            Book Description

The planktonic algae known as the Haptophyta occur in all the world's oceans, sometimes occurring in 'blooms' so dense that they can be detected by satellites. Some species produce sulphur compounds that may contribute to the problem of acid rain. Others strongly affect the carbon dioxide balance between the ocean and the atmosphere, thus becoming linked to the proposed 'greenhouse effect', and others produce powerful poisons responsible for killing fish and other marine life. This is the first book to deal comprehensively with this important group of unicellular organisms, and each chapter has been contributed by an expert in the field. The topics covered include all major aspects of haptophyte biology, including structure, biochemistry, ecology, climatological and economic importance, fossil record, evolution, and systematics.

Frommer's 2000 France is a beautiful package, with nearly 800 pages of stellar text sandwiched between gorgeous color photography and comprehensive maps of Paris and France. The pictures are stunning; showcasing the diversity of France, with the controversial 71-foot glass pyramid of the Louvre and the ancient grandeur of the Cathédrale Notre-Dame, a village street in Rouen and a Loire Valley château, plus Monet's gardens, Rhone valley vineyards, market day in Dijon, and a game of petanque along the Côte d'Azur.

The "Best of France" chapter offers even more highlights, and ultimately helps narrow the field to a doable itinerary. After browsing the "best of" lists on romantic escapes, driving tours, museums, vineyards, upscale restaurants, and affordable hotels, you can begin to plan your trip in earnest. Focus on Paris, Brittany, and Champagne country, for example, and you can use those chapters to decide on lodgings, plan activities and sightseeing excursions, and dream about specific restaurants and bakeries. To flesh out that dream, an appendix is available on French food, as well as France's history, art, architecture, and wine. There are also appendixes of basic menu vocabulary, an online directory, and useful French terms such as Je voudrais acheter ce livre and Au revoir, Je vais à l'aéroport. --Stephanie Gold

                  Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Maps need A LOT of work.......2005-01-09

Since I've been to Paris several times, I primarily bought this book to get updates on the restaurants and hotels around town. What we noticed is that the Frommer maps for these are HIGHLY inaccurate. In one case, we walked a half-hour to where a restaurant should be, based on the map, only to find out that it was actually over a mile away (and less than three blocks from where we'd started)!!!

I'd highly suggest a different guide if this is what you'd be using it for.

3 out of 5 stars You're going to LOVE FRANCE.......2004-09-26

I've made >20 visits to France all together. Here are my reviews of the best guides....to meet you r exact needs.....I hope these are helpful and that you have a great visit! I always gauge the quality of my visit by how much I remember a year later......this review is designed to help you get the guide that will be sure YOU remember your trip many years into the future. Travel Safe and enjoy yourself to the max!

                  Frommer's
These are time tested guides that pride themselves on being updated annually. Although I think the guides below provide information that is in more depth or more concise (depending on what the guide is known for), if your main concern is that the guide has very little old or outdated information, then this would be a good guide for you.

                  Lonely Planet
Lonely Planet has City and Out To Eat Guides. They are all about the experience so they focus on doing, being, getting there, and this means they have the best detailed information, including both inexpensive and really spectacular restaurants and hotels, out-of-the-way places, weird things to see and do, the list is endless.

                  Michelin
Famous for their quality reviews, the Red Michelin Guides are for hotels & Restaurants, the Green Michelin Guides are for main tourist destinations. However, the English language Green guide is the one most people use and it has now been supplemented with hotel and restaurant information. These are the serious review guides as the famous Michelin ratings are issued via these books.

                  Fodor's
Fodor's is the best selling guide among Americans. They have a bewildering array of different guides. Here's which is what:
The Gold Guide is the main book with good reviews of everything and lots of tours, walks, and just about everything else you could think of. It's not called the Gold guide for nothing though....it assumes you have money and are willing to spend it.
SeeIt! is a concise guide that extracts the most popular items from the Gold Guide
PocketGuide is designed for a quick first visit
UpCLOSE for independent travel that is cheap and well thought out
CityPack is a plastic pocket map with some guide information
Exploring is for cultural interests, lots of photos and designed to supplement the Gold guide

                  MapGuide
MapGuide is very easy to use and has the best location information for hotels, tourist attractions, museums, churches etc. that they manage to keep fairly up to date. It's great for teaching you how to use the Metro. The text sections are quick overviews, not reviews, but the strong suite here is brevity, not depth. I strongly recommend this for your first few times learning your way around the classic tourist sites and experiences. MapGuide is excellent as long as you are staying pretty much in the center of the city.

                  Time Out
The Time Out guides are very good. Easy reading, short reviews of restaurants, hotels, and other sites, with good public transport maps that go beyond the city centre. Many people who buy more than one guidebook end up liking this one best!

