Book Description
Since 1956, when the late Boughton Cobb wrote his field guide to ferns, this book, unchanged in all the years since, has become the classic on the subject. Now the New England Wild Flower Society (NEWFS) has completely updated the text and added 100 color photographs. The incredibly beautiful full-page line drawings by the late Laura Louise Foster have been reproduced from the original art. New subjects include a section on habitats and conservation, a glossary of botanical terms, and a chapter on gardening with ferns. The New England Wild Flower Society is the nation's oldest organization devoted to the conservation of wild plants. It recently received a number of grants to celebrate its "Year of the Fern." NEWFS books published by Houghton Mifflin are Wildflowers and Native Trees, Shrubs, and Vines, both by William Cullina.

A superlative field guide with gardening information too.......2005-10-15
Would a field guide like this make a good holiday gift for a naturalist or gardener? Absolutely-if I didn't own it already it would be my number one choice. This is the best researched field guide I've ever seen. It is very very satisfying and is going to become a must-have for anyone who hikes the northeast or would like to garden with ferns, and for all botany students of the region. A book like this is more than just a guide-it trains the eye to open up to an entire world of subtle differences in nature. There is a kind of poetry in this guide usually not seen in this type of writing-BRILLIANT! Get one soon to catch the ferns in fall color-or do a little armchair gardening over the winter.
Book Description
More than 500 species of northeastern and central North American ferns are described and illustrated, with helpful details such as color, leaf shapes, measurements, and root forms. An illustrated key aids in quick identification.
Customer Reviews:
Does a good job of covering a limited scope.......2000-10-24
I have found this field guide to be very useful, though frustratingly limited in scope. The illustrations and diagnostic data are very nice, though somewhat limited - for example, immature frond forms (when different from mature) and unique fiddlehead forms are not shown. On the plus side, this guide covers fern allies such as club mosses. Also, don't let the black-and-white illustrations put you off, they carry more useful information than color photos (of which there are some) of a fern would. My most serious beef with this field guide is that it ignores ferns which are marginally hardy or hardy only in the warmer areas of Northeast and Central North America. Don't expect to find information on Thelypteris kunthii, for example. Final analysis: If you are willing to accept its limitations, you will find this guide to be very useful.
Good pocket field guide for the amateur field bontonist.......2000-08-10
The black and white pen and ink illustrations in this field guide are excellent. Like all Peterson Field Guides, the book begins with a short description of ferns in general and a brief glossary of taxonomic terms particular to ferns. The book is arranged (somewhat frustratingly so for the more experienced Field Botonist) by major plant characterstic. The taxonomic keys are sparce and generally ineffective. Each species identified in the book has a detailed drawing and a description written in easy to understand language. These descriptions include the principle defining characterstics of each fern, and a description of its habit.
The book lacks a information about each ferns geographic distribution and prominance. This sometime leads the amatuer to mis-identifying the sometime confusingly similar fern species.
This book comes in true field guide size. It is light and compact and easily taken to the field. Dispite its weaknesses, I still take it to the field when I go somewhere outside the mid Atlantic after even after six years of wetland delineation field work.

A bit early.......1999-10-19
A great guide for partying, good suggestions for travellers, but it is a year early. Which gives everyone many months to start planning and get their reservations made.
This book tells you exactly where to party like it's 1999!.......1998-07-08
Richard Knight's Millennium Guide is funny, sharp and packed with information. How did he get all this stuff? It includes details of NYE 1999 parties right around the world and it also answers every conceivable millennium question from the computer bug problem to where the whole thing really starts. Excellent - and what a great idea for a book!

