5 out of 5 stars A beautifully illustrated, scientifically accurate daybook.......1999-02-21

This is a daybook/diary/journal that is beautifully illustrated with nature sketches. There are illustrations of both plants and animals. Some are line drawings, and many are delicately colored, very detailed drawings of birds or flowers. There is a page for each week of each month as well as additional illustrations for different months or seasons. It's especially nice that it can be used any year since the day of the week is not given with the date. This not only is a wonderful gift to yourself to use as a journal, but it would also make a thoughtful gift for anyone who loves nature.

1 out of 5 stars NEITHER JOYCE NOR HIS DUBLIN BUT MUCH OF NEGROTTI.......2007-06-30

For a post/modernist attempt at a self/referential coffee table book which moans why am I writing this, it is amazingly unselfaware.

A century of so ago Samuel Clemens under the trade name Mark Twain wrote the brilliant Innocents Abroad, a satirical travel log which mocked the arrogance and ignorance of nouveau riche Americans taking the Grand Tour of the wonders of Europe and Palestine. Twain wrote incredibly well in this unaware yet arrogant and presumptuous voice, fooling perhaps the majority of his avid readers, just as his adapting the voice of antebellum Southerners in Huckleberry Finn brands him as racist for those who mistakenly identify author with character, and yet his irony makes his great novel a powerful tool against racism through its revelation of its implications, and through its defeat in the heart of Huck, who prefers to suffer hellfire, as warned, for his love of Jim.

Nevertheless, Negrotti here lacks Twain's selfawareness, satire, irony and talent as she drifts aimlessly about Dublin wondering what in the world she is doing there drinking coffee alone. She embodies the attitudes which Twain ridicules so well, of the tourist far from home not knowing the real significance of what is before them, disparaging it, getting lost, and wishing rather to be home, if they could only remember their own address. One wonders whether those several coffees consumed by Negrotti are actually the concoctions falsely sold as Irish coffee, adding to her bewilderment.

Negrotti's end flap blurb claims she graduated Cambridge in Modern Languages and published a work on Wordsworth, writes for magazines and produced a brief film. Clearly she is not prepared for Joyce and this writing reveals it. Anyone who has merely written Wordsworth is not ready for Joyce. Her writing does vaguely resemble writing for a travel magazine such as you might encounter in the seat flap of a commercial airline with nothing else to read, but this article would by any editor worth his blue pencil be sent back for multiple rewrites, and any fact checker worth his research would excise any and all her comments regarding Joyce and his works.

For Negrotti manages to get everything she says about incidents in Ulysses wrong. She has Stephen inventing stories for his companions at the Wellington monument, instead of simply the Parable of the Prune Pits told to one listener between the newspaper offices and Mooney's. She claims Bloom bought sausages, rather than the famous breakfast pork kidney, significant to the story for being decidely not kosher, despite all the antiSemitism he endures. This is but a few examples of the many factual errors she presents bald faced regarding Joyce's writings, too painful to enumerate here. This is not a book about Joyce, nor his writing, but all about Negrotti, and what she says about him cannot and should not be trusted.

Nor may we trust what she says while wandering lost in Dublin, unable to locate Joycean landmarks in place or at times they might actually be open, including the James Joyce Museum, and too afraid to get off the public transportation, as she frequently comments she felt too afraid to go on and go out. When she does manage to get to the National Library, she is too afraid to take a look at the books in the stacks and merely comments that some were blue, some green and some red. She goes by a druggist and buys lemon soap for her boyfriend back in London, which she says makes him smile. We must wonder why he did not come with her to Dublin. In any case, the soap was bought by Bloom not for Molly, for whom he ordered a more feminine preparation, but for his own bath.

In short, this coffee table book does not deserve a space in your Joycean library. A more valuable, informative and reliable coffee table Joyce book, which will not only amaze and impress your literary friends over for an evening of cocktails, but also inform you very thoroughly and well about James Joyce is JOyce scholar John McCourt's James Joyce: A Passionate Exile, of similar oversize format and comparable price, but of infinitely greater and more worthy treatment of its subject.

Permit me please to share a passage from Negrotti.

