5 out of 5 stars This covers it all.......2000-08-13

This provided me with plenty of groundwork to spend time in Miami . Historical background and explanations were excellent, as well as the maps, contact numbers, and accomadation. A lot of this bookd was taken the from the larger LP work on Florida was was excellent as well. The only thing to note is that some of the hotel prices in the-then more affordable category has risen, in some cases by a third. The hostels in Miami/Miami Beach cannot be beat.

5 out of 5 stars By far the best guide to Miami's social life and history.......2000-03-13

Before arriving to Miami, I bought this guide. Once there, I tested it and it was 98% accurate. No matter what you are interested in, this guide has a suggestion for you. From dining and clubbing, to hints and tips, to small excursions outside the metro area. A must for everyone interested in visiting Miami.

Silver Oaks Country Club is an exclusive place where secrets and scandals are the name of the game.

Brooke, Charlotte, and Georgia have grown up together and have always been best friends. No matter what. Then Valerie, the mysterious new girl, who seems to be all over all the pool boys, arrives.

Charlotte and Valerie become friends and are always hanging out and playing tennis together. Charlotte (referred to as "C") slowly shuts out her old friends. Brooke and Georgia feel betrayed.

Who likes who is the constant question in this book. It's very difficult to keep track of, too, because there are so many characters and the scenes change really fast. It was worth reading, but you have to pay attention all of the time to figure out who is doing what, and who they're doing it with!

This book is just like gossip girls and a-list. All the charactors are totally superficial and don't care about anything but themselves. None of them are likable. Read this if you want to read about a bunch of rich snobs who think they rule the world.

5 out of 5 stars Niki Chick - Pool boys.......2006-08-09

I'm the kind of girl that enjoys reading both the Da Vinci code and Gossip girl but when I came across the book pool boys I thought it would be a quick non-deep easy book to read. And to some extent I was right but I was wrong about the book being 2nd choice and not top notch because it was.
The three main characters, Brooke, Charlotte and Gorgia are three best friends that have been going to the Silver Oaks Country club since they were 5 years old. The girls are just looking forward to another summer of bikinis, boys and partying but all that changes when Brooke lays her eyes on the new lifegaurd Marcus. The three girls try flirting with him but Brooke gets pissed off that Marcus seems to like the new girl (Valerie) better.
The book takes place over a couple of weeks of the girls summer holidays and includes a breif romance period between Brooke and Marcus, A shocking revelation that Charlotte has a crush on the "Geeky" guy Caleb the girls have known forever and a hook-up between Charlotte and another old friend Robbie. Gorgia also has her fair share of excitment with her ex the tennis caoch at Silver Oaks and the new girl Valerie.
The girls break up and make up through out the whole book and it takes shocking twists and turns.

All in all the book was pretty good and I definitely recommend the book as a summer read to girls who enjoyed things like The A-list, Gossip Gril etc etc

Pool Boys by Erin Haft is awesome. This is the perfect choice for a quick, simple summer read. I enjoyed it very much and loved Charlotte. I don't want to give away the plot so I won't but its a great book. I love all the pool boys and just really enjoyed this book.

The 35th Anniversary editions have prologues written at the time of their publication by Sam Youd, a.k.a. John Christohper himself. All three books have them and they are filled with a wealth of information about what he was thinking, aspects of the Masters, etc. For example, he originally did not set out to write a trilogy and did not even know what/who the Tripods were at the end of the first book. They also have the written text in the stories as he wanted them to originally to be. For those of you who grew up on this stuff, all the books are definitely a 'must have.'

5 out of 5 stars The Pool of Fire.......2006-03-10

The novel The Pool of fire is a very enjoyable book to read. It held my interest because of it's thrilling rush of action, which John Christopher has a great style of this technique.

In the novel a few favorite passages were made. As a tripod destroys Will's boat while they are traveling in the war. This interested me because it put a true meaning to true meaning "up a creek without a paddle" and all the gear that was saved had to be carried. Another part of the book that interested me was when Will had to escape slavery by going down a sewage pipe. The reason this drew my attention was because of the humor.

In The Pool of Fire John Christopher has a great way of keeping my interest. He managed this by always has something big or major going on.

As I read this novel I learned some great vocabulary. I would also recommend this book to any body because it's so action packed.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Obnoxious Main Character.......2007-06-20

Brett has always had exactly what he wants. He lived in a nice area with his parents and sister, a great house with expensive cars and a pool. He had a great stereo system and almost never thought about money, except when he wanted something and needed money to buy it. Then everything changes. His father, a stockbroker, is accused and convicted of doing some bad things, including not paying taxes. He is put in jail and the family has to sell everything in order to start paying off his debts. Even after they have sold everything, they still have no money. Brett and his mother and his sister go to live with his eccentric aunt on the bad side of town and they start to learn how it is not to be rich.

