Book Description
Join three Yellowstone National Park experts in their remarkable discovery of the park's 200-plus "new" waterfalls, most of which the American public, and even Yellowstone park rangers, have never before witnessed. These trailblazers are the first to document the existence of these spectacular natural features--at least 25 of which tower to heights of 100 feet or more--and the authors do so through striking photographs, engaging text, and detailed maps. The book also features the park's 50 known waterfalls and reveals the untold stories surrounding many of them. For nature-lovers, adventure-seekers, and Yellowstone aficionados alike The Guide to Yellowstone Waterfalls and Their Discovery is a landmark work, combining natural and human histories with unbelievably rare geographical discoveries.
Customer Reviews:
A remarkable assemblage of waterfalls.......2001-02-25
The authors of this book have tracked down, and provided color photos, of no less than 250 waterfalls in Yellowstone. While some were previously well known, many are new discoveries or re-discoveries of falls not seen in many years. That so many notable falls could occur in one area (even as large as Yellowstone)is remarkable; that so many significant falls could have remained to be discovered is downright ming-boggling. The authors provide interesting histories and excellent photos of each fall, and the book will be a joy to read and look at for any waterfall lover. My slight quibble is that while they provide coordinates and category of access for each fall, they don't provide directions or hiking distance. (In fairness, it can well be argued that if the information isn't readily available elsewhere for a given fall then the trek is one that should only be undertaken by a hardcore hiker.) Despite the quibble, this is a great book for any waterfall lover, and especially for one planning a trip to Yellowstone.
Driveguide, hiking guide and backcountry exploring guide!.......2001-01-20
Waterfalls are one of natures natural high producers. Do a search on negative ions and you will find that falling water creates an abundance of negative ions in the air. Breathing in this charged air mixture gives a body a natural, invigorating, temporary high. In their book, the authors have obviously been infected by this condition as evidenced by there irrepressible quest to seek out more and more sources of the negative ion producing waterfalls.
This book scores high marks on many fronts. With three different authors contributing, the book does a marvelous job of providing a general education on waterfalls. By clarifying the terms and classes of the waterfalls described, author Rubenstein helps to give personality and color to each individual plume.
Author Whittlesey's extensive historic perspective of the park gives each of the known waterfalls a vivid background description. When the authors caution you not to lean over the trail barrier too far to view a particular waterfall, they then follow up with the details of the tourist that died falling down that very cliff at the same site. As a drive guide to Yellowstones' waterfalls this book cannot be beat. All of the easily accessed falls are covered and described in detail including seasonal variations. For the typical tourist driving through the park, this book will appeal immediately because of the revelation that many more falls are visible with just a short car stop and walk to a viewpoint.
As a hikers guide to the Parks waterfalls this book will have even more appeal. Having spent over 15 years researching the back country for this book, author Mike Stevens has been to many of the falls on repeat occasions under a variety of conditions. In this aspect the book becomes a must for anyone hiking in the back country of Yellowstone. All of the standard trail recommendations are detailed along with accurate descriptions of how to find the falls and experience them in their best display. There are so many falls in the Yellowstone region that this book will certainly add color to almost any hike in the park.
Yellowstone Park is like a huge treasure chest of wild gems. By revealing and putting names to some of the previously `unknown' falls the authors have dug a little deeper into the treasures and helped us realize there is a lot more value in this park than any of us realize. For the experienced Yellowstone back country explorers this book is a must. The authors even give GPS coordinates to many falls that have previously not been written about. Many of the falls have no trails and require at least an overnight stay in the back country. Others are so inaccessible that the authors honestly suggest that the strenuous hike is not worth the effort. The authors even give suggested locations for other waterfalls that have yet to be discovered.
Being a Yellowstone park fan myself I give this book my highest rating and only wish it would have been available when I was employed in the park. The authors show a true enthusiasm for the whole park not just the waterfalls. This book will make you want to get out and get some of those negative ions from the cascading waters. From the text and photos it is apparent that the authors have already had a healthy dose of their own!
