5 out of 5 stars Budget Inversion.......2007-09-04

Amazing what Mitt Romney can do with numbers. If in doubt, do without. He pulled the 2002 winter games off on a no frills budget and turned a scandal into a triumph.

It seems he gets so much grief just because he is a Mormon, but I'm amazed at what he can do and mostly impressed by his get up and go, can do attitude. His wife says he loves emergencies and crisis situations of any kind. He turns the financing of the games from a huge millions of dollars deficit into a millions of dollars profit. Throughout the whole crisis leading up to the games, he made it the mission of the whole team to be honest and forthright with each other and the public. It's blatantly apparent that he always makes an honest million and demands integrity of his team whoever they be. This book was truly inspirational in many ways. If you don't want to read the book or even hate Mitt Romney, at least read the "Prologue" and the first chapter. I love the story of the American flag from the World Trade Center bombing being brought into the Olympic stadium during opening ceremonies. It's really awesome!

There have been other budget inversions in our nation's history. The most remarkable one happened on the eve of this country's founding and was repaired by Alexander Hamilton, our nation's first Treasury Secretary. That tale is best told by Forrest McDonald in his biography of Hamilton.

These are great stories and must reads for government financiers!

1 out of 5 stars Mitt Romney.......2007-09-01

I would never vote for Mitt Romney, and I hope he does not win. He is so full of himself and will lie just to get votes.

2 out of 5 stars Pre-nomination Mitt..........2007-06-27

With a title like "turnaround" I was expecting Mitt to explain why he has reversed all of his positions on abortion, sexuality etc just in time for the Republican nomination.

Unfortunately not.

This book is about a simpler time when Mitt did not have to reverse or hide all of his principles in order to seek higher office. It tells the story of his rescue of the Olympic Games. It is actually quite good (although Mitt takes a LOT of the credit for things that others did). Unfortunately, it also reflects on the "old" Mitt rather than the Mitt 2.0 who is running for the nomination today...

5 out of 5 stars Expect: Mitt Romney to win 2008 presidential election.......2006-12-03

Through this book, I belive in Mitt Romney. He could bring this nation together ...he has the heart and wisdom.

4 out of 5 stars Another good read........2006-10-24

The Olymic Games were a mess. A succesful turnaround required, understanding of the crisis and the ability to lead the Olymics through one its toughest challenges of the second half of the 20th Century. Read about how it was done.

4 out of 5 stars brians winter.......2007-04-10

I read the book, Brains Winter. It was about brain that is a boy that was in a plane crash and was the only survivor. He lived out the summer in the book, The Hatchet, and at the end was saved. But this book picks up as if he was not saved and shows him serving in the winter.
My favorite part of the book was when he killed the moose. I liked this part because it shows how much he has learned and it shows him making progress. I also like this part because it is exciting when the moose is attacking him and it makes you want to see what happens next. That is my favorite part in the movie.
I would recommend this book if you have read the book the hatchet because it is a great sequel/ alternate ending to the book. But if you did not like the book the hatchet I would not recommend this book to you because it is very similar to the hatchet. This is a great book and I really liked it. So in conclusion I would recommend this book if you liked the book the hatchet and if you didn't like the hatchet then this book is not for you.

Brian's winter by Gary Paulsen is great, suspenseful, intense, and enjoyable book. It is an awesome book especially if you like adventurous or survival books. In this book Brian endures many animals such as a skunk who he becomes very fond of her and names her Betty he also comes to face with wolves, deer, and the most dangerous one of them all a moose which attacked him during his hunt. Brian uses his knowledge of the wilderness to survive. He also uses his memories too help design bows, arrows, and even arrowheads. He got used too living in the wilderness so he worked on new hunting techniques. He also learned how too make his shelter more secure by packing the walls with mud making it water tight and nearly air tight. This is a great sequel to the book Hatchet. Brian is a great character considering he gives the book a lot of suspense. During the time Brian was in the woods he learned many useful things such as how to carve an animal which is a good thing considering he as improved his hunting skills. The book Brian's winter was a great book I would definitely recommend it to anyone who liked Hatchet or likes adventurous or survival books.

