredibly politically naive though.

That aside, I found it a fascinating book, in spite of the science, which wasn't too daunting, but caused me to mutter "here we go ..." each time it appeared.

I'd like to hear more of their adventures in other continents.

A Family in Africa.......2000-02-04

While I finished this book (and enjoyed the last half) and learned a lot of about Africa and scientific research, the insensitivity of the author to her surroundings ruined the experience for me! How can Kistner rave continually about the wonderful social whirl of the diamond-owners and fail to even mention the plight of the workers in those diamond mines. Same for the "glamorous" safaris. Not to mention the life-threatening danger to her children! Here she is -- for more than a decade -- exposed to perhaps the greatest of social and political upheavals, and nary a word except to lament that this wonderful way of life was changing! Read this book if you're curious about Africa in the 60s and scientific expeditions to remote sites w/ a family. But don't expect more than a limited, narrow report -- written as if the author wore blinders.

Captivating true-life adventures in Africa in turmoil........1998-06-03

Many themes run through this book about a remarkable and admirable family of scientists, including scientific ferver, compassion and love, concern and terror for Africa on the cusp of change, fascination for Africa's variety of life, adventure, and protection of the family's well-being. The Kistners' adaptability is amazing. They went through continuous and diverse challenges with aplomb. A matter of hours could find them moving from dirt-groveling scientific search for tiny insects in disease infested and personally threatening environments, to high society, twelve-course dinner parties . They spent unbelievably long hours and days of sustained scientific hard work in rain forests, deserts, and plains. A glimpse into the multitude of challenges required to mount a scientific expedition leaves the reader awe-struck. Mrs. Kistner's adaptablility and resourcefulness is truly inspiring. (It's an exciting tale and now that I've finished reading the book, I can finally get some sleep!) Kudos to the editor, publisher, and printer for a very attractive book, beautiful, readable format and print, CLEAR maps, (which is quite unusual) and pictures, and a comfortable size for carrying about. The presentation is a lovely invitation to read about this "Affair With Africa."

My nearly-10-year-old son and I have read all of the Andrew Lost series. In #14 they start off riding on a bat, then a cockroach skeleton, and they end up on a bird, which will carry them on to their next adventure... Still full of their humorous exclamations. The adventures are always such fun: Elements of reality melded with the outrageous. We can't wait til the next one!

My kids (2 and 4) loved this book. My wife bought this while she was out shopping and we read it to the boys three times the first night. The next morning, my oldest asked for me to read it to him again before asking for breakfast. The illistrations are attractive, the story is fun, but what really got the boy's attention were the holograms. They were fascinated by the images they were seeing. The book is light and fun even though it's about giant bugs. Keeps the kids amused without giving them nightmare images. A great read for young boys.

I received this book as a gift. I don't own a horse, never have, so I was puzzled by the gift. Ms. King's book was an informative, yet easily understandable read. I gained insights into what holds us back from winning and the importance letting go of unwanted "noise." I would recommend this book to ANY ATHLETE or ANY person wanting to acheive their best, not just those in the equestrian world.

There has been times when a Senior Moment is the frontrunner and the best book for determining the selection of wager and required amount is tough to compute. For a newcomer or a seasoned veteran of the horses this book allows a fast determination of the action necessary for success.

To be able to determine the selected cost, writing it on a slip, the mutuel machine concuring with your wager waiting for the announcer to say "and they are off" will make you day.

Buy the book....your horses or greyhounds will be more enjoyable.

The Definitive Guide To Track Wagering.......2000-06-30

This is THE best guide that I have ever come across in regards to wagering on horses and greyhounds. It is a must have book for any novice gambler, explaining every type of wager, defining track terms, and providing a guide of tracks of North America.

While the book is a must have for beginners, even most veteran gamblers would find this book quite beneficial. Mr. Andersen begins his book with the most basic of wagering information and progresses into more exotic wagers which would provide much needeed insight to all but the most seasoned gamblers.

There is an entire section devoted to wagering tables. I have found this to be quite indispensible while at the track trying to calculate how much a particular exotic bet will cost. I never go out to the track without this "tool".

Hi,
I love this book. It's on my Christmas list. I've seen it at my best friends house and loved it. It has everything from the kinds of classes to how to win each and every one of them. I can't use it because I ride Western and my mom will not let me have English lessons. If anyone is looking for a spectacular book about how to show look no further. I recomend this item for kids but adults might want a little more advanced information. Take Care.

This book covers everything a young rider needs to know about showing. It has descriptions of different classes, helpful hints and trouble shooting, and it's easy to understand. If an adult tried to read it, it might not be as helpful. But overall, a great book!