A Landmark Book on Yellowstone.......2000-12-07
This is a truly amazing book on Yellowstone. I have not seen one like it. Although much of the book is devoted to newly discovered waterfalls, all the famous ones are in here too. Like Lower Falls, Tower Falls, and the Gibbon Falls. It makes this a great book for any lover of Yellowstone. Whether you've been to the park for a day or visited every year since childhood like myself you will enjoy this book. Even if you just want information on a beautiful part of America.
It has so much information. Waterfall heights, locations, streams and much much more. The hundreds of photos, which are all color, are beautiful; and the numerous maps are very helpful.
If you love Yellowstone, waterfalls, or just great natural scenery you'll want to add this classic to your collection.
An amazing book...........2000-11-12
It is remarkable that in the 1990s, in a place as frequently visited as Yellowstone Park, the authors could discover (and rediscover) nearly 300 waterfalls. And some of the discoveries are amazing: 400-foot-high flumes, waterfalls that begin at a cliff-face and disappear thirty feet later, cascades that twist 180 degrees in their descent.
The photographs range from adequate to stunning, and the descriptions of locations--complete with UTM grid coordinates--make the guide useful to hikers. A summary description explains the place, type, and height of each waterfall, along with a quick evaluation of the effort involved to find each one. As a result, it's a useful guide for everyone from tourists to car campers to serious trekkers.
But the main impact of The Guide to Yellowstone Waterfalls is to reinforce the majesty of Yellowstone Park. Anyone who has spent any time in Yellowstone knows its unique combination of serenity and wierdness: it is a land of oxymorons--and waterfalls.
Book Description
Waterfalls of Yellowstone includes 42 of the most beautiful waterfalls and cascades of America's premier national park. Color photographs and Trails Illustrated Maps assist in locating and enjoying these special places. The text easily locates and describes each falls. The color photography is outstanding.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty decent little book.......2005-08-27
Well this book by Mr.Maynard is a lot better then his Grand Teton book- he has color and B&W photo's of each waterfall he listed in his book. Good description of each falls, the main minus in this book is not a very good detailed maps, decent direction's though.
The first 31 pages of the book the writer is writing about the park it self- a three page story on waterfall photography-which can be found in his other books.
Each waterfall listed the writer tells you the height of the falls and how far roundtrip it is to get to the falls, he does not mention however a "difficulty" rating on how hard it is to reach the falls (like found in Mr.Plumbs Waterfall Lovers Guide)
Overall I think it would be a good guide to have on your trip to Yellowstone.

This is a great book for a novice on ornamental grasses. The pictures are great. Many suggestions for combinations of plants. All the obligatory information on zones, latin names, growing conditions, etc. are included but not in a technically overpowering manner. I purchased it for myself and am now buying it as a gift. I wouldn't give mine up!

Appealing to children and adults.......2007-09-06
This is another installment in the hugely popular Lucky Luke series. This English-language edition by 9th Cinebook helped get my 12-year-old hooked into the Lucky Luke series. One of the fun aspects of the Lucky Luke books is his fictional interactions with real-life personalities from the Old West: Billy the Kid, The Dalton Gang, Jesse James, Calamity Jane and others.

Book Description
William H. "Billy the Kid" Bonney Jr. loves to take risks. But Billy's luck runs out when, during a train heist, a passenger recognizes the nineteen-year-old outlaw. Fed up with his bad ways, Sheriff Willis Monroe, Billy's own cousin, decides to track him down. The Kid's two-timing partners are hunting him, too--and a posse wants Billy (and the sheriff) dead.
This gripping fictional tale imagines William Bonney's fate had his life of crime taken a very different turn. Fans of adventure will be riveted by Theodore Taylor's fresh take on a legendary character.
Includes an author's note about the real Billy the Kid.