"For me, the blood line was coming to Dublin. But as I look back over the book I have written, I realise that it doesn't fit any particular model. It's neither a travel book, a biography, nor an examination of Joyce's literature. Dublin floats about somewhere in its middle, a series of impressions built into a meandering, wayward narrative. But this was the Dublin I encountered, and the Dublin I remembered. What I have recorded is that sense you take away when you leave somewhere, a series of imprecise, cloudy recollections which float in the memory. I know other books are more exact than mine. And I could have used my Cambridge education to gather up facts, cramming them in to offer you all the information in the world. But I was more interested in the blue clock on the front of Trinity College, glowing bright in the sunshine after a warm shower of rain. And I think, as Joyce got older, that one of the reasons he wouldn't go back was that he didn't want to damage his impressionistic view of the city."

Unfortunately she is blithely unaware of the political and religious implications of her admiring the supercilious anglican Trinity College rather than Joyce's own beloved University, and the disparaging remarks made at Trinity regarding his writing, as representing the vulgar fruit of a University educated street boy spitting into the Liffey.

Anyone who has read James Joyce knows Joyce is no imprecise impressionist of nebulous diction. He loads each word with precise and multiple meanings. Who reads him knows how scrupulously he writes, to assure every detail exact, including his writing home to relatives to confirm precise details about the city of Dublin. He was not an impressionist but scrupulously, meanly, honestly realist. He also once asked whether a reader could consider the Cyclops episode as Cubist, due to the variety of carefully drawn perspectives and conflicting precise styles and appliqued collages. He was not nevertheless an impressionist, and tragically he never "got older" as he died quite young with plans for a sequel to the great Finnegans Wake (Penguin Twentieth-Century Classics), and it is very cruel for Negrotti to callously, ignorantly consider that he did grow old, further indication of her lack of any research or facts, as his precise reasons for not returning to Dublin, and his regrets, are well documented, and they are not nostalgic impressions in the least.

But she writes here she was more interested in looking at the clock on Trinity College than in cramming "information" into this book, despite her alleged research training at Cambridge. Believe me, I would prefer a book crammed with actual facts than her personal and wayward meanderings, but this was apparently too much heavy lifting for the self/indulgent and self/absorbed Negrotti. Interestingly the one landmark to which she continuously returns like a pilgrim to Mecca is the home of Oscar Wilde, who thus warrants here a full page photograph. By this book this is the one landmark we may easily locate when next in Dublin.

This quote from the book reveals why other works are more useful, and also provides a glimpse at her purposefully, fashionably, sloppy, careless syntax. Throughout she avoids the use of mere verbs in her sentences, while here she limits such abuse of good grammar to a few independent conjunctions beginning her sentences.

Bottom line is that we sadly must retitle this work as Negrotti's Dublin, as admitted in this quoted passage, and search for Joyce, and for Dublin, elsewhere, most readily, for instance, within the mighty Ulysses (Gabler Edition) itself and in the excellent unabridged Donal Donelly audiobook recording Ulysses which ever resounds within my personal spaces. Joyce after all claimed that should his dear dirty Dublin disappear from the face of the earth, she could be reconstructed exactly from his careful writings.

"I was meant to be the committee chair of the benefit, and I will be," Cameron Warner announced. "And you're going to help me."

"No way, Cameron," Adrienne Lewis said.

"We had a deal, remember?" Cameron pointed her perfectly manicured finger at Adrienne.

"What deal?" Adrienne asked innocently, but she cringed inside. She'd hoped Cameron had forgotten their conversation at the Manhattan Cotillion.

"You help me dethrone Princess Mimi," Cameron crooned. "And I let you in on the secret Parker Devlin is keeping from your gal-pal Liz. And, believe me, this is something she oughtta know."

Adrienne sighed. Cameron could make her life hell, as she had in the past.

"Fine, I'll help you," Adrienne said. "So what is this secret of Parker's?"

"No, no, no." Cameron smiled her evil, megawatt smile. "First you help me. Then I help you."

        There are secrets everywhere . . .

After-school nanny Liz Braun's wealthy boyfriend, Parker Devlin, has a secret—one so scandalous that he won't share it with Liz. When the secret is finally blown wide open on the evening news, all of Parker's so-called friends dump him. Hurt, Parker pulls away from Liz—the one person who can actually help him.

Eight-year-old Emma Warner, the little girl Adrienne Lewis takes care of after school, has a secret too. And she says it's about Adrienne! What could Emma know?

Evil Cameron Warner has many secrets, but her two juiciest ones are about Parker's sordid extracurricular activities and about Adrienne!