Book Description

Providing enough background to be rigorous, without being exhaustive, it gives readers good preparation in the techniques of modern petrology; a clear and organized review of the classification, textures, and approach to petrologic study; and then applies these concepts to the real occurrences of the rocks themselves. Requires only a working knowledge of algebra, and makes extensive use of spreadsheets. Includes an accompanying diskette of programs and data files. This book offers unique, comprehensive, up-to-date coverage of both igneous and metamorphic petrology in a single volume and provides the quantitative and technical background required to critically evaluate igneous and metamorphic phenomena.

3 out of 5 stars Intro to Ig and Met Petro.......2007-03-09

It is a well written book, but there are no color pictures. If I spend that amount of money on a hardcover textbook, I expect some color photos, especially since mineralogy and petrology deal with birefringence colors and such.

5 out of 5 stars Great intro to igneous/metamorphic petrology.......2006-09-15

This book is one of those rare things that isn't painful to read for the sometimes heady subject matter. Winters style is even humorous at times and he keeps it very simple and straightforward. Phase diagrams are explainied in detail and there are just a lot of great visuals that help students understand the evolution of magmas and the significance of isotopes and trace elements present. We use this book at GMU and I was very happy with Winter's PP slides that are available online. Very clear, very concise and fairly easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book.......2006-04-20

The book is excellent. This is the book that you have to have if you are studying igneous petrology. Plain and simple.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best resources on this subject!.......2002-02-16

As a former student of John Winters, I can honestly say that this book does a terrific job with a subject that can be very complicated! After reading this text (and taking his class!) I came away with a clear understanding of the concepts discussed. And, of course, a little humor here and there helps. The chapters flow well together yet can be read individually, and I plan on keeping this text for future reference. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for all studing geology.......2001-11-16

This is a really great book for all students who want to learn sometfing about igneous and metamorphic petrology. Written exeptionally well, with good sence of humor, it covers all the topics related to the formation and evolution of igneous and metamorphic rocks, gives you comprehensive (and comprehensible -- that is also inportant) information about rock types, their classification, textures, structures, rock forming minerals, magmaism, volcanism, metamorphism, their relationships to the tectonic settings and global lithosphere plate motion, etc. It contains so much useful information that can even been used as a handbook for those who work in or study geology, petrology, geochemistry, and geophysics. Reading this book greatly improves your understanding of the subject, so, eventually, you feel you can easily get complicated concepts and ideas, even find beauty in them, and hence enjoy your reading -- the situation which is not usually met for petrology texts.
I used this book as a textbook when I took a course in petrology last year -- and it was great help for me. And I would like to say thanks to John Winter for his really good work.

Winterdance is his account of this seventeen-day battle against Nature's worst elements and his own frailty.

Book Description

Paulsen and his team of dogs endured snowstorms, frostbite, dogfights, moose attacks, sleeplessness, and hallucinations in the relentless push to go on. Map and color photographs.

5 out of 5 stars One of his best..........2007-08-10

I'm an educator who has been reading and recommending Paulsen books for quite awhile now. I had given this book to my husband for his birthday and began reading it aloud to him on a road trip. Shortly into the book we were both laughing aloud marveling at both the adventure and Paulsen's writing. This book does not disappoint, and readers will find out more about both the man and the "Madness"

5 out of 5 stars The best yet!.......2007-06-14

There is a reason that this book has no less than a four and five star rating. It is the best read I have had in a very long time. Like the man sitting on the public bus, I tried to read this book sitting in a Doctor's office. I'm sure the patients in the waiting room were surprised I didn't come out in a straight jacket. Paulsen has once again created another great read. As a Siberian owner I too have some good stories of being drug down dusty roads screaming at the top of my lungs WHOA! The book is a great read even if you are not a dog owner. I love Paulsen's love for nature and his choice to rough it rather than contribute to it. I'm sure the choice was not easy and the life style a balance between wants and needs. Pick it up and read it then pass it along to a friend who needs a good laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-06-02

This is by far one of the most enjoyable books on the topic for a long time. The author uses humour in such a gorgeous way to make his points, I laughed so bad my girlfriend thought I'd fall off the couch when I read about both the dog-training and the race itself. Having experience with sleddogs myself, I found it very easy to identify myself with the author's experiences.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic. Read it from cover to cover in one sitting!.......2007-05-02

Once I picked it up I couldn't stop. This is an action packed, yet, informative read.

