4 out of 5 stars The dogs who found him... that "who" just gives him away........2007-09-21

The grammar error in the title shows me that this book is written by a true dog lover. A charming collection of writings, it shows a man making a life for abandoned animals in the face of catastrophe, health trouble and money worries. He really does concentrate on the dogs... what they do, where they go, what they like, what they need. Most of all, this is a book about who they love. The author is overwhelmed at times, though he knows he's chosen (or been chosen by) his own troubles. I have misgivings about pit bulls as a breed, and it's clear that Foster is completely aware of the dangers himself, but what a lovely dog family he's assembled. Highly recommended, but only for those of us who see animals for the fascinating, complicated characters they can be.

5 out of 5 stars The Dogs Who Found Me.......2007-09-04

All three of our pets found themselves in the frightening position of having been left behind (One in AZ, one in MA and the third in NH). How they found their way into our hearts and home is miraculous! Consequently, we have a very real fondness for the topic of this book. It's an excellent story and was packaged to arrive in excellent condition! The Dogs Who Found Me: What I've Learned from Pets Who Were Left Behind

3 out of 5 stars Easy Read.......2007-08-10

I found the author to be a hypocrite on a few issue surrounding pet onwership and rescue. He voiced his opinion strongly about people who are unable to meet the expenses of pet ownership, yet he had a sponsor pay all vet bills for heartworm and various other health issues, as well as covering other expenses for an injured sick dog he couldn't bear to live without. He would have found himself in the exact same position as some of the 'unfit' petowners he described if he didn't have the animal contacts.

The author didn't talk much about how his obession with rescuing dogs fit into his social life. While social situations were in fact discussed,I never felt I had a good understanding of how this man managed a full time job, numerous animals (some with health and emotional issues)and a social life outside of his few friends who also spent their time picking up strays.
The book is not one which has remained in my home. After I finished it I took it to my vets office while picking up one of my dogs who had just been neutered at my own expense~no sponsorship here!

4 out of 5 stars Anything for the dogs.......2007-07-07

I got this book last weekend and read it in a day. It's a very good and easy read, that will make you smile and tear up along the way.
I've been pretty dog-obsessed lately and i was almost sad when i finished it, i wanted to read more.
The world, and dogs, need more Ken Foster.

4 out of 5 stars dog lover.......2007-05-13

I love dogs and have 2 spoiled ones. I always wish I could afford more and be able to help many others. I have taken a couple in and helped to find homes for them, but Ken Foster has done so much more. It would be a better world to live in if we could be this kind to all animals in this world.

Book Description

Millions of dogs and puppies are abandoned each year, resulting in a world filled with stray dogs of all breeds and sizes. Many of these strays come to a bad end, but every now and then a
stray dog is found by a compassionate person--whether picked up on the street or picked out from an animal shelter--and given a second chance. Some of these dogs are lame, blind, ill, or simply unwanted. These dogs are special. And so are the people who have chosen to give them a second chance. Found dogs seem to be especially grateful, loyal, and loving. They, who have sometimes been rescued from death’s door, become beloved members of families, giving affection, companionship, and solace. They become productive members of society as service dogs, therapy dogs, and search-and-rescue dogs themselves. Observers might
say that these dogs are lucky, but more often the people who have adopted them think that they are the lucky ones.
Second Chances is full of wonderful photos and words by people who have given dogs a second chance. Celebrities from Mikhail Baryshnikov to Oscar de la Renta and everyday heroes who have found dogs of all sorts--from sleek greyhounds
to scruffy mutts--share their tales of discovery and canine-human friendship.
Second Chances is a tribute to these extraordinary dogs and their people. It
is a testimony to the gift of love and salvation. And, in each case, it is difficult to say just who has saved whom.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you want to help homeless dogs find a loving family!.......2007-05-02

This book is full of profoundly moving stories, both heart-rending and heart-warming, and it is beautifully photographed. The author donates all the profits from her books to humane organizations to help rescue and rehabilitate abused and abandoned pets so that they can find new, loving homes. So if you love animals, buy it for yourself, your family, and your friends; you'll be glad you did!

