Book Description
No one wrote about nature with more eloquence or passion than John Muir, and this collection of essays, spanning nearly three decades of his work, shows him at his best. These writings about his travels to the lakes, canyons, and mountains of the American West make a fitting addition to the John Muir Library Series, our ongoing program to reissue the complete works of the first great conservationist author.
The two dozen magazine articles and letters in this collection present the natural treasures of an unspoiled land as white settlers found them a century ago: the Great Salt Lake, the San Gabriel Mountains, Mount Rainer, the Grand Canyon.
Here are Muir's accounts of a "perilous night" caught in a snowstorm on the summit of Mount Shasta; his rapture at sailing through Puget Sound and seeing the forests of Washington (as well as his ire, describing the proliferating lumber mills, at "this fierce storm of steel that is devouring our forest"); "A Geologist's Winter Walk" in Yosemite, where he found a "living glacier" with which to prove his controversial theory that glacial erosion had formed Yosemite Valley; "the feathered people" - golden eagles, ospreys, hawks, jays, hummingbirds, and others - "sailing the sky and enlivening the rocks and bushes through all the [Grand Canyon] wilderness"; and much more.
Filled with Muir's characteristic boldness and emotion, these stirring essays will appeal to his loyal readers today, just as they did a century ago.

Elegant, moving writings from America's pioneering naturalist
Customer Reviews:
The original arch-druid.......2001-12-28
Long before the late David Brower's environmental activism at the helm of the Sierra Club and after led to his designation as the `arch-druid,' John Muir was making epic journeys through the (then much more truly wild) wilderness of the U.S. western states and jotting down his observations as well as his thoughts on Nature and life in general. "Steep Trails" is a collection of pieces covering Muir's various travels through and about Northern California, Nevada, Utah, Oregon, Washington and the Grand Canyon. Writing mainly in the second half of the 19th century, Muir describes the terrain and its characteristics in simple and effective prose, but with the meticulous attention to detail and accuracy of a hard-nosed naturalist. One also cannot help but be impressed with the fact that Muir usually set off on his wilderness treks (often during the winter) with only the most meager of supplies and without the high-tech equipment and various Gore-Tex accoutrements deemed indispensible by today's rugged outdoorsmen. What comes out of Muir's writings and sets him apart from most of his contemporaries is his view that America's vast natural wealth and beauty should be appreciated in and of themselves, above and beyond their functional and economic value as natural resources to be exploited. Despite his firm belief in `progress' and `civilization' as these terms were understood in the nineteenth century (hence his often disparaging commments about the local Indians), at several points Muir showed that he understood the potential dangers of excessive economic development and industrialization.

Mississippi Forests and Forestry
ASIN: 1578067103 |
Book Description
This collection of black-and-white images conveys the story of human impact on Mississippi's forests from the pioneer era to the present. Photographs gleaned from public and private archives, tell a visual tale of the development of Mississippi's forest industries. Historic locomotives course through the woods, oxen drag big timber over rutted terrain, and lookouts perch atop Forest Service towers eyeing the horizon for telltale signs of fire. Photos of life in a portable logging camp reveal early hospitals, lumber company stores, mobile homes, and the advancing technology of logging machinery. The hatchet and torch give way to the cross-cut saw, the steam-driven loaders, the gas chain saws, and eventually the bulldozer and the Buschcombine. Portraits of the major players in the industry's investment and development provide a human face to the powerful history of Mississippi forestry.
The soft pulp lumber used to crate ammunition and to build many hastily constructed army barracks across the country during World War II finds documentation here. Mississippi pine housed the American war effort. After harvesting came inevitable difficulties in land management caused by over-cut terrain. This book documents how the forestry industry returned to renew its resources, replant its fields, and maintain an ecological balance for future generations.
"Timber" includes images by such noteworthy photographers as Clifford H. Poland of Memphis and John N. Teneussin of New Orleans. The Poland photographs alone, many previously misidentified and now on display as Poland's work for the first time, offer a level of artistic achievement that parallels the industrial might of their subjects.

Train Whistle Guitar: A Novel
ASIN: 0226257215 |
Book Description
Leon Forrest, acclaimed author of Divine Days, uses a remarkable verbal intensity to evoke human tragedy, injustice, and spirituality in his writing. As Toni Morrison has said, "All of Forrest's novels explore the complex legacy of Afro-Americans. Like an insistent tide this history . . . swells and recalls America's past. . . . Brooding, hilarious, acerbic and profoundly valued life has no more astute observer than Leon Forrest." All of that is on display here in two novels that give readers a breathtaking view of the human experience, filled with humor and pathos.
Customer Reviews:
As fine a book as you'll find.......2004-12-31
For several years this book was lost, and then it had a resurgence as it was reprinted in 1998. Now it seems to have faded once again, which is understandable. It's dense and difficult to read and Leon Forrest never had a critic to champion his cause the way Ishmael Reed had Henry Louis Gates. That said, let's keep it our little secret. People don't write books like this anymore, which is the loss of readers everywhere. First published in 1973, the book has the slimmest of plots but its imagery and emotional intensity hold it together. It's postmodern and human at the same time. It's a book that defies easy description, and its best summary is the book itself.