6 Months to Live .......2007-02-01
This book is funny and sad. It made me want to keep reading to find out what happens next in the story.
Dawn is a 13 year old girl who just started having some tests done to her and when she got the results back the doctor told her she had leukemia a type of cancer kids get. When she found out she had cancer she had to be in the hospital for a while until she reached remission. When she got to her room she found out that she had a roommate named Sandy who also has leukemia. They became very good friends and do everything together. They were with each other when their hair started to fallout. When time pasted Dawn had an infection and had to leave Sandy but she came back weak but good. She found out Sandy was in remission and Dawn got mad. When time came Dawn was in remission too. Dawn was new at this and she wanted to see Sandy again so she took the nurse's offer and went to camp. They got to camp and two guys keep staring at them in a good way and things start to get serious between them. Before they knew it camp was over and they had to go home. Sandy writes a letter to Dawn saying that she is back in the hospital in Mexico. About a week later a telegram came telling Dawn that said "We lost are beloved Sandy yesterday 10A.M she died peacefully-no pain." Dawn started to cry hoping the pain would go away.
I would recommend this book to someone who is 12 or 13 because it is a very powerful book with many sad moments in it.
Audrey S. review.......2007-01-11
I liked this book. It was funny and sad. It made me want to keep reading to find out what happened next in the story.
Dawn is 13 and was just tested for cancer. The tests are back and she has leukemia. She has to stay in the hospital until she goes into remission. In the hospital Dawn has a roommate named Sandy. They become best friends and do everything together. The day came and Sandy went into remission. A few days later Dawn went into remission too. Both girls decided to go to cancer came together. They had the time of their life there. Dawn and Sandy met two really cute guys and liked the a lot. Once camp was over Sandy had a relapse.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes to read sad books because the ending is really sad.
Six Months to Live.......2006-12-07
Six Months to Live was one of the best books I've ever read. It's about Dawn Rochelle and she's just been dienost with cancer .When she was in the hospitl her roommate Sandy turns out to be her best friend. This book is a real tear jurker. Will Sandy and Dawn survive their cancer?
Just read it.......2006-08-29
This is a wonderful book, the whole series is wonderful. If you don't like tear-jerkers then don't read it, or any of them. Together, all of the books work to show an image that many books of this kind leave out. They tell a story.
Amazing.......2006-03-13
Dawn is the typical thirteen year old girl. She loves going to the mall, cheerleading practices, cute boys, and... going to the hospital? Dawn's world is turned upside down, after one visit to the doctors. Placed into a hospital, Dawn meets Sandy. The two girls become the best of friends, and help eachother through hairloss, chemo, and their life. Once in remission, Dawn thinks she'll never fit in, and feels so out of place. And just like all of Lurlene McDaniels books, there is a health scare, romance, and just a chapter where you cry like a baby. But this book sends off a good vibe, and I suggest if you see a copy, READ IT!

Book Description
There are plenty of books on dying, most of them treatises by experts or tributes by family members written mainly for their own catharsis. But until now there has been precious little the average young person would want to read.
Now, through a true story that has already profoundly affected thousands, author Daniel Hallock engages the generation least prepared for life's inevitable end. Six Months to Live really isn't about dying at all, it's about how our lives can take on new meaning when we live in the awareness that our days here are numbered.
All of us, whatever our age, are touched by death, whether that of a friend or family member, old or too young, sudden or painfully drawn-out. Each death reminds us of the frailty of our own existence, so we avoid these unsettling speed bumps on our road to success and longevity. How different it could be if we realized how much the dying can teach us about how to live.
When Matt Gauger was diagnosed with terminal cancer a month before his wedding, he fought back with everything from chemo to prayer. But more importantly, he let cancer transform his approach to life, far beyond the necessary coming to terms, learning to cope, and letting go. By the time the disease destroyed his body, he had found such certainty of meaning and purpose that death held no terror for him.
Six Months to Live isn't just Matt's story, though, but that of the friends and family that surrounded him during his final struggle, and how the experience changed each of them. In intimate detail, Matt's wife, parents, brother, doctor, pastor and peers tell how they struggled to accept his impending death.
Daniel Hallock's candid account will encourage readers to face (rather than avoid) life's most important questions, and help them to live their own lives to the full.

Six Months to Live.......2002-11-20
This book made me feel sad and happy all at the same time. Matt a young man given a short time to live after being diagnosed with cancer, doesn't shun away the world but opens himself to everything. He becomes very spiritual and in touch with God through his illness. I had a very hard time being able to put the
book down. The way his family, friends, and community reacted is incredible, they were very compassionate and supportive. I would suggest this book to anyone.
What a brave man.......2001-06-12
I don't live far from Farmington,PA and infact I have been to the Bruderhof and these ppl are so kind and wonderful..After reading this book I felt such a pain for the family and friends that had to watch there dear son, brother, husband and friend live all those months of hell..But, What a strong man Matt was and for him to live each day in pain but still carry a smile..The book was not hard to read at all and was well understood..Really made you feel like you were there throughout the days and hours with him..I picked the book up in a local resteraunt here and read within a day..My thoughts are with the family..
Death, Stared Down.......2001-03-26
A 22-year-old's battle against cancer might seem an unlikely topic for an uplifting book -- but Six Months to Live is certainly that. It's the story of Matt, a young man who, faced with death, refused to quit living. Matt wasn't a hero, and the writer of his story doesn't make him out to be one. Six Months to Live steers clear of the cliches and catch-phrases we often use to help us "make sense" of terminal illness. Instead, the book is realistic: it shows us Matt's darkest hours as well as his triumphs; his doubts as well as his faith. That's why, at the end, the reader is not left feeling Matt's life was "wasted"; rather, that it was used for a cause bigger than any one of us. We're all dead men, the movie Gladiator reminds us. Like as not, we don't get to choose how or when we die. But we all can choose how we meet death. Six Months to Live can help us choose well. Thanks to Matt.