                  Blue Guides
Without doubt, the best of the walks guides.... the Blue Guide has been around since 1918 and has extremely well designed walks with lots of unique little side stops to hit on just about any interest you have. If you want to pick up the feel of the city, this is the best book to do that for you. This is one that you end up packing on your 10th trip, by which time it is well worn.

                  Let's Go
Let's Go is a great guide series that specializes in the niche interest details that turn a trip into a great and memorable experience. Started by and for college students, these guides are famous for the details provided by people who used the book the previous year. They continue to focus on providing a great experience inexpensively. If you want to know about the top restaurants, this is not for you (use Fodor's or Michelin). Let's Go does have a bewildering array of different guides though. Here's which is what:
Budget Guide is the main guide with incredibly detailed information and reviews on everything you can think of.
City Guide is just as intense but restricted to the single city.
PocketGuide is even smaller and features condensed information
MapGuide's are very good maps with public transportation and some other information (like museum hours, etc.)

Rick Steves' books are not recommended. They may be an interesting read but their helpfulness is very poor. They don't do well on updates, transportation details, or anything but the first-time-tourist routine and even that is somewhat superficial on anything but the mega-major sites.

5 out of 5 stars I would have been lost without this book........2003-08-15

This guide offered everything I needed for my trip, from exact prices on everything, colorful maps, and exciting coverage on everything going on in the country. It also covered all the historical, artistic, and cultural treasures in France. With ratings and reviews, I was able to choose a hotel and restaurants with ease. This book is all you'll need to get around in France!

3 out of 5 stars Poor descriptions - would not buy again.......2004-04-09

My husband and I just got back from a week in Paris yesterday. This was our only guide book. We travel frequently and usually purchase either the Fordor's or Frommer's guide. I chose this book because it has the "best of" in the front. Most beautiful restaurant etc... We did go to Defours (I am not sure of the spelling) which was listed as the most beautiful restaurant and indeed it was beautiful. Most of the meals we ate were guide recommendations and they were indeed good. However my main gripe with this book is that the descriptions were somewhat inaccurate and were incomplete. For example if I had 3 or 4 sentences to describe a store, restaurant etc... I think I most anyone could have done a better job. The purpose of the descriptions is so the reader can make an informed choice as to where to spend time and money. To guide the reader as to what atmosphere, food, etc he would most enjoy. I understand the descriptions must be brief however in the description I think the author focused on the wrong elements. For example there was a store inside the Pompodour that had cool gift items inspired or designe dby Phillipe Starke. My husband and I thought it was an average size store or even a Department Store in fact it was a very tiny Musuem gift shop. I think its called Prin Temps Design or something. The author stated it was only loosely associated with the Grand Department store. In the description the author should have stated the store was a very, very tiny gift shop - in fact the smallest Musuem gift shop I have ever been by far and I have been in many, many Musuem gift shops the world over. Some of the restaurants he described as "beautiful" were only charming. He recommended the Bar Crillion which we went to and it was a very, small hotel bar and empty. It was a Sunday night. Had the description described how small and intimate it was we would have made another choice.

To find the restaurant "Caberet" we spent 45 minutes trying to find it but the map was inaccurate or just not clear. My husband and I are both highly educated professionals who use maps regurlarly with no problem and we could not find the restaurant from using the map in the guide. A few days later we saw that it was on a square. The description would have been clearer if it stated that the restaurant was on an open square. We probably would have been succesful in finding the resaurant and not wasted so much time. I could go on and on...

As my husband and I spend quite a lot on air fare, meals, hotel and precious vacation time it is frustrating to waste time on inaccuracies or to "guess" at where your going to. We would have purchased a different guide book but it was difficult to find English guide books and when we found one we only had a few days left. In the future we have decided to purchase 2 guide books for week long expensive trips. That way if one is incomplete or inaccurate we can always use the other.

I always buy a guide book when I travel and rely heavily on them to save me time and money and guide me to those experiences I would most enjoy. I have never been dissapointed in a guide book as a whole ...until now.

3 out of 5 stars Better than most, comprehensive information.......2004-02-16

This book has comprehensive information. It offers more than some other books.

I do wish this book weren't so dry and encyclopedic. I prefer the Fodor's Paris book because it gives more than a dry description. Fodor's gives a first-hand account of actually being in the restaurant/hotel/attraction. Fodor's also gives more information about where to find the best values, the most interesting experiences, and how to get the best service.

This book is better than Rick Steve's guide, but not as good as Fodor's.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent book, but not all complete.......2003-05-19

I bought this book, and also Rick Steves guide to Paris. This is the book we consulted to get around on the Metro (what stops for what destination), and for places to eat in the various parts of town. The bad thing about this book is that it does not give detailed "touristy" information about the various spots. This books is more concerned about getting you there, making sure you a place to stay and places to eat! So you need a rudimentary guide to explain what you're seeing, when it was made, who made it, etc. Rick Steves has some of this. Basically, this book is excellent for logistics, but not for much else.