It's an inspiring, yet tragic tale of a man's battle with the unknown. Some of the things that this guy goes through are just insane! Not just for dog lovers! This is a truly great book.

5 out of 5 stars Winter Dance.......2007-04-07

Winter Dance gives a comical and yet realistic glimpse of what the Alaskan Iditarod Race is all about. After reading this account, I understood the running of the dogs and the human challenges and I laughed all along the way.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Winter Warmer.......2007-10-14

As true with any of the witch stories from Terry Pratchett, the book manages to give off an ethereal feel. Filled with lore and magic, the book gives off the feeling that magic isn't magical at all. It's all in your head.
Tiffany Aching has grown quite a bit in this book, and it shows.
The witches take a backseat in this book more than ever, and surprisingly it doesn't harm the book - but helps. Seeing as I'm an Ogg fan, I was surprised not to see more, but when all was said and done. It just WORKS.
My hat goes off to Pratchett, managing to write a truly original and flowing book after so many years. He's truly getting better and better.

4 out of 5 stars Different twist........2007-06-27

This book was a good change of pace for us. My husband and I both read Pratchett's Disc World series and found this series to be just as enjoyable in its own way. Of course, anything with Granny Weatherwax involved has to be good reading anyway. Tiffany Aching comes into her own in this book and proves herself to be a worthwhile character.

5 out of 5 stars Tiffany is back and even better than before........2007-06-11

Terry Pratchett has continued the wonderful story of Tiffany Aching he began in The Wee Free Men and Hat full of sky with Wintersmith. I can say no wrong about this book. The story is engaging, funny and even though it is a young adult book it is perfect for all ages. I have never been very eloquent, and I always get tongue tied when it comes to writing these reviews. So I hope you will take my word for it and please, first read The Wee Free Men,Hat full of sky and then Wintersmith. The story of Tiffany is one we can all relate to on some level. Losing someone you love very much, bearing great responsibility no matter what your age, learning the difference between being a leader and being a follower, plus there is the Nac Mae Feegle (sp?) that make any day a party!

4 out of 5 stars Great, but not the greatest in the series........2007-06-01

I did like the book (It's Pratchett, how can you not?) but at the same time it took a while to warm up to the characters this time. I'm on my second reading. Although the Feegles are near and dear to my heart (I wish I had a few) the best character other than Tiffany is Miss Treason. I'd love to see her more, but then she... well, you'll have to read it.
Bottom line is, buy it, read it. You won't regret it because you'll want to read it again. The more you read it the more you will like it.
In fact, the whole Tiffany series is completely readable to kids. Mine loved them!

3 out of 5 stars The Wee Kids.......2007-05-24

Most of Pratchett's books have an adult component that is really entertaining. The Wee series not so much. It is an enjoyable romp but kinda loses fantasy creds at the end. Not to say I didn't enjoy it, but his main series on witches is much better

Book Description

Neve Halloran and her daughter have shared a fierce love for the austere beauty of Rhode Island’s South County ever since Neve guided Mickey’s first baby steps along the sandy shore. Now, with Mickey a teenager and Neve’s last hope for happiness with her daughter’s loving but unstable father gone, both will struggle to make a new life together amid the windswept landscape that sustains them.

Captivated by a fragile wildlife sanctuary, Mickey will move toward womanhood in the company of a lonely boy who shares her instinctive way with the creatures of the coast. And Neve will find herself drawn to a man who has devoted his life to the sanctuary, but who is unable to share the pain of a recent loss—or reconnect with the father who still bears the scars of World War II.

