Book Description
Feared, revered, and often misunderstood, venomous snakes have been a source of legend and nightmare since time immemorial. In this comprehensive volume, author Mark O'Shea has combined expertly written, in-depth descriptions of the world's common and exotic venomous snakes, highlighted by previously unpublished gripping accounts of his adventures with snakes, including personal observations and several serious snakebite episodes.
The book begins with a description of the anatomies of venomous snakes, along with their diversity and distribution. Also included is a unique in-depth look at the various types of snake venom and the ways that each type attacks the body. A section on anti-venom, including thoughts on the looming anti-venom crisis, is also presented. Information on the adaptations of ocean-dwelling snakes and issues of snake conservation as well as an examination of venomous lizards follow.
From bamboo pitvipers to deep-diving seasnakes, and from adders and asps to terciopelos and the massasaugas, this book takes an original approach to examining these enthralling creatures. Rather than the typical taxonomic categorization, the snakes are grouped by geographic location: the Americas, Africa, Eurasia, Tropical Asia, Australasia, and the Oceans. Each section is illustrated with stunning and rare pictures, many of which were taken by the author himself.
Suitable for professional snake handlers and armchair herpetologists alike, this extremely accessible book is an enthusiastic celebration of the diversity and beauty of venomous snakes worldwide.
- Explores the secret world of venomous snakes, revealing their habitats, characteristics, and hunting and feeding behaviors
- Contains thrilling details of O'Shea's own encounters with snakes
- Provides detailed information on venomous snake diversity, venom types, and conservation
- Includes a world map illustrating venomous snake distribution and detailed accounts of more than 170 species
- Features over 150 full-color photographs, many of them of extremely rare species
Customer Reviews:
Nice pictures, but..........2006-11-06
This book has some really good photos, but is more of a travelogue than a good source of information on venomous snakes. A fun read with pretty pictures. Look elsewhere for in-depth information.
A good book.......2005-11-02
Overall, this is a pretty good book. The photographs are what make it great. The text is informative, though not very techincal, so if you are looking for a more in-depth book, this may not be what you are looking for. However, for the price it is well worth it.

Way outdated.......1999-04-14
First things first: they are VENOMOUS SNAKES NOT POISONOUS. I agree with the other review it is very backward.
Informative but has not been updated........1999-01-21
I purchased this in 1997 from Dover books which claimed that it had been updated. When I compared it with the original hardback from the 1960's it was obvious that it had not been updated. Despite this, it is still an informative book for those interested in poisonous snakes.

Superb Photographs.......2007-08-29
A well-assembled, passionate, generalist overview of venomous snakes. But the pictures! Over 200 pages of glossy photographs that convey a ton of information and a lot of drama.
This book lacks bite!.......2000-04-15
I bought this book to add to my reptile library and to use a reference. Before my trip to the jungles of Costa Rica, I thought I'd read up on some of the more onery snakes that I might encounter, such as the bushmaster and fer-de-lance. Not only were there no pictures or information on the bushmaster, it wasn't even listed in the index! As for the fer-de-lance, there was a single picture but no information. I have since read the entire book, and have found it to be extremely lacking in useful species-specific information. The chapter titled "A Few Interesting Species" is very short (about 30 pages), not to mention it excludes some fairly important species! For the beginning enthusiast who just wants a general overview, this would be a good place to start, but don't let your education stop here! The book's only redeeming qualities for me were some nice glossy photos and the anecdotes written by herpetologists with snake bite or near miss experiences.
Good, but needed more detail.......1999-08-06
This was a good introductory book but did not go into enough detail for my taste.I did like the anecdotes and the pictures were great.
An often too simplistic general overview of venomous snakes........1999-04-19
This book provides a basic general overview that is good, but is geared towards the inexperienced snake enthusiast and does not get into depth on any subject. Ironically, the subject that is covered in most depth is mouse breeding. That space could have given room to more thorough species descriptions covering most genera. Also, too many photos that have been seen elsewhere in TFH Books.
Book Description
In this marvelously original and authoritative book, Thomas Palmer introduces us to a community of rattlesnakes nestled in the heart of the urban Northeast, one of several such enclaves found near cities across the country. From this unusual springboard, Palmer plunges into an examination not only of Crotalus horridus, but of ecology, evolution, folklore, New England history, and American culture.
