Book Description

Reworking Success: New Communities at the Millennium is an eloquent call for fundamental social change in the face of the overwhelming challenges facing humankind at the start of the new millennium.

Well-known futurist Robert Theobald argues that we must adopt new goals for the 21st century if humankind is to continue to inhabit the planet. Challenging the current dogma of maximum economic growth, globalization and international competitiveness, Theobald maintains that our whole notion of "success" requires a complete overhaul: that the required criteria of success for the next phase of human social evolution are ecological integrity and a respect for all of nature, effective participatory decision-making, and social cohesion based on profoundly changed concepts of justice. These radically changed goals force us to radically reconstruct our communities. Reworking Success documents the steady slide of "successes" into failures that characterize the latter part of this century, and then describes the new role that citizens are adopting in helping to create new kinds of success today and in the future.

Reworking Success was originally written to be broadcast nationally for a prestigious annual Canadian lecture series. The author adopted an unusually democratic and participatory process in developing the lectures by placing the texts on the Internet for public input and feedback which he then incorporated into the final work.

Robert Theobald is a speaker, consultant and writer who has been on the leading edge of fundamental change issues throughout his forty-year career; he has worked with business and labor, education and health, government and local communities. Widely published, he is the author of over 25 books that deal with change, economics, and related issues, recent titles including Turning the Century (1993) and The Rapids of Change (1987). A British citizen, he has lived in several countries, and now resides in New Orleans.

I was an economics major in college and a practicing republican. Reworking Success challenged my previous learnings and opened my eyes to a world I didn't know existed. Theobald doesn't push his views, he brings you along for a ride that you didn't even know you got on. Recommend highly! Julie in Seattle, Washington

5 out of 5 stars Shake grounds of our society. Help how we see it!.......2000-03-15

... And how to change it as a citizen. A great base for discussion. A good way to form discussion group. Read it, experience it!

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - a must-read.......1999-02-12

This book lays out in coherent and reality-based form where we are and where we could go to create a world for our children that works. It's a brilliant companion-book to Hartmann's "The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight" or Hubbard's "Conscious Evolution." Buy them all and help change the world for the better!

5 out of 5 stars Positive ideas to take us forward........1997-11-12

As modern day culture teeters on the brink of collapse, Theobald offers an analysis of the situation and some positive things that people can do.One of his central ideas is that ordinary people can make a difference, if only they have the will to take action and the belief that they can change things. He advocates new ways of thinking about our problems and the future, and working in a co-operative manner is stressed. He has many ideas that are worth serious consideration if we want to avoid catastrophe.

      Book Description

It has been the setting for a threatening dictatorship, Hollywood spy thrillers, and some of the most earth-shaking political events of the twentieth century. Now, unified Berlin is the fourth-most-visited city in Europe. Once split by communist regimes, hidden behind the enigma of the Iron Curtain, and divided by the Berlin Wall, this global capital is teeming with mysteries, sights, and delights for travelers.

From casual walks among gothic, postmodern, and classical architecture to day trips to the outlying villages, the updated Maverick Guide to Berlin: 3rd Edition leads visitors on a tour of the German capital with instructions on how to find the latest and finest dining, shopping, and hotels in the city. It is also an exciting guide to centuries of history-political, artistic, and religious-and a modern escort to awe-inspiring museums, cathedrals, and stately palaces.

The Maverick Guide to Berlin is the first city guide of the acclaimed Maverick Guide Series. As much for entertainment as information, the new third edition of this now classic guidebook easily proves that this one city has as much to offer as some entire countries.

      Book Description

In "Finding My Voice," nationally acclaimed public radio host Diane Rehm tells the story of her remarkable life - a story in three acts. First, her childhood in a traditional, Christian-Arab household dominated by her psychologically abusive and beautiful mother whose influence on her intelligent young daughter was substantial. Then, in her thirties she found her career, as the host of her own radio talk show, which 20 years later has become one of the most influential voices on radio today. Finally, she delves into her recent, frightening battle with the rare neurological disorder, spasmodic dysphonia (SD) that almost cost her all that she had gained in life.

      Customer Reviews:

      1 out of 5 stars Pathetic.......2006-09-28

I think Diane Rehm is a talented radio host. I appreciate that she has had a long and interesting career, however, being a radio host and being an author are definitely not one and the same. Ms. Rehm's revelations of insecurity, marital discord, marital sex, and the rest, felt just too embarassing. Her perspective is whiny and immature and completely uninspiring. I kept wishing I could have been a wise and dear friend that stopped her from writing this book.I shudder each time I think of her (literary) indiscretion.