trees of mississippi--just terrific.......2006-01-28
what a delight. very informative. pictures are incredible. easy to understand and follow. great for school age children doing reports.
Excellent!.......2004-07-08
A great book! Very informative - there is a lot to learn about tree identification in Mississippi.
Poor photos make the book hard to use.......2003-08-05
The idea of a specialized book for Mississippi trees is very worthwhile. Many of us first learned tree identification using the free booklet, Mississippi Trees, by Clair Brown, obtained from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Unfortunately, this book is less useful than that little booklet. The photographs are of extremely poor quality. The shots of the trees are fuzzy, sometimes overexposed, and frequently are so close up they render the silhouette unidentifiable. The specimen shots of leaves are generally made on a black background and the dark green leaves often fade into the picture. Photos of bark aren't much better.
The text accompanying each tree is limited. Again, the free booklet has a better description of the trees. The only advantage this book has over the free booklet is that it contains more species and is printed on glossy paper.
It was a good effort, and would have benefited greatly from better photography.

Out of date and missing info.......2001-07-23
The trip was fantastic and I really enjoyed it, but this book didn't make it out of my bag when I was there. While a lot of the info was good, I used the Lonely Planet guide the whole time as it was more up to date and more accurate than Frommers.
Look at other books.......2001-03-29
I went to Melbourne and Sydney and the book turned out to be pretty skimpy. I flipped through the Fodor's book when I got home and wished I had bought that one instead. I found the Frommer's book to be very light on things to do and good places to eat for the 2 cities I visited. There isn't even a mention of Olympic Park in Sydney and only a handful of restuarants are mentioned. If you are only buying one book I would recommend checking out the Fodor's instead. It is much more thorough and has better maps throughout for each city.

We will be going to Australia this November, and bought this book now in October. Having read a good portion of it (facinated by the "virtual tour" before the real one), I can say this is probably the only book one will need before and during the trip. Complete, straight, fun to read. The other book by same authors (Australia for under $50) is basically the same book without listing the expensive resorts and restraunts. G'Day!

There are 2,966,155 square miles, three time zones, dozens of distinct ecosystems, and 25,000 plant species in Australia, not to mention numerous states, cities, and towns, each with its own ambience and character. Even if you were to spend a full year in Australia, you'd be hard-pressed to see it all. Frommer's 2000 Australia, however, works hard to help set your travel priorities.
The guide begins with 16 pages of color photographs that span the continent, from Sydney's Harbour Bridge to the Great Coral Reef. The "Best of Australia" lists come next, highlighting the best beaches, restaurants, bush walks, and snorkeling, as well as outdoor adventures and small-town getaways. Once you've got an itinerary sketched out, the remaining 700-page guide goes local, detailing the highlights (and lowlights) by region. Intermixed are sections on the Sydney 2000 Olympic games, Australian history and culture, an online directory for Internet research, a pull-out map, and even an Aussie/Yankee lexicon to explain terms like ropeable (very angry) and cobber (good friend). Covering Australia is a tall order, one that Natalie Kruger and Marc Llewellyn (both Sydneysiders) dispatch with admirable skill and flair. --Stephanie Gold

Customer Reviews:
Opinionated Objectivity.......2000-07-07
When I shop for a travel guide I look for something objective-- it must give general interpretations before the author's opinion! frommer's australia 2000 is the perfect combination of the two. it starts off with a "best of" section which details both the major highlights of the continent as well as off the beaten track suggestions for the anti-tourism tourist. it also gives suggested itineraries in case you have a limited time in a particular spot. it also has the best hotel descriptions I've ever read in a travel guide, for all price ranges! I've traveled with many guides, and frommer's has been the most accurate. This is the best out there.

Four Miles to Pinecone.......2003-01-27
Minnesota author John Hassler uses Four Miles to Pinecone as an allegory to itself. He opens by stating summer is over then proceeds to tell a tale of growing up and making decisions of one particular summer. In the end, the book becomes its own forty-seven page assignment (and then some) as described in the early chapters. Hassler weaves an intricate tale using metaphors along the way. Particularly poignant is the main characters inability to use a manual transmission on a car. Hassler writes how he often gets stuck in one gear due to unfamiliarity with a clutch. This is a metaphor for his character's inablity to change gears in his life. He insists on working in a grocery store, and plans to do so forever (so it seems), or how he cannot turn in his friend whose become a burglar.
The is a very well-thought and developed story line. It is an older work by an accomplished author, but is worth reading nonetheless. It is a middle school level book, and should be part of many schools' required reading lists.
This book rocks!.......2001-11-03
this is a very good book it was a little bit easy to read and it could have been longer but it was an awesome book i really liked it! a real page turner!
A good book.......1999-12-23
I think that this book was very good, but as previously suggested, perhaps not for 7th graders. The way the charecters were described really made you relate to them. I like the format and style of Jon Hassler, and hope he continues to write for young adults.
Good,Simple Book.......1999-11-23
Being a teenage boy growing up in Minnesota, I took an extra personal interest in the story. I could relate to the scenes that he was writing about and as I got deeper and deeper into the plot, it felt like I was actually in the story. Hassler's events were short and to the point. He covered a lot of detail in only one hundred fifteen pages. I prefer books that have a straightforward plot and one that has good principles. I feel that 4 Miles to Pinecone is a book that has all of that.