Customer Reviews:
An interesting look at a legend through a blend of fact and fiction.......2005-06-29
He was dead by the time he was 19 --- though some say he might have been 21. Legend has it that he killed a man for every year of his life and that he was one of the best shots the old west ever saw. But this is the stuff of legend. The real truth surrounding the short life of William H. Bonney Jr. (Billy The Kid) is pretty much speculation. So Theodore Taylor has taken a blend of fact and fiction to create this version of the "Kid's" life.
Covering the last few weeks in the young desperado's life from an unfortunate train robbery to his grisly death in a gunfight, we are given both the Kid's point of view and that of his cousin and friend, sheriff Willis Monroe. Willis has known Billy since they were both youngsters, and when he hears that there's been a train robbery, he can hardly believe that the boy could be involved. With the hopes of bringing him safely back and clearing his name, Willis sets off to find him. His wife Kate also wants to believe in Billy's innocence but at the same time is frightened for her husband's safety.
Billy, for the time being, had taken the "easy" way out. Trying to make some quick money, he has fallen into the company of three notorious thieves. What seems like a good opportunity turns out to be poor judgment, and before everything is over, Billy kills one of the thieves (in self-defense), takes all the money and runs. But even when he meets up with Willis and agrees to go back for a trial, the cards seem stacked against him. He escapes from the jail and he and Willis end up in a desperate, bloody gunfight against the original thieves.
Was he a desperado, an outlaw, a murderer, a robber, or just a kid in the wrong place at the right time? 1881 was a hard, ruthless and mostly lawless time in the old west. In Taylor's carefully crafted interpretation, he creates a likable Billy in a fast-moving, good old-fashioned western. The "Author's Note" at the end explains how he came about writing this fiction and a little of what is known of the real Billy. Taylor, author of THE CAY, has written a book that will perk the interest of anyone who would like a taste of the old west and its legendary characters.

Book Description
Many books have been written about Billy the Kid's life after he fought in the Lincoln County Wars and became an outlaw. But until now few have chronicled his early years. The Kid is a historically accurate novel that examines some of the factors influencing Billy's decision to become an outlaw. The book follows the Kid from birth through his involvement in the Lincoln County Wars, including stories of the first man he killed in a knife fight, his escapades in Arizona, and his captures and escapes from the law.
Book Description
Penned with deranged glee by Powell and illustrated by fan-favorite horror artist Kyle Hotz (The Agency and The Hood), Billy The Kid's Old Timey Oddities starts with Billy the Kid free to roam America, having faked his own death. Free, that is, until Fineas Spoule, a.k.a. The Human Spider, discovers his secret. Now, afraid of being exposed, Billy finds himself in the service of a caravan of carnival sideshow performers who have unfinished business with a mad scientist none other than Victor Frankenstein himself! This twisted lovechild of spaghetti westerns and Hammer horror flicks combines Powell's humorous fast-paced storytelling and Hotz's quirky macabre visuals for a story that the whole family will love... if they're they kind of family that love alligator men and miniature boys fighting monstrous mistakes of science with the help of the fastest gunslinger in the West!
Customer Reviews:
This book is fun like League of Extraordinary Gentlmen and Dark Tower Series.......2007-01-25
This story is a Western with a sprinkling of horror:
The story starts with Billy the Kid travelling after he has faked his own death. He expects that he will get away scott-free without people recognizing him, and trying to turn in him into the police. However, someone does recognize him and threatens to expose him. He is brought before a group of sideshow freaks that are planning a treasure hunt expedition to Dr. Frankenstein's castle. Billy the Kid reluctantly excepts a place in this motley crue and goes on the expidition. Throughout the tale you get see Billy the Kid develop as a character and have more depth than just rascally outlaw. The use of Dr. Frankenstein in this story as a continuation of the original story was fun even if it wasn't completely accurate to his original character.
