Steve Zissou?.......2007-05-10
It recently occured to me that the film "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou" (my personal favorite movie) is based largely off of the life of Jaques-Yves Cousteau. Anyone who knows the movie will see immediately the almost comic likeness of himself and Zissou. Besides that though, "Three Adventures" is filled with retro-esque pictures and commentaries about sea life. Sea life! Who doesn't love it? I know of no one.
Three incredible adventures........2005-01-14
For most people any one of the three separate adventures to; The Galapagos Islands, Lake Titicaca or the Blue Holes of Belize and the Bahamas would have been sufficient for a book in it's own right. With Jacques Cousteau, however, this is just another day at the office and once he has made the points he wishes to impart - it's always time to move on.
When my own second book "Diving Belize" was being written I had occasion to write to Jacques Cousteau with a number of questions. His personal reply is now framed and hangs on my study wall. It says much about this great man that he found time for such a personal reply.
Very few of those who visit the Galapagos Islands have any understanding of the special factors that exist there - factors that must always be conserved. What Cousteau has to say has not diminished with the passage of time. As far as Lake Titicaca goes, few divers get to visit there anyway and the message from this section of the book is probably the only appraisal of diving this high altitude lake. Of course, Belize and the Bahamas are very popular with scuba divers - but I wonder how many of those visitors know exactly what they are looking at when they first set eyes on those underwater stalactites at depths of over 50m (165 feet).
I remember returning from one such dive when one of our group let it be known he was very disappointed with the dive. When it was explained to him that it was impossible for stalactites to form in water and exactly how they had been created - then bent!, and then continued to form, he couldn't wait to get back into the water to take another look. This time he was not disappointed. I have also had the privilege of diving inside Ben's Cave in the Bahamas and the same comment applies.
Having been required to re-read this series of books for this (and other) book reviews, I am finding them all the more interesting because of the time which has elapsed since I read them last. In short, these books are timeless and I repeat my view that no scuba diver's bookshelf is complete without a copy of this and those other books in the same series. - but be quick, they will not remain available forever.

Book Description
Nitrogen is an essential element for plant growth. During the green revolution nitrogenfertilisation was responsible for spectacular yield increases. At present yield is balanced with commitments towards the environment and sustainable agriculture. For agro-biotechnology comprehensive knowledge of plant functioning is needed. Yield improvement and accumulation of essential nitrogen compounds is relying on selection and gene technologies.
Research on the uptake, acquisition and assimilation of nitrogen, as well as the synthesis and storage of reserve and defence N-compounds, therefore, is essential. The third volume in the
Plant Ecophysiology series integrates functional and molecular physiology with ecophysiological and sustainable agricultural approaches to get a better understanding of the regulation and the impact of environmental and stress signals on nitrogen acquisition and assimilation. The book is of interest for advanced students and junior researchers and supplies comprehensive information for scientists working in the field of nitrogen metabolism and readers interested in sustainable development.

casinos coast to coast.......2000-03-12
The title of this book and the cover is very misleading. The book gives alot of information about casinos throughout the country but it does not go into any detail about casinos in atlantic city or las vegas. I purchased this book to find out about casinos in vegas and there wasn't any info other than names and addresses. I returned this book to amazon for a full refund. The cover should be changed.
A good guide, but not as complete as advertised........1998-07-19
This book gives nice historical information to the various cities housing casinos, but has little data concerning food and entertainment and virtually no listings of "comps". The book contains reviews of hundreds of casinos around the country, but not a single review for any Nevada or New Jersey casinos, instead there is a pair of appendixes with their casino's addresses and phone numbers.