                    4 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2002-11-01

I used this book for a recent trip to Paris and thought it was great. The hotels were spot on, the attractions info. was comprehensive, and I loved the fact that it gives me a "best of" in the beginning of the book. That's totally cool. Overall, I thought it was a great book.

5 out of 5 stars Please note the previous review is not for this book!.......2002-10-22

If you check the date the review is posted, it is in January, 2002. Since Frommer's Paris 2003 was published in September, 2002, the review was written 9 months before the book came out!

As the editor of Frommer's Paris 2003, I'd like to point out that the book is revised and updated every year, and that the authors, Darwin Porter & Danforth Prince make a note of what's new, what's changed, what's closed down (either permanently or temporarily) and any tweaks and changes involved in traveling to and staying in Paris.

This year's edition includes information on such new accommodations as the brand new Hotel Francois 1er, among others; and reviews new restaurants like La Maison Blanche, and Korova; they remind us that the Petit Palais is being renovated in 2003, and that Disney has added another section to its Paris theme park in "Walt Disney Studios."

                    5 out of 5 stars Funny Stuff.......2007-07-21

Funny series, really funny. The sexual humor may be a bit crude at times, and I'd reccommend the book for ages 16+ definitely, but it's entertaining without being totally tasteless.

Tokyopop appears to have gotten ahold of the licence, but they've changed the title to "Boku to Kanojo no XXX"so it looks like it'll be possible to get further volumes after all.

2 out of 5 stars This Manga = Great! ADV Manga = Not so Great........2007-04-10

Your and My Secret is a great manga. It's some of the best gender bending I've seen in a manga - a truly unique plot with interesting characters.

HOWEVER! Before buying this title, please be aware that the publisher (ADV Manga) has basically stopped releasing anything - leaving all of its series in the lurch and giving the fans no information whatsoever about what's going on. This volume was released in 2004 and at this time (mid 2007), this is STILL the only volume out. Sadly, they've been letting far more popular series than this languish in the world of non-releases, so when (if?) they do get back on track, I doubt this will be a series they'll really be worrying about.

In other words, this is a GREAT manga that you'd probably enjoy (especially if you like gender benders ;)). Unfortunately, you'll probably never be able to read any more of it than this. That means no plot/character development, and more importantly - NO ENDING. EVER.

So save your money until ADV gets their act together and starts releasing things again... or another (better) publisher picks up the license.

5 out of 5 stars A review of Your & my secreat .......2007-01-28

Excellent book all I can say is when is Voulum 2 comming out

5 out of 5 stars one of the best gender-benders out there.......2006-05-08

This is the gender-bender genre at its best. Gentle Uehara, the main character, has an unrequited love for Momoi, a beautiful but rude (and in my opinion hateful) girl. When they accidentally switch bodies, everyone immediately notices the change in their behavior and comments on how much more manly Uehara has suddenly become and how much more gentle and ladylike Momoi has become. Uehara continues loving Momoi, but Momoi has no interest in him before or after the switch. While Uehara just wants to reverse the change, Momoi almost immediately decides she likes things better this way.

The twist I like the best about this manga is Uehara and Momoi's best friends. Momoi is attracted to Shina and asks her out soon after the change. Similarly, Uehara's best friend, Senbongi, starts pursuing him. For a gender-bender, it's a pretty insightful story. The switch happens pretty early on, so this volume covers a lot of ground. It's almost immediately apparent that Uehara makes a better girl than Momoi, and vice-versa, but it's unclear whether they'll remain that way for good, or if Momoi will ever return Uehara's feelings.

One thing I disliked about this volume is Momoi. I think we're supposed to hate her and her over-the-top bad personality can be funny at times, but often, her selfishness, shallowness and general meanness are too much to take. Her grandfather's (the one responsible for the body switch) frivolity is also a little annoying. The good parts more than compensate for these minor irritations though. Uehara's best friend is an especially good character; initially completely uninterested in Momoi, he almost immediately falls for Uehara after the switch. Uehara is taken aback by this aggressive side of his best friend that he's never seen. For the reader too, it's a surprise, because in the beginning, Senbongi seems like a nice but unremarkable side character. It's great seeing a totally different side of Senbongi's personality emerge, after the switch.

Anyone who enjoys gender-benders or comedies will like this story. The art is great, as well. At the pace ADV has been going though, I only hope that the next volume gets released in my lifetime.

4 out of 5 stars story about switiching bodies and changing genders.......2006-02-16

There are sexual references in here, but no sex. It is a highschool story. It's about a girl who switches bodies with a boy. This is due to an accident involving the girls experimenting grandfather who seems insane. They have to learn to adapt to their new bodies. The girl was originally a masculine sort of individual who begins to enjoy the switch (especially looking at her new body). Both of their friends begin to fall in love with their new forms. Momoi seems to like her friend, but the guy has trouble dealing with it. What i hated about it was the comedic element plus their seemingly easy adaptation to their new bodies.