I will say the story was a little bit tamer than I expected but still has bite, enough to think an acceptable age would be around 16 for this tale. The idea of a western story with some horror story connections lends itself to more grittier tales, but this story still fits well in both genres. It definitely seems reminiscent in spirit to either The League of Extraorinary Gentlemen or The Dark Tower Series. Also makes me think of the Doomtown card game. (Which probably means very little to most people who read this review.)
The art was good, but nothing spectacular.
All and all the comic is pretty much what I expected. There was enough humor, action, and story to entertain, but not necessarily be memorable. The humanity of Billy the Kid, shown by the shadow of his past makes this comic above average. A good read for everyone, regardless of what genre they enjoy, but unless you reallly like westerns or the concept sounds really good I don't think I would recommned buying it. Their are so many other graphic novels out there and this is just a good one, not a fantastic one.
Disappointing.......2007-01-24
When I first clapped eyes on the beautiful (supposed) cover by Eric Powell, I was sold. I'm a big fan of Westerns and of Powell's artwork and sense of humor, so this seemed like an easy sell.
The first bit of disappointment hit when I received the book. The cover was not the Powell cover that Amazon shows. Instead it was done by a different artist. This development lead quickly to more disappointment as I found that all of the art was done by this same guy. Now, he's not a terrible artist or anything, but I would have much rather seen Powell's art carry the story. I didn't care for the actual artist's style much.
More disappointment came when I found that the story had none of the Powell humor I came to love by reading his Goon series. And with a name like Billy the Kid's Old-Timey Oddities, you expect a bit of that humor.
I quickly turned around and sold the book to someone else, so no harm done. But I'd love to see Powell tackle a Western-themed book all by himself.
H.P. Lovecraft's Wild West.......2006-08-22
William Henry McCarty, a.k.a. William H. Bonney, a.k.a Billy the Kid, was gunned down by lawman Pat Garrett in 1881. Or was he? Writer Eric Powell posits otherwise, working with the assumption that Garrett unknowingly killed the wrong man and Billy, wanting the law off his back, took the opportunity to change his name and disappear. In Powell's version of events, however, Billy doesn't just vanish into obscurity. Instead, he's recruited by a band of sideshow freaks (or "biological curiosities") to take on the vile Dr. Victor Frankenstein (whose death was also exaggerated) and his minions in Europe, where a valuable treasure awaits them.
"Billy the Kid's Old-Timey Oddities" is a hoot and a holler, a fun, yet vaguely disturbing book that blends Old West attitudes and gunslingin' with Old World atmosphere and a varied bag of macabre, malformed grotesqueries.
The story is illustrated along unsettling lines by Kyle Hotz and leads readers through a twisted tale filled with tentacles, decapitations, manacles, syringes, blood and other fluids. Let's hope there's more to come.

Holy Smokes! .......2006-04-05
So...Billy the Kid fakes his death and ends up travelling with a freak show trying to track down the golems heart and find Dr. Frankenstein. Freakin' Hilarious!!! The art is great, the story is very amusing and the ending is good. I like how it leaves things open if Powell wants to continue, but it also makes it a complete story so you are not waiting for more. I recommend this highly....If you like The Goon, you will like this.

A Spur Award-winning Author
By the age of twenty-one, Billy the Kid was thought to have killed a man for every year he'd been alive. He evaded the law more times than anyone could count and proved that no jail could hold him. But Sheriff Pat Garrett finally caught up to the Kid on December 23, 1880, and brought the desperado to trial for the murder of a sheriff two years prior. Now - before judge, jury and the entire country - it is time for him to answer. Billy, however, has other plans. . . .
Customer Reviews:
Very good speculation.......2006-08-27
There is so little details about what really happened during this trial, but Boggs is very imaginative at filling in the blank spots, to put this historical event in a tangible perspective for those of us that weren't really there to be able to see how it was. He even does a good job letting the reader know what is fact and what is pure speculation, so you come away with a good sense of what really happened, all the while having read an interesting and entertaining book. Any Kid afficionado should read this one.