As winter gives way to spring, and spring to summer, a secret will emerge that has lain buried in the depths just offshore for decades, a secret that will galvanize the small seaside community. For the waters bear their own vestige of the past—and their ceaseless rhythms may point the way to hope and new beginnings.

Lyrical, luminous, and utterly captivating, The Edge of Winter is Luanne Rice at her most penetrating and insightful, in a moving exploration of the bonds that shape us and set us free.

I love the characters and the descriptive setting. I was disappointed when I was finished reading it because I know it will be awhile before I find another book that I enjoy so much.

5 out of 5 stars One of Rice's best novels........2007-07-13

I was shocked to read negative reviews here. I really enjoyed this novel, probably one of my favorites written by Luanne Rice. Predictability seems to be an issue for other reviewers...to that, I say read a mystery if you want less predictability. But for those who want to read a novel that explores the human heart's ability to forgive not only others but oneself as well, this is a story that will keep you interested and inspired.

4 out of 5 stars A Sweet, Lyrical, 'War-Ravaged' Story.......2007-05-20

Luanne Rice's latest novel, The Edge of Winter, was a delight to read. It is not a fast-paced novel filled with mega-action or explosions. There is no big chase scene or hold your breath pivotal moment. What it does have is a slow, steady buildup of plot and an intense look at the lives of numerous scarred characters and how they are intertwined, brought together by old wars, new wars, love, family ties, death, secrets and forgiveness. If you're patient with this book, you'll come to know these characters and care for them...and miss them when you're done.

The Edge of Winter is a journey, rich with details of the land and nature--of snowy owls, windswept beaches and watery graves. It is the story of Mickey and her mom, Neve. A story of sweet, innocent first love and cautious, suspicious second love. Mickey is a teenager with a soft spot for all things wounded, including an injured owl and Shane, a lonely teenaged boy with a passion for surfing. Neve, frustrated with her `deadbeat' ex-husband, is drawn to Tim O'Casey, the ranger from Refuge Beach, where a German submarine had sank off the coast after being bombed in World War II.

When a rich and powerful man decides to raise the submarine and turn it into a museum, Mickey and Shane are spurred on to save the submarine's resting place and a piece of their history. But there are secrets that haunt the waters. Perhaps, the lost souls don't want to be raised. In this story, there are many lost souls who need saving, and that may be its only down side. It may be unrealistic to wrap up every character in a 'happily ever after' theme, but I know (as an author myself) it is so very tempting.

The Edge of Winter is a tribute to Luanne's father, a navigator-bombardier who flew in World War II, and to all the men and women fighting wars, then and now, on both sides. The author writes about the far-reaching and ravaging effects of war that carry on for generations. We are shown how forgiveness and understanding can set free even the most crippling guilt. The last few chapters are very emotional and really bring forth the author's message: "It was war."

A simple but heartfelt summer read with unforgettable characters, perfect for reading while at the cottage or relaxing on a beach. I gave this novel 4.5 stars mainly because my favorite Luanne Rice novel is still Beach Girls.

~ Cheryl Kaye Tardif, author of Whale Song, The River and Divine Intervention

2 out of 5 stars A definite skimmer.......2007-05-01

I barely made it through this book and the only way I made it through is by skimming a lot of it. It was just dull and I never really cared about any of the characters, they were too contrived and cliche. It's like the author has someone in her family or something that was a veteran so maybe she wanted to write that into a story, but it was just a completely unbelievable plot and it's a contest what I did more, skim or eyeroll.

They were called Easy Company-but their mission was never easy. Immortalized as the Band of Brothers, they suffered 150% casualties while liberating Europe-an unparalleled record of bravery under fire. Dick Winters was their commander-"the best combat leader in World War II" to his men. This is his story-told in his own words for the first time.

