"See, winter comes to rule the varied year".......2003-04-15
The naturalist Edwin Way Teale wrote four books about his and his wife's 100,000-mile journey that crisscrossed America and its seasons: "North With the Spring" (1951); "Autumn Across America" (1956); "Journey into Summer" (1960); and "Wandering Through Winter" (1965). In nearly 1400 pages this quartet of books takes the reader off the beaten paths and onto a grand tour of the natural history of this country. The only other books I know of that are remotely similar to these are John McPhee's geological grand tour of the 40th Parallel, "Annals of the Former World" (formerly published as a four-volume set).
If Annie Dillard had abandoned Tinker's Creek and taken a pilgrimage across America, she might have written books comparable to Teale's opus magnus.
The author and his wife, Nellie are the grandparents everyone should have, pottering about the country, writing reams of lucid prose about their adventures. Teale's warmth and breadth of interests sustain our attention through the migration of a pod of gray whales, the discovery of hibernating poorwills in the lower Colorado desert, giant beavers on the Missouri, or a night in the 'sugarbushes' of New Hampshire. The pace might seem a bit stately to some readers, but Nature is stately. This is a trait that ought to belong to naturalists. It is the antithesis of the TV generation's notoriously short attention span.
Here then are the subjects in one chapter of the Teales' leisurely journey, "The Diamond Farm:" 'Plowing for diamonds'--'Two shining pebbles'--'A crop of precious stones'--'The volcanic matrix'--'Kimberlite rock'--'A quiet interlude'--'Diamond in the mud'--'The elegant searcher'--'Doodlebugs'--'A rare example of credulity'--'A turtle-carrying spaniel'--'Law of the White Queen'--'Sorghum molasses'--'Edge of the Ozarks'--'"Ridge runners"'--'Contracted names'--'The brown, historic river.'
Teale's black-and-white photographs form a meticulous record of their journey through an American winter, including one of Nellie in her hat, long coat, and stout walking-shoes amid wind-formed gypsum dunes. It is easy to fall in love with these books, and the couple who lived each chapter.
Wandering Through Winter: A Naturalist's Record of a 20,000.......2002-12-21
This is truly one of the most boring books I have ever read! The entire book is written in plural "We", referring to he and his wife. They travel the Southwest and Texas and do not even enter snow country until the last few chapters. The author uses words like "hence" and "thus" and goes into elaborate and boring detail about every food they eat, and bird they see. The only redeeming aspect was that I learned about Bentley's amazing research and photography of snow flakes.

Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA, 2nd Edition: The Most Comprehensive Guide for Gay and Lesbian Travelers (Fodor's Gay Guide to the USA, 2nd ed)

Amazon.com
Access Gay USA takes gay and lesbian travelers to where the hottest dance clubs are, to bars at which to meet "compatible people," and to sights that pay homage to queer culture. You won't find information on the Statue of Liberty, for example, but you will learn that the permanent collection at the Whitney Museum includes "not-exactly-straight artists like Jasper Johns" and that it occasionally features gay-oriented exhibits. Each of the 23 cities--from Atlanta to Washington, D.C.--is introduced with a rundown on its gay culture and political climate (stay away from Atlanta's Cobb County suburb, which in 1993 passed an antihomosexual resolution). After brief coverage of transportation options, the authors delve into the heart of the guide: write-ups of gay- and lesbian-friendly restaurants, clubs, and shops, as well as outdoor activities, hotels, and sights and culture. Feel like dancing the night away while in New Orleans? Rubyfruit Jungle "is definitely where the girls are--though the high-tech dance floor, 80-foot copper bar, pool tables, and (occasionally fabulous) live music also bring in some gay guys and a few hip straights." Need a place to stay in Seattle? Try the museum-like Shafer-Baillie Mansion on Capitol Hill, which is "popular with discerning homosexuals." Color-coded text and maps make it easy to find what you're looking for and where it's located. Take along a supplementary guide for directions to mainstream sights, but rely on Access Gay USA for useful, accurate information on gay culture in the cities you visit.
Book Description
Access Gay USA gives the inside story on the crowd, the scene and the important details you won't find in any other gay travel guide. What's the hottest dance club in town? What bars are where? Which hotels and restaurants make gay and lesbian guests feel the most welcome?
Access Gay USA not only provides the inside scoopon nightlife, accomodations, and restaurants, it also includes important details on local gay festivals, events, shopping, safety, visitors' information centers and more.
Written by gay and lesbian writers across the country, Access Gay USA gives travelers an insider's look at popular resorts including Provincetown, Key West and Fire Island, as well as gay magnets like New York, San Francisco and Miami's South Beach.