I love every book in this series, but Juicy Secrets is the best! I stayed up until 3 a.m. reading it, and I couldn't stop. This is one of the most addicting books I've ever read. Anyone who hasn't read this book is missing out on a lot.

This third novel by Victoria Ashton, JUICY SECRETS, is another great addition to the CONFESSIONS OF A TEEN NANNY series. In this book, many things change! There is also a huge cliffhanger for what will happen in the next book! I would only read this book if you have read the first two books, which are equally as phenomenal. If you don't read them in order they might not make a lot of sense.

Many secrets about people in the book are reveled and some odd couples get together. (Hint: They are two people you never would have expected!) Liz's relationship with Parker Devlin takes a bad turn! A very odd secret about Parker's father comes out and it totally crushes him!

Emma, the little nine-year-old whiz kid that Adrienne is a nanny for, becomes obsessed with the television show, CSI! Her new spy skills earn Adrienne some very interesting information about her new boyfriend.

You will just have to read the book to find out what else happens!

        Victoria Ashton scores again.

I am an adult who enjoys a good YA novel and the entire series Confession of a Teen Nanny is quite entertaining.

Certainly, this novel can be considered lightweight, but the characters, the writing and the storyline are so entertaining that you forget that you are not reading "high" lit.

Juicy Secrets involves more romance, more gossip and more disgusting deeds by those "other, richer sider of the world".

Buy this book - its fun - but it is a little too short - as is most of the books in this series.

Teen nannies and society girl wannabes Adrienne and Liz finally have everything they've ever dreamed of. At least, that's what they think. While Adrienne's relationship with Brian, her boyfriend of two-years, is over ever since he kicked her to the curb to creep around with rich girl debutante, and celeb wannabe, Cameron Warner, Adrienne doesn't mind flying solo for awhile. But when Graydon "Gray" Warner, begins making advances towards Adrienne. Advances that seem much more sincere than the ladies man has ever displayed before, she begins falling for his charm. However, when Adrienne's charge, and Graydon's half-sister, whiz kid Emma Warner, begins putting her detective skills to the test, she discovers some very unsettling news about her new crush, that leave her wondering whether she's being played for a fool. Liz, on the other hand, feels that her relationship with Parker Devlin, wealthy heir, and handsome guy to boot, is going strong. That is, except for the fact that one day he's excessively attentive, and the next, he's running on cold, and dodging her phone calls, e-mails, and text messages, leaving her wondering what else is going on in his world of wealth. As if that weren't bad enough, Liz has got to deal with a fretful nine-year-old, whose supposed Child Psychologist extraordinaire mother seems to feel that the best way to compete with other society parents is by forcing her skittish child into taking horseback riding lessons, and competing in horsemanship shows. Now, the two girls (along with a handful of their friends) must get to the bottom of all of the secrets surrounding them, before someone ends up with a broken heart. Or, even worse, an unkind blurb on Page Six that could ruin their reputation forever.

Victoria Ashton never ceases to amaze me with her creative writing skills, and downright juicy characters. The fact that she combines uber-wealthy characters, with those who have to "work hard for the money" gives readers a chance to view both sides of the spectrum, and how hard it is for the working-class to win a chance to play in the world of the rich. Adrienne is an interesting character, whose kind, yet inquisitive nature make her appealing; while the various tricks she constantly has up her sleeve provide for some juicy entertainment. Though, I must admit, the character after my own heart is actually her charge, eight-year-old Emma Warner, whose intelligent lingo, and crazy schemes always leave me wanting more. As with the previous installments in this can't-miss series, Ashton has combined a pinch of money, a dash of fashion, and a whole lot of back-stabbing scandal that will leave you foaming at the mouth, and wanting oh-so-much more.

        Why I hate Cameron Warner:

        1. She stole my boyfriend.

        2. She is the richest teen in NYC, with more designer shoes than a department store.

        3. I have to plan a party so she can be crowned Debutante of the Year. Like I care!

        4. Did I mention: She stole my boyfriend!!!!

Sixteen-year-old Adrienne Lewis is a nanny in the fabulous Warner penthouse high above Manhattan. Every day, Adrienne watches eight-year-old Emma after school and constantly tangles with Emma's beautiful but wicked teenage half sister, Cameron.

In the meantime, Adrienne's best friend, Liz Braun, has also gotten caught in the seductive web of society, going out on jaw-dropping dates with the devilishly handsome and wealthy Parker Devlin.