On D-Day, Dick Winters parachuted into France and assumed leadership of the Band of Brothers when their commander was killed. He led them through the Battle of the Bulge and into Germany, by which time each member had been wounded. They liberated an S.S. death camp from the horrors of the Holocaust and captured Berchtesgaden, Hitler's alpine retreat. After briefly serving during the Korean War, Winters was a highly successful businessman. Made famous by Stephen Ambrose's book Band of Brothers--and the subsequent award-winning HBO miniseries--he is the object of worldwide adulation.

Beyond Band of Brothers is Winters's memoir-based on his wartime diary-but it also includes his comrades' untold stories. Virtually all this material is being released for the first time. 5 out of 5 stars Must Read for History Buffs.......2007-10-01

Like most people I heard of Easy Company once the miniseries Band of Brothers came out. Major Winters' book is well written and is a fast read. It gives you a lot of information about things that happened in the miniseries that aren't covered in much detail. Additionally, the undertone of the book is about leadership. Who better to learn from than Dick Winters? I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it for anyone who liked the miniseries, read Band of Brothers, or in general enjoys memoirs.

3 out of 5 stars A rehash of BoB book/miniseries.......2007-09-19

90% of this book is just a rehash of the book and miniseries "Band of Brothers", story for story.
The other 10% consists of a number of details from Dick Winters perspective...such as how he joined the Army and became an officer. There are a number of small additions to the stories from his perspective, mostly of "behind the scenes" type additions as to what happened and why. At the end, there is a monologue on leadership. Quite frankly, get this book from your library if you want to read it. I cannot understand why so many people give this such a high rating. If you haven't seen or read "BoB", this book may be unique. For a longtime fan, its disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars A leader of the common man, in his own words.......2007-08-29

You may recall the book by Stephen Ambrose, Band of Brothers : E Company, 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne from Normandy to Hitler's Eagle's Nest, a unit history of E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment from its inception in July 1942 to occupation duty in Austria after the Nazi surrender. Much of the story focused on Richard "Dick" Winters, who rose from Easy Company's 2nd Platoon leader to 2nd Battalion commander over the course of the war. Winter's character was played by Damian Lewis in the TV miniseries Band of Brothers produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg for HBO, arguably the best small screen miniseries ever created.

BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS (BBB) is the war memoirs of Dick Winters, written with a certain Colonel Cole Kingseed, the nature of whose contribution to the whole goes unexplained in the narrative. But, no matter, really.

BBB essentially follows, and ostensibly embellishes with insider knowledge, the history of Easy Company as outlined in the original book: training at Toccoa, GA and in southern England, the D-Day parachute drop into France, the slog through Holland, the Battle of the Bulge, the discovery of the Buchloe concentration camp, the capture of Berchtesgaden, and the post-surrender occupation duty in Kaprun, Austria.

Even with Kingseed's help, Winters is no Stephen Ambrose. His narrative, aided by a reasonably illustrative photographic section, is business-like and competent but not inspired. A glaring omission is the lack of battlefield maps, which would have been especially helpful for the D-Day, Holland, and Bastogne campaigns. And Winter's makes repeated reference to a mysterious "friend" back in the States, DeEtta Almon, with whom he carries on a sporadic and sometimes awkward correspondence. Is this the "Ethel" he married after returning home? Did I miss something?

BBB is obviously the author's farewell tribute to his comrades-in-arms. As such, he can be forgiven the last couple of chapters which drip with nostalgia. If not now, when? And Winters and his men certainly deserve the written memory.

I served in the Navy for nearly eleven years. I can recall only one superior whom I would've followed to hell and back. (Mike P. at Florida's Blood Center, are you taking note?) Such a leader is rare in military and civilian life. Dick Winters comes across as such. Because of that, I'm awarding BEYOND BAND OF BROTHERS 4 stars and a salute to its author. Honor is due.