1 out of 5 stars Towards Commitment? Some People ought to Be Committed?.......2002-12-24

Even more incredible and galling than her first "literary masterpiece" is volume two of "My Life for Sale." While I am not near retirement age, I can only hope that I can continue to write, challenge and generally annoy media and ruling class types like Diane Rehm who don't know when to quit. Despite the fact that I am in my mid-50s, I play drums in a rock and rock band and hope to have the manual dexterity to continue. Yet, I hope I have the grace and sense to bow out when it becomes medically necessary. Instead of gracefully bowing off the air, Diane Rehm prefers a regimen of shots to the throat at Johns Hopkins.

"Towards Commitment" sounds like someone who has been married for a long time but is still unsure. I remember listening to a segment of Diane's show in which she interviewed an author of a book on infidelity. On the air, she stated that if she ever caught her husband cheating, she would ...If I was married to her (heaven forbid), and she said something like that about me, I would have divorced her immediately.

"Towards Commitment" sounds like someone still struggling with whether or not they want to be manacled together with another person when there are so many nubile 18 years old about the land.

It is difficult to imagine that anyone could stoop so low as to think that their life is of such enormous interest to anyone else that one would pay good money to read about their trials and tribulations. Selling one's life in the pages of a book means that with everything happening in the world, with all of one's life, having lived through momentous events, that the only subject worthy of literary attention is your sorry life and how your struggling "Toward Commitment."

Maybe the authors ought to be committed and this ridiculous effort committed to the bargain basement.

1 out of 5 stars How Low Can You Go?.......2002-12-24

"Finding My Voice" is one of those books whose content is intimately intertwined with the author. I cannot review such a book without commenting on the author. Such a book proves that "celebrity" authors, such as Ms. Rehm, make it that much more difficult for those of us struggling for the attention of publishers and "Rick Reynolds, Super Hollywood Power Agents" and trying to put important words on paper.

I am sorry that Ms. Rehm had a terrible childhood and has seen fit to forsake her Lebanese heritage in favor of entertaining Zionists on her radio program as they justify the slaughter of Palestinian men, women and children for the continuation of the Zionist entity and for the dubious and questionable Biblical justifications allowing such slaughter.

A stroke of luck brought Ms. Rehm's now trembly voice to NPR (National Police Radio) and Washington, D.C.'s WAMU. Ms. Rehm, a high school graduate, took the place of a volunteer for an on-air slot leaving listeners to suffer with her apologetic, non-confrontational, Larry King-type program where she, as former station manager Kim Hodgson remarked engages in "positive, unconditional regard" for guests. This means that when she entertains guests such as war criminal Henry Kissinger and former national security advisor Sandy Berger she allows them to lie on the air unchallenged by her, who refuses to do so, or callers, whom she cuts off the air. I have been the victim of such terminations, despite the fact the WAMU, which is subsidized by American University student tuition and the American taxpayer through NPR, a U.S. government controlled entity. Despite this policy, Ms. Rehm attacked a guest, Gore Vidal, for being homosexual, hardly a fitting policy when your a supposed liberal. When Noam Chomsky appeared on AU's campus, Ms. Rehm, who at first refused, then was forced to allow Mr. Chomsky to appear on her program. She was unable to attack him because of his superior intellect and cogent arguments.

I believe that the American reading public should stop subsidizing the lifestyles of the rich and ridiculous by refusing to buy such claptrap as "Finding My Voice." I believe that writing should say something to the reader. it is a literary and social contract whereby the author agrees to provide something new and original that will educate and entertain. "Finding My Voice" is not a retirement program for the already wealthy living in a two story, red brick colonial home in Bethesda, Maryland and counting members of Washington's ruling and media elite as friends. How about Knopf giving real writers a chance for a change?

3 out of 5 stars Diane's Voice Carries Better Than Her Pen.......2001-11-19

Believe me, I am a devoted fan of Diane Rehm's. She is the most articulate, knowledgable, talented talk show host in the country. Thus I was disappointed by her autobiography. Of course, because her outstanding talent is interviewing, I guess I can't expect her to be a brilliant writer as well.

I thought she harped on her sad childhood too much. Over and over again she blames her mother--and her father less so--for emotionally crippling her entire life. Many of us have had less than happy childhoods, and many of us have suffered some type of abuse, but most of us get over it--or at least don't go around continually blaming our flaws on our parents and/or childhood. I certainly didn't expect Diane Rehm to do so. She seems much too mature and wise for that.