Needs better editing...........2000-06-26
I got this book eagerly anticipating it to be updated from 1998. Unfortunately, it was not - several notable omissions (e.g., The Sports Connection in LA), several outdated entries (e.g., The Firehouse in LA), and ther choice of spots to pick and those to omit (such as Minneapolis) make this ediiton little different than the last.
That being said, this is the best overall gay travel guide around. It keeps in line with Access Press excellent manner of organization, with good maps and reviews. I just wish the contributors and/or editors would have put more time into reviewing the choices and making sure they were current.
Author of the gay travel almanac Rainbow Handbook Hawai`i.......1999-01-31
I am proud to have contributed the Hawaii overview chapter to this book - I think Access did a fine job of covering gay information for the US in a in-the-know kind of way.
Very comprehensive and easy to follow.......1998-08-28
I picked up ACCESS Gay USA before my trip to New Orleans and was delightfully surprised at its thoroughness! The maps are fantastic because they are broken up by neighborhood and there are color-coded entries of bars/clubs, restaurants, hotels and sights that are written by people who live in the area. Plus there are little "fun-facts" sprinkled throughout giving some history on areas like the French Quarter. I had a wonderful time on my trip!!

The demon lover is an ancient theme with eternal appeal for young women, and Kathe Koja uses it to powerful effect in The Blue Mirror. Layered over the background of a contemporary and gritty street scene is the achingly poignant voice of sixteen-year-old Maggy, a loner and artist in love with a beautiful and mysterious boy named Cole. Maggy's greatest happiness is to sit for hours in the window booth of The Blue Mirror, nursing a cappuccino grande and capturing the life passing by in her sketchbook. At home she is an unwilling caretaker for her drunken mother, and her only comfort is her cat Paz--that is until Cole looks at her with those "incredibly deep and dark" eyes. The sweetness of his words and his vast need draw her in, and soon she spends almost all her days (and nights) wandering the cold streets with him, sleeping in his arms in a frigid open-air gazebo, and ignoring the other two women who trail him (childlike Jouly and angry Marianne). Not until Cole meets Paz (who greets him with terrified screeches and yowls), not until Marianne shows bruises and scrapes (from a "fall"), not until Jouly becomes a staring empty shell, and not until Maggy finally draws a true portrait of Cole, is she able to recognize the howling emptiness behind his pose of love. Koja's The Blue Mirror is an exquisite novel with just the slightest tinge of the supernatural. (Ages 14 and up) --Patty Campbell
Book Description
Sixteen-year-old Maggy's life consists of trying to be invisible at school, taking care of her alcoholic mother, and spending all the time she can at the Blue Mirror, a downtown café. There, with a cappuccino and her sketchbook, she creates a world she calls "The Blue Mirror." But everything changes when she meets Cole, a charismatic runaway. Maggy is intrigued by Cole and the girls who follow him, childlike Jouly and strange Marianne. When Cole says that he loves her, Maggy comes alive. As they become more involved and Maggy looks at him with all her heart, she sees something far more dangerous than she may be capable of handling. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Book for Young Adults. .......2007-03-28
This is the first Kathe Koja book I have had the pleasure of coming across, and I can tell any other newcomer here that it won't be my last. I am taking a course in writing literature for children and young adults, and this book is exemplary for kids to read. It teaches so much about the dangers of low self-esteem, but also has a happy resolve for two of the characters, Maggy and Marianne. It also reminds me of my younger days when I was so much like Maggy and thinking that flirting with danger was "cool." What Koja's book teaches young people is that you can never be careful or confident enough not to get hurt but, if you're smart, you will learn from your mistakes and there is no seemingly overpowering person who can take you away from yourself unless you allow them to. A really good, fascinating story that draws you in and doesn't let you go until the very end. If Cole's lines weren't so hokey and old, you might fall for him through Maggy's eyes too!
Not her best.......2007-03-17
I was less impressed with this book than I have been with her other works. The story was entertaining but not engaging nor memorable as I'd hoped. The characters lacked depth and it was difficult to emotionally identify with any of them.
A very lonely girl reaches out..........2006-12-26
16-year-old Maggy takes care of her drunken mother, draws at her favorite café and is generally invisible. Until she meets the skwatter (her spelling) Cole and his harem, then she feels alive. When she sees what he's done to the other two girls, she gets herself and attempts to get the others away as well. At first, I thought Cole was a vampire, but no he's a conventional user. "...I look at him once and I can't look away. Like the most perfect picture you ever saw, a walking wish come true: crow- black hair and loose green jacket, tall, even taller than me but when he moves it's not jerky or gawky, just pure grace, like he really belongs in his body, like it's his favorite place to be."
_The Blue Mirror_ is well worth reading.
Look Through the Mirror.......2006-06-19
Maggy's mother, Monica, was a physical therapist, an aide to the elderly, until she herself got hurt. Now, she stays at home, living off of disability checks, the child support Maggy's dad started sending after he left them, cigarettes, and alcohol. Maggy is eager to turn eighteen and get out of there, but she has another year and three months to go before hitting that faithful mark. She doesn't have any friends and she's not much of a student, but she dotes on her black cat, Paz, and she's an incredible artist. She spends her free time at a coffeeshop called Blue Mirror, where a kind twentysomething named Casey looks out for her, and where she can draw passersby without them seeing her.
Until, one day, someone does. His name is Cole, and he lives on the streets, as do Jouly and Marianne, the first as naive and childlike as the second is hard to read and bitter. Maggy begins spending more and more time with Cole, time that begins to pass by in a blur. Kathe Koja's writing style, which is sparse yet detailed all at once, is perfect for this kind of story. The Blue Mirror reads as it should, really getting into the mind of Maggy, making her neither a victim nor a hero, not a lovestruck girl nor a mature woman. She's somewhere in the middle, and once she figures out things for herself, she comes into her own. I enjoyed The Blue Mirror more than Straydog, which was well-written and powerful but upsetting, and Talk, which meant something but felt unfinished.
The Blue Mirror.......2006-04-08
The Blue Mirror by Kathe Koja is short but it is still a great book. Despite its shortness it holds great details and an even better story. Maggy is your somewhat average teenager, she doesn't like school and she hates being stuck at home, but the catch is that her mother is a alcoholic. The only part of school that she dose enjoy is art. When she does go to school during all her classes she would draw a different world inside her drawing book which she named the Blue Mirror. She dubbed her drawing pad after her favorite downtown caf?, the Blue Mirror. One day while at the Blue Mirror she meets Cole. Maggy is fascinated by Cole and the two girls that follow him, Jouly and Marianne. Maggy life is changed forever when Cole tells her that he loves her, but is he really what she sees him as or is he something else. You'll find out soon if you read this because once you start it, you won't be able to put it down.