4 out of 5 stars Another book of happy endings..........2007-01-05

I purchased this book along with "Found Dogs: Strays Who Landed On Their Feet" and I enjoyed the happy ending stories just as much. As an employee at a local rescue group, I get to see on daily basis the many unhappy endings of strays. This book was a nice break from the many unhappy realities facing strays.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent sequel to Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet .......2006-04-11

I originally bought Found Dogs : Tales of Strays Who Landed on Their Feet and fell in love with the book. One of our kids Miles is a rescue dog and I can definitely relate to the stories in that book and this sequel.

This book is twice as big as the first and the stories are just wonderful. The stories are pretty much everyday people telling their tales of giving dogs a second chance at a great life. It made me feel great to know that there are others in this world who take care of their dogs as much and sometimes as nutty as my husband and I do :). If you've got a furry friend, this book is SO worth it - another 2 paws up from this pack!

5 out of 5 stars A Dog Lover's Joy.......2005-10-14

This book was given to a special friend that loves dogs so much she adopted one. Her dog brings her much happiness and their story could be included in this sweet book. I recommend it for all dog lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking and heartwarming.......2005-09-07

The stories in this book are wonderful. The various backgrounds from which the dogs came from are heartbreaking, but the 'second chance' portions of these stories are very heartwarming. Every animal lover should read this book.

Nate, the great detective, has never solved a case for his mother before. Can he do it? With his dog, Sludge, Nate gets to work. They look, sniff, climb up, bend down, push, and pull. 5 out of 5 stars Nate the Great and the Monster Mess.......2006-12-07

Nate finds a note that had been slid under his door. It's from his mother. She's lost the recipes for her monster cookies. Nate loves those cookies, Strawberry Draculas, Chocolate Frankensteins, Cinnamon Werewolves. Even though Mom doesn't like werewolves, she bakes the cookies for Nate anyway.

It's up to him and his dog sludge to find that recipe. And so they go on the hunt, real detectives them in this learning to read book that, like all the Nate the Great books, is excellent for beginning readers. My girls love it and your children will too.

5 out of 5 stars Cinnamon Werewolves! Yes!.......2002-09-27

For over twenty adventures now, Nate the Great, the young detective, has searched for his friends' missing things. He's searched for missing stamps, weeds, boring beach bags, missing pets, musical notes, stolen bases, and even saved the King of Sweden (kinda!). In all of this, his mom has been quietly supportive. He leaves a note on the refrigerator to tell her what case he's working on, that he will be back, and that he loves her. But in NATE THE GREAT AND THE MONSTER MESS, Nate investigates the disappearance of something his mother has lost: a special cookie recipe. If Nate and his dog Sludge cannot find the list, Nate will never again enjoy Strawberry Draculas, Chocolate Frankensteins, and Cinnamon Werewolves (his favorite cookie!). Nate is on the search, and he's reluctantly rounding up the usual suspects.

Marjorie Weinman Sharmat is the author of over twenty Nate the Great adventures, including NATE THE GREAT STALKS STUPIDWEED, NATE THE GREAT AND THE BORING BEACH BAG, NATE THE GREAT AND THE HALLOWEEN HUNT, and NATE THE GREAT AND THE MUSHY VALENTINE. She has written dozens of books for young readers. She named Nate the Great after her father. Her books have been named as Children's Choice books and Junior Literary Guild selections, and been picked as Books of the Year by the Library of Congress.

Although most of the Nate the Great series have been written as long stories, this book is one of the series' more recent additions to be broken into chapters. The short, punchy chapters make great stopping places for reading out loud when traveling, or to dole out as rewards-or for those nights when little listeners don't want to go to bed right away and can ask for "just one more chapter." Reading Nate the Great books out loud is always a treat, especially for the reader willing to do character voices and make the most of the terse, first-person narrative. In this book, Nate encounters Annie and her dog Fang, Rosamond and her cats, and Oliver who follows everybody-including Nate the Great on this case. Again, Marjorie Sharmat makes perfect use of logic and clues, building an intriguing mystery that young minds will ferret out and understand.