The funniest book ever.......2007-01-05
This book is probably the funniest piece of writing I've ever encountered. I literally laughed so hard I cried the first time I read it. Sharpe is a terrific writer of black comedy, and in my opinion (having read all his books) this is his best work. You will NOT be sorry with this purchase!
Perhaps the funniest book I have ever read........2004-01-28
The base premise is really simple. Guy inherits a street of houses, but they are on long leases at low rent. The only way he can earn a living is to get the residents to leave.
So he engages on a meticulously planned campaign of side-splitting terror. The methods employed to rid himself of his reluctant residents are gruesome, medieval but oh so funny.
This is Tom Sharpe at his riproaring best.
The Throwback by Tom Sharpe.......2004-01-17
This is the hilariously funny saga of a young man who has no official existence, and who is totally naive concerning the facts of life. About other things he has a good grasp of the way they work, and when he settles down with his new bride, and his new bride's mother settles down with her new husband, things start to pop. It is difficult to say more without spoiling the plot, but suffice it to say that the plot, like the contents of the Dutch Cap, will keep, and you will be in stitches, unlike the Colonel's
Scarlet Lady.
This is not a book to take to read on an airplane. It is so uproarously funny that you might well find the flight diverted and escorted to the ground by fighters, and you packed off for observation. You have been warned.
slapstick yet morbid comedy; not for the squeamish.......2001-09-14
The Throwback is my second Tom Sharpe novel (..the first being Wilt). So I was expected a non-stop barrage of comic (and absurd) scenes. Or rather, pure comedy thinly wrapped into what can loosely be called a novel. I was not disappointed.
The story, such as it is, concerns the travails of backwater yokels living in an obscure corner of northern England. The patriarch of a large estate is nearing death, and must decide on what to do about his will. His only surviving relative is a bastard grandson with unknown parentage. So he his will mandates his grandson needs to discover who his father is before inheriting money.
Ah, but there are complications. His grandson is a backward, bizarre young man who marries an extremely naive young woman from Surrey. Her mother has eyes on marrying the old patriach to get her hands on the loot. And so on. The story then spins into endless comic, sometimes very darkly comic, scenes.
My only complaint with The Throwback is, I suppose, its overall theme. In Wilt the leading character was a hapless middle-aged man who somehow gets into a world of (humorous) trouble. Much of the humour was also satiric. But in The Throwback it is the innocent people associated with the patriarch's grandson (and wife) who are cruelly victimised. Yes, it is very funny. But I couldn't help but feeling guilty about it all.
Bottom line: black, slapstick comedy in superior form. Not quite as enjoyable as Wilt, but Tom Sharpe certainly knows how to entertain his readers.
Sharpe Pointed Needle.......2001-06-03
There's funny. There's hysterical, like Blott and his capers & then there's "The Throwback".Twenty years on and there are still very few books to rival this witty, saucy tale of societal & bureaucratic bedevelment, stitching family, needling neighbours and machining the powers that be, alike. I only wish I had the ability to tinker (tailored of course) with multi-nationals in the same game. Like others before me, all my copies of this book have mysteriously never returned. I have never seen a 2nd-hand copy for sale; New is now a myth; and so I have found solace in Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat traps. Best of luck keeping your copy.

Book Description
It's been a year now, and the pain Ben Pietrak feels over the way his high school wrestling career ended just won't go away. During an aimless year in college he has an idea; what's to stop him from finding his way back into a high school lineup to atone for his mistake?
First he must overcome an ethical dilemma. After some moral acrobatics he deludes himself into believing he was cheated out of an extra season on the varsity.
Once back in high school he realizes that he has returned to a place of missed opportunities. He resists the self-imposed rigid social order and is rewarded in ways he never expected. Eventually he meets Judy, a student who he would never have had anything to do with the first time in high school. His success on the mat is tempered by a growing realization that his rationalization was flawed, but by then it's too late to turn back.
Ben's moral and romantic difficulties converge with his struggle for wrestling vindication in Atlantic City at the New Jersey Wrestling Championships.
How can he end up with everything he wants: redemption, integrity, and the girl?

Even Has Hoobastank .......2005-12-13
What a great book. I started and finished it all in the same night. It even has some Hoobastank songs in it. I didn't know much about wrestling. Now I have a new respect for the wrestlers I know.
Awesome Book About a Great Sport.......2005-12-03
It's great to see some new wrestling books coming out, because there aren't enough stories about our sport. "Throwback" contains some of the most realistic and gripping wrestling scenes ever written. Any wrestler or fan will instantly recognize and enjoy these. On top of that, there are some intriguing subplots that involve peer pressure, moral choices, and tolerance by high school students of others who are in different social circles. This is a fantastic new book about a great old sport.
Great Wrestling Story.......2005-02-18
The wrestling details are the best I have ever read. Wrestlers, their girlfriends and parents will love this book.
As a former high school wrestling standout I can honestly say that this is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. I would love to see a second edition to further tell the story and see if Ben and Judy end up meeting again. Also, how did she find out who he really was? Once again, an absolutely amazing piece of work that I would love to hear more about.