Just south of Boston, within view of the State House, a range of low, rugged hills interrupts the suburbs. In these Blue Hills lives one of the last populations of timber rattlesnakes-easy enough to find if you know where, and how, to look. LANDSCAPE WITH REPTILE celebrates their survival with a kaleidoscopic journey through nature, literature, and history, a journey guided and informed by the snake's own serpentine passage through time. It includes a spirited defense of an outlaw species, a glance at the hazards of snakebite, an account of a multimillion-dollar development project halted by Crotalus, a travelogue, a collection of tall tales, and a meditation on the spectacle of life on earth. Like the best nature writers, Palmer lives and breathes with his landscape; but unlike most nature writers, Palmer finds his landscape is his own backyard.
Rarely has a book of natural history moved out in such original and unexpected ways from a focus so original and unexpected. A master craftsman, Thomas Palmer serves up a story with the authentic flavor of the woodlands it comes from, telling us everything we ever wanted to know about rattlesnakes-and much more we'd never dream to ask.
Customer Reviews:
Very interesting and readable, but more sociology than natural history.......2006-01-13
This book covers man's relationship with the Timber Rattlesnake in Massachusetts, with strong coverage of the park which is the rattlesnakes one remaining stronghold in the area. It is NOT a natural history book, though oddly it gave the clearest brief exposition of the evolution of rattlesnakes I ever read. I enjoyed reading the book thoroughly, and learned a lot about the historical relations of Boston residents with nature and especially rattlesnakes. Oddly, I didn't learn much about rattlesnakes that was new to me!
Mostly worth reading if the history of the Boston area is of interest to you, or if you have a special interest in the natural history of the region. Others can read it for enjoyment, but won't find it astoundingly useful.
The History of a Uniquely American Demon.......2006-01-02
A number of years ago while walking in broad daylight I placed my foot inadvertently within a foot of a western diamondback rattlesnake near the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico. The snake, who seemed to have been sleeping in the late afternoon sun and was facing away from me (fortunately), shot off in the opposite direction, rattling furiously. I could have killed it easily, as it coiled under a bush nearby, still rattling, but I did not. In fact I've killed only one rattlesnake in my life- a young diamondback that was under a board at the back door of a house in Tucson. This is not for lack of seeing them, from balcktails in the mountains to diamondbacks, mojaves and sidewinders in the desert and prairie rattlers in the grasslands, I've had my share of rattlesnake encounters. I just don't understand why I should destroy such a magnificent beast in its own habitat.
Thomas Palmer's book "Landscape with Reptile: Rattlesnakes in an Urban World" documents the history, both natural and human, of the relationship between snake and habitat and between man and rattlesnake (in this case the timber rattlesnake of Massachusetts- the easternmost species in the United States.) I've never seen this species in the wild, but it is similar in appearance and habitat to our western blacktails. Palmer has a similar appreciation to mine for the feisty reptiles, as he demonstrates in his writing.
The history that Palmer recounts is certainly bumpy. The urge to destroy these snakes has been pervasive. There are now few rattlesnakes left in Massachusetts, mostly thanks to the antipathy between man and snake. Palmer shows that from the moment the Puritans laid eyes on the fierce rattlesnake they knew they must eliminate this minion of Satan, and so it has gone. Now all the timber rattlers in Massachusetts live in the Blue Hills near Boston. The colony is protected because it exists on a reserve, but the snakes, even today, are often regarded with suspicion and even hatred. Indeed (as Palmer documents), the bite of a rattlesnake is no joke. Still the death rate from all the snakebites in North America pales when compared with the slaughter caused by the automobile. The last I heard we were in no mood as a nation to ban the use of the internal combustion engine yet.
I found a few minor errors (great auks are not penguins), but generally this is a fascinating and well researched and written account. Palmer is perhaps a bit more optimistic about our species than I am, but I also see his point- we are as much a part of the landscape as the snakes are in the long run and we as a species have some positive aspects as well. It is almost certainly correct to say that both environmentalists and proponents of the conquest of nature ascribe more power to our species than we probably have. We can do a lot of damage, but "nature" is quite capable if booting us. We cannot reclaim the biodiversity of the pre-human Pleistocene in North America as a whole (as some might wish), but, on the other hand, with glaciers covering Massachusetts there were no rattlesnakes or humans in that area then at all. As Palmer states, we are both invaders in Massachusetts and probably arrived about the same time! In the Southwest, where I live, the snakes predated humans by millions of years.