The other disappointment I have is the writing itself, which is not as smooth and polished as it should be. (Where was the editor?) There's also some repetition of passages from one chapter to another, as if the author had forgotten she had said this same thing earlier in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Thank goodness Diane Rehm "found her voice!".......2001-01-08

As a big fan of "The Diane Rehm Show," I guess I'm somewhat biased, but I truly think this is an excellent, honest, heartfelt book. In "Finding My Voice," Diane comes across as the same admirable person we all know from her radio talk show --honest, direct, curious (about ideas and above all about people), down-to-earth, warm, caring, determined (even stubborn) and - despite her lack of a college degree (who cares?!?) - highly intelligent. In my opinion, the really interesting parts of the book deal less with Spasmodic Dysphonia than with: 1) Diane growing up as a girl in a traditional Arab-American family in the 1940s and early 1950s with a depressed, anxious, abusive mother; 2) the obstacles (professional, personal) which Diane -- and many talented young women -- were forced to overcome to achieve something for themselves in the male-dominated society of the 1950s and 1960s; 3) Diane "finding her voice" in a growing radio career, and in a broader sense the overall growth of talk radio - for better ("The Diane Rehm Show" and others where people can have a civilized discussion and actually are encouraged to think for themselves) and for worse (Rush Limbaugh and "Dr. Laura" - blech - where people berate each other, preach to each other, or mindlessly "ditto" the host); and 4) Diane's constant struggles to overcome deepseated feelings of insecurity and of not being worthy, despite (or even fueled by) her growing outward success.

Besides that, there are also some memorable moments with some really bizarre/obnoxious guests - Tony Randall and Tom Clancy stand out in particular - and some really excellent ones - Race Hoss and Jimmy Carter, for instance. And unlike many celebrity autobiographies, in "Finding My Voice" this does not come across -- at least to me -- like mere gratuitous name dropping. Instead, they are an integral part of Diane's story, illustrating some of the best and worst which she has faced in her radio career.

Finally, "Finding my Voice" shows us that -- whatever she may feel about herself (and whether or not she'll ever truly believe it) -- Diane Rehm IS an amazing person who deserves every bit of success and happiness she has achieved in her life. I'm just thankful that Diane finally DID manage to "find her voice," and hope that she doesn't lose it for years and years to come! P.S. Thank goodness for public radio -- and for everyone who supports it!

5 out of 5 stars Encouragement to continue growing and searching.......2006-02-20

Even those women who have found and freed their authentic voice need encouragement. In those sere times, or in those times of gestation, or times when we feel we don't know where the next step is let alone where the path is taking us, these are reminders of who we are. These are reminders to care for ourselves and to shake off those little judges that sit on our shoulders, whispering seditious insidious sentences, telling us to quesion or refrain from using our voices. An important book in any woman's library!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-10-24

Janet Quinn aims directly at the heart and soul of being a woman - actually being a human being. Her willingness to be open and honest with the pain and ecstasy that make up our lives is inspiring. Great book - one I'll read again and again.

      5 out of 5 stars Finding Voice.......2000-08-25

This is Janet Quinn at her best, modeling for women everywhere, of every age, the importance of voice. She tells her story, and in doing so, tells "everywoman's" story, and in finding her voice, she helps all women find voice. I strongly recommend these meditations, both for personal reflection, and as the perfect gift for women. In the first reading, I could not put it down; now, I return for the pause of contemplation.

5 out of 5 stars The Power of the "I AM.".......2000-08-13

Thank you Janet Quinn for reminding us of the power of the "I AM" statement. I was inspired to CLAIM my truth; to claim all my parts; to feel all my feelings. And to do all this without judgement.

I recommend this book to all women transitioning to their true selves --- the self not defined by a role, such as mother, wife, friend.

Because of this book, I AM a more whole person. I honor the work it took to create this safe place for all women to find their voice.

I plan to share this book with all my women friends so that the gifts of Janet Quinn's truth-telling benefits us all.

      5 out of 5 stars Life Altering.......2000-05-23

This book gave me a sense of validation and empowerment that cannot easily be found by women. Janet Quinn captures the struggles that women encounter everyday and the true reverence that women have for themselves and everyone around them. I am purchasing several copies as gifts. Every woman should read this book!