One of the first things that happens is Brett needs to get a job. He starts off working at a fast food place, but his bad attitude clashes with a boss he thinks is totally unfair and unreasonable. He doesn't last long in that job. Then he goes to work for Alfie, a pool cleaner. It's not the ideal job, but Brett grows to like Alfie a lot and sticks with him, even through such humiliations as having to clean the pools of his friends and even the pool at the house where he used to live.

Throughout the story, Brett insists he hates his father. But does he really hate him, or can he forgive his father for getting him into this mess?

I liked how nice Brett's family was, especially his sister, who should have been just as bitter as he was. Alfie was a great character, too. He was nice to Brett when Brett didn't deserve it, and he gave Brett lots of things to think about in his relationship with his father.

Brett's character was awful, though, right from beginning to end. He was self-centered, and the way he spoke about himself was obnoxious.

4 out of 5 stars This was a spectacular book.......2006-02-08

Brett Gerson, a fifteen year old kid who's disrespectful and extremely wealthy. All of this wealth ends when Brett's father is arrested for insider trading. He loses everything from his house all the way down to his five thousand dollar stereo. Now he has to live with his Aunt Mary who loves kissing him on the forehead. He gets a job at a place called Fast Burger, where the boss is what he thinks a big jerk. He then quits and begins to clean pools with Alfie, the seventy year old guy who use to clean his old pool. You will not want to put this book down, especially at the sad yet joyous ending. Read POOLBOY, it's a great book to make you laugh, be mad, and even emotional.

      5 out of 5 stars Pool Boy.......2006-02-07

Pool Boy by Michael Simmons is way on top. This book really kept me going. This is about a boy who goes through alot and then realizes that what he lost wasn't important but his family and friends. His father pulled a stupid move and his 74 year-old friend,Alfie, went on.
I thought this book was going to end with Brett getting everything he had, back, but it was a whole other twist. On a scale from 1 to 10, i rated a 9 because it was one of the best books I ever read and it just had me telling everyone about it. If you like books about someone loosing soemtheing but instead on gaining it back, they gained something that was imporant in life back, then you well like Pool Boy by Michael Simmons.
      WHAT A GREAT BOOK!!!

4 out of 5 stars brett garrison speaks.......2006-01-10

I picked up this book on a whim at the library, and ended up loving it. The style of writing Michael Simmon's uses for his book is different from the books I usally read becuase it is more of Brett telling the story of the summer he turns 16, after his dad goes to jail and their family looses all their money.

Brett has grown up in a wealthy family, so he's been used to having money and all of the nicest things all his life. That is, until his dad get arrested. The story of Pool Boy explains how Brett handles losing pretty much all he has and moving in with his aunt. He soon realizes he needed to get a job to help out his mom a little with their money problems, and he endes up taking a pool cleaning job from his former 70-year-old bus driver, Alfie.

Brett and Alfie end up becoming great friends, and Alfie helps Brett to deal with everything that was going on in his life this summer, from his secret love with Nicole to his hatred he felt towards his father for leaving his family with nothing and changing their lives forever.

Thanks to Alfie, Brett soon learns the value of close relationships with family and friends, and how they should not be taken for granted. He matures some, and he goes from being a nice so nice kid to being a pretty likeable guy.

      5 out of 5 stars Totally Hilarious...But Touching, Too.......2004-12-25

I loved loved loved Pool Boy's snarky main character, Brett -- he's sharp and he's snide and despite his spoiled-brattiness I found him impossible to hate. That's probably because he's got a soft side (though he'd never admit it!), like when he calls his sister "the most kind and decent person there is." And also because we've all had selfish thoughts, it's just that HE's bold enough to share them. Shameless? Maybe. Hilarious to read? YES. Brett's journey from super-rich kid to burger flipper to pool cleaner to sensitive hero is very funny, and also truly touched me in the end (THAT was a surprise). All of Simmon's characters -- from the wise, 70-year-old pool cleaner to Brett's richie-rich friends -- completely come to life in Pool Boy's pages. I can't imagine anyone who wouldn't love this book.

        Book Description

Experience an erotic dream come true with this chiseled tale of man obsessed with man. A sexy combination of summer romance, deep guy-cravings, and everything you've always dreamed of when it comes to The Pool Boy.

In this steamy and guy-hard tale, R. W. Clinger wets the reader's tongue as middle-age novelist Robert Fine is in search of a summer pool boy at his Lake Erie beach house. To his lust-filled surprise, straight Kent Tacoma arrives, and is interviewed for the position. After hiring Tacoma, Fine explores the necessary means of erotic joy between men. The writer becomes obsessed with The Pool Boy. And Tacoma, sweetly hot and innocent, begins to comprehend the masculine attraction and questionable relationship between employer and employee.

The idea was great but the characters never seem to draw you in and make you care. I was hoping for more detail and more emotion. It was a good light read and well written but there needs to be a bit more development in the characters.