The entire Nate the Great series is recommended to younger readers and parents who love reading to their children that might have tired of (or memorized!) all of the rhyming Dr. Seuss books. This series makes a great transition to leap from to Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys later.

I loved this book so much.I recently adopted a dog after many years of only pedigree versions. I will always save a life and adopt from now on! My other 3 dogs with papers aren't so sure of this decision!

As a dog lover and a current owner of 4 dogs (2 of whom were rescues) I applaud each and every pet owner in this book and I thank Elise Lufkin for putting these stories together so that they may be enjoyed by the people who rescue any animal or is thinking about rescuing. The joy and love these pets bring into a home is unbelievable.

As the mama of an adopted stray dog from the ASPCA I am very interested in saved cats and dogs,(I have also taken in a stray cat). To me rescued animals are the best pets. The books that I have read are all happy books, there may be a lot of saddness in them, but for the most part they have a happy ending.
Amazon is full of books on cats and dogs, the selection can't be beat!

Whereas many tales of homeless pets end with less than stellar results, this book and its companion book, Second Chances: More tales of Found Dogs, concentrates on the happy endings of many pets who found loving homes. The book is beautifully done with pictures illustrating the joy of having adopted a loving pet.

3 out of 5 stars Not Overly Charming.......2007-03-07

The only reason I read this book is because there is one character with autism. Katani, of Beacon Street Girls (Boston) fame has an older sister named Kelley who has autism.

Katani is friends with a group of girls in the Boston area. They call themselves the Beacon Street Girls as a nod to their neighborhood. Although I didn't care for most of the characters, save for Katani and her family and the adult characters, I did like the realistic way Kelley was presented. The second youngest of 4 daughters, Kelley has limited social skills; her verbalizations are bizarre to those who don't know her; is highly charged; cannot stand bright lights or loud noises. At the story's opening, the girls go to an outdoor festival. Disaster abounds whn the BSG mascot (an adorable mixed breed dog) runs away. The girls go frantic; send each other text messages and e-mails; blame and self recrimination abounds. Kelley has a believable meltdown as she loves the dog and can't bear noise and confusion.

Luckily, a program called hippotherapy (horseback riding treatment) for autistic youth becomes available. Kelley is enrolled. Katani is enrolled against her will as Kelley has to have "a peer to supervise her." Naturally Katani grows to love riding; proves to have talent and enjoys trotting off with her sister.

Another disaster - the stable may close due to lack of funding. As you have already guessed by now, the BSG saves the stable; the dog is returned and readers will have to wade through the book to find out how.

A bit too girly for me - I could not stand the inane and irksome "OMG" talk among other things; pink and lavender (IKKKK); those silly girls save for Katani and her sisters, but I did like the Boston setting.

A good book to pair this one with is A challenge for Brittany (Choose the right)

3 out of 5 stars THE BEST BOOK EVER!!!.......2006-12-07

Marty- the BSG's little mascot is lost but is finally found by the famous Robbie Flores. Flores offers 10,000 for the little dude and half of the BSG want to accept it. Katani would like to except the award because High Hopes riding stable (a stable that helps autistic kids like Katani's sister horseback ride)would be shutting down if it doesn't raise 10,000 dollars in a week. Charolotte though is putting articles about Marty everywhere, desperatly trying to find Marty. The BSG has one HUGE problem:they don't know if they should take the money or not. A MUST READ!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Missing: Detective Partner!.......2002-11-22

Nate the Great is a detective and a guy known for being able to find lost things or solve mysteries. However, in NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF, Nate experiences his most personal mystery of all when Sludge, his dog, detective partner, and best friend, ends up lost in Weinman Brothers, Nate's favorite store. Since no dogs are allowed in the store, Nate has to leave Sludge outside. Nate goes inside to buy a gift for Sludge and has to stand in a really long line. Worried about his doggy partner, Nate goes back to the entrance to check on Sludge and finds that Sludge is gone!