3 out of 5 stars "Beyond Band of Brothers" -AudioFile Review mistake.......2007-08-24

AudioFile got it wrong. Damian Lewis played Winters (very well I might add)in the HBO mini series and Tom Hanks co-produced it w/Spielberg. AudioFile must not have watched the HBO show or they wouldn't have got that one wrong in their review. Small potatoes, but geez, who's their fact checker and editor? Further confirms the limited use of a reviews especially by a "critic".
I highly recommend reading Ambroses book then watching the series. I am looking foreword to reading Dick Winters book as soon as I get it in the mail. Cheers. KJM

3 out of 5 stars Band of Brothers Redux.......2007-08-24

An interesting war memoir, but not much new here if you've seen the Band of Brothers series and read the book of the same title.

Winters gives a by the numbers recitation of the who/what/when/where/how of his military service, but not a whole lot about the inner person. I also thought he somewhat tarnished the idea of him I had from the HBO series by making it clear that he did what he did as much out of a competitive spirit of "being the best" than any feeling of service towards his nation. He continually comes off as justifyable connected to and proud of being one of the original men serving in the unit, but also slightly cliquish and even snobbish about "Toccoa men" vs replacements and other soldiers merely doing their duty, many of whom were treated poorly by the former. The way he seemed proud that Toccoa men sat seperately at a table during unit reunions was not something that impressed me. And the replacements who died or were maimed for their country were no less heroic.

Winters was an impressive fighting machine. But a little more machine than man, which is probably what makes it possible to do such a good job of it. He seemed slightly disdainful of those who had more human failings and desires in life (such as having a good time, which he apparently had no interest in whatsoever). The miniseries and band of brothers book made him seem much more warm and human than this book.

3 out of 5 stars Good start dragged down by mediocre writing and factual errors.......2007-07-14

As a longtime NHL fan who grew up watching the tag team of Probert & Kocur in Detroit, I am no stranger to fighting in the NHL. I was hoping with this book to get some insight into the unwritten rules and systems in place for fighting in the NHL. In the first 75 pages or so, I got that. Then...

The last 2/3 of the book is dragged down by pointless sidetracks into discussions of rule changes, economics, and other nonsense not related to "The Code". The focus gets lost and the points being made are dragged down by the mediocre writing style.

Additionally, there are numerous factual errors throughout. Referring to the Calgary/Edmonton feud as "The Battle of Ontario" would be one (though it was correctly labeled later in the book); stating that Chris Pronger and Steve Yzerman are both finesse players would be another (Yzerman, yes. Pronger, no.). Labeling Borje Salming and Doug Weight as enforces would be another. Doug Weight? The guy is a first-line center. And on and on and on.

So what starts out promising doesn't finish that way. Too bad!

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre.......2007-05-14

Very interesting topic, I loved some of the quotes.

Overall, the books thesis is disproved by itself, poor logic. I think that the author is deep down against fighting, dispite what he claims.

The real problem is that the book gets old fast. It is not a thick book, but it could easily lose half the pages. Repetition with different chapter titles. Should have just made a point with all the quotes and stories left in.