3 out of 5 stars Have Speedo, Will Travel.......2004-05-02

"The Pool Boy" is as advertised, a dramatization of a typical dirty-old-man's wetdream, having a 22 y/o "straight" ex-Navy boyish hunk in tiny Speedos around the house as eye candy. And, oh yes, he keeps the pool clean (Clearly not the reason for his hiring, since the D.O.M. employer seems to use the pool only a few times all summer.)

I found the novel actually a bit sad in places, as the employer (a financially-rich writer in his late 50's) clearly lusts over the boy, spying on him every chance he can, but is afraid of scaring him away by making a move. Robert (the employer) also suffers pangs of jealouy when Kent (the pool boy) goes out to drink with a friend closer to his age, and this turns to rage when he finds out that the two of them have had sex. Of course, they do eventually get together, though it's clear that the relationship has become more of a "mentor" relationship than the writer intended it to be. It's obviously not meant to be great literature, but the timing is good, the characters are amazingly complex for a novel of this calibre, and quality of the writing is beyond average. Recommended as escapist reading for those who may be interested in the story.

        Book Description

Two tragic deaths are handled very differently by school administrators. A drunk driving accident paralyzes Adrian Vanderlaar and kills his girlfriend. The outpouring of grief is starkly contrasted with the muted response to a gay-bashing murder, causing Paul Carter to speak out. Paul's growing awareness of his sexuality and Adrian's return to school play out artfully in a book brimming with emotion, humor, and humanity, and bravely unsentimental unsentimental in its treatment of both young men, Pebble in a Pool is a complex yet sparely written account of actions, reactions, and consequences.

William Taylor is the author of Jerome and The Blue Lawn which was selected for the prestigious New York Public Library's Books for the Teenage List and was a finalist for the Lambda Literary Award. He lives and writes in New Zealand.

1 out of 5 stars A explosive start that turns into a damp squib!.......2005-12-22

I should have listened to the other reviewers of the novella before buying it. The rather promising start of the story quickly turns hollow and flat. I felt that the writer ran out of steam a third of the way through the story. He tied up every loose end too easily. The end is a typically perfect gay fairytale that will appeal to younger readers. In short, this novella is too short, unrealistic, lightweight and left me with the feeling that I had been cheated!

3 out of 5 stars Good concept, bad execution.......2004-05-07

The opening of the book is one of the more intersting openings that I have read. The contrast between the super-popular high school students and those on the outside are confirmed by both teenage culture and adult culture. While this book could have been a great examination of these forces, it ended up being a trite, sterotypical novel. My high rating is given becasue the style was good and was a quick read. This novel would best be read in an airport waiting for a plane, something quick and light that does not require much thinking

2 out of 5 stars Pebble doesn't ripple, it sinks.......2003-11-29

After reading the novel's description online I ordered it. It came in and I was disappointed that it was only 120 pages. It started out alright, and I hoped it would get better, and it started too, but the closer the reader gets to the end, the more cliche, trite, and just awful the book gets.

I'm giving it two stars instead of one because while it is awful, I did find myself laughing out loud a couple times and how unrealistic it is.

Don't waste your time with this horrible book.

4 out of 5 stars On the Brink of Adulthood!.......2003-04-02

It really is not important how realistic this story is, or if it could Really happen, the point is it is an emotional, complex story that is certainly well-written and a satisfying read for a lazy afternoon or evening. The characters are believable, and the story is full of action and emotional turmoil for these two main characters that are on the brink of manhood.

High school senior Adrian drinks too much one night, and in a terrible car accident is paralyzed and his girlfriend is killed. In the meantime, high school senior Paul, speaks out in defense of another high school senior who was killed in a gay-bashing murder. Paul's fundamentalist father kicks him out and Paul ends up living with a local artist, named Steve, who helps him. Paul's growing awareness of his being gay, coupled with his attempt to deal with his fanatic father, and also deal with the town's gay bashers, is a lot to handle for this young man. Paul's being on his own leads to unexpected love, and emotional consequences he never expected. At the same time, Adrian is due to go on trial for manslaughter, and it's at this point in the story that Paul & Adrian's lives become more involved in ways they never expected.

This is a story of unexpected friendship, love, and the struggle to do what's right, no matter what the consequences. It's a short book, but there's a lot of story here. Taylor knows how to successfully bring the struggles of young people today to the written page.

2 out of 5 stars pebble should have been left buried.......2003-03-16

Upon finishing this novel, I was almost offended at how boring and unbelievable the plot was. I read the entire thing only because I paid 10 bucks for it, and after awhile it became quite humorous. Like the scene where the two leads beat each other up and then end up kissing in the next paragraph. How much more pathetic can it get? And how are people supposed to believe the two characters love each other--by a black eye? I'm not sure what author's purpose was with this book, but it seriously gave me nightmares last night...