NATE THE GREAT AND THE BIG SNIFF is written as a chapter book, something the last few books in the series have changed to. The change is welcome because the chapters provide brief bits that can be read while on the go, and they all end up with cliffhanger endings that make the young reader want to pick the book up again or the young listener want to sit down and hear more. As always, the author presents a very real mystery with very real possible solutions before ultimately solving Nate's latest case. The usual cast of Annie and Fang and Rosamond show up in the story, and Claude puts in an appearance to round out the neighborhood. The way that all of the group bands together to help Nate find Sludge is really great and heart-warming. Over the years, Nate has been bothered by these people, or presented hard mysteries by them, and it's good to see that they help him out when he needs it, and that they actually care about Sludge. When the case is finally solved, Marjorie Weinman Sharmat and Mitchell Sharmat reveal that Sludge is every bit the detective that Nate is. The full color illustrations by Martha Weston are detailed and expressive. This is a truly great book for young readers and parents who love to read aloud to pre-readers.

Young readers will enjoy the whole Nate the Great series because the tales are told in a familiar fashion and involve a solid cast of characters that return book after book. These books are also some of the best to choose for read-alouds to pre-readers or for the last story before bedtime because they can be read in just a few moments. The Nate the Great mysteries are fun and addictive for both parent and child.

I have almost 1,000 children's books that I've collected over 20 years. I would rank this charming book in the top 20...probably top 10 for the 0-4 age group. It was a favorite of my son's for about 2 years and the wear the book shows illustrates that. I have memorized every page, and never tired of reading it. It is constructed with heavy pages that hold up much better than the average (non board) book. There are just the right amount of words on each page to hold the child's interest. The interaction of each page involves your child and will keep them on the edge of their seat/bed with anticipation and excitement with every read! It is among the very best of interactive books for young children. You won't be disappointed !! I am buying 3 more for each of my children's children, since you never know about re-printing in the future...and it's definitely a book to enjoy forever.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and fun book.......2006-03-20

My two year old loves this book. We have to read it to him three times in a row each night. The pop-ups are sturdy enough for him to manipulate. This book is fun and I highly recomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful book.......2005-08-02

This is a charming little story that my 3 year old son insists on hearing over and over. A must have for any Kipper loving family.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely adorable!! A must have!!.......2004-10-12

My mom bought this book for my son when he was about 18 months old. It was one of his favorites until he was about 4 years old. It's probably too young for ages over 5. But for under 5 it is the cutest book I've seen. The pictures are great. It is very interactive with awesome pop-ups. And the ending is just so unique. I highly recommend this book. My 3 year old loves it now. I'm online right now to buy a copy for my niece/nephew-to-be.

5 out of 5 stars Kids Love This One.......2006-11-05

I frequently buy books for my granddaughters, ages two and four, and the McDuff books are real favorites of theirs. The illustrations are wonderful in all the McDuff books. These books are always picked by the girls for me to read. They love them.

5 out of 5 stars McDuff is not a Yorkshire.......2006-02-15

I just wanted to point out that the synopsis of this book says that McDuff is a Yorkshire. He is clearly a West Highland White Terrier ("Westie"). Whatever you call him, though, McDuff's stories are wonderful.

    Book Description

Alex and his dog Patch are out for a walk when the boy discovers a little toy mouse dressed in a red vest. He falls in love with the tiny creature — promptly named Reggie — and takes it home. Soon, “lost mouse” signs appear in Alex’s neighborhood, but he ignores them — after all, anyone who could lose such an adorable thing must deserve to lose it. His friend Brian tries to convince him to return the mouse to its heartbroken owner, but Alex won’t hear of it. The boys quarrel, and poor Patch ends up in the middle. Brian storms off — and so does the jealous Patch. When Alex calls the dog to his supper, the gate is open and Patch is gone. Alex and his parents search the neighborhood, but no Patch. They put up flyers, but still no Patch. Whoever’s found a beloved pet like Patch wouldn’t just keep him . . . would they? Alex’s struggle to overcome selfishness rings true with young readers.