5 out of 5 stars BOOK JACKET TEXT.......2007-05-06

Hockey is, and always has been, a sport steeped in a culture of violence. Players have learned, however, to navigate through its mazes and labyrinths of physical contact by adhering to an honor code of conduct known simply as "The Code." As mysterious as it is sacred, the Code is an unwritten set of rules, the bible of hockey sportsmanship if you will, that has been handed down from generation to generation. While the Code has been around since the early days of the game's inception up in Canada, it remains a very taboo subject shrouded in secrecy. In fact, many players are simply unwilling to talk about it publicly. Everything from bench clearing brawls; to when and how you can challenge a guy to a fight; to settling old scores -- it's all covered in the Code. But, you won't read about it anywhere. Nope, there is no manual or rule book to refer to, just a way of life for hockey's elite who are lucky enough to find themselves initiated into one of professional sports' greatest fraternities.
The players know that if they break the rules of the Code, then there will be hell to pay. You see, hockey is all about respect and disrespect, and that is ultimately why these frozen warriors don't wear facemasks. Each and every act of disrespect out on the ice must be accounted for, the Code says so. If that means dropping the gloves and getting dirty, so be it -- even if that means having to fight your former roommate or best friend. Players understand that if they cheap shot a guy, or run him from behind, or carry their sticks high, then they are fair game to in turn get punched in the face. It is a very simple, yet effective, deterrent. There is a chain of accountability in pro hockey and it's been that way for more than 100 years. In a militaristic sense, it is intimidation based on the theory that a good offense can be established by having a good defense.
Hockey's rules of engagement come down to players protecting one another, factors of intimidation, and plain ol' retaliation. If a player challenges another player, then that player must answer the bell, and "show up," or face the humiliation of being considered dirty, or even a coward. Worse yet, if that player refuses to right what was wronged and defend his actions, he risks having that incident escalate to a higher level, involving additional teammates. That is when the big fellas come off the bench to keep the peace, and that is also usually when the crowd goes wild. Would you believe that by the time two heavyweights drop the gloves, that there may have been up to a dozen events between several different players that led up to that fight? That is all a part of the intricate matrix that makes up the Code.
To fully understand the significance and history behind the Code, Ross Bernstein, the author of more than 30 sports books, interviewed more than 100 current and former NHL tough guys, as well as a handful of coaches and media personalities. Their insight and memories help weave the story of why fighting is allowed in professional hockey and how the Code allows the players to police themselves both on and off the ice. It is truly a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the only true gladiators left in the world of professional sports. When they step onto the ice, it is all about the Code... all about respect, accountability, pride and honor.

3 out of 5 stars Read it if you're curious, but get it from the library. .......2007-04-11

If you want to know why fighting in hockey is not only accepted, but necessary, or if you want some privy information from some of the game's top heavyweights, then read this book. But don't spend your money for it.

There are numerous errors of fact throughout this book. One is tempted to give Bernstein the benefit of the doubt, and think it's a keystroke, like when he reports the standard size of an NHL rink as 100' X 85'. Later he lists the correct dimensions of 200' X 85.
By the time I was reading how Mike Vernon led his team to two consecutive Stanley Cups from 1996-1998 though, I knew they weren't typos. Mike Vernon wasn't the starting goaltender for the Detroit Redwings in `96-97, but he did build his stock up enough in the playoffs to get a fat contract from San Jose the following year, when Chris Osgood (and Kevin Hodson) backstopped the Wings to the Cup in '97-98.

It is impossible to type "Ontario" though when you mean "Alberta". Bernstein refers to the rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton as "the battle of Ontario", and I know he knows the difference, because he later refers to it as "the battle of Alberta". After a while of reading other completely irresponsible factual mistakes, the book would seem to be much less credible. The only thing that salvages it is that quite a bit of the text is verbatim interviews with former and current players, referees and other hockey personalities.

Here are some other items that will make a hockey fan furrow their brow -
Listing Mario Lemieux as at least 6'5", 230. Well, he ended his career at 230, but came in weighing much less at 6'4". I am quite sure he didn't get taller.
Comparing Muhammad Ali, the world's most recognizable athlete to Tie Domi.
Spinning the 1987 Canada / USSR junior bench clearing brawl as a head-to-head championship game. (The Soviets were out of contention.)
Claiming the biggest rivalry of the six-team NHL was Chicago / Detroit. Not to disrespect that for what it was, but read any Canadian's book that has anything to do with hockey, and you will know the best NHL rivalry of all-time is Montreal / Toronto.
Calling Derian Hatcher fast.

After all of that, the book is not well organized or written. I did not buy this book to read the author's personal testament to his favorite players or endure pages of redundant opinion. And you shouldn't either. If you want to read some great anecdotes, or really are curious about the necessities of fighting in hockey, then you'll find it here. But check it out from your local library.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-04-04

As a 25+ year hockey veteran, this book taught me a lot about the game behind the game. The commentary by many ex-players had me laughing out loud and my wife looking at me funny. I would recommend this book to anyone who thinks hockey is a brutal or barbaric sport since it definitely teaches the reader lessons on what provokes enforcers in the NHL.