Book Description
Millionaires complaining to billionaires about more millions - too often that’s how the general public perceives baseball players. When discussions of strikes don’t involve a box from the knees to the shoulders, the game has strayed too far from its roots.
Throwbacks: Old-School Baseball Players in Today's Game celebrates those roots and highlights those players today who play the game the same way our parents and grandparents watched it played. It’s an ode to those who play hurt, who play smart, who go all out, who get blood and sweat and dirt on their uniforms and still treat their teammates and fans—and the game—with respect. To the hurlers, the hitters, the scrappers, and even the role players, you don’t have to be a star to be “old-school”; you just have to know how to play the game right.
George Castle focuses on a dozen current players who best personify the spirit of baseball’s past. These players take their original talent—be it smarts, hustle, firepower, or muscle—and give it all for their team. While Kerry Wood blows people away with his fastball, Mike Morgan does whatever he’s asked to stay in the game he loves. As Jim Thome muscles balls over the fence, Ellis Burks happily contributes the little things that can mean the difference between winning and losing.
In addition to talking to the throwbacks themselves, Castle interviewed past and current teammates, opponents, and even announcers to get an insider’s view of what drives them. It’s one thing for Castle to call them old-school and quite another when the compliment comes from contemporaries. Come read about some of the best of what baseball has to offer—both on and off the field.
Customer Reviews:
Baseball knowledge at its' best.......2006-01-30
George Castle is truly one of the most knowledgeable baseball writers on the scene today. In this book, Castle relies on his knowledge to hand select 12 of today's players, who he feels best personify the 'old school' mentality. Castle does not go down the easy route of picking only stars, although all of his subjects are certainly big name players.
The book features quotes from each player along with thoughts from their peers. Castle easily and interestingly makes his case for each player. It is hard to argue with his choice or his reasoning.
The reader gets to see sides of each player not generally seen by the public. The reader gets to know and appreciate the players as well.
Finally, GOOD stories about baseball!!.......2003-07-02
Don't you hate reading the sports page and seeing all the jerks in sports being highlighted? All the schmucks who make it hard to raise your head and say "I'm a baseball fan"??
If you're like me and hate to see the game sullied, read this. A breath of fresh air! Talks about the GOOD guys in the game, the ones who play it RIGHT. For love of the game, not just payola.
My dad always complained that the players today don't appreciate the game they way his players did. All that "back in my day" stuff. lol. Well, he changed his tune after I gave him this book for Father's Day. We're going to the ballpark whenever we can now, especially if one of the players in the book is in town.
I can't recommend this book enough if you're tired of having America's pasttime desicrated so often. Learn who the good guys are, and learn to celebrate those who play the game right. Great book!

Book Description
On the CR Ranch, Old Maude gives birth to a calf. This genetic anomaly, named Charles by the rancher's wife, soon develops the unmistakable look and disposition of an aurochs, the ancestor of all modern-day cattle. Such odd-looking young bulls are usually fattened for slaughter, but the fate that decreed Charles's birth had other plans.
Maude and her calf flee into the Colorado mountains, sharing the high-country pastures with a herd of wild elk. Hunters intrude on the idyllic meadow, and encountering Charles affects one of them profoundly: great changes await Smitty, who's stuck in a soured marriage and a meaningless job, and dreaming of a better life. Smitty's search for love moves us to reflect on the true meaning of hope, the passions that drive us, and the barriers we place between ourselves and our desires.

An inspired and intuitively humorous tale of a genetically flawed calf and his mother.......2006-04-04
Charles The Throwback by Ted Own is an inspired and intuitively humorous tale of a genetically flawed calf and his mother as their escape from slaughter brings them far greater adventure then expected. Engaging readers with such a unique and catching storytelling style, Charles The Throwback introduces the reader to the thought process of a cow and the very same everyday tediums which humans and cows alike endure. Charles The Throwback is recommended to all general fiction readers, particularly those enjoy farming related stories.

Book Description
The book is a delightful yet serious attempt to assist parents with childrearing in a society that has been removed from the simple lessons of raising responsible children. The foreword addresses questions that parents ask me about my knowledge of child behavior. I present the If-then theory to give them food for thought on how a teacher can write a book on parenting when she's never been a parent.
I also qualify myself by giving a summary of my 'throw back' years or my growing up days and the strategies that my parents used to raise responsible children. I share the successes that the 'old-school' bringing up created for all nine of their children.
The book proceeds to explain ten thought-provoking steps to good parenting. It describes real-life situations and supplies verbal responses to different problems that often arise. For each step, the If-then clause is applied to further give thought to the 'problem'. And more importantly, Scripture references from the Bible are included, which will cause parents to examine a higher source of correction. In the appendix, the parents can 'grade' themselves by using my tongue-in-cheek grading system.

Schlock Theater.......2001-10-11
First, let me just say: Wow. This book is like a 70's drive-in creature feature where you can see the zipper on the monster's back. It's entertaining in a throw-your-popcorn-at-the-screen kind of way, but it's also hilariously and unbelievably bad. (And a cheap rip off of Graham Masterton's THE MANITOU.) A woman grows a monster on the back of her neck and after several attempts by doctors to remove it (it grows back at one point) the monster is born and the woman runs around with a bloodthirsty critter attached to her back. I was laughing hysterically through the last 50 or so pages when the monster grows legs and starts carrying the woman around on it's back and runs loose in a mall with a SWAT team chasing it. If you enjoyed old horror movies like IT'S ALIVE and BASKETCASE, then you'll have fun with this book. I'm giving it three stars because I appreciate the kind of horror schlock that inspired it, but again let me just say: Wow.