But is Parker playing Liz, or is this just how the rich play? And can money really buy everything for girls like Cameron—including Adrienne's own boyfriend?

5 out of 5 stars A wicked thrill ride through the Upper East Side that brings viciousness to new heights..........2006-05-02

Adrienne and Liz are still mingling with the over-privileged teens of Park Avenue. However, while they're working as nannies for genius-level children, the other teens are partying it up with platinum credit cards, and celebrities. But Adrienne and Liz still know how to have a little Upper East Side fun. Adrienne has been courted by Mrs. Warner - her boss - to break-up the relationship between stuck-up Cameron and Adrienne's ex-boyfriend, Brian, and readily agrees. After all, Adrienne has wanted to get back with Brian ever since Cameron stole him from her, and working alongside Mrs. Warner will give her a chance to earn some extra spending money - that will take her all the way to the posh designer shops with the best clothes. But breaking the two new lovebirds up proves to be more difficult than desired based on the fact that Cameron needs a date to the Manhattan Cotillion - where she will be coming out to New York society. Without Brian, she'll have no one to present her. Liz, on the other hand, is dating the prestigious pretty boy Parker - a guy with connections and good looks. Parker seems to be the perfect boyfriend - at times - but can be a totally different person when he wants. All Liz wants to know is whether Parker is cheating on her or not - but finding out the answer is harder than she's ever imagined. Now these two rich girl wannabes are at an ultimate face-off with the privileged Page Six princesses, and need every bit of luck - as well as some cash and connections - to set things back on track, and get to the bottom of the lies.

After reading CONFESSIONS OF A TEEN NANNY last year, I became hooked on the lifestyles of the rich - as well as the not-so-rich - and famous, and was unsure whether Victoria Ashton would be able to outdo herself with the sequel RICH GIRLS. Well, the proof is written in ink: she most certainly could. RICH GIRLS is a vicious sequel that will floor all readers, and leave them with a cliffhanger that will surely interfere with their own lives. As opposed to being totally about Adrienne's problems with Cameron - like in the series' first installment - RICH GIRLS focuses a lot of attention on Liz and her worries about Parker. From Manhattan to Aspen, RICH GIRLS brings every aspect of the rich to life, giving readers a birds-eye view of how the privileged spend every waking hour. A wicked thrill ride through the Upper East Side that brings viciousness to new heights.

4 out of 5 stars Very good read.......2006-03-21

I am an adult who enjoys reading teen fiction. I had read the first book in this series and thought it was good. The second book in the series - Rich Girls is even better.

The basic storyline of two "non rich" girls working as nannies for two over the top rich families. One of the families has the requisite older rich sister - which, in this case, is obviously in the storyline to create havoc with our nannies.

Although some of the stuff may be a little over the top, the storylines are interesting and the author has a wonderful writing style.

I would definitely suggest buying this one.

4 out of 5 stars An engrossing and vividly written sequel .......2006-03-17

Adrienne Lewis and Liz Braun are the best of friends. Attending separate schools is hard enough, but they also share the same occupation of being a nanny to spoiled rich kids whose parents have nothing better to do than to push them off on others. Things wouldn't be so bad if Liz wasn't dating Parker Devlin, the main guy at Adrienne's school. To top it off, Adrienne has some serious boy challenges of her own. Her archrival Cameron Warner, who also happens to be the big sister of the child she tends to, stole her ex-boyfriend Brian away from her and obviously has no intention of giving him back. Not to mention, Cameron doesn't even want to be with him; it's all about making Adrienne's life as miserable as possible.

With the holidays looming ahead, and the heavily anticipated debutante cotillion shortly following, Adrienne is at an impasse. Cameron's stepmother has voluntarily agreed to pay her to steal Brian back so that he won't be Cameron's escort, and Adrienne is up for the challenge. Hey, it's free money, right? When the Warners leave for Aspen, Adrienne is elated when Brian agrees to accompany her to dinner. Things start off well between them but end on a dry note as the family returns unexpectedly and spoils Adrienne's plans.

On the other side of town, Liz is fretting about her boyfriend Parker and his reputation for being a playboy. To make matters worse, she's a nanny for a psychologist who's psycho in every sense of the word. When she's invited to Aspen for the holidays to help with the kids, Liz is sure she'll get some time to spend with Parker. As luck should have it, she does get to spend a little time with him, but things don't turn out quite the way she expected.