        5 out of 5 stars A Voice To Find.......2004-03-11

        A Voice to Find

Finding My Voice is about Myong- Ok (Ellen) who is the only Korean girl in the school. She goes through racism because she is a Korean girl. Ellen has the usual evil enemy, the cute crush and her best friends that help her through high school. Inside Arkin High Ellen gets Aýs and Býs and has the highest classes with a couple of her friends that she knows.
But at home she is different, more perfect. The only reason that Ellen is perfect is because her father. He puts pressure on her to be the best like her older sister, Michelle. Ellenýs father often says something like, ýWhy canýt you be more like your older sister Michelle?ý Or ýMichelle got straight A+ýs why canýt you get them too?ý
Ellenýs favorite subject is English because she can really express her self in it. But her real passion is Gymnastics. She tries so hard to achieve a star on her jacket which means that she can compete in the regional. Ellen has a hard time trying to do what she likes (Gymnastics) because her father comes in again and says ýIf you get lower than an A, you are going to quit the gymnastics team.ý
Then in the middle of the story her crush, Tomper, starts noticing her and asks her out. Ellen says, ýYesý. Since she agreed to go out with Tomper she has to lie to her parents. Will her parents find out about Tomper?
This book really made me think twice about how people might feel if they are made fun of because of their race or culture. I was never really bored but it kind of went slow in the beginning but it soon got fast paced. Like in the beginning it gave a little too much information so I was a little bored. The vocabulary of this book doesnýt have large words that you may need to look up in the dictionary. But in the end I would give it five stars! Another book that relates to this book is called Promised Land by Isabelle Holland. It too deals with racism but in the olden days like after the Civil War.

4 out of 5 stars Korean American experience.......2003-08-04

Ellen/Myong-Ok lives a double life: the dutiful obediant daughter of a Korean doctor and immigrant who expects her to go to Harvard as a science major like her bright older sister, and the gynmastics athlete and humanties lover who sneaks out to drink with her friends. When a blonde blue eyed football hero starts to fall for her, it becomes something else to hide, along with the racism she experiences from students and teachers alike.
Lee successfully juxtaposes American and Korean values, and presents a heroine who defines an identity she can remain true to.

4 out of 5 stars Finding My Voice.......2003-04-29

This book,¡± Finding My Voice¡± talks about a Korean girl who lives in the United States. Actually, it is a good story and a special experience about Ellen. I think she can¡¯t forget everything during her whole life. In my opinion, most of Asian people have this kind of experience when they lived in the United States. I think for people who are racist, it is really difficult for then to change their thinking about living with people who are not American. I don¡¯t know why some people must have a different attitude towards people who came from different countries. I can understand about Ellen¡¯s feeling when she felt all of the unfair things. It was not her fault. She studied hard just for her parents, she liked Tomper but she couldn¡¯t get everybody¡¯s blessing. She didn¡¯t have any confidence when she felt she was so different from other Americans. She thought Tomper wouldn¡¯t fall in love with her. For me, I think if I were Ellen, I must be strong and I must think I can do everything well. If I can¡¯t change other people¡¯s thinking, I only can do my best to prove myself. I think, I live in the world not only for myself, but also for a good life. I will try to find the best way to make me feel good. So I will care about each decision during my life. I think sometimes parents¡¯ opinions can be accepted, so I will follow my parents¡¯ suggestion to think about something.

I'm an international student from Korea. The book itself was interesting and it made me think a lot about Korean people in America because Ellen, who is a main character of this book is from Korean immigrant familly. Through this book, I could see how she has matured in her thinking and I thought about how the Korean people went through their troubles. At the same time, I found the answer to how I can cope with my living situation in America. It was a precious experience for me to read this book.

                    Description:
This article focuses on my experience of thyrotoxicosis and is rooted in the tradition of medical sociologists reflecting upon their own illnesses. I use the method of autoethnography to contribute to broader academic debates on acute illness as a neglected research area and embed my reflections in feminist work which makes connections between bodies, gender, illness, health and healing. Autoethnography, as an autobiographical research genre, displays multiple layers of consciousness, connecting the personal to cultural. My article aims to reveal how acute illness can be (1) viewed critically from the perspective of menopausal bodies, constructed by biomedics and (2) benefit from theoretical explorations of Foucault's concept, technologies of the self and Braidotti's feminist notions, nomadic flexibility and identifications. Given that I illustrate these aims through the methodology of autoethnography, my article has both theoretical and methodological implications.