Book Description

The Kanji Dictionary has been hailed as a revolution in Japanese language reference materials. Including over 47,000 character compounds, it employs a unique multiple-reference compound system: every compound is listed under each of its component characters. This unique, time-saving feature makes finding compounds fast and easy. Entries are arranged according to a simplified radical-based reference system; comprehensive on/kun readings index and a handy radical overview lists add other parameters for searching for entries. Newly coined terms, particularly those in new technical fields, are added to the most common and most important terms and expressions currently in use.

5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-06-02

This book is awesome. It helps me so much everyday as I am trying to teach Japanese to myself. I have a passion for languages, and this really is a great accent for my passion.

5 out of 5 stars Great Tool!!.......2007-04-02

I found it very usefull in learning japanese. It's a very versatile tool.

5 out of 5 stars Binding concerns.......2006-09-30

I hesitated ordering this book because a previous reviewer reported that he had found the binding to be inferior. Perhaps this was true in previous bindings, but the copy I recently obtained looks fine in this regard and should stand up to heavy use for some years to come.

I'm finding this an excellent disctionary in all regards, though as a beginner I have not put it to lots of use. Basically I use the New Nelson, with this dictionary as a supplement, especially for compounds. And there are times when this alternate system of radical identification is just easier than the traditional system.

4 out of 5 stars HIGLY RECOMMENDED.......2006-04-05

when I did an internet search to locate this, I found a number of negative reviews. Basically the consensus seemed to be that the character lookup system is new and therefore bad.

I disagree. The system the authors developed is the first "rational" approach in that it does not require that you know what the important radical is in order to look up a kanji. Morever, the ability to look up compounds using any character in the compound is very useful.

However, there are some negatives:
(1) the authors are not entirely consistent within their own approach.
E.g., the characters under the radical for hand are grouped under the three character radical, which is the way it is written except when it is written as a single character. However, the character for hand is written with four strokes, and you must know that in order to find it under the three stroke index.
this is the example that comes to mind most immediately, although I believe there are others.
(2) the binding is not of a very high quality. if you use this frequently (which you will), it will eventually break the spine.
i gave away my first version after it split in two. my current version is in four pieces.

on the positive side: this is so extremely useful that I am going to order a third copy.

HIGHLY RECOMENDED.

5 out of 5 stars One big lump of knowledge.......2005-08-23

I bought this dictionary just when I was beginning my fourth semester of japanese lessons, to help me with my future translations and with the learning of new kanji (which is always a useful thing, since many tend to get disappointed when they know they have to learn about 2,000 to read the newspaper).

I have always thought that with any given dictionary, there are two main issues you have to keep in mind: how complete it is, and just how easy it is to use.

I have not as of yet searched for any kanji I have not been able to find, so I'd say it is fairly complete. This is an extremely thorough dictionary, covering not only an incredible amount of individual kanji, but a whole lot of compunds (the dictionary claims over 47,000. I'll take their word.), so there is a very good possibility of you too finding the character you are looking for.

As for the second issue, I must say I'm surprised at how easy it is to find kanji. When i first heard of the system kanji dictionaries used for listing them, I was appalled. I was pleased to find, nevertheless, a full two-page-and-a-half brief manual on how to use the dictionary that gave me all the preparation I needed: I was succesfully looking up kanji in now more than 10 minutes.

Basically, there are two ways in which you can find a given kanji in this dictionary: by their readings (either the on-yomi, or the kun-yomi), and by their stroke count. The 79-radical system can be a little confusing at first, but is fairly simple to get used and not at all as illogical as one might think.

The only complaint I have so far is the lack of internal references made in the dictionary. For instance, one of the appendices lists the 1006 "gakushuu kanji" (the kanji taught in elementary school), but their are numbered straight from 1 to 1006, without the reference to the dictionary entry for each of those kanji. The same thing happens to the kanji in "the 100 most frequent kanji", "the most frequent kanji used in family names", "the 284 extra kanji for use in given names", etc. Adding that would be a real time saver if you are planning, as I am, in using the dictionary as a learning tool.

Still, it's a great tool, and I'm really convinced that this was one of my truly great buys. Definitively 5 stars.