As the rich society girls get ready for the debutante cotillion, Liz and Adrienne hatch a plan to make them all pay --- in one way or another. As the night unravels, although these two aren't being introduced into society, they sure are beautiful enough to take the spotlight off the main players of the ball, proving that money doesn't buy everything.

Victoria Ashton does a fabulous job with this storyline. The vivid details and dialogue between the characters add the right mix to make this second book in the series a definite winner.

        5 out of 5 stars LOVES IT!!!!!!.......2006-09-26

Oh, my God, Adrienne thought. Someone at the party stole Mrs. Warner's jewelry! "

Confessions of a Teen Nanny, first in its series. Makes you never want to work with New York socialites no matter the pay. How is a girl like Adrienne going to handle an eight year old super genius, a teen that only likes to party, and the boss? There are a lot of rules. Adrienne has to adapt quickly; she changes from a nanny into a party planner.
Her friend Liz gets her a job babysitting an eight-year-old super genius. At first she thinks it's a normal baby-sitting job. She soon realizes Emma's big sister Cameron (Cam) doesn't like to play things the easy way. Cam makes her way into Adrienne's life without her noticing. She takes Adrienne's boyfriend, and tricks her into buying things she can't afford. Will Adrienne ever get out of this mess?
I love the way Victoria Ashton portrayed the characters. I really could feel what Adrienne was going through. When Cam started hitting on Brian (her boyfriend). I could feel the way Cam clenched her claws into Adrienne's life. I recommend this book to people whom liked the Clique series, and a little drama in their life. In this book you'll see the good the bad and the outrageously wrong.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-06-13

This was a really good book! I liked the charactors. It wasn't what I expected...it was better. All girls from 11-17 should read it. I also recomend Gossip Girl. They are both really great

3 out of 5 stars Decent, but not great.......2006-05-27

Confessions of a Teen Nanny revolves around Adrienne Lewis, a sixteen-year-old girl chosen to serve as the nanny for the wealthy Warner family's eight-year-old daughter Emma, a precocious brat. The job pays incredibly well and Adrienne can't believe her luck - until she falls in with Cameron Warner, Emma's seventeen-year-old half-sister, and her crowd of affluent, hard-partying friends. Cameron is manipulative and dishonest, and will go to almost any length to get what she wants.

I thought this book was a decent, quick read. However, I don't think it was great compared to books such as The Au-Pairs or Gossip Girl. The character development is a little weak and I thought that the plot moved so quickly as to make it superficial. I never really felt any emotions towards the characters because it never seemed like the reader got to know any of them. At the end of the book, something happens that should have made the reader feel a little angry and sad; I experienced neither of these emotions, though.

The book is pretty well-written and is definitely a "fun" read. I liked it, for the most part, but just think that the characters could have been a little more fleshed out.

        4 out of 5 stars NYC BABY!!!.......2006-03-25

At first I did not like this book. I absolutely hated it, but I forced myself to read it because that's who I am. Yet the reason I didn't like it was because I was so jealous of everything. This girl makes a dollar a minute babysitting. She's living in New York and basically gets the chance to live the high life. This is really my kind of book. I haven't finished it yet, but I'm almost there and I'm really loving it.

2 out of 5 stars Confessions of an Unhappy Book Reader.......2006-01-29

Finally, a teen book about being a nanny! Is it a cute topic? Yes! Was it well written? No! The problem with this book is that it is pretty short and it still cannot keep the reader's attention. I found that just getting to the next chapter proved to be difficult!

Confessions of a Teen Nanny starts out with Adrienne, the nanny who is in a bind about a party that she just threw and the diamonds that belong to her wealthy employer are missing. Then, the book goes into the past and the reader learns how Adrienne came to be the nanny of this little girl Emma and how her best friend Liz works in the apartment below her. As the book progressives, the reader then learns all about Adrienne and her boyfriend Brian and how Emma's older half-sister Cameron is a bad influence on Adrienne. The book tries to include too many ideas and does not have time to finish them. Also, it was choppy and would go from babysitting Emma to wild drinking parties all in the same chapter! Once again, the topic is good but the book does not carry through. I suggest picking up a different book on the self.

This is the perfect book for relaxing on the beach. The characters are easy to relate to and the plot is pretty good. The story follows the lives of two girls working as nannies for families high up on the social meter. great book