A fascinating book to read, even if you hate rattlesnakes.

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding guide........1998-11-01
"Frommer's Jamaica & Barbados" is an outstanding guide to the finest (and most affortable) shops, sites, hotels, and restaurants on the two islands. Darwin Porter and Danforth Prince also give us candid, in-depth "Best Of's" at the beginning of the book. If, for instance, you're an avid tennis player, the Best Tennis Facility in Barbados is at the Sandy Lane Hotel. And one of the Best Honeymoon Resorts is, ironically, Half Moon Golf, Tennis & Beach Club in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Other fine sections include: "Fast Facts: Jamaica/Barbados," "Calendar of Events," and "Planning a Trip to Jamaica/Barbados." The authors do a first-rate job of giving you the low-down on Jamaica without scarring you off ("There's no denying that it's plagued by crime and drugs...But many visitors are unaffected; they are escourted from the airport to their hotel grounds and venture out only on...organized tours"). If you're planning a trip to either of these two lovely islands, don't plan it without the aid of this top-notch guidebook.
Frommer's Jamaica and Barbados (2nd ed.) was user friendly........1997-11-20
The 2nd edition of this travel guide was useful, informative and well read when we travelled to Jamaica in 1994. We are planning on going back and will be purchasing Frommer's Guide to Jamaica and Barbados (3rd ed.). The guide was well segmented and easy to use. Reviews were right on and the extremely accurate price guides helped us plan for everything.
The historical information made for interesting reading and the people and local culture were exactly as described! This is a well done and very user-friendly travel guide. It's also a bargain at Amazon.com!

Book Description
Beckon the sea,
I'll come to thee....
Shed seven tears,
perchance seven years....
At the age of ten, Gwen Cooke had a strange encounter with a boy with dark, slightly tilted eyes. He came to her on the beach, whispered strange words in her ear, and then disappeared. Shortly thereafter, her family moved away from their seaside home and Gwen never saw the boy again.
Now seventeen, Gwen is returning to her childhood home. Her nana asked her to come. But Gwen knows it's time to go back for another reason: She yearns for the sea. Perhaps the sea itself is calling to her. Perhaps the memory of the boy and his haunting words are drawing her back to the place they met. Perhaps it's time for her to face her destiny.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful Book.......2007-07-11
I just finished Seven Tears Into The Sea and had to let others know how wonderful this novel is. It is an enchanting story that has left me wanting a sequel. It can be enjoyed by readers of all ages. If you want to lose yourself in a book about the ocean, magic and love, this is worth reading.
One of the best books i have EVER read! .......2007-06-06
This was a really, really, really good book! i am a lover of horse books, so i usually dont read a book unless it has something to do with horses, but when i first saw the cover of this wonderful book, i knew it had something special about it. but if you're a fan of Terri Farley's PHANTOM STALLION books, you may/may not like this book. if you are a die-hard lover of books about horses, you probably wont like this book since it has NOTHING to do with horses at all. but if you like a bit of fantasy, romance and myth, you'll just love this book. Both ways, you should really get it. The reason i gave it four out of five stars, though, is becouse it is a bit predictable, like other people said. but you probably wont guess the beautiful ending, though. All in all, it's a great book and you should read it.
Lovely.......2007-02-05
I've never read the 'Phantom Stallions' series, but after reading this, I *definitely* think Farley should end it and start writing more things like *this*. Seven Tears was a lovely description of what happens when reality coincides with myth, and I found it to be much more than just an 'enjoyable read'.
It touched my heart.......2006-08-03
It was so beautifully writtent that I will never look at the sea the same ever agian. It makes you question your own heart and what you would do if you were in Gwen's position. I couldn't put it down since I read the first page.
Love conquers all.......2006-05-20
Seven Tears into the Sea was fantasy and real life mixed together.Gwen Cooke comes to stay with her grandmother over the summer but learns much more than she expected. Mirage Point, where she's staying, is where a mysterious past awaits her arrival. Her fears are replaced with love when she meets a boy from her past who sweeps her off her feet. Who is He? Why has he come back to this place? Seven tears in the sea will tell.It was beautifully written and I hope she writes many more.