How Reagan won and why Carter lost the election of 1980.......2007-07-23
Two veteran political columnists, Witcover and Germond, provide intriguing information on the strategists and politicians who masterminded the 1980 election campaigns. The authors argue that uncontrollable and unforeseeable events rather than issues determined the victor of this election. The authors include coverage on the campaigns of Teddy Kennedy, Howard baker, Robert Dole and John Anderson. I recommend this book for its seemingly unbiased look. A must for any interested in U.S. Presidential Campaigns.
Solid, Straightforward Narrative.......2005-12-11
This straightforward account of the 1980 race for the Presidency recreates events and the state of the USA in vivid yet concise detail. The authors show the naked manipulation, dirty moves, and diverging media coverage that was part of U.S. politics. Readers see that President Jimmy Carter was decent and honest (despite a mean streak) but his grip seemed uncertain as gas prices soared and hostages sat in Tehran. Carter beat back Ted Kennedy's primary challenge, but was not in a strong position for the fall campaign. His challenger Ronald Reagan swept easily to the nomination at age 69, but a series of foolish utterances left many questioning his fitness for the job. Congressman John Anderson's third-party candidacy started strong (23 percent in June polls), but without funds he faded fast. In the end, inflation, hostages, and Carter's low approval ratings led to an easy win for Reagan.
The authors wrote four straight books on U.S. Presidential campaigns from 1980-1992, and Whitcover wrote a very good narrative (Marathon) alone in 1976. This is a solid and straightforward narrative for history fans and political junkies.
As Always, A Must Read.......2002-07-23
Like everything written by politics' dynamic duo, this book is excellent. Witcover and Germond wrote books on Presidential elections from 1976 to 1992, taking off from where White left off (the Carter/Ford book is actually Witcover alone). This one is about Carter Reagan, and it is fabulous. It's a nuts and bolts horse race book, and one of the finest of the type. The description of Reagan as a bumbler with no real vision will surprise those who imagine that Reagan was perceived as some sort of political giant in his time. The depiction of Carter as the ineffective moderate challenged on the left by Te Kennedy will also surprise readers not familiar with the times. Although it is all excellent, the account of Kennedy's sputtering inarticulate attempt to unseat Carter is probably the best part, also notable is the treatment of the early Republican battles (although I could would have liked to here more about the lessor Republicans in the field, especially Phil Crane). Also of interest to those outside the political mainstream is Anderson's mistreatment by the political establishment. Needless to say, this presages similar troubles suffered by Perot and Nader in later elections, especially the debate committees refusal to consider a debate until his numbers had fallen down enough that he could be excluded under their rules. This action renders the sham democracy of America naked. Read It. A
Best Political Book I've Read - Exposes Carter Completely.......2002-02-03
This tightly edited classic wisely uses a straightforward, chronological approach in bringing the 1980 Presidential election to vivid life. It is not overly long as these authors' book on Bush vs Dukakis '88 election was. Well worth the hassle
of buying used.
Carter's lack of political instincts and his often contradictory personality (usually conciliatory yet capacle of pettiness and vindictiveness) are well illustrated here. The '80 primary elections are wonderfully covered, even minor candidiates such as Howard Baker and Robert Dole are covered. Teddy Kennedy's only presidential campaign is thoroughly dissected. The authors evenhandedly cover the Reagan and Carter and (remember) John Anderson campaigns. Buy it!
Superb.......1999-11-28
These authors know politics like few others and this is a terrific book. An outstanding anaysis of an election, full of insight, intelligence, and the wisdom of experienced reporters.