I thought that this was a great book for my first year hunter students!!! However maybe the title is a bit misleading, as some of the kids thought that just by reading the book they were guaranteed an armfull of ribbons! However it illustrated proper turnout and horsemanship well!!

This is a good book for people who want to train for show and for those who want to have a well trained horse. It explains in terms that novice horse people can understand and appreciate and still covers the finer points of training. The book keeps your interest and is easy reading.

This is the singular most effective tool that I have ever used in working with both young and old horses. As an equine professional, I have applied many of the techniques and methods to my own herd. Doug is truly the pleasure master. I believe that many people outside of the industry would enjoy this beautifully photographed and well written journal about pleasure horses.

In this book, the Saddle Club finally gets a chance to compete at a major horse show. Carole's doing well, but will mistakes from her past come back to undo everything she's worked so hard for? Callie is receiving unwanted attention from another Pine Hollow rider, but she doesn't know how to tell him to back off without hurting his feelings.

I really wish this series had some positive male characters. They're all either too possessive, or becoming an alcoholic, or just downright creepy. Oh well.

Why is everyone turning ino a creep??????? Cam and A.J. turned into total weirdos,and Stevie,Lisa,and Carole just don't seem to be as into horses as they used to be. I am an avid competitor at horse shows with my mare April Bloom,and I love horses!!! My point? Unlike the former Saddle Clubbers,I am NOT just going to walk out on the wonderful,wonderful world of horses for something as boring as boys!!!! I don't even know why I read this far in this awful series!*Since Bonnie Bryant just moved up to the older Saddle Club,she should start writing about the Pony Tails again in the books;they would be the same age as the old Saddle Club now. all the new saddle club books are on love or romance. what happend to horses? if you like romance, these are good if you like horses, try thoroughbred. I love the old saddle club books because they were about horses. the new ones are missing somthing.ACTUALLY THEY ARE MISSING EVERY THING.

I really enjoy Pine Hollow books, especially this one. It's kind of like a soap opera. I think it's good for teens (especially girls, like me) but maybe some younger kids wouldn't like it. What I like about it is the reality of it. The characters are now experiencing real things, not like it Saddle Club books where there's almost always a happy ending. I loved the show and at the end of the book...oh, how sad! I practically cried. What I don't like it Carole's attitude. cheating on a test, then thinking Max would obviously give her Samson? She made a big mistake and I think her father is right for punishing her. And with AJ...this is pretty wierd that he's into drinking at 16! But I know it could happen so I'm not saying it's unreal. I just hope they catch him soon. And Lisa's mom and that guy? Ick! Poor Lisa, seeing her mom and that guy walk into the kitchen in the morning together! So overall, I rate this book 4 stars. It was pretty good. A little depressing for the characters, but I know the next books will clear up more of the storylines.

what's going on?this is a totall mess! it's like one big soap opera. everyone'sso depressed and stuff it's sick.what with Carol grounded A.J. becoming an alcoholic at Sixteen"! get real! and what's with Lisa's mom who do you Know who's 40 year old mom goes out with a 25 year old college student.Thing's would be alot better without so much TRAGEDY! Lisa's mom should be happy lisa's not walking out on her like her fatherdid!

Good Textbook.......2006-07-07

A great book that I often reccommend for anyone who asks a lot of questions about grooming, at shows or at home. I Love grooming my horses, and this book gives you many new ideas and 'tricks' to try to make your horse have good and healty coat. I doesn't matter what breed or disciplne you show, this book has it all. I show hunter-jumpers and eventing, but I also have two miniature horses that I show and this book helped me with all of them!

This is one of those books you don't use every day, but when you're thoroughly confused or completely forgetting something it comes in handy. It has alot of great pictures and illustrations that make it great for kids as well as adults. I learned alot about alternative grooming methods that I had never even heard of before!

Grooming to win is for any discipline, and any breed. I used it as a reference for getting back into the show ring. It's like having your own trainer with you all the time. I show Morgan and Quarterhorses and it covers everything from conditioning to getting those braids in right!

This is one of the best books that I've found that explains grooming your horse step by step - not only for the show ring, but for everyday maintenance. Ms. Harris details breed protocols for the show ring (good news for the novice showman!). Did you know that it is considered bad form to braid the hunter on the left side of the neck, and vice versa for western pleasure horses? From achieving that showring bloom to step by step braiding guides, this book is a must for any competetive horseman's book collection!

From body clipping to everyday grooming, Ms. Harris has provided an excellent reference for everyone from the first-time exhibitor to seasoned professionals. She covers nearly every riding discipline imaginable, going over grooming procedures for each in a thorough yet consice manner. Her explanations are easy to translate into technique and the book offers many illustrations. This book makes for excellent reading for the novice and a wonderful referrence for the more experienced horse groom.
